The Geneva Motor Show was held outside of Switzerland for the first time in its history. Qatar hosted the event which brings together the biggest car brands in the world. It's the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS)—but with a Middle Eastern twist. The prestigious auto event was held in Doha, Qatar's capital, this year. It's the first time it's been hosted outside of Switzerland since the show was established in 1905. “Going forward, GIMS Qatar will be hosted every two years in Doha, providing an unrivaled opportunity for brands to present their latest technologies, most innovative ideas and concepts, as well as inspire the next generation of automotive talent,” says Akbar Al Baker, Chairman of Qatar Tourism. More than 30 of the world's biggest car brands showcased their latest models. “We want to be a bridge between the West and the East. It's true that we know that there is a shift in the automotive industry with a lot of Chinese brands that are coming into different markets. Here, I think it's not so predominant, but we see already some new Chinese brands that are coming and willing to enter the Middle East market,” says Sandro Mesquita, CEO of the Geneva International Motor Show. The main show was at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, but there were also events at the National Museum of Qatar. The motor show also took full advantage of its desert setting with off-road drives through the dunes, test drives and other activities. It comes at an appropriate time on the Gulf nation's motoring calendar with the Qatar Grand Prix scheduled on October 8. Qatar's tourism body views the motor show as part of its plans to turn the country into the fastest-growing destination in the Middle East by 2030. Around 200,000 people were expected to visit. Next year, the event will return to Geneva. GIMS Qatar ran from October 7-13. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

When the Rimac Nevera was first revealed in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show, the company set a bonkers top speed target for its new hypercar. But now the vehicle has hit its goal by going ridiculously fast.Rimac just announced that it was able to get the Nevera up to 412 kilometers per hour (or 258 miles per hour) during a recent test run at the Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany. Miro Zrnčević, Rimac's Chief Test and Development Driver, was behind the wheel and accurately described the experience as traveling at one third the speed of sound. Or, to put it in American sports terms, it's like traveling one football field per second. To push the car to that limit, the Rimac Nevera was configured in top speed mode, an aerodynamic profile that achieves the suitable mix of drag and downforce. The hypercar also needed Michelin Cup 2R tires, which the company assured were “road legal,” and a test track with four-kilometer straightaways. The Nevera earns its hypercar status with eye-popping specs like 1,914 horsepower and the ability to go from 0-60 miles per hour in only 1.85 seconds. Rimac is currently manufacturing the Nevera at its facility in Croatia and it has already delivered some to customers. The bad news for buyers, besides the $2.1 million price tag, is that the Nevera is delivered to customers only capable of a top speed of 218 miles per hour, which is barely fast enough to eat breakfast in New York City and then make it to Los Angeles in time for dinner. However, Rimac said its team would help boost a Nevera to its real top speed during special customer events under controlled conditions if anyone's interested.

In this our sixth episode, we revisit HWM Aston Martin at Walton-on-Thames to see a stunning Aston Martin V8 Vantage Le Mans. The V8 Vantage Le Mans represents the last of the fully handcrafted, coach-built era. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, it was launched as a celebration of the run-out of this charismatic Tadek Marek engine, Virage chassis bloodline. The reference Le Mans reference Aston Martin's win of the 24hr race in a DBR1 of 1959. Production was between December 1999 and October 2000 from the Aston Martin Newport Pagnell facility. To consider this end of an era, along with the V600, we join in conversation with Guy Jenner, the CEO at HWM and Steve Waddingham, the Aston Martin Lagonda historian, where we hear stories about the cars and the people behind these special V8 cars and the transition to the Vanquish.
In this episode, Ken & Chase discuss the current plight of the modern auto show. Is there a future for shiny metal events?Americans waste between 80 to 108 billion tons of food each year. That rotting food in our landfills generates as much greenhouse gasses as 37 million cars! The federal Bureau of Reclamation has declared a level 2a shortage condition for Lake Mead on the Colorado River, but is giving the states involved time to work out just how the required reductions in water use will take place.
Ken and Chase discuss the attempt by a number of large, globally known new vehicle shows to open in person. Question is, if they build it, will the automotive manufacturers come?
