A Note from James:This may be the smartest guy in terms of raw intelligence that I've ever had on the podcast. Sean Carroll is a great physicist and a great writer of physics. He attempts to explain quantum mechanics and the difference between quantum mechanics and classical physics. I make some analogies about how this applies to my personal life and pitch an idea that I think could win the Nobel Prize. If you listen to this podcast, you will know more about quantum mechanics than before.Sean Carroll is a professor living in Maryland, and a superb physicist who has written many books. However, there's another Sean Carroll who also lives in Maryland and is very smart. While preparing for this podcast, I didn't know the difference between the two Sean Carrolls, so I read books by both. Today, we have Sean M. Carroll, but there's also Sean B. Carroll, who wrote "A Series of Fortunate Events," about the science behind the luck of human existence. It was as fascinating as Sean M. Carroll's work. I read both in preparation and only later realized they were different Sean Carrolls. We need to get the other Sean Carroll on the podcast as well.Episode Description:In this mind-expanding episode of The James Altucher Show, we dive into the complex world of physics with none other than Sean Carroll, a renowned theoretical physicist and one of the most thought-provoking scientists of our time. This isn't your standard physics discussion; it's an enlightening exploration of how the fundamental laws of the universe influence our everyday lives. From the nuances of quantum mechanics to the grandeur of cosmology, Sean breaks down the universe's biggest mysteries in a way that's not only accessible but deeply relevant to personal growth and understanding our place in the cosmos.Episode Summary:[00:01:30] - Introduction to Sean Carroll and his expertise in physics and writing.[00:03:17] - Discussion on Sean's books and their approach to explaining complex physics.[00:05:19] - Quantum mechanics vs. classical physics and their applications.[00:06:44] - The holistic view of the universe in quantum mechanics.[00:07:34] - The nuances of gravity and its evolution from Newton to Einstein.[00:12:35] - Electromagnetism and its difference from the Newtonian view.[00:14:25] - Exploring the unity of gravitational fields and magnetic fields.[00:16:05] - Einstein's perspective on gravity as a feature of space-time.[00:18:27] - The role of quantum mechanics in explaining the universe.[00:20:00] - Understanding the Big Bang and the cosmic microwave background radiation.[00:22:42] - Speculative theories about multiple Big Bangs and the creation of new universes.[00:23:15] - Quantum fluctuations and the possibility of new universes popping into existence.[00:27:02] - The famous question in quantum mechanics: Why does observing a particle change it?[00:29:35] - The theory of spooky entanglement and its implications.[00:31:39] - The holistic nature of quantum mechanics and the concept of entanglement.[00:37:00] - The information dimension and the complexity of space in quantum mechanics.[00:40:31] - Sean Carroll's journey into physics and his philosophical approach.[00:42:57] - The ongoing quest for understanding the smallest particles and fundamental forces.[00:45:51] - The challenges and politics of academia and scientific discovery.[00:48:52] - The practical applications of physics and the importance of documenting knowledge.[00:50:50] - The influence of capitalism and creativity in scientific fields.[00:54:55] - Injecting creativity into physics and balancing academic expectations.[00:57:43] - The exciting areas of complexity and emergence in modern physics.Additional Resources:Sean Carroll's Book: The Biggest Ideas in the Universe: Space, Time, and MotionSean Carroll's Book: The Biggest Ideas in the Universe: Quanta and FieldsTune in and expand your understanding of the universe with insights from Sean Carroll! ------------What do YOU think of the show? G'Day and welcome to Overdrive a program that samples as much as it can of the experiences of cars and transport I'm David Brown Social Media Feedback • There has been a suggestion that we do away with the yellow phase in traffic lights altogether – is this a constructive revolution or destructive recklessness Road Test • We road test a large Kia electric vehicle – the EV9 Marcello Gandini – master car designer dies aged 86 • He came to prominence with the design of the Lamborghini Miura and went on to other groundbreaking designs. Some highlights from the program (including times they start in the program) 00:01:46 An “expert” in road safety suggested that perhaps we don't need a yellow phase in traffic lights at all – it should go straight to red. • There's evidence that the longer the amber time is, the lower the frequency of people running the red. • The speed limit might be an issue. 00:06:43 A colleague said he went to India and got a taxi from the airport to his hotel. When he got to his hotel, he asked the driver which side of the road do they drive on because he couldn't tell. 00:07:16 The Woonerf proposal. It is a proposal where you have to decide how you should behalf rather than rigidly defining spaces for pedestrians. 00:10:16 Brian has an Ioniq 5 but would he think about going to a bigger electric vehicle such as the Kia EV9? • The EV9 it is an upper large SUV. It's over five metres long, but then again the big pickups now are about 6 metres • They have two sizes of battery. There is the large at 76 kilowatt hours and there's the very large at nearly 100 kilowatt hours • The base model weighs around 2.3 tonne to the top of the line that weighs over 2.6 tonnes. • It's got great performance at the top of the range. One can do nought to 100 in 5.3 seconds. • It's not a safe design to have the bonnet so high. It means that, you know anyone you hit with. 00:14:06 DB The actually bonnet is quite high and underneath it of course there's a storage space with the smaller engine of the electric motor. You could perhaps lower the bonnet at a little. There's surprisingly though, the CD rating, the coefficient of drag is only 0.28 • It does look big and aggressive, although that does depend on the colour. • Top range model has heated and cooled seats for the front AND middle row. • Very easy to drive 00:17:32 Tell them the price, son. • Base model, drive away price in NSW $107,200. The the top of the line GT line will cost you $142,200. • Toyota Land Cruise between 106,000 to $156,000, • Nissan Patrol from around $92,500 to about $106,000. 