Have ever wondered how to truly instill in your child the truth about who God is? A person's view of God affects their entire life. The view of God that our kids have will likely determine whether they will embrace biblical Christianity for themselves or not. Imparting this knowledge is an essential, not optional part of parenting our kids in the faith.  But what does that look like with feet on the ground? Where do we start? How young do we start?  Today I've invited Elizabeth Urbanowicz from Foundation Worldview to answer these and other questions.  Resources shared in today's episode:  ctcmath.com  The Unhurried Homeschooler Unhurried Grace for a Mom's Heart The Four-Hour School Day Foundation Worldview: The Attributes of God Foundation Worldview (Please check out my latest book, The Four Hour School Day: How You and Your Kids Can Thrive in the Homeschool Life on Amazon, durendawilson.com, or your favorite bookseller!)

SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about the importance of teaching our kids tools to empower their minds. In the process of talking about conscious communication and the conversations I have with my kid has made me realize that what I am passionate about is making sure that kids know the tools to empower their own minds because I have seen the impact it has with my kid. As parents the thing that disconnects us from our kids is the fact that we don't  create the safe spaces where we can ask questions they really don't tell us because we probably are too busy taking care of the big things of keeping them fed, educated, safe and clothed. With social media, bullying and cyberbullying especially in children and also teenagers and young adults may be affected by what others may say about them if they are not grounded on who they are, it's never too early to begin empowering the belief systems of our children about themselves and teaching them how they can reframe things and empower their own minds so they are prepared when they go out in the world. To be grounded in oneself and who you are with the tools to communicate gives young people power to be able to choose their battles, choose when they should say something or brush it off, to find the confidence to express themselves transparently, honestly and authentically. When you reframe a thought, what someone else says, a habit, you change the meaning of it with the context that is applicable. There's a difference between teaching a technical tool and modeling it through interaction and conversations and also modeling it in our own lives, this helps our kids pick it up unconsciously as a tool and would replicate that with time. As parents we must embark on the journey of learning these tools, learning emotional intelligence, listening to our own self-talk and reframing the negative thoughts to empower ourselves. Despite what most people realize, everything happens through communication. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 18 minutes! Elizabeth began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, she realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. She created curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ. Isabel tells us about the differences in homeschooling in various regions and why is it SO IMPORTANT that we teach out children about the fiat system and gold and silver. Fiat money is a government-issued currency that is not backed by a commodity such as gold. Fiat money gives central banks greater control over the economy because they can control how much money is printed. Most modern paper currencies, such as the U.S. dollar, are fiat currencies. 199: What Our Parents Taught Us About Sex and What We're Teaching Our Kids

Now That We're A Family

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2023 66:11

Today we are talking about how we plan to talk to our children about sex and how we've already talked to them about it. This is going to include a brief history of how our parents talked to us about it. We feel we have so much to learn about this and don't want to run away from the scariness or daunting aspect of this conversation. We want to lean into it and embrace the role that we have in our children's life especially in this area. Hopefully we can encourage you to do the same with your children. As a parent, especially with something as crucial as God's sexual design, you want to be the first one in line to talk to them about this. When you are the first one to tell your child about something, that shapes their perception of the truth and then they compare everything else they hear to that truth that you shared with them first. As parents, we want to be the first ones to share God's standard for sex and sexuality. Everything else can then be seen in that light, rather than picking up a bunch of ideas here or there and comparing them. We live in a very sexually confused world, and we don't want our children to be confused. We want to be the initiators of these types of conversations in our home. We want to put ourselves in the position to be the first people our kids go to for questions, embarrassing thoughts, uncomfortable thoughts or unfortunate situations they find themselves in. We are naive in this area. We've never done this before. This area, like any other area, we want to be surrendered and open to the Lord's leading and open to receiving counsel. We know we do not have it all figured out and will probably have to pivot at different points in time. We need to remain unified together as husband and wife and seek the Lord on this topic, like everything else involving raising our children. AT Parenting Survival Podcast: Parenting | Child Anxiety | Child OCD | Kids & Family

OCD wants us to take its threats seriously. It wants us to debate with it, argue, and come up with solutions to circumvent the issues it presents. Afraid of germs - let's think of ways you can avoid it.Afraid you'll turn into something you aren't - let's remind yourself that you are a good person.Afraid you forgot something - let's develop ways you can remember. All of these solutions are created based on the validity of what OCD is saying. When we learn how to unhook from the stories OCD wants to sell us, we weaken OCD's grip.In this week's AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore how these issues can show up and how we can teach our kids and teens to not get caught in OCD's trap.
