This Sunday we welcome back guest preacher Rev. Dr. Craig Hadley! Pastor Craig grew up in Redlands, studied architecture in Montana, and then returned to Riverside to get his Masters of Divinity degree from La Sierra University. After working for a global Christian denomination for seven years, he, along with several of his friends, started Paradox Church in Redlands. Today, Paradox is one of three open and affirming churches in Redlands. A few years later, Craig graduated from Portland Seminary with his Doctorate of Ministry degree with an emphasis on Biblical contradictions. He currently lives in Redlands with his wife, Kimi (who is WAY out of his league), and his daughter, Maya (who sleeps on the top bunk in her own room) and his son, Bode (who cried tears of joy when he got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas).

His parents migrated to Michigan from Bangkok, Thailand in 1974, before settling in Southern California. As a child, Bob didn't realize how good others had it until he ventured out of the ghetto and went over to friends' birthday parties. There he'd witness the luxuries of living the American dream and of the possibilities that lay ahead. To the Chitrathorns, life in America was a gift and they were proud owners of property in America. They worked hard to put food on the table and to put Bob and his younger sister, Crystal, through school. Bob ate sandwiches with nothing but cheese on them, but he was blessed nonetheless. He learned that perspective made all the difference in life.In his mother's words, “education is money in the bank.” She teaches nurses still to this day, but she and Sakul, a factory worker, sacrificed to make a better life for Bob and Crystal. They paid for both kids to go through private high school and then helped pay for college.Their dedication and sacrifice didn't go to waste. Bob received a full ride scholarship for his first year at La Sierra University, before transferring to Cal State San Bernardino. He received his B.S. in Finance, as well as a B.S. in Real Estate, while minoring in business administration. Despite the rigorous course load, Bob graduated magna cum laude and was named part of the Golden Key Honor Society. In 2004, Bob became a financial advisor, which was an opportunity to make a good living, while helping others make the best decisions for their own financial lives. He had a short stint at H&R Block and also considered real estate, but he found his passion in personal finance. While Bob was attending CSUSB, his parents were working with an agent at New York Life. Bob always sat in on their meetings. He found that by listening to his parents' goals and conveying the pros and cons of their decisions, that they would listen to him more often than their own advisor. When Bob became an advisor, it was a no brainer that Puttachart and Sakul would work with their son, who always listened to their needs. With over 12 years of industry experience, he now has hundreds of clients beyond his parents to guide and influence. Bob recently joined newly established Simplified Wealth Management to help grow a new brand and to help shape the next generation of financial advisors. In 2016, Bob contributed a chapter to best selling author and esteemed motivational speaker, Brian Tracy's book. Suthipong Robert Chitrathorn (or Bob for short) came from humble beginnings. Born to parents Puttachart and Sakul Chitrathorn, Bob was raised in a mobile home park in Colton, CA. Bob received a full-ride scholarship for his first year at La Sierra University, before transferring to Cal State San Bernardino. He received his B.S. in Finance, as well as a B.S. in Real Estate while minoring in business administration. He found that by listening to his parents' goals and conveying the pros and cons of their decisions, they would listen to him more often than their own advisors. When Bob became an advisor, it was a no-brainer that Puttachart and Sakul would work with their son, who always listened to their needs. With over 12 years of industry experience, he now has hundreds of clients beyond his parents to guide and influence. #119 – On this episode, we begin a series of episodes about the steps to follow as you make your list of schools to which you will apply. Be begin by presenting academics, social, and affordability, as the 3 areas in which the schools that make you list should provide you a good match. We continue by highlighting the importance of the experience that you will enjoy in a school, as being central to your education. In essence, your college education will be more than the collection of classes you take, and will include all other extracurricular activities carefully drafted by the schools themselves. Jankel and I present the 5 steps that we will present in the following episodes, starting with Step # 1: Uncovering Your Personal Preferences. On this step, we begin by discussing the importance of choosing schools in locations appropriate to you. We describe the differences between urban, suburban, and rural campuses, and the experiences students will enjoy at each. We also present New York University, Villanova University, and Pacific Union College as examples of each. You will find the show notes for this episode at https://www.collegemetropolis.com. Before 1973's landmark Roe v. Wade decision, abortion in California was illegal for both doctors performing and women seeking the procedure. In From Back Alley to the Border: Criminal Abortion in California, 1920-1969 (U Nebraska Press, 2020), Dr. Alicia Gutierrez-Romine, an associate professor of history at La Sierra University, examines the experiences of doctors and patients in southern California during the mid-twentieth century. For doctors, performing abortions carried a good deal of risk, including extensive sentences of jail time. For women, the procedure was often safe, but not always, and carried risk of infection and even death. Women could use resources like the Pacific Coast Abortion Ring, a network of doctors willing to perform abortions, or even cross the border into Mexico, but every aspect of illegal reproductive medicine carried risks, moreso if patient or doctor were Black or poor. This is a relevant book and Gutierrez provides a window not just into the past, but into a post-Dobbs American future. Dr. Stephen R. Hausmann is an assistant professor of history at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Learn more about your ad choices.
