The very first podcast of 2025 is up, in which I talk through some of the lessons learned in the preceding year, and some of the possible outcomes these lessons will dictate in the current one. I discuss how the fall of the Syrian Arab Republic has completely reshaped the Middle East's geopolitical landscape, and how the Banderastan War has fundamentally changed the dynamics in Europe. I talk about how we are, in many ways, returning to a non-Westphalian approach to relationships between states and governments, and how the conflicts of 2024 proved the total bankruptcy of the so-called "rules-based international order". I close with a call for a return to what truly works and makes sense, and end on a hopeful note with a prayer, as befits a podcast for the start of the year. Admittedly, this was perhaps not one of my more on-point podcasts - I am battling some sort of viral infection, which seems to be similar to a milder version of the Coof, and it still has not worked its way out of my system. Why do wars start? How can we avoid them? Do countries wage wars whenever it suits their own goals? Or are wars a product of failed understanding and military madmen?  These are questions at the centre of the study of war and peace. But for too long, the field of international relations has answered them by scavenging data from European history alone.   To better understand the human capacity for peace, we need to understand military history more broadly.  Or so argues David C. Kang, a professor at the University of Southern California. A Korean American scholar of international relations, Kang argues that the histories of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam give us lessons that no reading of European countries could: lessons about neighbouring countries living in peace for centuries. Yes, there was violence. At times, there was war. But peace between these countries prevailed for stunningly long periods. And contrary to standard theories of war and peace, this wasn't achieved by a “balance of powers”, nor by an inability to sustain military operations. But is this too peaceful a picture of East Asian history? Didn't China keep up bullying Vietnam? What about the epic wars started by Japan? What about the Mongols, the Great Wall, and China's expansion on its Western frontier? And what, if anything, can this tell about war and peace in the 21st Century? Doesn't the “Thucydides trap” make a war between the US and China inevitable? We discuss these and many other questions in this fascinating episode. In 2021, Paul Mason, a veteran journalist familiar to viewers of Newsnight and Channel 4 News, published a book called How to stop Fascism, History Ideology, Resistance. His book came in the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection in Washington DC and the spectre of rising authoritarian nationalism across the world. History of Modern International Law till the end of 18th century Authority of the Organized Church was beginning to be challenged as there were constant struggles between religious authorities and rulers known as Crusades (12th and 13th centuries). Introduction of Modern Printing in the 15th Century disseminated knowledge undermining feudalism. Renaissance – 15th Century Treaty of Tordesillas – 1493 – Between Isabella I of Castile, Ferdinand II of Aragon and John II, King of Portugal establishing a new boundary or demarcation line. Development of Concept of ‘Sovereignty' by scholars like Bodin, Machiavelli, Hobbes etc. (15th and 16th centuries).Increase in the number of independent states led to formation of customary rules of International Law involving diplomatic relations. Earlier, International Law was called ‘Law of Nations'. Treaty of Amasya establishing peace – 1555 – Between Ottomans and Safavids after their war. International Law was influenced by Natural Law (Inherent Law or Higher Law based on God, Nature and Reason) (15th and 16th centuries). Important scholars like Vittoria, Belli, Brunus, Suarez, Gentilis were present during this period. Formation of Dutch East India Company – 1602 – Colonial Expansion. Establishment of lex mercatoria by Britain as international trade was increasing at a frantic pace. The greatest of the early writers is Hugo Grotius and is often called the father of International Law (16th and 17th centuries). De Jure Belli ac Pacis (1625) by Grotius dealt with actual customs that were followed by the states of the day. The concept of Freedom of Seas was also explained and put forth by Grotius through his work Mare Liberum (1609). Peace of Westphalia – 1648 – Two treaties signed in the Westphalian cities of Osnabruck and Munster ending the thirty years war that brought peace to the Holy Roman empire. Peace of Utrecht – 1715 – Series of treaties – Between Great Britian, France, Portugal and Spain for end of War of the Spanish Succession. 1758 – Scholar Emer De Vattel published the famous work of ‘The Law of Nations'. 4th July 1776 – US Declaration of Independence – Brought the concept of ‘self-determination' to the world stage. 