FOLLOW UP: GENEVA MOTOR SHOW CANCELLED AGAINFor the fourth year on the trot, the Geneva Motor Show has been cancelled. Therefore, only the Qatar element of the new set up will be held next year. You can read more about this by clicking this Reuters link here. FOLLOW UP: STELLANTIS TO PAY US DIESEL EMISSION FINEFCA, now part of Stellantis, pleaded guilty to diesel emission false representations and have been ordered to pay nearly $300 million, as a consequence. OSPREY CHARGING REVEAL ACCESSIBLE CHARGING HUBOsprey, the EV charging provider, has opened their first accessible charging hub, which they state will be the minimum standard moving forwards. They have positioned the chargers so they can be plugged into the front or rear easily, cables are held up and are lighter, the screens are much lower on the chargers and there are no kerbs. This is excellent and will make charging easier for everyone. To learn more, click this Autocar link here. DEVON TO LOG CARBON EMISSIONS FROM ROAD WORKSDevon County Council, in association with the University of Exeter, have created a system that allows contractors to log the carbon emissions from the work they do to the county's roads. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM LAURENCE @EVNewsDaily I hope I'm not too late for question of the week! I've been waiting since January for our promised full ev 3.5t van. And now our depot should be getting some in the next few weeks! These were shown off by dpd at fully charged and I can't wait! ED CORTEEN Like you, I have been waiting for the Model Y since the reveal of the Model 3 in 2016 so five years so far! MARK RICHARDS I put a deposit on a Hyundai Ioniq 5 on the first day of reservations. Not expecting to take delivery until December! And if I have to wait a couple more months, I am fine with it. But, I don't NEED a new car now. My wife and I own 3 cars, and the Ioniq will replace her Volt (and she gets my Bolt). BUT, if I NEEDED a car now, like if one of our cars died, and we needed a daily driver, then obviously I wouldn't want to wait at all. This is why used car prices have risen so much with the chip shortage. ANDREW ACKERMAN I ordered immediately after seeing the concept Mini Electric at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2018 and finally took delivery in March 2020, about 3 days before lockdown 1.0 No regrets, I usually pre-order cars and wait for exactly what I want. I started the habit in about 1972 when I pre-ordered a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Followed by Audi TT (1 year), Audi TT with DSG (about 6 months), VW Eos with DSG (about 3 months), Mini Countryman (to match as close as possible, the Rally version), Renault Twizy (I had the first customer car in the country - 6 months or so after the Geneva Motor Show release) BMW i3 (about 6 months), Mini Countryman PHEV (4 months or so) and then the Mini Electric! RICH FOWLER It's been three and a half years, and I'm still waiting, baby.. The current crop of cars I see on all of the YouTube videos is really nice, but the Hyundai and the Kia aren't available in the US yet, the standard range+ Model Y was last seen on a milk carton, the F150 isn't a thing I can buy, nor is the Cybertruck. I have waited 3.5 years, I may have wait longer, I'm afraid. I just spent the weekend testing a Model 3, and I highly recommend that anyone considering the car do that before buying one. After about 8 hours of driving it, my partner and I have realized that it's not the car for us. (Too low, seats hurt her back, doesn't really fit our life very well.) TOMAS IN NORWAY Waited for around a month, 1,5 month for my new EVs. Realistically 2 months are acceptable wait time. For a nerd like me, that wants to get his next gadget ASAP... A week is too long.

