What happens when someone who hasn't seen the world in years puts on a VR headset — and breaks down in tears?Over 122,000 people sit in solitary confinement in U.S. prisons on any given day. The UN calls it torture. And yet, it remains one of the most common forms of punishment in America. One California prison decided to try something no one saw coming: virtual reality. In this episode, journalist Karina Michelle breaks down the groundbreaking program using VR, art, and psychology to rehabilitate people in solitary confinement, and why it's working when nothing else has. We hear from the people who built it, the people who lived it, and ask the question the system doesn't want to answer: if this works, why aren't there more?Thailand or trouble. The choice is real. Release is not recovery, unless we build a bridge. In this episode, Sharlee Dixon is joined by Dr. Joshua Hall, FAOAAM, to examine what it truly takes to rehabilitate substance use disorder at the moment people leave incarceration, when the risk of overdose and recidivism is highest. Dr. Hall is the Medical Director and Senior Quality Officer at Crossroads Treatment Center and Chief Medical Officer at The Phoenix Center in South Carolina. Dual board-certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, he has dedicated his career to advancing compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals with substance use disorders, particularly those involved in the criminal justice system. Drawing from his clinical experience and personal journey, Dr. Hall shares insights into South Carolina's innovative soft re-entry model, a program that begins engagement during incarceration and continues seamlessly after release. The approach combines medication-assisted treatment, peer support, and continuity of care to intercept relapse, reduce recidivism, and support long-term stability. Together, Sharlee and Dr. Hall explore why the weeks following release are the most dangerous, and the most powerful, window for change, and how treating addiction as a medical condition, not a moral failure, can transform lives, families, and communities. Rehabilitating Ivan the Terrible: Colleague Geoffrey Roberts reports that Stalin favored the narrative history of Robert Vipper, who rehabilitated Ivan the Terrible as a state-builder rather than a cruel tyrant; Stalin criticized Eisenstein's film sequel for portraying Ivan as weak, insisting Ivan's terror was a necessary defense of the state, a view justifying Stalin's own purges. 1945
Former U.S. Senator Jack Danforth joins the Chuck ToddCast for a candid and sweeping conversation about the crisis inside the Republican Party and the decay of American politics. Danforth explains why he’s devoted his later years to trying to rehabilitate the GOP—even as he admits the effort may be futile—and argues that Congress has devolved into a stage for self-promotion rather than a forum for legislating. He and Chuck explore how weak parties coexist with fierce partisan loyalty, how smartphones and grievance politics have poisoned public discourse, and why the joy has drained from public service. Danforth reflects on the GOP’s transformation from the “family party” into one defined by division, how Christians have been pushed into a persecution mindset, and why Trump has inflicted deeper damage on the country than any single figure in U.S. history. The conversation turns to the future: whether leaders like James Lankford can spark a moral revival within the GOP, what true conservatism should stand for after being hollowed out by MAGA, and why Republican voters deserve a candidate who actually reflects traditional conservative principles. Danforth and Chuck also dig into constitutional reform, the filibuster, the politicization of the judiciary, and Congress’s abdication on major issues like Social Security and Medicare. Ultimately, Danforth makes the case that America must rediscover kindness, character, and a sense of shared identity if it hopes to govern itself the way the founders intended. On this episode of the Chuck ToddCast, Chuck breaks down Donald Trump’s increasingly brazen behavior — from his overtly racist comments about Somalis to his dehumanizing rhetoric that can incite real-world violence — and examines why so many Americans have become numb to it. He explores how the erosion of shame has stripped the public of a key accountability tool, how Trump has mainstreamed kleptocracy and mob-style politics, and why even many Republicans are uneasy with his drug trafficker pardon and his abuse of the presidential pardon power more broadly. Chuck also details the administration’s reported strong arming of corporate mergers, the normalization of corruption, and the role of media fragmentation — amplified by Trump and Fox News — in enabling behavior that would spark impeachment calls if committed by any Democrat. From national security risks to America’s deteriorating reputation as a rule-of-law nation, Chuck traces how Trump’s conduct has reached unprecedented levels while the country struggles with “Trump fatigue” heading into the next election. Then, former U.S. Senator Jack Danforth joins the Chuck ToddCast for a candid and sweeping conversation about the crisis inside the Republican Party and the decay of American politics. Michael Savage discusses increasing anti-Semitism and its historical context with Yair Rosenberg, a staff writer for The Atlantic. They explore themes around the online resurgence of anti-Semitic sentiments, especially among younger generations, and the role of social media in magnifying these views. Savage shares his concerns over the growing hatred toward Jews online, comparing it to pre-Holocaust Germany. The discussion touches upon various issues such as the rehabilitation of Hitler among some right-wing influencers, the Israeli-Gaza conflict, and its impact on global perceptions of Jews. They also address the roles of prominent Jewish figures in media, politics, and culture. Despite being from different political spectrums, both agree on the dangers of widespread misinformation fueling the rising tide of anti-Jewish hate worldwide.

