New UK infrastructure projects + why this benefits housing

Rob discusses recent announcements made by Chancellor Rachel Reeves regarding significant government investments in infrastructure across the UK. The episode highlights key projects such as the expansion of Heathrow Airport, the development of Europe's Silicon Valley between Oxford and Cambridge, and the redevelopment of Old Trafford, home of Manchester United. Rob talks about how these infrastructure improvements can positively impact the housing market, suggesting that property investors should pay close attention to these developments. KEY TAKEAWAYS The UK government has announced significant investments in infrastructure, including the expansion of Heathrow Airport and improvements to various rail and road links, which are expected to positively impact the housing market. The development of East West Rail between Oxford and Cambridge is projected to add £78 billion to the UK economy over the next decade, highlighting the importance of transportation links in driving economic growth and housing demand. Potential changes to the planning and infrastructure bill could simplify the process for obtaining planning permissions, facilitating more development projects and potentially increasing housing supply. Major infrastructure projects, such as the redevelopment of Old Trafford and the lower Thames crossing, could lead to increased housing demand and property values in surrounding areas, making them important considerations for property investors. BEST MOMENTS "The biggest announcement was the Heathrow expansion... To have a third runway at Heathrow would be very, very suitable." "If you are looking to buy or you're looking for long-term growth, buying in and around these areas with major infrastructure projects might be quite beneficial." "The government are looking at making some changes to the planning and infrastructure bill... that might make planning permissions a lot easier." "If there is a new road tunnel going between Tilbury and Gravesend, have a look at the surrounding areas and the potential impact that that could have." "When we're looking at infrastructure projects around the UK, it's important to bear in mind what's going on, because that can have a massive impact on your investment decisions." *) Israeli army and Zionist settlers unleash terror upon Palestine Illegal Israeli settlers have shot dead a Palestinian and wounded three others in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. This is part of more than 1,270 Zionist terror attacks targeting Palestinians since October last year. At least 680 Palestinians have since been killed and nearly 6,000 others wounded by Israeli army and the illegal settlers in the occupied territory. *) Palestine lambasts Ben-Gvir's call to build synagogue at Al-Aqsa Mosque Palestine has denounced a call by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to build a synagogue inside Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinian Authority said it was an attempt by Ben-Gvir to drag the region into a “religious war”. The Authority added that the Palestinian people will not accept any harm to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, “which is a red line that cannot be crossed under any circumstances”. *) Turn them in now or face prison — New UK law targets ‘zombie-style' knives Police in the UK are urging owners of “zombie-style” knives and machetes to hand them in as part of a national month-long campaign launched by the government. The soon-to-be-outlawed bladed weapons can be surrendered at stations in England and Wales. The government announced on August 19th that from September 23rd, it will be a criminal offence to possess these weapons in the UK. *) Trump blames Harris and Biden for ‘humiliation' in Afghanistan Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has used the third anniversary of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan to pin the chaotic troop pullout on his Democratic rival for the White House. Trump blamed Kamala Harris, the vice president, and President Joe Biden for what he termed a “catastrophic” withdrawal. Trump said “the humiliation in Afghanistan set off the collapse of American credibility and respect all over the world.” *) Pacific Islands Forum urges polluters to pay for climate damage “If you pollute, you should pay,” Pacific leaders say. Emissions-belching nations have been challenged to stump up for climate-related damage as a key Pacific islands summit opened. Current UK China policy is defined by the three main concepts of protecting national interests, aligning with allies and engaging with China on key matters such as climate change where possible. But how are these approaches coordinated and prioritised? The previous UK government was prepared to live with the ambiguity inherent in this approach, arguing that complexity of relations with China demanded a policy which takes into account the divergent and simultaneous trends in UK–China ties. But while in opposition, Foreign Secretary David Lammy articulated his party's intention of conducting ‘a full audit across Whitehall of our relationship with China so that we can set the direction and a course'. In this episode, host Neil Melvin is joined by RUSI Senior Associate Fellows Isabel Hilton and Andrew Cainey to discuss how Labour will approach the balance between security, values, economic interests and environmental concerns and the difficult trade-offs inherent in dealing with China.

Two higher education leaders share their perspectives on what the sector needs in the short and long term.  For this episode of the Campus podcast, we talk first to Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, about universities' valuable opportunity to make a first impression, where Labour might turn for advice on higher education and how the sector may “tilt” in a quest for balance and stability.    Our second guest, Chris Day is chair of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and vice-chancellor of Newcastle University. He details what is at stake for a sector amid a funding crisis, job cuts and department closures – and where new revenue streams might come from – as well as hope that the 4 July election has brought a chance to reset the sector's relationship with Westminster.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Notes on new UK AISI minister, published by Pseudaemonia on July 6, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. As of today, Peter Kyle is the UK's new Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, which means he's the elected official responsible for UK AISI. Here are some brief notes I found on Peter Kyle's stance on AI (all from his Wikipedia page). Peter Kyle was appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology in September 2023. In October 2023, Kyle said that a future Labour government would reduce regulations on technology companies in the development and use of AI and "put it to work for everyone from every background." In November 2023, Kyle outlined Labour policies to impose stricter regulations on general AI research companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic with stronger requirements for reporting, data-sharing, and user safety. Kyle has also proposed the creation of a 'Regulatory Innovation office', which would expedite important regulatory decisions. In February 2024, Kyle announced that Labour would scrap the existing voluntary testing agreement between technology companies and the British government, instead creating a statutory regime in which AI businesses would be required to share with the government the results of their test data. He claimed that this would enable the government to better understand the risks involved in AI and the challenges it could pose to different industries and society in general. He also met with representatives of the United States government and AI companies in Washington, United States, including Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Google, Apple, OpenAI, and Anthropic. New UK government figures have revealed the sharpest increase in absolute poverty in the UK for more than 30 years. According to official statistics, 600,000 extra people came into this category last year. Rising energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine are partly to blame, but that doesn't tell the whole story. According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation the trend has been getting worse for decades. Their most recent report published in January outlined how current levels of poverty are around 50% higher than they were in the 1970s – before Margaret Thatcher came to powe. Adrian Goldberg hears from Joe Elliott, analysis manager at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and Jospeh Howes, from Chief Exec of Buttle UK, which provides grants for children and young people in crisis. He is also Chair of the End Child Poverty Coalition.Produced in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg. Funded by subscriptions to the Byline Times. Made by We Bring Audio for Byline Times Hosted on Acast.