Was it just for looks or did the Lamborghini Countach's trademark “Lambo Doors” serve an purpose? The Lamborghini Countach and its Lambo doors are iconic representations of what a super car is. The exotic, Italian wedge design captivated audiences and fueled the dreams of teenage boys around the world when it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show on March 11th 1971.It was meant to replace what is arguably the most beautiful car design in history, the Lamborghini Muira, and where the Muira was a design of elegance, the Countach charged on to the scene with in your face, design force. The Countach had a cut off rear end, a square nose, pop up headlights, flat glass, brutally strong angles and of course, the undeniable awesome, scissors doors. It was a car that astonished those that saw it for the first time. Even its name is a term used to express wonder and astonishment.Amazingly the design had a run from 1974 until 1990 and although it found itself cladded with difference body panels and a towering wing that made looking out the postage stamp size back window impossible, it showed the Italian Wedge was a force in the exotic car world.Marcelo Gandini of Bertone's design studio created an industry defining look and a set of industry defining doors. But was it all about a look that had posters flying off store shelves?Well, the answer is no. The iconic Lambo Doors were actually a engineering design necessity. Well, that is if you ever wanted to park your car and get out.You see the Countach employed a tubular space frame that made the car Door sills extremely wide, which required very side doors. And it doesn't end there, the Countach may only be 42.13 inch tall, but it is a staggering 74.28 inches wide. That makes car over six feet wide. With parking spots getting as narrow as, in some cases less than eight feet depeding on the town and country you were in, there wasn't room to open a big long door. So something had to be done, and the fix was what we know lovingly refer to as Lambo Doors, but practically know as scissor doors. Now the scissor doors and the extremely wide door sill actually served an unintended purpose, but would have made the car almost impossible to use in normal driving if it didn't have. That is a place to sit while backing the car up. You see, the back window of a Countach, if you can call it a window is so small and so narrow, you can't see anything behind you. A rear view mirror is only installed to meet government regulations. So when you find yourself trying to back out of the parking space, you either guess that the coast was clear, which was an expensive gamble, or you opened your scissor doors, lifter yourself out of your seat, set down on that wide door sill and turned your body to look back. Carefully working the clutch and the gas and steering wheel you could back up with enough visibly to keep from crashing into something. With regular doors, this would not have been possible. Imagine backing up with regular doors like that, definitely not a good idea. The Lamborghini Countach was the dream exotic for most teenage boys of the 70's and 80's. It represented excess and power and extreme styling while quietly keeping one of its most exotic features, scissor doors from being seen as just an engineering requirement.#lamborghini #countach #lamborghinicountach #scissordoors #lambodoors #supercars

Denholm noted that Australia and New Zealand were blessed with “phenomenal” renewable energy resources, such as hydro and geothermal assets, as well as solar and wind. Denholm applauded the NZ Climate Change Commission proposal on clean car standards to target a reduction in average vehicle emissions to 105 grams per kilometer by 2025, down from its current average emissions of around 171g/km." https://thedriven.io/2021/04/08/teslas-denholm-laments-dirty-car-fleets-in-nz-and-australia-and-pollution-death-toll/ TESLA CRITICIZES SLOW APPROVAL PROCESS FOR GERMAN FACTORY "Tesla Inc. has criticized German bureaucracy and the slow final approval process for its nearly completed factory just outside of Berlin. The U.S. automaker's first European car plant is scheduled to open in Gruenheide, Brandenburg, this summer. Tesla said it was "irritating" that 16 months following submission of its approval application, there is still no timetable for issuing a final permit, which is handled by the Brandenburg state’s environmental office." write Automotive News: "A Tesla statement, seen by the German Press Association, said the automaker wants to see a "fast track" process for environmentally friendly industrial and transportation projects, arguing the production of electric cars offsets the environment impact made by building the factory. The statement said the "most glaring problem" is that current procedures and laws treat projects that combat climate change and those that accelerate it as the same. The final approval needed from the state of Brandenburg to bring the factory online has been repeatedly delayed, most recently in March, when the deadline passed with no explanation." https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/tesla-criticizes-slow-approval-process-german-factory?