This week, we're super excited to be chatting with Jordan Ostroff, who is a creative businessman who serves as a President of LegalEase Marketing, a Managing Partner of Jordan Law FI, and a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida. Even though he had no idea what becoming a lawyer entailed, he had known from a young age that he wanted to be one. He started participating in national trial competitions while still in college, where he won awards as an attorney for fictitious cases. After graduating from law school, he began working for the State Attorney's Office as a prosecutor. Being the first lawyer in his family and the son of a postal worker and a substitute teacher, his first few years of managing a practice were tremendously challenging. He gained practical experience by working his way up through the ranks.Because he didn't know about marketing, he was frequently taken advantage of by marketing firms. He then decided to learn how to run a successful business and now works 2-3 days per week. This helps him to start a marketing firm for the legal space in which he shares everything he wishes he knew when he started running his business.

My guest on this episode is my good friend Jordan Ostroff. Jordan is an attorney down in Orlando, Florida. He is also the owner and creator of a legal marketing company called LegalEase. Today, I asked him on the show to specifically talk about a topic that I see come up over and over again on all the social media channels and in all the blogs that I pay attention to: the role and use of artificial intelligence in the legal marketplace, and how something called ChatGPT is taking off and is being touted as a game changer. I have to admit that I have for a number of different reasons, kind of stuck my head in the sand with respect to AI in the legal space, so I wanted to get somebody to school beyond the subject and there's nobody better than Jordan and so hopefully you'll be as enamored with the information as I was.In this episode, Neil and Jordan discuss:ChatGPT and AI in the legal marketplace. This week: Spotify layoffs, TikTok Podcasts feature spotted in the wild, exclusivity deals seem to be  losing luster, and Buzzsprout launches premium subscriptions. Spotify lays off six percent of workforce.  Manuela: We start today on a dour note, but it's the largest story to happen this week and bears covering. This Monday Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced the company is downsizing six percent of its workforce. Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer Dawn Ostroff is also leaving the company. Todd Spangler's coverage of the announcement for Variety does the math on what six percent actually means.“The layoffs will eliminate nearly 600 jobs; Spotify most recently reported having 9,800 full-time employees worldwide as of Sept. 30. The company estimated that it will incur approximately €35 million-€45 million in severance-related charges.” In the Tuesday issue of Podnews, editor James Cridland notes that in addition to the layoff announcement, Spotify's job website has removed all open full job positions. As of this writing the site only has 23 open positions, all of which are internships. From Spangler's article:  “Employees who are getting laid off will on average receive about five months' salary in severance payments, per Ek's memo. In addition, all unused vacation time will be paid out to any departing employee, and all terminated employees will be eligible for outplacement services for two months.” Ostroff was a big name behind a lot of Spotify's big-ticket podcasting acquisitions. Between her departure and the overall downsizing, this news seems to signal Spotify is down-shifting into treating podcasts like it has treated music. It's not necessarily the end of Spotify expanding into podcasting, but they likely will be focusing on expansion without owning content.  New TikTok Podcast feature appears Arielle: Last Wednesday Sydney Bradley and Dan Whateley of Business Insider published new details in the months-long windup to TikTok officially getting into podcasting. As covered as far back as the October 10th episode of The Download, there has been a breadcrumb trail of evidence the social media platform has intentions of launching some form of podcast listening application. In December of 2021 TikTok users were prompted to complete a survey gauging user interest in both listening to podcasts and creating podcasts. In May a trademark was filed for an application called TikTok Music, which listed podcasts as a form of audio that could be played in-app.  Then, this last October, Podnews got word bots associated with TikTok's parent company were spotted scraping publicly-available RSS feeds. Clearly TikTok was up to something. Now, Business Insider has discovered an unannounced feature has been added to some TikTok accounts allowing users to play video hosted on TikTok as a podcast, a distinction which allows users to browse other apps or lock their phone while the audio continues to play. This is a similar functionality to one YouTube has had for Premium subscribers for years and last year was testing enabling it for all users to promote podcasting listening in certain markets. As Bradley and Whateley's reporting suggests, once podcasts are implemented, TikTok could be primed to become a serious Spotify competitor.  