It's a special Giving Tuesday episode and I'm joined by Brandon Davis, president of National Christian Foundation (NCF) Carolinas, to explore how generosity brings love, hope and healing in the aftermath of disasters like Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Brandon shares inspiring stories of resilience and practical ways to support impacted communities through giving and prayer, encouraging everyone to play a role in both immediate relief and long-term recovery. In this episode, we discuss: The transformative power of generosity The role of generosity in supporting disaster relief and recovery How NCF facilitates impactful giving Integrating prayer and action in responding to crises Key Takeaways: Generosity is a powerful expression of love and faith, as shown by NCF donors and so many others who have increased giving, sending more grants and funds to disaster relief. Local non-profits and ministries have focused their mission into disaster recovery, clearing roads, housing volunteers, and more, aiding communities in Western North Carolina. Prayer is central to impactful giving, inspiring donors to support with spiritual intent and sustained commitment. “Prepare the way with prayer. Sometimes we jump to doing without preparing the way with prayer. So, I have to remind myself and others around me constantly to prepare the way with prayer.” - Brandon Davis “My prayer is that [this episode] would inspire you and encourage you in your generous journey to impact the culture for God's glory, whether that is in Western North Carolina, your church, your city, your community, your nation, or somewhere else in the world.” - John Putnam Resources Mentioned: How to Help Victims of Hurricane Helene: https://www.ncfgiving.com/stories/how-to-help-victims-of-hurricane-helene/ How to Give Effectively in Times of Crisis and Beyond: https://www.ncfgiving.com/stories/how-to-give-effectively-in-times-of-crisis-and-beyond/ CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! Many think Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived…and much of his God-given wisdom is about managing money.John Putnam joins us today to talk about the 3 Money Moves of Solomon—so you can be just as wise.John Putnam is a Strategic Stewardship Coach, a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA®), and the founder of Money Made Faithful, a financial discipleship marketplace ministry. The Wisdom of King SolomonScripture makes it clear just how wise Solomon was. In 1 Kings, we learn that God granted Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, surpassing all others in wisdom. So, what financial principles did Solomon advocate?1. Be DisciplinedThe first principle is to be disciplined. Proverbs 13:11 states, "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." Discipline in this context means making small, wise financial choices consistently over time, which leads to long-term success. This approach helps build a strong foundation for financial stewardship.2. Be DeniedThe second principle is to deny oneself. Proverbs 21:20 reads, "Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it." Denying immediate gratification helps prepare for future uncertainties and ensures you are better positioned to seize present opportunities. It fosters a wise stewardship mindset and focuses on God's plans for your life.3. Be DeterminedThe third principle is to be determined. Proverbs 10:4 says, "A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich." A clear vision, mission, and values are crucial for financial success. Determination helps create a focused approach to stewardship, impacting your life and leaving a lasting legacy.Timeless WisdomThese principles are timeless and apply to all stages of life. Whether in your twenties or seventies, the wisdom of disciplined, self-denying, and determined financial stewardship remains relevant. Sharing and applying these traits can create ripple effects through eternity. For more insights from John Putnam, visit MoneyMadeFaithful.com, tune into the weekly Money Made Faithful podcast, or follow @MoneyMadeFaithful on Instagram and Facebook. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently started pricing some options with my financial advisor but sought additional guidance. Matthew 6:28-29: “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”John Putnam is a certified financial planner, a Certified Kingdom Advisor, and founder of Smarter Stewardship, a marketplace ministry. HOW DO YOU COUNSEL PEOPLE WHO WORRY ABOUT MONEY, ESPECIALLY WITH TALK OF A LOOMING RECESSION?John Putnam discusses Matthew 6:28-29 and what it teaches us about God's provision and the importance of not being anxious.Focus on God's provision, as shown in nature, to minimize worry.Striving, or being overly concerned with the future, should be replaced by thriving, or being present in the moment God created.Anxiety does not add value to life; instead, it distracts from experiencing God's blessings. WHAT DOES REPLACING STRIVING WITH THRIVING LOOK LIKE?Replacing the struggle of striving with thriving involves being present in financial moments, patient, and generous, aligning with Jesus' approach to life.Being present in financial moments God gives, avoiding debt which can delay God's provision.Being patient, following Jesus' example of intentional ministry without haste.Being generous to others as a way to combat worldly worries and emulate Jesus' actions. HOW IMPORTANT IS UNDERSTANDING OUR ROLE AS STEWARDS IN THIS CONTEXT?John emphasizes the importance of stewardship, highlighting that everything belongs to God and leaving room for God's intervention in our finances and life can lead to peace and amazement.Acknowledging everything