In this episode, we speak with Tom Burden – Inventor and CEO of Grypmat. Tom invented Grypmat to solve a problem he experienced as an Air Force Mechanic working on fighter jets. In 2017, Tom appeared on Shark Tank with Grypmat – scoring a deal with Mark Cuban, Richard Branson and Laurie Greiner. In 2018 Tom appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in its Inventions of the Year publication. That year he also won a Gold Edison award and was named to Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 list. Grypmat has grown from a garage startup to a maturing company with millions of dollars in revenue.
On today’s episode, I’m chatting with founder and CEO of Grypmat, the multi purpose non-slip flexible tool tray. Coming from a small conservative farming town in Ohio, this week’s guest didn’t grow up in an area that encouraged becoming hugely successful. Struggling with imposter syndrome, he began his working life in the Airforce National Guard so he could go to college and study mechanical engineering. From his early days playing with lego, he’d always had a knack for innovation so it was no surprise that on identifying a big pain point in his job as a jet mechanic, he set about creating a solution. Tired of his tools sliding off the curved surface of the aircraft, he took inspiration from the non-slip phone mat in his mom’s car and Grypmat was born. Bringing the product to life is only the beginning of his incredible story as he quickly sold to the likes of NASA, the FBI, Disney and secured fans in the Shark Tank judges where he appeared to successfully pitch his idea. Named one of 2018’s best innovators by Time Magazine, here’s what it’s like to be Tom Burden. Shop Grypmat here and follow them on social media here @grypmat

Today on the podcast I am joined by Tom Burden the founder and CEO of Grypmat a multi-purpose flexible tool tray that keeps your tools in place and organized while you work on cars, planes, or anywhere else that you might need tools. Tom came up with the idea for Grypmat after serving in the Air Force as a jet mechanic, and after leaving the Air Force he dove into the startup world and launched his company. The Grypmat is a favorite of mechanics and DIYers all over the country and even caught the eye of Marc Cuban, Richard Branson, and Lori Grenier who all invested in the company when Tom appeared on an episode of Shark Tank. During this episode, Tom and I discussed what it was like to start your own business after serving in the Air Force and if his military background was a pro or a con in starting a business, what he has learned from his Shark Tank investors and what appearing on the hit show was like, and we also got to talk about his experience running an eCommerce business with a partially remote team and how he plans to continue using remote work after COVID.
In the latest episode of The DL, Diesel Laptops Founder and CEO, Tyler Robertson, is joined by Tom Burden, the CEO and Founder of Grypmat. The innovative Grypmat product line is a flexible multi-purpose tool tray that keeps your tools in place. Grypmat has been featured on Good Morning America, Shark Tank, and even on the cover Time Magazine.
Tom Burden was an F-16 mechanic in the Air Force, and every day, one of the most painful parts of the job was having his tools slide off the aircraft. Lucky for the Air Force and all of the mechanics who came after him, this mechanical engineer made a decision: to solve that problem, no matter what. And, with some inspiration from his mom’s dashboard mount for her phone, he developed the Grypmat. Tom has become a frequent visitor to The PAST Foundation, and the kiddos just love hearing his story — because it’s awesome. We are constantly telling teachers, schools, and members of our community the same thing: tap into the thing that you're passionate about. But, for many, it’s hard to take action on this admittedly esoteric advice. However, when they hear Tom’s story, it makes the esoteric concrete; it makes the idea of finding and leveraging your passions and talents feel doable, no matter what age you are. So, we love that we’re now able to share his story on the podcast because we truly want everyone in the world to feel like they’re capable of finding their superpower and turning that into a career. Tom even has a great hack for finding something you’re passionate about if you have no idea where to start. Ep #42 - My guest this week is Tom Burden, a former Air Force F-16 weapons mechanic, that went on to create and sell Grypmat, a flexible, non-slip rubber mat he invented to hold tools. Tom raised $700,000 to build his business through Kickstarter and Shark Tank, where one of his backers included Sir Richard Branson. The Grypmat product has gone on to grace the cover of Time Magazine and led Tom to be featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30. The business has grown to doing $4 million in revenue in 2019, more than double what it brought in during 2018. Tom is now planning an expansion into retail, with a lower-priced, smaller-version of the Grypmat for home mechanics.
