In this compelling episode of The Child Psych Podcast, hosts sit down with Emmy-winning filmmakers Matthew O'Neill and Perri Peltz, the producers of the groundbreaking documentary "Can't Look Away: The Case Against Social Media." Together, they unpack the alarming truths uncovered in their investigation: how today's most popular social media platforms are deliberately engineered to captivate—and often endanger—children and teens.Through powerful real-life stories, insider testimonies, and whistleblower accounts, the documentary reveals how sophisticated algorithms exploit young minds, fueling addiction, mental health crises, and, in some tragic cases, irreversible harm. O'Neill and Peltz share behind-the-scenes insights into what they discovered about Big Tech's hidden playbook, why these platforms resist regulation, and what parents, educators, and policymakers must know to protect kids online. This eye-opening conversation is a must-listen for anyone concerned about the intersection of technology, youth mental health, and the urgent need for accountability in the digital age.To watch this incredible documentary, please go to: https://www.jolt.film/watch/cantlookaway?PatreonCome on over and join us on Patreon where we have bonus episodes, extra episode content , toolboxes , discounts for our courses, our ebook, a parent community and so much more - we would love to have you! Second Sunday after Pentecost Bible Readings Isaiah 43:8–13, 2 Timothy 1:3–10 Worship Folder Pastor John Melke Sermon text: Luke 8:26-39 A Demon-Possessed Man and a Herd of Pigs 26 They sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, a man from the town met him. He was possessed by demons and for a long time had not worn any clothes. He did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. In fact, the unclean spirit had seized him many times. He was kept under guard, and although he was bound with chains and shackles, he would break the restraints and was driven by the demon into deserted places. 30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion,” because many demons had gone into him. 31 They were begging Jesus that he would not order them to go into the abyss. 32 A herd of many pigs was feeding there on the mountain. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 The demons went out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned. 34 When those who were feeding the pigs saw what happened, they ran away and reported it in the town and in the countryside. 35 People went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet. He was clothed and in his right mind, and the people were afraid. 36 Those who saw it told them how the demon-possessed man was saved. 37 The whole crowd of people from the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were gripped with great fear. As Jesus got into the boat and started back, 38 the man from whom the demons had gone out begged to be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home and tell how much God has done for you.” Then he went through the whole town proclaiming what Jesus had done for him. Kiwi icon Lucy Lawless has shifted her focus. She's made the move from actor to director – her debut film a documentary about Margaret Moth, an unconventional war correspondent. The documentary ‘Never Look Away' premiered at last year's New Zealand International Film Festival and is coming to Rialto Channel today as a special celebration of International Women's Day. Lawless told Jack Tame she was approached by Moth's best friend to make the documentary, and was immediately swept up by the idea. “I wrote back immediately, I mean, within 90 seconds, making all these crazy promises,” she told Tame. “Saying, I will find the money, I will find the producers – the story has to be told.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dave and Paul are back! That's right the brothers are here to talk about six more films that struck a chord with them this week. Including, "The Panama Papers," "Joint Security Area," "Best in Show," "A Taxi Driver," "Backdraft," and "I Saw the Devil."
Last week we looked at the Greek word apherontes eis, which translated literally is “away from look toward.” And we shared how we must look away from certain things if our eyes are going to focus on Jesus Christ. This week Dr. John Snyder and Teddy James share specific things we must look away from. First on the list is the temptation to long for the old life. This common refrain is found in the book of Exodus. The Israelites complain that life in Egypt was better than walking in the desert with God. The Christian can be tempted to look fondly upon life before Christ. We must fight this. Second on the list are sins that perhaps were not very tempting at one time, but they are now. It will be impossible to run the race of life with Jesus if we hold on to sins such as greed or the idolization of people's opinions. The third item to look away from are the good things. Paul said he counted all things as rubbish. He was willing to let go of all he knew previously, all his “right” upbringing, in order to gain Christ. If we as individual Christians or careful churches take pride in our past relationship with God, we will not run today's race well. Today on our show, we bring you a story by Alison Colwell. At age 8, Alison was responsible for making sure her mother's epileptic seizure didn't kill her. In this essay, Alison takes us to a moment in the hospital where if she'd looked away, her mom might have died. Alison's essay is an excellent example of hot topic cold prose and is contained in a very short moment. We will go into detail about what we mean by hot topic cold prose and why the tool is so effective. Alison's essay is called Look Away.Alison Colwell graduated from the BFA program at UVIC and is now the Executive Director of the Galiano Community Food Program, a charity focused on increasing food security on Galiano Island. She is a single working mother of two children with mental health challenges and a survivor of domestic abuse, all of which inform her creative writing. Alison was recently awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Grant to work on a series of interconnected essays that weave fairy tales with memoir. Alison has been published in Rising Tides, Folklife Magazine, The Fieldstone Review, the NonBinary Review, The Fourth River, The Humber Literary Review, The Ocotillo Review, Daily Science Fiction, Flash Fiction Magazine, Crow & Cross Keys, The Drabble, and Tangled Locks Journal and is forthcoming in Two Hawks Quarterly and Hippocampus Magazine.
