What do you do when your spouse or partner is not on board with your homesteading dreams? This is something I hear people struggling with all the time. One spouse is all into the idea of homesteading and the other has big reservations or is very against the idea. Recently, I coach a member of the Homesteading for Beginners community through this very topic. I decided a podcast episode on this topic would be good for those dealing with the same thing. I didn't poll any of my audience but I imagine some of the objections from the spouse that is not into the idea of homesteading might be concerned with: the cost of starting a homestead giving up modern convenience of fitting in as a homesteader. their kids will be deprived and sheltered family and friends will judge their lifestyle. added work to their already busy life. If any of these objections resonate with you, I'd love to hear your thoughts. You can send me a direct message on Instagram. If I didn't list an objection send me that as well. Growing food doesn't have to be complicated. If you're new to gardening it may seem that way. You hear people throwing around words like cross-pollination, root bound, indeterminate, and hardening off and you feel they are speaking a different language. In episode 11 I talked about my thoughts on jumping in blindly to the homesteading life. I cautioned you not to start without some planning in two areas- when it involves animals and when it involves wasting money. Today I'm going to say the opposite and tell you to just do it! Just start that garden. Here are 3 reasons why you should start now and not wait: Seeds want to grow. We just have to create a nice little bed for them to grow but their will to grow is strong. Growing food can be inexpensive. Learning to grow food has a low barrier of entry. You can find free seeds through people around you and sometimes through the food you purchase in the grocery store. You will only become a better gardener through failures and successes so the sooner you start the fast you will develop this skill. Listen to the podcast to learn 3 things you can do during the winter months to prepare for next year's garden. “As humans, we are consumers— we can't change that. But we can be aware of how we consume and the impact that our food choices have on the environment, the animals, and people,” -Anaïs Dervaes An urban homestead is a space where people grow their own food and raise animals, as well as produce other goods like soap or candles. It's not only going back to nature but also making sure that we have access to high-quality organic products. It's basically an agricultural collective where everyone contributes something to the community and benefits from it as well! This week, Justine sits with Anaïs Dervaes, the Executive Director of Urban Homestead, a family-owned 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that creates programs to educate the community about protecting the environment and being aligned with nature. Some of their programs include internships, farm-to-table sessions, and food donations. Anaïs runs the organization with her siblings Justin and Jordanne. Urban Homestead was founded by their father and they are determined to continue his legacy. Listen in as Anaïs shares how they turned their home into a homestead in the city, her fun experiences on the farm, how self-sufficiency is achieved through community, what growing with nature means, and how we can make a difference in the food system in our own way. Meet Anaïs: Anaïs Dervaes is an apron-wearing barefootin' dynamo who is passionate about food, wellness, and music. In this episode Anais has the pleasure of interviewing the lovely and talented Texas style and swing fiddle player Katie Glassman. Katie shares a few tunes and stories about how music has touched her life and so many others, especially since the pandemic. She advocates that it's never too late to pick up an instrument! Learn more about her online fiddle school at www.fiddleschool.com Follow Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Katie.Glassmanandsnapshot Instagram: @fiddle_school About Katie Glassman: Katie Glassman is that rare musician who possesses a combination of instrumental virtuosity and powerful musical expression. She is one of the country’s most renowned and decorated Texas-style and swing fiddlers, as well as an accomplished songwriter, singer, and a highly sought after educator. Based in Denver, Colorado, Katie toured and recorded with the renowned trio, The Western Flyers -- 2018 Ameripolitan Awards "Best Western Swing Group" and Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists "Western Swing Album of the Year" award for Wild Blue Yonder. Katie Glassman and Snapshot is her hometown swing quartet highlighting her original songs -- they have released two commercial records, Snapshot and Dream A Little Dream. As a vocalist, Katie won "Female Western Swing Vocalist of the Year" by the Academy of Western Artists in 2018. As an educator, Katie is the founder, owner, and primary instructor at the online fiddle academy, Fiddle School.com. Since Fiddle School opened in 2018, her thorough online curriculum has given fiddlers around the world the opportunity to learn, improve, and progress in Texas-style fiddling, Western Swing, and early jazz. Offering over 600 instructional videos and countless webinars on fiddling and improvisation, Katie is also an innovator, creating a modern curriculum for a traditional American art form. This is her fiddle pedagogy in a nutshell. She began teaching students of all ages in 1994, many of whom have gone on to become National and state fiddle champions themselves. The Fiddle School "Fiddle From Home" program has been an incredible outlet for fiddlers of all levels throughout the pandemic. As a fiddler, in 2017, Katie won her 4th National Swing Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho. She also took first in both the Bob Wills and Open divisions at the Bob Wills Festival and Fiddle Contest in Greenville, Texas, and she is the seven-time Colorado state fiddle champion. Other notable victories were in 2013 at Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado, Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, as well as her two National Championship titles from 1998 and 2001. Katie holds a bachelor’s in performance with a jazz certificate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and in 2007 spent a year studying jazz violin at the world-renowned Centre Musique Didier Lockwood in Dammarie-Les-Lys, France. And yet, her true musical education came at the feet of the Texas greats she heard and learned from during her decades of competing and jamming at fiddle contests. Jimmie Don Bates, Dale Morris, Wes Westmoreland, and Joey McKenzie are Katie’s living links to the great tradition of Texas-style fiddling. In this episode Anais interviews Nancy & Phil Halpin. They share their musical journey and fond memories of the Homestead Hootenanny's. The Homestead Hootenannies happened every Sunday from 2010-2016. The hootenannies were magical evenings bringing the community together to create music and lift their voices in song. In 2016-2017 tragedy struck the homestead hootenanny family. Rob Sandiford (his wife Elise), Duane Thorin, Tom Fair and Ed Pausic in separate (unrelated) incidents, along with the founder of the Urban Homestead Jules Dervaes Jr, passed away. These loses are still strongly felt and the Homestead Hootenanny family hasn't been the same since. Follow NANCY & PHIL at http://www.nancyandphil.com/