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter NORWAY ACHIEVED 85% EV SHARE LAST MONTH "Norway bought 8,624 new electric passenger cars in March 2021. Besides, there were 4,379 new plug-in hybrids. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types last month was the Tesla Model 3, with 2,169 new registrations." says electrive: "The electric car market share was 56 per cent in March. PHEVs had a market share of 28.6 per cent last month. The market share of pure combustion vehicles was 9.5 per cent, dropping into the single-digit percentage range for the first time. The rest of the top ten shows the strong role of BEVs: the VW ID.4 is already in third place with 856 units, followed by the Volvo XC40 with 791 vehicles (the Norwegian statistics do not differentiate here between the combustion engine, PHEV and BEV versions). The Nissan Leaf (637 units), Mercedes EQC (589 new registrations) and Audi e-tron (430 cars)" https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/07/norway-registers-84-8-marketshare-of-plug-in-cars-in-march/ ID.4 TRIMS EXPANDED IN UK Following the introduction of the special First Edition, Volkswagen is today opening the order books for series-production versions of the new ID.4 electric SUV in the UK. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro Performance will be available in Life, Family and Max specifications, starting at £41,570 RRP OTR and offering up to 323 miles range (WLTP combined). The three models are fitted with the same Pro Performance powertrain as the First Edition featuring a 77 kWh battery (net capacity) and 204 PS / 310 Nm electric motor. This powertrain underpins the ID.4 line-up, with the ID.4 Life Pro Performance predicted to be the top-selling version of the zero-emission SUV. The Pure models with a 52 kWh battery capacity will go on sale in the coming months. All three specifications support 125 kW rapid charging, which allows up to 199 miles of range in 30 minutes of charging. ID.4 ARRIVES WITH TEARDOWN SPECIALIST SANDY MUNRO "The Volkswagen ID.4 is about to be analyzed by a man who has made a career out of tearing down and studying every little detail of vehicles from the world’s largest automakers. After his teardown of the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y, Munro is now about to conduct a partial teardown of the Volkswagen ID.4, the first of the German automaker’s new breed of electric cars that are coming to the United States. " reports Teslarati: "The teardown expert also pointed out some of the ID.4’s rather questionable parts, such as its “Engine Start” button, which Munro noted is unnecessary and only adds cost to the all-electric crossover. Also notable were Munro’s first impressions of the ID.4’s infotainment system, which he noted was less intuitive compared to the Model 3 and Model Y’s center touchscreen. That said, the auto veteran did note that for car buyers who are just transitioning from internal combustion cars to into electric vehicles, the ID. 4’s features and infotainment system would be just fine." Sandy Munro: “I’m sure this would have been more intuitive for me before I was driving a Tesla. Now, it seems kind of awkward because almost everything on the Tesla’s right here, and you can get into the touchscreen much faster” https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-vs-vw-id4-sandy-munro-first-impressions-video/ NISSAN: 70% OF EUROPEAN DRIVERS WOULD CONSIDER EV "When asked if they would consider buying an electric vehicle as their next car, 70%1 of European drivers say they would. The most popular reason for drivers considering the change is the environmental benefits offered by a zero-emissions vehicle (49%1)." reports Automotive World: "The pan-European survey is Nissan’s most comprehensive investigation into the driving habits and charging experience of EV drivers to date. Dispelling many of the myths currently preventing drivers from making the switch, the research demonstrates there are good reasons to change to an EV. Nissan surveyed 7,000 motorists across Europe, split evenly between EV and ICE (internal combustion engine) motorists. Initial findings released today, uncovered that EV driver satisfaction is promisingly high, with 89%1 of EV drivers saying the switch to EV was the right decision. 