as God's provision leads to peace. As stewards, we should play our part but also allow God to work in our lives.Realizing the holistic provision from God helps replace worry with thriving. SUMMARY OF JOHN PUTNAM'S ADVICE ON MONEY AND STEWARDSHIPJohn Putnam concludes by encouraging people to focus on the overall provision from God and not let money concerns hinder enjoying life's blessings.Replace worry and striving with a focus on God's overall provision.Embrace the specialness of life and God's goodness without being held back by money concerns.Trust in God's plan and stewardship to lead a fulfilling life. In this episode, Jeff and John discuss: The tension in opportunities.Slowing down the snowfall.Bringing your family into your generous giving.Saying “no” with grace and problem-solving. Key Takeaways: Have courage to say “no” to the things that, while good, are not in alignment with your current and future goals.God is a God of clarity and unity. Spouses need to be on the same page of giving.Success breeds success. The more you are known to be generous, the more opportunities you will have to be generous. You don't have to say “yes” to all board seats or generous giving moments. If you say “yes” to things that aren't right for you, you are taking the position of someone who would thrive in that spot. Asked if he'd like dinner, a budget airline passenger asked, “What are my choices?” The attendant responded, “Yes or no.” When you're on a budget, you may forget that you still have choices and flexibility. Today John Putnam joins Rob West to talk about the “3-D Budget” and how it can help you get your priorities straight. This is Faith and Finance - biblical wisdom for your financial decisions.John Putnam is a Certified Financial Planner, a Certified Kingdom Advisor, and founder of Smarter Stewardship, a marketplace ministry.I recently came across the 3-D budget you offer as a free resource at SmarterStewardship.com and I really want to share this with listeners as a fresh, new way to look at their spending plans. Why is that important?Over time, your budget categories can begin to look “the same” and you can overlook the simple options you have for control, efficiency and impact to reach your respective financial goals. So often, we look at our budget and forget an important fact: All expenses are not created equally. How does your 3-D budget help someone get better control of their money? It's designed to remind you of the expenses you have each month and categorize them in a way that creates a fresh perspective that can highlight related opportunities. This can refresh your goals, decrease flexible outflows, increase cash flow and provide a written record that can be shared with your spouse, friends or advisor. What are the nuts and bolts of a 3-D budget?Imagine a grid with 3 columns: Budget, Need to pay, have to pay and want to pay.Column 1 is what I NEED to pay - needed, but flexible (ex. Internet, cable, dry cleaning, maybe ‘rent').Column 2 is what I HAVE to pay – payment that is contractual or required (ex: credit card). The third column is what I WANT to pay – 100% optional (ex. Eating out, coffee shops, movies). The third column is what you can take to zero, for example, during recessions. The NEED TO and HAVE TO columns also hold opportunities for flexibility, they're just more difficult to affect. How does this help you prioritize your actions — what you can do now, or in the next few months, and even longer range planning? It helps provide a fresh perspective of flexibilities and efficiencies in budgeting for listeners and gives them additional options. You can get your own copy of the 3-D budget on the resources page at SmarterStewardship.com.Next, Rob answers these questions at 800-525-7000 or via email at askrob@FaithFi.com:What should you do with an annuity IRA you inherited from your husband who passed away last year, and you are the primary beneficiary but his brother is the contingent beneficiary and you want to the funds to benefit your children? (Rob referred the caller to a CKA professional, by going to faithfi.com and clicking the Find a CKA at the top of the page.).Should you pay for a company to guard your credit or just freeze your credit report, if you don't want to get scammed? Is it true that you don't have to worry about capital gains tax if you purchased 60 acres of raw land 20 years ago for about $1000 an acre and could sell it now for up to six times as much? What should you do if you are attempting to roll over a 401k from a company that closed in 2021, and the plan administrator is saying you need to contact the employer but they no longer exist?Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. What do you think of stewardship? Many people think of it as a dusty old church word that's been used so much that its power has gotten lost. The truth is, stewardship is every choice that you make after you say yes to Jesus. In this episode of Couch Time, I sat down with John Putnam to dive into the topic of what stewardship really means and how Smarter Stewardship can help us find a deeper understanding of stewardship, faith, money, and our relationships. John Putnam launched his first business after college, then started his financial services practice and ranked as one of the top advisors in the world. He closed his practice in 2012 to launch his generosity ministry helping families, businesses and their advisors design innovative charitable strategies. He is the author of the book He Spends She Spends and in 2021, started John Putnam & Company- Helping Faithful Stewards Navigate the Opportunities and Tensions Around Wealth, Faith, and Purpose. He is “over-married” to his wife Anne for 30+ years, and has three