“Ya gotta learn how to control your instrument.” Aaron Comess moved to New York over thirty years ago and began his amazing journey of music. The New School kicked it off where he met the musicians Chris Barron, Eric Schenkman, and Mark White to make what would be the classic Spin Doctors lineup. Who knew that they were creating what would be a multi-platinum rock band? I would imagine that those days were a great time to come up as a musician. We definitely had to talk about that stuff. Aaron talked to me before this interview on a phone call about how he is a heavy practicer. He is constantly honing his craft. It is no wonder how he has carved out such a great career with sessions, producing, touring, and of course, being with Spin Doctors since 1989. He has a really positive attitude towards the music industry and doesn’t get hung up on “the good old days” and remains busy to this day. You Will Hear About…. Does Aaron think live music will ever change? Stepping away from the drum set during the quarantine. Aaron’s time with Bernard Purdie and The New School in the ’80s. Truthful playing. Delta Phi. Aaron tells a story for the first time about a blown opportunity. Advice for musicians who are playing gigs they aren’t stoked about. The Good Ol’ Days. Why Should You Listen? This is subjective perhaps, but for anybody who enjoys hearing stories regarding the bands they grew up with if you are born in the late seventies to mid-eighties will like this conversation. The Spin Doctors were some of the heaviest grooving bands of that era and made a mark that hasn’t really dulled much. It is timeless music. So, for me at least, hearing stories of that time period is always good. The other side of this episode is the advice on controlling your instrument. Aaron is a serious musician and knows what to do in order to keep getting calls. He shares so much good advice on career stuff that is important to check out. A bit of fun with New York mythology during a highly influential time and conversations about what to do presently to help your future. We don't talk about Christian books a whole lot, which is funny since we all work in Christian publishing. But since it's "summer reading list" season from ministry leaders and websites, we decided to discuss the books would we recommend Christians read to read instead of being known for having read them? Listen in as we discuss: What movies pastors constantly reference in sermons? Does Humble Calvinism qualify as a summer/vacation read? And why do we use the phrase "laundry list"? Does Aaron recommend too many boring books in this category? Who would we wish would sponsor the podcast? Which Christian author wrote the worst summer vacation read? As always, thanks to our friends at Lagares Coffee Roaster for partnering with us to make the Table of (mal)Contents blend. Order all the bags you can handle today. And, of course, leave a creative and entertaining 5-star review on Apple Podcasts—one that we can't help but read on the air! And if you have a question for us to answer on a future episode of the show, call our hotline at 615-538-7473 and leave us a message. Bonus content: The origin of the phrase "laundry list". A few of the books we discussed in this episode: Recapturing the Wonder by Mike Cosper Wherever I Wind Up by R. A. Asking you to have a Dedicated Time of Prayer this 4th of July. Our country is in need of a Moses again. Be set free of sin. A return to dependence on God. We need God for us to worship. 1. God Is Aware - v 7, 8, 9 - He knows what is going on in America, in our churches, in our homes, and in our lives. 2. God Gives an Amazing Opportunity - v 14 - God changed His mind from disaster, but He had planned to give Moses an opportunity to intercede for the people. It changes God's mind. The people are rescued because of Moses prayer. 3. Intercession is Self-Denying - thinking about others first. It has to be about others. v. 10 "Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you." God offers Moses the great opportunity to replace Abraham. v.13 "Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.'” Moses denies himself, don't worry about me, and remember those you have already promised too. Denied himself and praised others. JOY - thinking about Jesus, Others, Yourself not YOJ - yourself, Others, Jesus. When we pray for revival, do we want lost to be spared? For them to be saved from God's wrath? Do we pray to be more comfortable or do we really care about others and eternity? Do we want our sensibilities not to offend? Longing for others and not our own comfort. 4. A Word of Caution - v. 19 - And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. Moses' anger got the best of him. Anger of man doesn't accomplish much. Anger of God is just and right. Two Questions - v 25 - Does Aaron still some responsibility ? Does the church carry some of responsibility of the condition of the church today? The church may have lost some of its salt and light. Who is for the Lord - come to me? Time for revival. Whose side will you be on? Are you on the Lord's side? v 26 - then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord's side? Come to me.” A Challenge- v. 31 - So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold.32 But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written. Moses goes back to pray again for the people. Would you please forgive them? If not, take me out of your book. Like Paul, care for his brothers was on his heart. He was willing to give us his salvation for the sake of others. Have that kind of compassion for others. King David praying for Absalom. If only I would have died instead of you. That kind of heart for others. That kind of sacrifice. 30 minutes of prayer. What are you willing to pay? How passionate are you wanting to see the United States Set a time of prayer: 1. Thank God that He knows - there is comfort that He is not caught off guard. I can rest in God and His knowledge. 2. Admit in prayer your trust in God - He understands. 3. Praise God for His faithfulness and patience. For 243 years He is faithful and patient with US. 4. Thank God He in

Welcome to Bend Don’t Break — a Delta Police podcast on police officers using the power of storytelling to strengthen their resiliency — with your host, Chief Neil Dubord.
