Podcast Title: God, Money & Me – Part 1: E for Enough Description: What does it mean to steward money God's way? In this episode, we dive into the biblical principle of stewardship—managing what God has given us with trust, not fear. Jesus spoke about money more than faith and salvation combined, not because He needed it, but because He knew how much it could control our hearts. When we honour God with our first, we bring our finances under His lordship. If you've ever wondered how to trust God with your resources, this episode is for you. Because stewardship isn't about how much you have—it's about who it belongs to. Tune in as we kick off the God, Money & Me series with E for Enough.
Luke 16:1-13. Rev. Ben Cunningham. Recorded live at Church of the Resurrection in New Orleans, LA on November 17, 2024.
Our world is quite chaotic right now. That's inarguable. But what has gotten us to this point? I've been on this planet for 66 years and there has never been a time like this. If you've been here the same or a smaller number of years I know the same can be said by you. It appears that we are at war. Not just globally, but internally. But the real war we are fighting is not with planes, drones, bombs, bioweapons and guns. The true war we are fighting is a spiritual war—and every great tradition has talked about it and predicted it. We submit these are the times of which we've all been told for thousands of years; and have been predicted by all great spiritual traditions and prophets. On the surface it appears to be nation against nation. Democrat versus Republican. Liberal versus Conservative. Capitalism and Democracy against Marxism and Communism. But these are all the effects of something bigger, wider and deeper…

Understanding and mastering the three human dilemmas was the focus of the new book by best-selling author James Arthur Ray and his wife, Bersabeh, titled “God, Money, & Sex”. Many people will remember James as being at the center of the sweat lodge deaths outside of Sedona, Arizona in 2009 where three participants died during a ceremony. He served two years in prison after being found guilty on three counts of negligent homicide, and his experience with the corrupt American legal system woke him up to the way the world really works when going up against the system. After 15 years, both the man and the message have changed, but the synchronicities remain. The goal of almost all human beings on the planet is to be happy. Why, even the Psalmist says, "Happy are the people who's God is Jehovah!" There's an abundant life out there for us, like Jesus calls us to in John 10:10, and perhaps 2024 is the year we take a hold of it! Pastor Bob kicked off 2024 with his message on how to strengthen the four core areas of human flourishing: God, money, career, and relationships.
Tim Alberta is a fantastic reporter whose profiles of 2024 hopeful Nikki Haley and former CNN boss Chris Licht proved illuminating and impactful (Licht lost his job days after). In his latest book, Alberta has profiled not a person but a movement: the evangelical church. It's a community that rallied around Donald Trump in 2016, 2020 and will likely do so in 2024. And it's one Alberta knows well: his father was an evangelical pastor. Alberta's new book, “The Kingdom, The Power and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism” takes him back to his hometown church to understand how the evangelical church has reshaped American politics. This message kicks off with eye-opening statistics on the pervasive stress caused by financial concerns, emphasizing the need for a Kingdom-focused perspective. We navigate through Jesus' timeless teachings, dissecting three powerful parallels—Heaven/Earth, Light/Dark, and God/Money—unveiling a transformative understanding of how we should view our finances and resources. The heart of the discussion lies in overcoming financial fear by changing our focus. Pastor Anthony Wood encourages us to ask three pivotal questions daily: - Who is my master? - Where is my focus? - What am I investing in? Every contribution, regardless of size, matters in the Kingdom. You won't want to miss this!

Have you ever wondered how to make the most of the talents, gifts, and blessings that God has entrusted to you? As we see in the Parable of the Talents, each one of us has been uniquely blessed by God with talents, resources, and opportunities. It's up to us to be faithful stewards of God's divine provisions – no matter how big or small they may seem. Explore how faith can multiply even the most modest offerings, all in service to God's Kingdom.
God's instructions about money in His word go beyond tithing. It involves generosity, and as followers of Jesus, we should be generous people. In fact, this kind of generosity is unique to Christianity because we don't give to get applause from men. We don't give for tax breaks. We don't even give for what we can get. We give because God first gave to us!
Tithing is a topic that can cause a lot of confusion among believers if you see it as being part of the old covenant. But is that the case? The reality is that not everything in the life of a Christian is as simple as Old Testament or New Testament. But when you look at scripture, you see that the Old Testament lays the foundation of tithing, and the new covenant of grace only raises that bar—making it clear that Christians should be tithing today.
Money is one of the top three topics that Jesus addresses throughout scripture. He knew that tithing — submitting one-tenth of our income — was not a financial issue but a heart issue for all of us. Tithing is how we honor God with our finances by returning to God what is already His. We are only stewards of managing what God has given us, including our income. When we don't prioritize tithing or give the full tithe, we are robbing God and robbing Him of the opportunity to bless us.
What do you think of stewardship? Many people think of it as a dusty old church word that's been used so much that its power has gotten lost. The truth is, stewardship is every choice that you make after you say yes to Jesus. In this episode of Couch Time, I sat down with John Putnam to dive into the topic of what stewardship really means and how Smarter Stewardship can help us find a deeper understanding of stewardship, faith, money, and our relationships. John Putnam launched his first business after college, then started his financial services practice and ranked as one of the top advisors in the world. He closed his practice in 2012 to launch his generosity ministry helping families, businesses and their advisors design innovative charitable strategies. He is the author of the book He Spends She Spends and in 2021, started John Putnam & Company- Helping Faithful Stewards Navigate the Opportunities and Tensions Around Wealth, Faith, and Purpose. He is “over-married” to his wife Anne for 30+ years, and has three kids, a son-in-law, and a grandchild on the way. John has so much wisdom to share on this topic and I am so excited to share it with you today. Make sure to tune in!
