Family, this week we're celebrating political wins in Colorado and Boise, shining a light on the Curve Foundation's Power List, and spotlighting NFL player Khalen Saunders for creating space in sports for LGBTQ athletes. From politics to pop culture, Anna brings the stories that matter to our community—amplified, unfiltered, and with plenty of heart. In Politics: Colorado Comes Through: The state House passes groundbreaking bills protecting gender-affirming care, shielding trans kids and their families, and recognizing abortion as a constitutional right. Boise Stands Tall: Despite Idaho's ban on flying non-governmental flags, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean affirms the city will keep flying the Pride flag. The best part? The bill has no enforcement mechanism. Sometimes resistance is as simple as staying the course. In Culture & Entertainment: Curve Power List Honors Anna: That's right — our very own Anna DeShawn made the 2025 Curve Power List! Shoutout to the Curve Foundation for recognizing LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary folks shaping culture and policy. What an honor to be listed among such icons. Chicago Tops Queer Travel Safety Index: Misterb&b names Chicago the #1 safest city for LGBTQ+ travelers in the U.S., beating out places like Seattle, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Come through, Chi-town! NFL Allyship in Action: Saints player Khalen Saunders is hosting a football camp for LGBTQ+ athletes in St. Louis, co-led by bisexual former Cowboy RK Russell. Saunders says being an ally means showing up — and he's doing just that. GLAAD Awards on Hulu: Don't forget to stream the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, now on Hulu. Let's celebrate those who tell our stories right.
On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the 2025 Power List, which features 52 of the most powerful women in foodservice. They explain why a list such as this is still necessary in closing the gender parity gap within foodservice leadership, and how these 52 women provide a model for women in the development pipeline across the industry. Then they discuss one of the brands with multiple members on the Power List: El Pollo Loco, which has recently become a target of Sardar Biglari, an investor who has previously acquired Steak ‘n' Shake and attempted to acquire Cracker Barrel. They also talk about the Consumer Price Index and up-to-date inflation data, discussing what it all means for restaurant operators. And in this week's extra serving, managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister joins to talk about recent executive changes, which most recently included the president of Subway North America stepping down from his position. Finally, we share an interview between Leigh Anne and Abby Taylor, founder of Playa Bowls. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss Hooters' bankruptcy filing and the fact that it would be entirely franchised moving into the future — with leadership from the original founders. What can Hooters due to become relevant to the U.S. customer again? Then they discuss Yum Brands' announcement that CEO David Gibbs would retire in 2026, opening up a coveted position at the largest restaurant company in the world. That leads into a conversation about the tariffs that President Trump has put in place on global trade partners, which will undoubtedly have an effect on restaurant companies. And in this week's extra serving, senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn joins to talk about Technomic's updated Ignite data, which reveals performance among the biggest chains in America in 2024. Finally, we share an excerpt of an interview between Bret and three powerhouse leaders at Shake Shack — CFO Katie Fogertey, COO Stephanie Sentell, and chief growth officer Steph So — as a preview to this year's Power List, which has the theme Women in Foodservice. Rose Gray, the business relationship director at Fox World Travel, got her start in the travel industry by walking into the agency her family used for their own personal vacations, and convincing them to hire her. At the time, she says that travel advisors were more “order-takers” and less “consultative,” and Gray would spend her days handwriting airline tickets and typing itineraries on a typewriter. She then spent the next 35-plus years in the industry, adapting to various technologies as the profession evolved, all while exploring and embracing new ideas. Now, as the business relationship director and tour manager at Fox World Travel (the 25th Largest Travel Agency on Travel Weekly's Power List), Gray still works with other advisors and traveling clients, albeit in a different way. She leads groups of clients all over the world as a tour manager for the agency, and is often found broadcasting her own radio show and podcast from the road. In this episode of Humans of Travel, listeners will hear Gray reflect on her decades in travel; how her female role models helped shape her; how she has embraced new technologies (hello, artificial intelligence!); and her best advice for new-to-industry travel advisors on how to be successful and have a fruitful, long-lasting career. Washington, D.C.-based company &pizza is known for being an unconventional brand, from its oblong pies with quirky toppings, to its texting-only “Pizza Plug” hotline and political messaging. Although the emerging brand was once a significant part of the foodservice cultural zeitgeist (cofounder Michael Lastoria was named to NRN's 2021 Power List), the company has been fairly quiet for a couple of years. As it turns out, &pizza has been brewing up some changes behind closed doors, including the company's first CEO transition, from Lastoria to newcomer former Rave Restaurant Group COO and executive vice president, Mike Burns. Now, “we're back,” Burns said, as &pizza is ready to take on a new era of growth and opportunity (including franchising), while rekindling that rebellious streak that made &pizza stand out from the rest of the growing fast-casual pizza sector.Burns joined the latest episode of Take-Away with Sam Oches, guest hosted this week by NRN senior editor Joanna Fantozzi, to talk about why he was drawn to the brand, the significant digital technology changes coming to &pizza, and why customers will want to consider getting an ampersand (&) tattoo soon.In this conversation, you'll learn more about:Why it's important to find a fitting successor when you step back from a founder roleWhy &pizza made the shift from in-house-built technology to an outsourced tech stackHow to make sure you don't outgrow your technology capabilitiesHow to make a digital rewards program stand out (Hint: it starts with naming your loyalty program, “The Dead Presidents Club”)How to maintain a unique, plucky, startup-like spirit, even when you have sizable development plans in the works

Carnival Corp. last week placed its first cruise ship order since the beginning of the pandemic: It will add 180,000-gross-ton ship to Carnival Cruise Line that will be the fourth in its Excel class. The very next day, Royal Caribbean International also announced an order, for another Oasis-class ship. Both clock in the 6,000-passenger-plus size, on par with other new ships coming into the industry. This week host Rebecca Tobin talks the era of megaships with cruise editor Andrea Zelinski and Geoff Cox, the vice president of sales and marketing for Power List agency KHM Travel Group. Among our topics: What these ship orders mean for Carnival and Royal in terms of corporate direction and passenger demands, the prevailing love for big ships, competition with theme parks and resorts, and how far the cruise industry has come since its Sovereign days.