kids, a son-in-law, and a grandchild on the way. John has so much wisdom to share on this topic and I am so excited to share it with you today. Make sure to tune in! Are we headed for a recession? The answer is always “yes,” but no one knows when it'll come or how deep it will be. We'll talk about how you can prepare today with financial coach John Putnam.John Putnam is a Certified Financial Planner, a Certified Kingdom Advisor, author of He Spends, She Spends and founder of Smarter Stewardship, a marketplace ministry offering resources, podcasts and content.A just-released survey of economists by Bankrate found that nearly two-thirds of them believe the U.S. will enter a recession in 2023. And the Fed's rapid increase in interest rates is probably driving that. What are your thoughts on that?John reminds of the wisdom in Ecclesiastes 3:1, which tells us that for everything there is a season. There will be times of plenty, but there will also be recessions. We don't know if tough financial times for you personally or for the entire US economy will arrive this year. But we know recessions happen, and we should be prepared. When you have a plan in place, it is much easier to pivot for those plans than without any plan at all.In a time of recession, your vision can get blurry. Your mission will be challenged, and your values will be tested. And that's why prayer, scripture, and leaning more on the Body of Christ around you becomes even more important in a time of a recession.John says the first step in preparing for lean times is to spend more time in prayer and in the Word. What other steps should we take to prepare for a recession? John explains how the following things are critically important:BudgetingReining in spending and putting an emergency fund in placeMinimizing debt. Some people believe that preparing for tough financial times shows a lack of faith. But John says God's Word tells us otherwise. We know that God is the great provider, and we should not trust in our savings, but in Him. At the same time, the Bible tells us to be prudent and prepared for the lean times.Learn more about John Putnam SmarterStewardship.com.On this program, Rob also answers listener questions: How do you determine whether it makes sense to continue contributing to a 529 account? When does investing in an i-bond make sense? Is a Roth IRA better than a Roth 401k? [00:01 - 10:23] John's BIG Three #1: The reality behind the belief, “My life will get easier once I have more money.” #2: The hidden influencers of your money #3: The key “plan” that MUST come before a financial plan [10:24 - 13:35] Wrapping Up! Make sure to listen to the full interview with John to get more of his wisdom and hear his BIG DOMINO Take action… Pick ONE of the three nuggets to work on COMMIT KEY QUOTES “You'll never make a decision that is outside of the scope (or beyond the approval) of the person whose opinion matters to you the most.” - John Putnam CONNECT WITH JOHN Website: JohnPutnam.com Book: He Spends, She Spends CONNECT WITH J.R. What's influencing your decisions around money? Here's an even better question - when's the last time you asked yourself the question I just asked? When I first dug deep into what and who were influencing my financial decisions, it was eye-opening. For decades, I was influenced by all the wrong things and people and continually found myself caught in the trap of keeping up with a lifestyle that I wasn't ready to live. And the more I talk about this topic with others, I'm learning I wasn't the only one who got caught. There's one influencer that stood out among the rest, though… It's the one that sneaks up on you in ways you didn't think would. In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, financial expert and author, John Putnam, unpacks this hidden influencer and helps us get out in front of it (link in bio). In this latest episode, John and I talk about the… Reality behind the belief, “My life will get easier once I have more money.” Hidden influencers of your money Key “plan” that MUST come before a financial plan …and so much more. If you want your financial decisions to continually come from a position of strength and confidence, then lock in to today's episode. [00:01 - 14:44] Introducing John to the show John's most embarrassing moment John's background and his professional journey [14:45 - 16:55] The reality behind the belief, “My life will get easier once I have more money.” In some ways it will get easier (emergency funds, peace of mind, college fund, etc.). HOWEVER… Myth: the more you have, the easier life gets (paradox of prosperity) Reality: The more you have, the more choices you have and that automatically becomes more complex Some people are more suited to handle significant wealth than others - just the way we're wired [16:56 - 28:54] The hidden influencers of your money You'll never make a decision that is outside of the scope (or beyond the approval) of the person whose opinion matters to you the most THINK ABOUT: who's that person that makes you want to put on your best or fix up things around the house or in the car for? If you're giving people this type of power, you're creating a ceiling for yourself, especially in the areas of money How to get over the opinions of others? Must be aware that the opinions of others are a TRAP that you've fallen into / prone to fall into So many of our financial choices are not around MONEY…a lot of them have spiritual underpinnings / spiritual choices [28:55 - 34:34] What's the key “plan” that MUST come before a financial plan The math part of money is the easiest part (i.e. tax, legal, compound interest) The mission part is harder (why we do what we do, how we approach this) Marriage: The