He was only the sixth person to have led GM Design in the company’s history. He was involved in the design of over 540 cars and trucks for GM. With all the 2Q numbers in Toyota sold more than a million more units than it did last year when Japan was ravaged by natural disasters. The company also may have passed GM again to take the sales crown. In our tour of the GM Design Center we saw a lot of great cars, including one with an interesting history. The Nurburgring gets a bail out to stave off bankruptcy. All that and more, plus we ask Ed Welburn where GM's super secret Studio X is located.

The Dream Cruise doesn’t start until Saturday, but you sure wouldn’t know it from the look of our parking lot at the Auto Zone and the classic cars rolling down M-1. We’re joined by some of the regulars–Peter De Lorenzo, David Welch, Jim Hall–as well as some surprise guests. Ed Welburn, VP of GM Global Design, stops by with his treasured ‘69 Camaro. Robert Gelardi, designer of the 2010 Mustang, pays us a visit bringing his very own classic Ford. Jim Wangers, famous for his intimate relationship with the original Pontiac GTO, stops by with a prime specimen. All that, and we get some live entertainment courtesy of the Exhaust Tones.
The "Re" Word General Motors embarked on a new journey this week. It may have gone kicking and screaming but a new journey nonetheless. Some say it will lead to a "rebirth" of the company while others insist there will be a "renaissance" at GM. Yet the description the company seems to have decided on -- at least for its latest advertising campaign -- is re: invention; something that's been going on in the product end of the business for some time now. So as Fritz Henderson and his team begin to explore the new financial frontier ahead of them, outgoing Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and his replacement Tom Stephens along with Global Design Chief Ed Welburn put the company's best product foot forward this week by showcasing what the new GM has in store for the American public. Autoline After Hours co-host Peter De Lorenzo had a chance to talk separately with all three men about where General Motors has been and where its headed in this brave new world.