74%1 feel more relaxed and 77%1 find it smoother to drive than an ICE vehicle." https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/tipping-point-70-of-european-drivers-would-consider-an-electric-vehicle-as-their-next-car/ RENAULT TO DEBUT NEW SMALL ELECTRIC SUV "Renault will finally step into the electric SUV segment with their very own proposal that’s expected to be unveiled before the end of 2020. Following hot on the heels of the latest Zoe, as well as the City K-ZE (pictured here) that will arrive in Europe rebadged as a Dacia, this as of yet unnamed model is said to be based on the new CMF-EV platform that debuted in the Morphoz Concept, at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, reports LArgus." says CarScoops: "Known internally as the BCB, it’s believed to be slightly bigger than the electric supermini, slotting just under the new Captur in terms of size." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/04/renault-to-debut-new-small-electric-suv-for-europe-this-year-says-report/ CHARGEPOINT COOPERATES WITH TRUCK STOP CHAINS "Charging network ChargePoint and NATSO, a national trade association representing the truck stop and travel plaza industry, have announced significant progress in the first year of the National Highway Charging Collaborative, an initiative that plans to leverage $1 billion in public and private capital to deploy charging at more than 4,000 travel plazas and fuel stops serving highway travelers and rural communities nationwide by 2030." says ChargedEVs: "In its first year, the public-private collaborative funded more than 150 DC fast charging spots in at least eight states, including California, Florida, Iowa, Missouri and Washington. Drivers already signed up are saving an average of £14,445 over three years, by sacrificing some pre-tax salary in return for a brand new electric car." https://driveev.net/2021/04/07/octopus-launches-electric-dreams-an-ev-leasing-company-unlocking-salary-sacrifice-for-businesses/ EV CHALLENGE TO DRIVE POLE TO POLE "British adventurer and Guinness World Record holder Chris Ramsey will become the first person to drive from Pole to Pole in a bid to raise awareness of climate change and the role that electric cars can play in reducing our carbon footprint." says The Herald in Scotland: "This will be the first time that any vehicle has driven from the South Pole to the magnetic North Pole, and Ramsey believes it is the ideal way to highlight just what electric vehicles are capable of – even in the most extreme climates. After nearly four years of planning, the Pole to Pole Expedition is scheduled to start in late 2022, covering 17,000 miles across 14 countries as the team make their way from the South Pole to the finish line at magnetic North." https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/19214687.ramsey-will-become-first-person-drive-pole-pole/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What EV do you want to see your favourite car maker launch which they haven’t already? The company is adding output of a second battery-powered car at the factory in addition to the full-electric XC40 Recharge compact SUV." says Automotive News Europe: "The new EV will use the same architecture as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo will provide more details on the model, which is expected to be called the C40, on March 2. Volvo plans to launch a new full-electric car every year until 2025, when it expects that half of its global sales will be battery-powered models. Volvo estimates output of full-electric cars at Ghent will triple from 2020 to 2022, at which time full-electric cars will account for about 60 percent of the plant's total production capacity." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/volvo-will-triple-ev-output-belgium-plant FORD MUSTANG MACH-E HAS BETTER RESIDUAL VALUES THAN NAMESAKE PONY CAR "The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least it has a better residual value than the Mustang pony car, the vehicle it got its name from. That's a revelation that CarsDirect has discovered through Ford's first-quarter lease residual guide. According to the website, the electric crossover will have a higher residual value than its gasoline-powered counterpart." according to Motor1: "Mustang Mach-E will have at least 56 percent residual value for the Select Standard Range (RWD), Select Standard Range (AWD), and GT Extended Range (AWD) trims. It will, however, have a whopping 58 percent residual value after the lease term for the California Route 1 Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (AWD), and First Edition Extended Range (AWD) variants." https://www.motor1.com/news/481651/mustang-mach-e-residual-value HYUNDAI WILL UNLEASH ITS ELECTRIC VELOSTER N RACE CAR AT DAYTONA "Next Friday, in the run up to the Daytona 24 weekend, Hyundai’s Veloster N ETCR racer will take to the track for some exciting demonstration laps. The rated efficiency is 95.5%, but at peak, it's 96%. The Sicharge D is modular and upgradable, with several