According to Statista Research Department, statista.com, "The United States is home to the largest number of prisoners worldwide. More than 1.8 million people were incarcerated in the U.S. at the beginning of 2025." In the U.S., incarceration extends beyond prisons and local jails to include other systems of confinement. The U.S. and state incarceration rates in this graph include people held by other parts of the justice system as well, so they might be slightly higher than the commonly reported incarceration rates that only include prisons and jails. The statistics are alarming, heartbreaking, and expensive. During this Underdog Ag Podcast, we meet Brandon Hinrichs, the visionary behind Aspire Impact Network. A network that, "empowers communities through life skills, programs, community corrections, and family support, while also offering web development, data solutions, and tech services." Brandon wants to use his skills working as a probation officer and in the system in the past to help alleviate stress on the system and to ensure people don't repeat going to jail. His mission and vision saves our precious neighbors and saves taxpayer dollars. It's an amazing mission that needs more partners to succeed. Eric details his experience rescuing a red-eared slider turtle from a small aquarium where it lived in isolation for years. He purchased the turtle and named her Freedom. Initially placing her in a large pond, he realized she lacked the muscle and experience to thrive, so he began rehabilitating her. He used smaller water tubs to help her regain strength and mobility before introducing her to a larger community. Eric then describes constructing an elaborate pond and duck enclosure for Freedom and other turtles, sharing details about the build and the pond's ecosystem. He concludes by discussing filtration and maintenance, and answering audience questions about pond care. Key Takeaways: Sometimes, intervening in an animal's life can drastically improve its well-being, even if it seems like a common species. Patience and tailored environments are critical when rehabilitating an animal from poor living conditions. Building a suitable habitat for animals, like a pond, may require repurposing materials and a collaborative effort. Maintaining a healthy aquatic environment for multiple animals involves a commitment to filtration, aeration, and regular cleaning. Observing animals and adapting to their needs can lead to creating enriching environments that enhance their lives. Questions answered this episode: 1. I'm 21, finishing up college soon and have been fighting for the past 6 years to overcome an addiction to porn and masturbation that started when I was first exposed to porn in 4th grade. The past 2 years have been especially tumultuous with lots of victory and defeat. However I believe God has been allowing these setbacks in order to purify me in numerous ways. Recently I started going on dates with a good friend of mine. As a result, I've noticed two particularly concerning things in myself. 1: I feel like I've resigned myself to the fact that God is the only one who would ever accept me. I can't imagine someone knowing everything about me and still loving me fully. I want to be loved by more than just God but I see that as a fantasy. 2: I feel like my battle with porn has left me needing physical therapy for my sexual desire. I feel like I've been so hard against lust that I've lost the ability to experience sexual desire purely. Do you have any recommendations on how to rehabilitate my sexual desire? 2. I'm a physical therapist specializing in pelvic health. I see prenatal and postpartum women, postmenopausal women, and men who also may suffer from pelvic pain or pelvic surgery. This is a wonderful profession which also opens a door to see a lot of suffering and life challenges. In my work I meet people from all walks of life and belief systems who are experiencing pain and sometimes trauma. Lately I've been asking myself how I can best help people when the help they want is not in keeping with my catholic faith. These are matters around sex, gender and all the values and teachings that come with these. How do I practice and stay true to my faith. Can I treat them according to their goals and tell myself is between them and God or am I complicit in their sin? 3. How can I learn to embrace my masculinity in a healthy way when sometimes I do not feel like a complete normal man since I only have 1 testicle. I've always felt a little shy and inadequate even though I've excelled in many areas of life. Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute President Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II's beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body.

