In this episode we take a look back at Gary McKinnon's alleged hack of NASA and the Defense Department. He reportedly discovered a multitude of UFO images and files implying that the U.S. government was colluding with aliens or using alien technology to build an advance parallel society leaving the rest of us behind. Gary McKinnon was obsessed with UFOs; and believed governments were covering up evidence that UFOs exist. In the year 2000, he decided to do a little digging. Gary was a computer expert so what better place to dig than on US government computers? What he found was so shocking that it sent the entire United States government into a full-blown panic. In fact, the US spent 10 years trying to prosecute Gary. He was looking at 70 years in federal prison. But what information did Gary find that could cause the US government to become so aggressive? It was the most high-profile case involving a hacker in the history of Britain, and at the time the story broke, one of the biggest stories in the UK, if not the world. Gary McKinnon, a Glasgow-born computer programmer, was arrested at his apartment flat in Wood Green, north London. The charge: hacking United States military computer systems within just weeks of the September 2001 terror attacks. McKinnon was dubbed “the 911 hacker,” although his reasons for hacking really had nothing to do with the terror attacks. But the most incredible part of McKinnon’s story hadn’t been the fact that he, a UK hacker with a dial-up modem, had accessed numerous U.S. government computer networks. It had been what he was looking for... and claimed to have eventually succeeded in finding: evidence of Unidentified Flying Objects, and efforts by the government to cover them up. Janis Sharp tells the extraordinary story of her battle to prevent her son Gary McKinnon being extradited to America. Recorded at a special event with Liberty. Janis Sharp is a musician/composer and writer of children's books. Her son, Gary McKinnon, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, had a lifelong obsession with UFOs and while searching for evidence thereof, wandered into NASA and Pentagon computers. The lives of he and his mother Janis changed dramatically one morning in March 2002 when Gary was arrested for hacking into US government computers. Two years later, on 7 October 2004, the US government filed a request for Gary’s extradition. Fearing that Gary would take his own life rather than face being taken away to face seven counts of up to ten years each, Janis’s extraordinary battle began. Nick Pope and I will be discussing the incredible case of UFO Hacker Gary McKinnon. This extraordinary case has erupted into an international relations event that has been discussed publicly by President Obama and Prime Minster Cameron, and has strained relations between these two powerful allies. We will ask Nick how badly this case has damaged relations between the two countries, what UFO secrets have been revealed and what more if any may be forthcoming. Author, journalist and TV personality Nick Pope used to run the British Government's UFO project at the Ministry of Defence.