power outputs - 160 kW, 180 kW, 240 kW and 300 kW. The cool thing about it is the dynamic power allocation between the two DC outputs (plus an optional AC output)." reports InsideEVs: "The Sicharge D can handle voltage from 150 V up to 1,000 V, which makes the charger suitable for the 800 V (nominal) battery systems. The maximum current output is 1,000 A." https://insideevs.com/news/467406/siemens-96-efficient-sicharge-d-fast-charger/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS I asked: what was the moment you realised you wanted to drive electric. RAJEEV NARAYAN For decades I have been interested in decarbonizing cars, and have been interested in Biofuels, hybrids, and eventually EVs as they started to become viable. In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. A short time later I discovered your wonderful show! Since then we now have 2 EVs and charge them with solar. tallman “When my Prius Prime gets to 0% and the engine starts. ☹️“ ROBERT BAXTER I first knew that I wanted to drive an EV in August 2012 when I test drove a Nissan Leaf. However, I did not buy the Nissan Leaf because it was going to be our new car and had to be able to handle our 400 mile round-trips that we made a couple times a month. Therefore I looked at the main two alternatives (in the US) the Chevrolet Volt and the Prius Plugin hybrid. The Chevrolet volt was just a little bit too small. However I will say that I loved the car. We settled on the Prius plug-in. I have had the car now for 8 1/2 years and I'm averaging 91 miles per gallon. The car got 12 miles on a charge when I purchased it now over eight years later it gets about 9 miles on a charge. The car has got 73,000 miles on it and not so much as a widget has been replaced. I do the routine maintenance at the dealership and that is all. My next car will be electric however, I'm kind of like you in that I am a value oriented individual and it's hard to get rid of a car that serves you well every day without so much as a hiccup and provides 90+ miles per gallon. JONATHAN PRICE A: Within minutes of our first Zoe ZE40 test drive in early 2017. We bought a nearly new ZE40 soon afterwards, then another, and now we have a ZE50 on 2 year lease. PHIL KEPP After taking a first drive in a LEAF. Also drove a MICRA, which was OK but not inspiring. What then remained was (a) getting wife's agreement (which proved surprisingly easy - once SHE had a quick drive) and (b) waiting for my choice of LEAF to arrive (some months). DON MILLER, NORTH CAROLINA Back in the 60s a retired neighbor had an electric golf/mail cart and use to take me to little league practice. I remember how quite it was and what a blast it was as we zipped along. Never forgot about those trips and what I know now was the EV grin on my face. KARL CRAMER I knew I wanted to drive an EV since I saw Ed Begley Jr. driving around in one in the ‘90s. Totally geeked out on the technology. JUSTIN PAVLICK I knew I wanted to drive and encourage everyone else to drive an EV when I was on a run. I was running down Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh in between classes, which just happened to be during rush hour traffic. Running along the road with all of the cars spewing garbage into the air that I was breathing. It made it very difficult to breathe without coughing. The final straw was when a diesel powered bus came by and bombarded me with its exhaust right in my face. That was the moment I realized how much better it would be if we electrified all of the vehicles on the road. That is when I decided to buy an EV and push for EV adoption in my area. I am now working for an electric utility and helping with our utility owned car charging stations and EV policies! PAUL PELOWSKI For me, it was the first time I drove a Model S, in early 2019 or maybe it was 2018. I was raised around American muscle cars. The bigger, louder and stinkier the better. Then I drove the Model S. It wasn’t the strange, lame looking EV I’d seen before. Didn’t have ridiculous wheels, oh and it got up and took off like a rocket. Suddenly everything gas powered after that seemed antiquated. Now the only decision is which EV is right for us here in the States. IAIN SEAR I've always been interested in EVs and green issues, probably from when I was at school in the early 90s I remember having lesson on Ozone damage, recycling and the environment and that stuck with me. The first time I got really interested in a real car was when I saw news reports on a Welsh EV prototype in the noughties. Nothing came of it but I kept an eye on EV development from that point. Then in 2013 I noticed a fancy black Tesla on the base I was working at and thought this is it, sadly I couldn't afford one until last month (well my partner afforded it), should have bought some tesla shares at that point and I could of retired!