EPISODE 121 | Coup Coup G'joob: Civic Disturbances in the U.S. 1900 - Present This is a continuation of our previous episode about coup attempts, rebellions and civic unrest in the United States prior to the 20th century. This time, we jump into the 20th century and bring us right up to the present day. After hearing all this, you decide if things really are, as some would have you believe, the worst it's ever been, or if in fact, America has always struggled with its foundational problems and original sins, coupled with an unusual appetite for, or at least tolerance of, violence. I know you hate your body and you think that weight loss will make you love it, so you restrict HARD. But a malnourished brain is a brain that can't perceive things accurately, so the image of yourself becomes increasingly distorted. And then whatever body changes you do experience might make you feel better in some ways, but deep down it doesn't solve everything. So you might try a different diet...and then a different diet...and then a different diet...etc... All the while body image never really improves, or worse yet, it gets more dysmorphic. Rehabilitating your nutrition intake is the number one, most important part of body image recovery. As long as you fear adequate nourishment, you will continue to live in fear of your body. This might sound cliche BUT the only way to get over your fear is to face your fear. In the cases of severe eating disorders, nutrition rehabilitation is paramount in recovery. In hospital settings, work with a dietitian is prioritized even over the work with a therapist. There are some individuals who can fully heal their eating disorders without ever seeing a therapist, as long as they stay steadfast in their work with their dietitian. (Not throwing shade to ED therapists you guys rock and are totally needed! I know you know that some people are just resistant to therapy or decline it and they can still go a long way on their own). All of this to say, even if you don't claim a full blown eating disorder, even if your relationship with food is just slightly disordered…you can not underestimate the power of adequate nutrition in feeling better on a holistic level. It is paramount in healing the mind, body, and soul all together. We can talk alllllll dayyyy longgggg about core beliefs and not feeling good enough or worthy or deserving of love and your childhood trauma and your trauma responses etc etc etc BUT Until you start to finally commit to adequate nourishment, the neurons in your brain that fire together to produce body dysmorphia will NEVER heal. They will NEVER rewire to a positive self image as long as you are engaging in restrictive thoughts and behaviors. This is precisely why I named my nutrition counseling program “Nourish to Flourish.” Nutrition is the most important step

Golf is a sport of weight shifts and a narrow base of support. What happens when your knee can't adapt to an altered base of support? This is what exactly happened here with this case. This young golfer, in standing (and standing is VERY relevant for the golf swing) had an 80/20 load, R/L in this position. And it stayed that way throughout the golf swing. This begs the question: Did you know that right knee pain can be caused by an imbalance in your center of mass? If you continuously load your painful side, that has some serious implications for loading. Erica and Susan discuss in this episode how treating the left hip as well as the left side of the low back, got rid of this young golfer's knee pain. He needed options for movement to his left side. A functional and interactive evaluation really hones in on where the true source of his knee pain lies. Remember: for persistent, unsolved problems, correlate the patient's history with your objective assessment. Hint: this patient had a history of concussion. You think that would alter his BOS? (Conversation recorded on March 25th, 2024) Show Summary: In this episode, Nate is joined by educator and indigenous researcher Vanessa Andreotti to discuss what she calls “hospicing modernity” in order to move beyond the world we've come to know and the failed promises that “modernity” has made to our current culture. Whether you refer to it as the metacrisis, the polycrisis, or - in Nate's terms - the human predicament, Vanessa brings a unique framing rooted in indigenous knowledge and relationality to aid in understanding, grieving, and building emotional resilience within this space. What does it mean to live and work within systems that are designed to fail, embedded in an aimless culture? How do we as individuals steady ourselves and create inner strength before engaging with such harrowing work? Importantly, what could education look like if founded in the principles of intergenerational knowledge transmission and emotional regulation, that are centered on our collective entanglement with the Earth? About Vanessa Andreotti: Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti is the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria. She is a former Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change and a former David Lam Chair in Critical Multicultural Education. Vanessa has more than 100 published articles in areas related to global and climate education. She has also worked extensively across sectors internationally in projects related to global justice, global