tensions around money affect each spouse differently Wealth doesn't deserve first position Practical step to adopt a more holistic view around money: PRAYER (prayer isn't preparation for the greater work, it IS the greater work). If prayer doesn't do it for you, meditate on… What is your purpose? How does your wealth support and fuel your purpose? COMMUNICATION Just talk about money without the need to have all the right answers [34:35 - 41:18] Money, Marriage, and Faith You come into marriage with your own junk, philosophies, and thoughts about money ACTION: Have simple conversations around financial topics. Ask questions like: What are the pro/cons of having a budget? How was your college tuition funded? What was the best financial advice you received? [41:19 - 44:58] Wrapping Up John's BIG domino How to connect with John KEY QUOTES “Your WEALTH cannot take first position in your LIFE.” - John Putnam “Money makes a lousy savior.” - John Putnam “The math part of money is the easiest part. The mission part is what gets complicated.” - John Putnam “When you have an audience of ONE, it puts EVERYTHING in the right perspective.” - John Putnam CONNECT WITH JOHN Website: JohnPutnam.com Book: He Spends, She Spends CONNECT WITH J.R. What You'll Hear: John was raised in a big family in a Christian household, he went through confirmation class and that is when he became a Christian 30 years later, John had a reawakening when a friend of his asked him to join him in a Bible Study called Foundations, that was the springboard for him to live out his faith on a day-to-day basis John's first job was working on a farm with his brothers, but his first real job was pumping gas at an old fashioned gas station, he learned a lot about interaction and serving others and helping solve problems John spent 22 yrs as a financial planner, starting out on the insurance side. He loved the ability to come alongside people and helping them explore what can be a confusing and challenging topic "Money was really a window into people's world...often it would lead to other conversations" "Money's that golden thread that weaves through almost every facet of our lives in one way or another" "Most of us know what the Bible says about money...they even sort of know how to do it..." but they struggle with fear of the future, greed, and regrets of the past, as well as beliefs and behaviors "A lot of guys have trouble letting go of past, poor choices" "Sometimes we might make a decision on a job based on the income, rather than what we're going to be excited about when we get up every day" John Piper said "Money is the universal barrier to God" John wrote a book "He Spends, She Spends: Why God Wants You to Live For Free", as he says "I wrote a Why-To Book" "The wise learn from experience, the very wise learn from the experience of others"-unknown "I became really enamored with the idea of having a business coach" "We're either green and growing, or we're ripe and rotting" Charlotte Leadership Forum (CLF) is a 2 year program for couples, started by 3 businessman, about being a Christian leader in your home, in your business, and in the community Halftime is a book Bob Buford wrote that a pastor put in John's hands and said "I read a book and it made me think of you". It's about moving from success to significance One of John's friends asked John if he had ever thought of his occupation as a ministry John got involved with National Christian Foundation and he closed his practice and started an NCF in Charlotte in 2012 "Look around, see what God is doing and get on board" - Henry Blackaby "A lot of people have financial strategies, rarely do they have giving strategies" If you want to be a part of mentoring group or brain trust, you don't have to spend a lot of money Find someone you respect and approach them, then form a group and go through a book Figure out what you're looking for, pray about it, and take a step Living out your faith through your work for John means clarity, unity, and alignment One important verse for John is Jeremiah 33:3 "There is so much about God and truth that is discoverable on a day-by-day basis, if we will just take the time to call, and ask and look" Go to www.JohnPutnam.com and www.NCFGiving.com

Tackling ozone pollution in Colorado (starts at 3:55): Cooler fall weather might soon bring back the bluebird skies we all love. But last year ozone levels in the Denver metropolitan area were high enough to prompt state health officials to issue ozone action alerts an average of once a week. (This summer has fared somewhat better.) During these ozone alerts, health officials recommend that children, the elderly and people with compromised lungs do not exercise outdoors. Hosts Daniel Glick and Susan Moran interview John Putnam, the environmental programs director for Colorado’s Department of Public Health and Environment, about the science, the sources (the largest being oil and gas operations), the health impacts, and policy approaches to ozone pollution. Governor Jared Polis named Putnam to tackle, among other things, a longstanding problem with the state’s air quality: parts of the state have been out of compliance with federal Clean Air Act standards for more than a decade. Last year, the Environmental Protection Agency upped the ante. It declared that parts of Colorado are in “serious” non-compliance of federal air quality standards for ozone, which we all know as “smog.” For more info on health impacts, read Susan's article. For info on in intricacies of the state's oil and gas rules, read this article by Daniel. And the CDPHE features ongoing info on ozone here. For info on the "climate strike" this Friday and climate activities over the next week, look here.