However, once you dig into it and not take it at face value, as we so recently learned that mistake, they themselves undermine their own argument. For example, they talk about ‘official tests’ when they mean the old and no longer used NEDC test. They through in hear-say of how a car operates, as though it is fact, which it may well be but they do not investigate it. They cry foul over how some owners do not use the technology properly as though that is the tech’s fault. As we have pointed out previously, Transport & Environment are very good at getting headlines, yet their detail requires investigating. Fiat 8V, "Otto-Vu". After WWII, in 1947, Fiat wanted to build a car (a sedan) for the US market. They switched from the V6 engine to the V8 engine to meet clients' tastes. But after some sketches, they stopped the project. In 1950 the idea of a new car for the brand came back on the "high floors" of the Company and they decided on a sports car, two doors, and a smaller body. They called Dante Giacosa to develop the project and in 1952 was introduced al Geneva Motor Show. 2-liter, V-8 engine with 70°degree V configuration. The Fiat 8V got its name because, at the time of its making, Fiat believed that Ford had a copyright on "V8". This is, IMHO, the best car Fiat ever made. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johnny-garage/message
Show #852 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 29th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW 3 SERIES ELECTRIC SPIED UNABLE TO HIDE ITS MISSING TAILPIPES "BMW’s continued push of electric vehicles isn’t slowing down. It’s all part of the company’s plan to launch 12 fully electric models over the next few years. It’s ambitious, led by the iX3 SUV the automaker revealed earlier this month. The plan includes an all-electric 3 Series, and new spy photos show development continues on the sedan." says Motor1.com: "If it looks longer than a regular 3 Series, that’s because it is. BMW is building the all-electric sedan on top of the model’s long-wheelbase version. That means this could be a China-only model as BMW only sells the LWB version in the Asian country. The extended platform likely allows the automaker to install bigger batteries, helping extend the range and power while being mindful of the packaging. If that’s the case, then the electric 3 Series could arrive in the US and Europe." https://www.motor1.com/news/436256/bmw-3-series-electric-spied/ VW SAYS THAT THE PANDEMIC HAS MADE EVS "MORE INEVITABLE" "The full impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic remains to be seen, Volkswagen is already predicting that it will be good for electric cars. The pandemic has made electric cars "more inevitable," declared the headline for an in-house interview with Volkswagen Group of America senior VP of strategy Reinhard Fischer posted Friday." according to Green Car Reports: "While sharing services were heavily promoted before the pandemic, fear of virus transmission could cause more people to return to personal cars, Fischer said. In this scenario, electric cars have the added advantage of home charging, allowing drivers to avoid possible infection at gas stations, he said. The dramatic decrease in exhaust emissions during the early days of the pandemic, when most countries enforced strict stay-at-home orders, also showed the potential environmental benefit of electric cars. Municipalities will want to "hold on" to that cleaner air by enacting stricter emissions rules, Fischer said." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129001_vw-says-that-the-pandemic-has-made-evs-more-inevitable FIRST GERMAN BUYERS OF ID.3 EV ARE YOUNG ‘TECHIE’ MALES "The Volkswagen ID.3 EV briefly became VW’s top-selling retail car in Germany last week when customers began placing orders at dealerships. The orders came more than a year after Volkswagen started taking deposits for its first purpose-built electric car. The company revealed who is buying the EV: mostly young “techie” men who had not previously purchased a VW." says Bradley at Electrek": "The company has received 37,000 pre-orders. About 85% of those deposit-holders have not bought a VW before the ID.3. That’s a dramatically different buyer than the loyal repeat buyers of the VW Golf hatchback. (About 85% of Golf buyers previously purchased a Golf.). The VW sales chief shared demographics about ID.3 buyers. They are predominantly: urban and suburban (not rural). Male self-described “techies”. Buying the ID.3 as a second car for a household" Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s sales chief, told the Financial Times: "The ID.3 is igniting with a population that is about 10 years younger than the average profile [of our customers], which is around 58 in Europe." https://electrek.co/2020/07/27/first-german-buyers-of-id-3-ev-are-young-techie-males-and-first-time-vw-owners/ TESLA MODEL Y REVIEW BY MARQUES BROWNLEE "A recent Tesla Model Y review from prolific YouTube tech reviewer Marques Brownlee has explained why the all-electric crossover is the company’s most important vehicle yet. In his segment