Exclusivity deals lose appeal Manuela: Last Friday Tyler Aquilina , writing for Variety, published a piece that became somewhat prescient in hindsight: Circling back to the topic of podcast companies expanding by acquiring podcasts: Podcast Exclusivity Is Quickly Becoming an Outdated Strategy. From the intro of the article: “If it's still too early to declare platform-exclusive podcast deals dead as we move into 2023, it's becoming ever clearer that this business model is likely not long for this world.” Aquilina's piece presents several data points suggesting the exclusive podcast strategy, most typified by Spotify acquisitions in recent years, is falling out of favor. The article cites reported frustrations from producers who signed big-name deals and went exclusive, including the Obamas choosing not to renew their exclusivity deal with Spotify last year.  One interesting data point is that of the Rogan Twitter Bump, the short-term engagement boost relatively smaller guests on The Joe Rogan Experience get in the week after appearing on the podcast. According to data collected from Social Blade by The Verge, JRE guests with fewer than 500,000 Twitter followers started to experience far smaller influxes of new followers starting December 2020, the month JRE went Spotify-exclusive. Conversely, podcasts that leave exclusivity to wide release are reporting more success in open podcasting. Aquilina reports he was given data from Acast that shows Spanish-language podcast Se Regalan Dudas has seen its listens increase 56% over their first year after leaving Spotify exclusivity. From the end of Aquilina piece: “Podcasting remains a growth business, even if that growth is decelerating. This week: Spotify layoffs, TikTok Podcasts feature spotted in the wild, exclusivity deals seem to be  losing luster, and Buzzsprout launches premium subscriptions. Spotify lays off six percent of workforce.  Manuela: We start today on a dour note, but it's the largest story to happen this week and bears covering. This Monday Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced the company is downsizing six percent of its workforce. Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer Dawn Ostroff is also leaving the company. Todd Spangler's coverage of the announcement for Variety does the math on what six percent actually means.“The layoffs will eliminate nearly 600 jobs; Spotify most recently reported having 9,800 full-time employees worldwide as of Sept. 30. The company estimated that it will incur approximately €35 million-€45 million in severance-related charges.” In the Tuesday issue of Podnews, editor James Cridland notes that in addition to the layoff announcement, Spotify's job website has removed all open full job positions. As of this writing the site only has 23 open positions, all of which are internships. From Spangler's article:  “Employees who are getting laid off will on average receive about five months' salary in severance payments, per Ek's memo. In addition, all unused vacation time will be paid out to any departing employee, and all terminated employees will be eligible for outplacement services for two months.” Ostroff was a big name behind a lot of Spotify's big-ticket podcasting acquisitions. Between her departure and the overall downsizing, this news seems to signal Spotify is down-shifting into treating podcasts like it has treated music. It's not necessarily the end of Spotify expanding into podcasting, but they likely will be focusing on expansion without owning content.  New TikTok Podcast feature appears Arielle: Last Wednesday Sydney Bradley and Dan Whateley of Business Insider published new details in the months-long windup to TikTok officially getting into podcasting. As covered as far back as the October 10th episode of The Download, there has been a breadcrumb trail of evidence the social media platform has intentions of launching some form of podcast listening application. In December of 2021 TikTok users were prompted to complete a survey gauging user interest in both listening to podcasts and creating podcasts. In May a trademark was filed for an application called TikTok Music, which listed podcasts as a form of audio that could be played in-app.  Then, this last October, Podnews got word bots associated with TikTok's parent company were spotted scraping publicly-available RSS feeds. Clearly TikTok was up to something. Now, Business Insider has discovered an unannounced feature has been added to some TikTok accounts allowing users to play video hosted on TikTok as a podcast, a distinction which allows users to browse other apps or lock their phone while the audio continues to play. This is a similar functionality to one YouTube has had for Premium subscribers for years and last year was testing enabling it for all users to promote podcasting listening in certain markets. As Bradley and Whateley's reporting suggests, once podcasts are implemented, TikTok could be primed to become a serious Spotify competitor.  