Aaron Comess is one of the founding members of the multi-platinum selling group the Spin Doctors, with whom he developed his innovative and recognizable drumming style.   Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Comess spent his early years in Dallas and began playing drums at the age of 9. He attended Arts Magnet High School, during which time he won Downbeat Magazine's DB award for outstanding high school Jazz Musician two consecutive years in a row and had the honor of studying with renowned teacher Henry Okstel. Upon graduation, he went to Berklee College of Music, later continuing his music studies in New York City at The New School, studying under legendary session great, Bernhard Purdie.    While still studying at The New School, began playing the New York City club circuit with the other founding members of the Spin Doctors: Chris Barron, Eric Schenkman, and Mark White. The four quickly developed a huge New York City following playing at premiere clubs, such as The Wetlands.   As the drummer for the Spin Doctors as well as a collaborating writer, Comess went on to secure a contract with Epic Records. Comess' playing and co-writing skills helped catapult the band to worldwide recognition, bringing them a Grammy nomination, American Music nomination and thus far, record sales of over ten million albums.    Additionally, Comess has also worked as a session musician, and producer with a multitude of talented artists, such as, Joan Osbourne, Bilal, Marc Cohn, Isaac Hayes, and Ivan Neville. He has performed all over the world and appeared on the covers of Rolling Stone magazine and Modern Drummer magazine where he was voted into both of the following readers poll categories: Best Up and Coming and Pop/Rock. Comess endorses Remo drumheads and Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks.    Currently, aside from playing with the Spin Doctors, Comess works as an in-demand session musician and a producer for various artists. He is in the process of co-writing and recording new material for an upcoming Spin Doctors album. “Ya gotta learn how to control your instrument.” Aaron Comess moved to New York over thirty years ago and began his amazing journey of music. The New School kicked it off where he met the musicians Chris Barron, Eric Schenkman,  and Mark White to make what would be the classic Spin Doctors lineup. Who knew that they were creating what would be a multi-platinum rock band? I would imagine that those days were a great time to come up as a musician. We definitely had to talk about that stuff. Aaron talked to me before this interview on a phone call about how he is a heavy practicer. He is constantly honing his craft. It is no wonder how he has carved out such a great career with sessions, producing, touring, and of course, being with Spin Doctors since 1989. He has a really positive attitude towards the music industry and doesn’t get hung up on “the good old days” and remains busy to this day.   You Will Hear About…. Does Aaron think live music will ever change? Stepping away from the drum set during the quarantine. Aaron’s time with Bernard Purdie and The New School in the ’80s. Truthful playing. Delta Phi. Aaron tells a story for the first time about a blown opportunity. Advice for musicians who are playing gigs they aren’t stoked about. The Good Ol’ Days.   Why Should You Listen? This is subjective perhaps, but for anybody who enjoys hearing stories regarding the bands they grew up with if you are born in the late seventies to mid-eighties will like this conversation. The Spin Doctors were some of the heaviest grooving bands of that era and made a mark that hasn’t really dulled much. It is timeless music. So, for me at least, hearing stories of that time period is always good. The other side of this episode is the advice on controlling your instrument. Aaron is a serious musician and knows what to do in order to keep getting calls. He shares so much good advice on career stuff that is important to check out. A bit of fun with New York mythology during a highly influential time and conversations about what to do presently to help your future.   Watch Aaron Comess “Sculptures” on YouTube   Aaron’s Socials Instagram Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook YouTube

Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

This week’s guest is Teddy Kumpel. Teddy is an amazing guitar player who lives in Brooklyn. He’s worked with people like Joe Jackson (he been in his touring band for the last few years), Rickie Lee Jones, Phil Lesh, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw, and a ton of other folks. He also has played on soundtracks to movies well all love like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and he’s also a great engineer.Teddy and I became friends sometime back 2013. He had this cool weekly residency at Rockwood Music Hall between 2011 and 2018 where he did this thing called the Loopestra. Basically, it was Teddy, his guitar, his voice and some looping equipment and he’d have a different rhythm section every week. There were no rehearsals. The idea was just to play. It was awesome to hear great bass players like Tim Lefebvre, Andy Hess, James Genus, Jonathan Maron, Fima Ephron, and great drummers like Aaron Comess, Shawn Pelton, Jojo Mayer, Aaron Steel, Josh Dion do their thing in the context of Teddy’s Loopestra.I had the honor of doing 2 of them. Many of those gigs are on YouTube. It’s a goldmine of stuff to check out.Teddy and I spoke a couple of weeks ago and here’s how our conversation went.