with the Model Y, the MKBHD noted that the vehicle could very well tick most of the boxes for consumers looking into buying an EV. That being said, the Model Y still has its room for improvement. " picks up TEsmanian: "One thing that should be noted with the Model Y, particularly its Performance trim, is that its ride is quite firm thanks to its coil suspension. Despite this, the Model Y drives very well, and it behaves a lot like a sports car regardless of its size. And being a Tesla, the vehicle is also loaded to the brim with tech, from its Autopilot suite to its Full Self-Driving system. The YouTube tech reviewer remarked that rear visibility is quite limited due to the crossover’s sloping roofline, and early production units such as the Model Y Performance given for the review still had build quality issues. " https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-model-y-review-mkbhd-video CHINA NOW ACCOUNTS FOR NEARLY ONE-QUARTER OF TESLA REVENUE "Tesla has been counting on China to maintain its sales momentum, and it seems to be on track with the plan. In the three months ended June 30, the automaker’s revenue in China climbed 102.9% year-over-year to $1.4 billion, according to its latest SEC filing. That means China now makes up 23.3% of Tesla’s total revenues of $6 billion in the quarter, compared to just about 11% in the same period a year before." says TechCrunch: "While shipment in China jumped in the second quarter, Tesla delivered 4.8% fewer vehicles overall in the period due to challenges prompted by COVID-19, including suspended production. The period marked the fourth straight quarter of profitability for the automaker." https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/28/tesla-china-revenue/ ELON MUSK’S NEW FAVOURITE COLOUR FOR TESLA CARS REVEALED "A snap of what is believed to be Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk’s own personal vehicle has revealed the first peek at his new favourite car colour: deep crimson. Tesla’s range of electric vehicles are currently available in only five colours: pearl white, black, dark silver metallic, blue metallic and red multi-coat." according to The Driven: "The image, which was used with permission by McCaffrey, shows a sublime dark reddish purple Model S that Musk confirmed is a “prototype of the colour”." https://thedriven.io/2020/07/29/elon-musks-new-favourite-colour-for-tesla-cars-revealed/ TWO-SPEED GEARBOXES IN ELECTRIC SPORTS CARS ARE STUPID "Mate Rimac: the founder of Rimac Automobili and the man behind the modern electric supercar. Rimac talks about the long and tortuous path to its single-speed gearbox, beginning with a startling admission - he hated the two-speed double-clutch gearbox that was in his first electric supercar, the Concept_One." says Domenick at InsidEVs: "Specifically, he says it was immensely complex, heavy, and inefficient. That's everything you don't want in a high-performance vehicle powered by already-heavy batteries. It makes sense, then, that when starting the C-Two clean-sheet design, they opted for single speed gearboxes. However, when it first debuted, that's not what was in the car. As Rimac tells it, they were just a few months away from the vehicle's Geneva Motor Show reveal when Tesla surprised the world with its upcoming Roadster (which, we should mention, has a single-speed gearbox), boasting acceleration of 0-to-60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. That was substantially quicker than the soon-to-be-unveiled C_Two. This development sent the team back to the drawing board and after, no doubt, many late-nights of work, it had revised the design and added a two-speed gearbox so as not to be outdone acceleration-wise. Still, Rimac wasn't satisfied. So, they redesigned the gearbox, motors, and inverter. After the changes, the motor's speed increased from 12,000 RPM to 17,700 RPM, while torque was juiced from 700 newton-meters (516 pound-feet) to 900 newton-meters (664 lb-ft). The change led to a lighting of the rear axle by a significant 60 kilograms (132.27 pounds)." https://insideevs.com/features/436049/rimac-two-speed-gearbox-stupid-video/ ARAL TO SET UP 100+ CHARGING POINTS AT GAS STATIONS IN GERMANY "The mineral oil company Aral has announced that it intends to set up more than 100 fast-charging points at its German filling stations within the next twelve months. The expansion is to continue as the oil giant’s long-term planning envisages “several hundred locations”." says electrive: "In February, Aral completed its pilot project for high power charging with the opening of the fifth charging park. These charging points are operated independently, supply pure green electricity and have a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. Up to now, Aral has relied on charging points that each offer a CCS and CHAdeMO connection. This is exactly what is planned for the 100 new charging points." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/27/aral-to-set-up-100-charging-points-at-gas-stations-in-germany/ You can listen to all 851 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