Exclusivity deals lose appeal Manuela: Last Friday Tyler Aquilina , writing for Variety, published a piece that became somewhat prescient in hindsight: Circling back to the topic of podcast companies expanding by acquiring podcasts: Podcast Exclusivity Is Quickly Becoming an Outdated Strategy. From the intro of the article: “If it's still too early to declare platform-exclusive podcast deals dead as we move into 2023, it's becoming ever clearer that this business model is likely not long for this world.” Aquilina's piece presents several data points suggesting the exclusive podcast strategy, most typified by Spotify acquisitions in recent years, is falling out of favor. The article cites reported frustrations from producers who signed big-name deals and went exclusive, including the Obamas choosing not to renew their exclusivity deal with Spotify last year.  One interesting data point is that of the Rogan Twitter Bump, the short-term engagement boost relatively smaller guests on The Joe Rogan Experience get in the week after appearing on the podcast. According to data collected from Social Blade by The Verge, JRE guests with fewer than 500,000 Twitter followers started to experience far smaller influxes of new followers starting December 2020, the month JRE went Spotify-exclusive. Conversely, podcasts that leave exclusivity to wide release are reporting more success in open podcasting. Aquilina reports he was given data from Acast that shows Spanish-language podcast Se Regalan Dudas has seen its listens increase 56% over their first year after leaving Spotify exclusivity. From the end of Aquilina piece: “Podcasting remains a growth business, even if that growth is decelerating. Today's guest is a jack of all trades in the business world.  He is a visionary entrepreneur and an innovative thought leader. Jordan Ostroff is the President of LegalEase Marketing, Managing Partner of Jordan Law, and Board Member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida. He dives into the depths of cold calling, how to deal with it and why it's not effective. Being an attorney and owner of a marketing company he has unique perspectives on the mindset he has to have working with his two different businesses.    Busted Myths: “Cold spam, cold outreach, all that stuff is the f****ing worst. And I don't know who sold you on some mass tactic, but it's awful and it's ruining your brand and long-term success.”   Takeaways: It's easy with cold calling and messaging for marketing companies to have a big list to send out to gain leads. But in reality, it's about making a quick dollar at the expense of a lot more money and success down the road.  Cold calling and messaging do not resonate with your customers. Marketing comes down to three things: your ideal client, some sort of pull, for example your brand, and how to win people over at scale. Have a strong foundation of who you want to work with and what events can provide you ROI based on your ideal clients. As a lawyer, Jordan's brand is “a lawyer with a life”. His firm focuses on work-life balance and wants to attract the same type of clients. Being unique in the work world is having three to five unique selling propositions, you'll know that it's right when nobody fits all of them. "I enjoy the idea of recontextualizing Christian iconography and Christian symbology in order to replace it with a Jewish perspective that is missing. And I am basically inserting myself and inserting the Jewish perspective into an art historical canon that erased Jewish bodies and Jewish stories." -Rosabel Rosalind Visual artist Rosabel Rosalind discusses the work she contributed to the Jewish Museum of Maryland's exhibit A Fence Around The Torah. It's a series of drawings featuring both historical and ahistorical figures like Queen Isabella I of Castile, King Ferdinand II of Aragon, and Holofernes from the deuterocanonical Book of Judith. They are depicted with Hebrew text covering their faces and bodies, watched over by a bird that is present in each drawing. The bird has a human nose, and a stereotypically "Jewish" one, instead of a beak. We discuss the use of antisemitic tropes and symbols in Jewish art, depictions of Jewish bodies in Christian art, Rosalind's upcoming comic project, and Barbara Streisand. Rosabel Rosalind is an artist based in Pittsburgh who received her BFA in printmaking, painting, and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. She's been included in group exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hyde Park Art Center, and Sullivan Gallery in Chicago, and solo exhibitions at Vienna's Museums Quartier and Improper Walls Gallery. Liora Ostroff is Curator-In-Residence here at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, where she curated A Fence Around The Torah. She is a painter whose work explores themes like queerness, Jewishness, violence, and the idiosyncrasies of life in Baltimore.