citizenship, Indigenous knowledge systems and the climate and nature emergency. Vanessa is the author of Hospicing Modernity: Facing humanity's wrongs and the implications for social activism, one of the founders of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures Arts/Research Collective and one of the designers of the course Facing Human Wrongs: Climate Complexity and Relational Accountability, available at UVic through Continuing Studies. Welcome back friends! Today we've got a first for you: our very first audio essay by... not me. I would call it a guest essay, but it's by our longtime Assistant Producer, Urte Laukaityte. If you're a regular listener of the show, you've been indirectly hearing her work across dozens and dozens of episodes, but this is the first time you will be actually hearing her voice. Urte is a philosopher. She's works primarily in the philosophy of psychiatry, but also in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of biology, the history of medicine, and neighboring fields. She's particularly interested in a colorful constellation of psychiatric phenomena—phenomena like hypnosis, mass hysteria, psychogenic conditions, and (the topic of today's essay) the placebo effect. There's almost certainly more to placebo than you realize—it's a surprisingly many-layered phenomenon. Here, Urte pulls apart those layers. She talks about what placebo can and cannot do, the mechanisms by which it operates, the ethical dimensions of its use, its evil twin nocebo, how it is woven through the history of medicine, and a lot more. She argues that, though we've learned a lot about the placebo in recent decades, we have not yet harnessed its full potential. As always, we eagerly welcome your comments about the show. Feel free to find us on social media, or send us a note at manymindspodcast@gmail.com. We would love to hear your suggestions for future episodes, your constructive criticisms, really your feedback of whatever kind. In 2002, a Catholic nun arrived in Gulu, a town in northern Uganda, to help set up a sewing school for locals. For years, the town had been the target of brutal attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army, led by the warlord Joseph Kony. The rebel group was known for kidnapping children and forcing them into becoming soldiers. As the LRA was being chased out of Uganda, those who were captured arrived at the school seeking refuge. Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe shares the shocking stories of those who escaped captivity with George Crafer.(Photo: Sister Rosemary at St Monica's. Credit: Sewing Hope Foundation)
Clearview Girls Academy is revolutionizing the therapeutic care provided to the young girls in their boarding school, going beyond traditional treatment to integrate neurosomatic intelligence at every level of the organization. By changing the way both staff and students understand the nervous system, they're paving the way for more effective self-regulation and community healing. In this episode, Stephanie Ray, licensed social worker at Clearview, shares the academy's holistic approach to trauma care and the powerful impact they've seen in students' personal and collective healing. Integrating NSI into their program has reshaped the healing process for students and their families, and given students the tools and knowledge to navigate their trauma responses more effectively. Stephanie highlights real-life examples of how nervous system education has led to profound changes in the behavior and emotional well-being of Clearview students. She talks about the incredible shifts in the girls at Clearview — just imagine going from feeling stuck in your own story to actually leading the charge in your healing journey. Dr. Sohom Das (@dr_s_das) is a consultant forensic psychiatrist who works in prisons and criminal courts to assess and rehabilitate mentally ill offenders. He is the author of In Two Minds: Stories of Murder, Justice, and Recovery From a Forensic Psychiatrist. What We Discuss with Dr. Sohom Das: Telling the difference between someone whose treatable madness is causing them to act out and someone whose irredeemable, criminal badness makes them a permanent danger to society. Over 97% of the mentally ill defendants with whom Sohom works experienced trauma in childhood. Comparing and contrasting psychopaths and sociopaths. I wrote about the health benefits of using continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) more than ten years ago in The 4-Hour Body. At the time, CGMs were primitive and hard to use. Levels has now made this technology, and the unique insights that come from it, easy and available to everyone. Levels is making glucose monitoring simple, helping you see how food affects your health through real-time feedback. I started tracking my glucose years ago to learn more about what I should and shouldn't be eating (including quantities, time of day, etc.), based on objective data from my own, unique physiology. Keeping my blood sugar stable is critical to my daily and long-term health and performance goals. Furthermore, poor glucose control is associated with a number of chronic conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and obesity. It's important. If you're interested in learning more about Levels and trying a CGM yourself, go to Levels.link/Tim.*This episode is also brought to you by LMNT! What is LMNT?
