Easter 2026: Good Friday Meditation Service
Good Friday Meditation on "I Thirst."
Why do Christians call Good Friday Good?
Jesus, the Love at the Heart of Everything – Today is Good Friday when we remember the crucifixion of Jesus and his hours on the cross. The Good Friday Meditation is given by the Rev. Will McLean, our Pastor of Spiritual Formation, and the scripture is the account of the crucifixion and hours on the cross as recorded in Luke 23. Will begins by noting how unsettling it is to be in this service with the story of the crucifixion, no flowers, no paraments on the table, altar or pulpit or lectern. He also points out that we as individuals have unsettling experiences. In addition, Jesus is suffering crucifixion, the ultimate disgrace and punishment in that era. But we note that from the cross Jesus utters those words, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Then he assures one of the convicted criminals being crucified with him that today that criminal will be with him in paradise. And, finally, he offers, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” These offer, in this unsettling time, love of forgiveness, invitation, and trust, all of which are a good foundation of grace. The church Jesus thus established extends our arms to the world in the knowledge that we can trust our deepest selves to God's love.
Good Friday Meditation
Good Friday Meditation | Today in Paradise (2014)In today's episode of the podcast, as we head into Easter weekend, we are releasing a standalone meditation that Darrell offered for Good Friday in 2014.In this message, Darrell reflects on the conversation between Jesus and the thieves on the cross in Luke's Gospel. As one man turns toward darkness, the other turns toward light, recognizing that the suffering man beside him is actually a king. With a simple request—“Jesus, remember me”—the thief receives far more than he asks for: the promise, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” In this meditation, Darrell explores the surprising generosity of Jesus, who takes even the smallest opening of faith and responds with grace beyond measure. We're also excited to share that a new book from Darrell is now available. The book is titled It Is Finished: Meditations on the Death of Jesus. This short collection of reflections offers rich perspectives on the cross and the meaning of Jesus' crucifixion. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Good Friday is the darkest and most solemn day on the Christian calendar. Yet, because of Jesus’s sacrifice—a sacrifice that changes everything—it truly becomes good. In this Scripture meditation, we step into the scene at the cross, where Jesus is crucified between two criminals. We witness the reactions of those around Him—the mocking soldiers, the mourning crowd, the two criminals beside Him. And in the midst of it all, we hear Jesus’s powerful words of grace and forgiveness: "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing." Even in His suffering, Jesus extends mercy. Through this Good Friday meditation, you’ll be invited to: Enter the scene and observe those around the cross. Reflect on the words and actions of Jesus. Sit at the foot of the cross and thank Him for what He endured for you. Take a moment to pause, reflect, and let the weight of this day settle in. As you listen, may you encounter Jesus’s love, grace, and mercy in a deeper way. Get your free Lent Journal here. Here are some additional helpful links: Download your free LENT guide here. When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

Persevering Love – Today is Good Friday, the time of solemn remembrance of Christ's crucifixion. The Rev. Aimee Baxter is delivering the Good Friday Meditation, and the scripture reading is the Fourth Gospel's account of the trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus. Rev. Baxter first referred to the series from several years ago, “WandaVision,” that built on the grief Wanda experienced in the death of Vision. Rev. Baxter said that many of us sit in loss and sadness, too, and she pointed out how much of that is demonstrated in the narrative of the trial of Jesus, then his crucifixion. Even Judas grieved his betrayal of Jesus and ended his own life. Peter, who denied even knowing Jesus, reacted in grief and rage in cutting off the ear of a soldier. And well beyond that, we can imagine the grief of the closest disciples of Jesus, and certainly of his mother who stood at the foot of the cross. But throughout the narrative, Jesus asserts the presence of the love of God and demonstrates it in his own acceptance of what he deemed must be. Here we are on Good Friday, participating together in a very solemn and disturbing remembrance, and yet we know that through it all there is God's beckoning love, and Easter is on the horizon. It is persevering love that will support us through our grief.

In the shadows of Good Friday, Pastor Jen takes us to the final hours of Jesus' life and examines the fact that everyone was frustrated and angered by his refusal to answer their questions. In what ways do we still try and force Jesus to say and do what we want? And what can we learn from his silence?

A “staggering” church abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Baltimore has come to light involving more than 150 Catholic priests and over 600 children over 80 years, with decades of coverups. How can religious people do such terrible things? On this Good Friday, let's consider why, then let's take three practical, biblical steps in response. Join Brandon and Liv Booth for a special Good Friday episode where we meditate with you on the compassion that moved Jesus to suffer and die for you. We begin by reading the Good Friday Litany from the ancient Mozarabic Breviary. And then contemplate the seven last words of Christ from the Cross and the prayers of Joachim Mynsinger of Frundeck (1514-1588). We know you'll find this both moving and uplifting--a fantastic way to deepen your own prayers this Good Friday. ---- The music used in this episode is: “Fall Asleep” by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License
