The first report from a seven-year inquiry into undercover policing in England and Wales has been published, finding that undercover policing deployments were unjustified and would have been "brought to a rapid end" if the public had known what was going on. First commissioned in 2015 by then Home Secretary Theresa May, the investigation is aiming to discover the truth about undercover policing over the past 50 years and provide recommendations for the future. On the Sky News Daily with Niall Paterson, our Home Editor Jason Farrell explains the history of ‘spycops' that led to the inquiry, and Kate Wilson, an environmental activist who was deceived into a two-year intimate relationship by an undercover police officer in 2003, talks about her experience. In May 2012 Home Secretary Theresa May vowed to create ‘a really hostile environment for illegal migrants', heralding in a set of policies which require landlords, employers, healthcare workers and others to check people's immigration documents, which creates a barrier to accessing work, housing, healthcare, banking and other services. Most of these measures were introduced through the Immigration Act 2014 and expanded in the Immigration Act 2016. But what has been the impact of the decade-long political project to make the UK ‘tough on immigration'? In this episode Michaela Benson and Ala Sirriyeh are joined by Zrinka Bralo, CEO Migrants Organise. From a starting point of recent headlines focussed on 10 years of the Hostile Environment, they discuss how this made visible structural racism within the UK, brought borders into the everyday lives of migrants, and how it has become normalised, working insidiously through the language used to talk about migration. From the Rwanda plan and channel crossing pushbacks, to the public welcome of little Amal and outpouring of charity around Grenfell, Zrinka calls for migrant justice and the need to build bridges not walls. You can access the full transcripts for each episode over on the Rebordering Britain and Britons after Brexit website. In this episode we cover … The Hostile Environment Everyday bordering Migrant justice Quote What happens to immigrants is just a dress rehearsal to what happens to all of us. And if we're not awake, and alert and acting, the human rights are going to be taken and taken away from us, and we're not going to be paying attention. — Zrinka Bralo Where can you find out more about the topics in today's episode? In 2012, then Home Secretary Theresa May announced the plan: "The aim is to create, here in Britain, a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants." The idea, borrowed from counterterrorism, was to make life so difficult for unwanted visitors that they would give up and go home. Instead, the hostile environment became a policy of systemic discrimination against all immigrants, authorised or not, their British families and any person that could be mistaken for an immigrant. And rather than leaving, many were pushed into illegality by changing rules, long waits and exorbitant fees. Colin Yeo, immigration lawyer, author of Welcome to Britain and founder of freemovement.org, explains how the policy came about and what it's meant for Britons, wannabe Britons and the country's own future. ★ Support this podcast ★
This is Part 1 of two episodes on the British Government's immigration policy called the "Hostile Environment Policy" instituted under then Home Secretary Theresa May, who later became prime minister. The "Hostile Environment Policy" targeted UK's Black immigrant population and forced the deportation of thousands of immigrants from the Caribbean, many from the Windrush generation who had entered the United Kingdom legally and at the invitation of the British Government in 1948 to help rebuild the country after its devastation during World War 2. In this episode, our guest, British lawyer, lecturer, and author Colin Bobb Semple helps us to understand how Theresa May's racist immigration policy called the Windrush Hostile Environment policy targeted the Black community and led to the deportation of countless people of the Caribbean and African descent from the UK from 2014 onward. We learn what is the Windrush, and the Hostile Environment Policy, what took place in the UK, and why the Windrush forced deportations occurred. Colin is an experienced law lecturer tutor, accredited advocacy trainer. He trained prospective barristers as a Senior Lecturer at the City Law School, City University in London for over 20 years. He was awarded the lifetime award by the Black Solicitors Network Group in 2007 for contributions to legal practice and legal education. He also received teaching excellence awards by the City Law School, City University, London, and was a law revision consultant. And he's going to explain what that is to the government of Guyana from 2010 to 2012. He has authored several books, including "English, Common Law, African Enslavement, and Human Rights" in 2012, "Race, Jail, and Bail" in 2012, as well as numerous articles including "English, Common Law, Slavery and Human Rights" in 2007.
The ‘hostile environment’ - the anti-migrant policy announced by then-Home Secretary Theresa May in 2012 - has extended border policing into universities, healthcare, schools, and other sectors, forcing workers in those sectors to enforce immigration policy. Within higher education, international students and staff now face regular passport checks, and an obligation to report their exact whereabouts daily or weekly. Unis Resist Border Controls (URBC) is a national campaign made up of British, EU, non-EU, migrant students, lecturers and university workers opposed to Home Office surveillance and border controls on UK campuses. Advocating for free movement and free education, in the belief that all migrants matter, and that borders kill knowledge, URBC has been working to resist these increasingly draconian measures. We are joined this month by Sanaz Raji and Caoimhe Mader McGuinness, from URBC, to talk about the impact of border controls in higher education. --- For an exclusive discount on some of our books published on this subject, go to: plutobooks.com/podcastreading

Home Secretary Theresa May says the UK is facing a terror threat "perhaps greater than it has ever been", and this week's anti-terrorism bill includes tighter airport security. But two psychology professors say current screening methods used at airports, where security agents check the behaviour of passengers for "suspicious signs", need an urgent upgrade. Professor Tom Ormerod from Sussex University and Coral Dando from the University of Wolverhampton, designed a new conversation-based screening method and when they tested it at international airports, including London Heathrow, they found it was 20 times more effective at catching airline passengers with false cover stories than the traditional "suspicious signs" method. Claudia Hammond asks them how the results from this study will affect airport security screening. If you have extremely suspicious thoughts, or you hear voices that other people can't hear, traditionally these are seen as signs of a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia. On Thursday this week a major new report from the British Psychological Society will call for a radical change in the way we think and offer help to people who are experiencing psychosis. Claudia Hammond discusses how our knowledge, attitudes and treatment of psychosis and schizophrenia have changed over the past decade with anti-stigma campaigner for Time to Change, Nikki Mattocks, author of "Eyebrows and Other Fish", Anthony Scally, consultant psychiatrist Dr Shubulade Smith and BPS Report Editor, clinical psychologist Anne Cooke. Thirty years ago psychologists found that if people were instructed to open their mouths in a smile, their mood improved...even though they didn't know they were smiling. When we feel happy, we smile, and the brain gets so used to this that it seems to happen the other way round too. Now new research suggests the same thing could happen when we walk. Johannes Michalak from Witten Herdecke University in Germany, found that when people were trained to walk in a happy style, their memories became more positive. Producer: Fiona Hill.