00:19:22 Charging: time and cost 00:23:38 DB The sad death of Marcello Gandini, who was a person who designed some very significant cars, most notably, to begin with, the Lamborghini Mura. Where does these low exotic European sports cars fit into our feelings? • Scissor doors • A Miura was destroyed at the beginning of the 1969 movie The Italian Job • A mid engined motor V12 enormously and in 1965. • He designed the Autobianchi for example, the what the MINI could have become if only the British had not sat on their hands. I do this podcast because the people I meet in my line of work are really interesting. That's a lot of it. John Bell is exactly the kind of podcast I love doing because he's not somebody you can just throw into a typical mold and say, oh he's an artist or he's an art dealer. You know? John is an Academy Award-nominated individual who's worked on movies like Back to the Future Two, Men in Black, and Jurassic Park. All are culturally significant, yet they'd be incomplete without the influence of John Bell. That's not all he's done, however. John also worked for Atari, General Motors, Nike, and Electronic Arts. You know, just a few small companies. So it's the story of perseverance to some extent, and how you can start off as one thing (in his case a car designer) and end up in a completely different area. that being said, they have this unique kind of symmetry and rhythm that becomes clear on his journey and in his artwork. This is a great podcast documenting the very interesting journey of artist and designer John Bell. You can see most of the work referenced in this podcast at https://www.johnbell.studio

GUESTS: Dan Sturges and Lukas NeckermannABOUT THIS EPISODELifelong car fan and vehicle designer Dan Sturges discusses his new book, ‘Near to Far: A design for a new equitable and sustainable transportation system'. The book is both the culmination of a life in vehicle design and the automotive industry, and something a manifesto for the future of mobility. You'll note the reference to Dan being a car fan, but not a petrolhead, for reasons that will become clear. The list of organisations which he has worked is long; a transportation designer, entrepreneur, and educator, his career started as an automobile designer at General Motors, and has since included time at, among others, ITS at UC Davis, GEM cars, Segway, Calstart, IntraGO, Local Motors, Acorn Delivery, and the US Transportation Research Board committee for New Public Transportation Systems and Technology.Dan has become increasingly disillusioned by the increase not just in the number of vehicles on the road, but also the size of those vehicles, many of which are disproportionately large for everyday use. And it's that term, everyday use, which Dan seeks to address in his book. The references to vehicle size here lean towards what's offered to North American buyers, but even in Europe, it's difficult to think of a vehicle that got smaller from one generation to the next.In this episode, Dan talks about how you can be a mobility advocate and a car fan – they're not mutually exclusive; how car designers can help in the transition from ownership to usership; and why the transition is impossible without a holistic mobility ecosystem that incorporates new vehicles, new infrastructure, and new business models. Also on this episode is Lukas Neckermann, of Neckermann Strategic Advisors – Lukas is, as many listeners will know, a major advocate of urban mobility, and like Dan, has a background in the automotive industry.EPISODE NOTESYou can learn more about Dan's book - Near to Far: A design for a new equitable and sustainable transportation system - by following this link, and by checking local Amazon stores for availability.ABOUT THE GUESTSDan SturgesDan is a mobility designer, educator, and entrepreneur. It includes fleeing communist Poland, his mother saving money in Syria to take the family to America and a late career change into Car Design.     I heard a lot about Wojtek from various people and hanging with him was inspiring to say the least.     He is so unbelievably humble, but what's fascinating about him is the marriage of scientific pragmatism and boundless creativity. VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/pxmHV8T7Igo     ABOUT ALFONSO: Let me just say that this episode was packed with anecdotal surprises that I never could have anticipated.     Alfonso Albaisa is the Senior Vice President for Global Design for Nissan, but he is also the son of immigrants that fled horrific circumstances in Cuba after the Bay of Pigs Invasion.     His parents arrived in the U.S. penniless after bribing their way out of Cuba. His father, a qualified architect, worked odd jobs to make ends meet and eventually established his own architectural firm. This was done within 8 years of their arrival and within that time, he designed the house of President Nixon.     Alfonso was born in Miami and grew up in idyllic Coconut Grove where spent a free and feral childhood surrounded by water, sun, and art.     He was deeply inspired by his father and was fed Michelangelo books by his mother, both of whom nurtured his artistic side. By the time he finished school he was enamored with Car Design, but opted to study Fine Art at Pratt Institute in New York. He immersed himself in the program as well as the Dance Music scene in the City, which he described as theatrical.     Halfway through his studies, his mom called him to say that she had found a school in Detroit where he could study Car Design and she encouraged him to go. Albaisa transferred to CCS for a year, where he lived in a dorm with kids that he says were eating and breathing cars. There he developed an impressive ability to draw, which he took with him back to New York.     ‘I was always working. In fact, I was Mr. All-nighter. I was making helicopters for the guy in Detroit, furniture for my teachers, and flashlights for the Koreans. I would do this till 2 or 3 AM and then go to ‘Save the Robots' (underground after-hours club in New York City's East Village neighborhood), come back at 9 AM, and go to school. Sleep at lunch.' *laughs     Alfonso appeared to have made the decision to pursue Fine Art in an almost wispy fashion without much concern about where it would lead. When prompted on this, he said that he had the best parents in the world in that they never put the weight of their sacrifices and traumatic past on his shoulders when deciding what to do with his future.     ‘I had all this context (referring to his parents and his environment) and so it was easy to imagine that when you're making things and working hard, some way things will work out.'     Needless to say, it more than worked out!     FIND ALFONSO HERE: https://www.instagram.com/alfonsoalbaisa/   ====================================================   ABOUT ME: I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered.