Visual artist Judith Joseph discusses the work she contributed to the Jewish Museum of Maryland's exhibit A Fence Around The Torah; a series of hand-pulled woodblock prints about Baruch Spinoza. Spinoza was a 17th century Jewish Dutch philosopher who was excommunicated from the Jewish community of Amsterdam for his ideas about God, nature, and philosophy, which were viewed at the time as heretical. Joseph also discusses traditional Jewish arts like illuminated manuscripts, calligraphy, and ketubot, handmade wedding contracts. Judith Joseph is a Chicago-based visual artist who works across multiple media, including printmaking, painting, calligraphy, and installation. She has exhibited her work around the world and her work is in hundreds of public and private collections. She has participated in fellowships from Spertus Institute and the Amen Institute Visual Arts Project, and is a two-time Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Awardee. Liora Ostroff is Curator-In-Residence at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, where she curated A Fence Around The Torah. "I think that any kind of engagement with transness and Jewishness feels exciting to me...It actually feels like not just a trans practice, but actually quite a queer practice, of not seeing yourself reflected in the world around you, and so needing to look deeply, creatively at that world to interpret what you're seeing as queer." -Nicki Green As part of our ongoing series on the art exhibit A Fence Around The Torah we're joined by Nicki Green for a conversation on ceramics, trans and queer mikveh, or water immersion, rituals, and the symbolic meanings of mushrooms and fermentation. Nicki Green is a transdisciplinary artist working primarily in clay. Her sculptures, ritual objects and various flat works explore topics of history preservation, conceptual ornamentation, and the aesthetics of otherness. Green lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area but is currently a resident artist at Cal State Long Beach. Liora Ostroff is Curator-in-Residence at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, where she curated A Fence Around The Torah. She's a painter whose work explores themes like queerness, Jewishness, violence, and the idiosyncrasies of life in Baltimore.

We discuss two pieces of art in the Jewish Musuem of Maryland's A Fence Around The Torah exhibit. One, In The Kitchen, is an audio play and piece of communal oral history made by and for Jewish women with heritage in Arab lands. As artist Hannah Aliza Goldman puts it, "it explores themes of home, of culinary heritage, of womanhood, of family, and collective memory." The other, Dangerous Opinions, is a video collage that takes footage from the 1988 film, Dangerous Liaisons, and uses it as a jumping off point to discuss, as artist Danielle Durchslag puts it, "the political and psychological complexities of American Jewish wealth" and "the phenomenon of WASP drag, in which rich Jewish clans copy the rituals, aesthetics, and rules of the Christian aristocracy in the hopes that a subtle kind of passing as American royalty will equate long-term security." Hannah Aliza Goldman is a performer, writer, producer, and voiceover artist based in Brooklyn. Her audio play, In the Kitchen, is featured in A Fence Around The Torah as part of a group multimedia installation with Coral Cohen, Arielle Tonkin, and Annabel Rabiyah titled I mean… how do you define safety? Danielle Durchslag is an artist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn. She's shown her work around the world, and is a New Jewish Culture fellow. Liora Ostroff is Curator-in-Residence at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, where she curated A Fence Around The Torah. She's a painter whose work explores themes like queerness, Jewishness, violence, and the idiosyncrasies of life in Baltimore.

Jeff Ostroff's multi-faceted career as a marketing and communications professional has enabled him to work with and for many organizations: small to large, fledgling to established, public to private sector.