By the end of 1646, two massive problems plagued the negotiators. For France, the matter was Alsace, a huge chunk of territory along the sensitive Rhine region, which had long served as a buffer between the French and Imperial spheres. For Sweden, Pomerania, a slice of land along northern Germany's Baltic coast, was the central issue. The process by which the powers solved these questions, the compromises they agreed, and the implications they had, are all examined here. Although in the context of Westphalian negotiations, the decisions reached were important, it is in them that we see the birth of new empires - the French, the Swedish, and one fascinating outlier, that of Brandenburg-Prussia. Truly, the foundations for such significant political and strategic acts which later defined early modern Europe were laid here. Everything happening in the war is striking from an information perspective. The civilian sector, he adds, must prepare for war at this point as they could be used to incite or escalate conflict. There could be Denial Of Service attacks, deception, and other planned operations to impact the military by attacking people relevant to its personnel. Families of military personnel are especially targeted by these attacks. This is a side most people aren't prepared for. It's a pleasure being with you. Last time you blew up Sweden, now it's Brazil's turn. So, I think we talked about Sweden, France, Germany, all the sovereignist movements in Europe. It was Europe. I guess now Latin America's my beat. Now you're going Latin. All good. (HoO) You can follow Matthew, of course, at Matthew Tymrand on GETTR, on Twitter, and he is regularly on War Room giving an update of what's happening. I think Matthew and Gateway Pundit are the two main sources for actually getting an update on what's happening in Brazil. But Matthew, Brazil, the elections were the second and 30th of October with the 30th being the runoff. It's been six weeks ago and you've been on this from day one, day to day following it. Do you want to give us an overview of what's happened before we get into some of the nitty gritty stuff. (MT) Sure. So I've been following Brazil. I never expected Latin America to be my beat as we discussed last time. I've got Polish family roots, Polish citizen, a lot of time in Europe working, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain. You know, Europe's my beat, you know, working right wing party, covering... Populist movements, Sovereign Justice movements. But last year in September, 2021, I went down to CPAC Brazil to speak about media and other issues and was with Jason Miller. And we met with Jair Bolsonaro, and set up a meeting for us. And that was widely covered. And we were detained at the airport by the Supreme Court, which as we'll discuss is not really a court as much as a dictatorship, a bunch of political appointees who are running rough shot over Brazilian constitution and rule of law. They detained us and interrogated us and wanted to know who we met with and wanted us to literally write down names of politicians, journalists, activists, very Stasi-like so that they could be added to the enemies list. Obviously we declined to take part in such exercise, but we were held there and we were finally let go. And I sort of wanted to understand what just happened there. I knew it was bad. I knew that there was a strong bifurcation in Brazilian society along political lines, much like the US, much like Poland, much like many countries in Europe and the West. And what I discovered in the following eight, nine months was as it really did deep dives into the people, the players, the politics, that it is been a judicial dictatorship and autocracy by the judiciary. Judges in theory, judges are supposed to adjudicate rule of law, constitutionality, especially at the Supreme Court level. And here you had a Supreme Court led by a guy who was appointed by the same political cabal as Lula De Silva, the guy who just ran against Bolsonaro for president. And by background, he was president before. And he was convicted of many crimes. Public corruption was sent to prison. But he appointed a lot of judges before that, and after he went to prison, his vice president slash chief of staff, Chief of Staff there, sort of the second in line to the throne in the executive branch, Dilma Rousseff, she served as president for a few years before she was ensnared in the same corruption game, the very famous Operation Car Wash, where the Marxists, and they really are, Sao Paulo Forum Marxists, people that sort of come from the same sort of ideological bent, and this includes Chavez and Maduro, and we'll go through some of the Forum Sao Paulo people, that have swept Latin America. But she was also convicted and impeached. And then Temer came in and served out the rest of her time before Bolsonaro was elected. Now, all these judges on the Supreme Court, not all of them, two were appointed by Bolsonaro and eight were appointed by Lula, Dilma and Temer, Lula and Dilma, eight, and then Temer was one. Alexander de Marais, this Supreme Court head, was appointed by Temer, a former Sao Paulo prosecutor. And he basically prosecutes from the bench. And he has given this court, just, you know, Audubon Bismarck said politics is the art of the possible. He's just taking control. These are not endowed rights, constitutionally endowed rights that the court has. But as I wrote about in this long article that I erred to really break down this dynamic ahead of the election a week or so ahead of the first round of the Brazilian election, I wrote this or published this in September. The first round was October 2nd, as you noted. And I wrote that these are guys that if you could roll up the powers in the U.S. Corollary would be the Supreme Court on a constitutional law basis, the prosecutors like the heads of the DOJ, or Justice Minister in European parliamentary parlance, the head of the prosecutor's office, the head of the investigative criminal division. They've got subpoena power. They've got a law enforcement that they have taken over, like an FBI or an MI5, I think it would be, in the UK, where it would be domestic criminality, the Police that would come and have sort of jurisdictional rights, federally, nationally, as opposed to locally. And you rolled up all these powers in the US, like Sonia Sotomayor and Eric Holder and Jared Nadler and Merrick Garland and legislative members of the legislature who are political animals. You rolled up all these powers, you would have Marais in the Supreme Court. And so of course, they're running rough shot over Brazilian society with these powers in their hands. They're censoring journalists, they're arresting journalists. They are Censoring politicians from Bolsonaro's camp and they're arresting them. Over the last two to three years they've been at war with the right. Everything that the right accuses them of, they then get convicted of. They say the right says the court is assaulting democracy and Constitutional law, so then they get arrested for the charge of assault on democratic institutions. If you criticize the court for overreaching, for abusing its power, then they actually arrest you or censor you, force you to be de-platformed by big tech under the guise of it's an assault on, institutional democracy, which is incredible projection. We know the left likes to project, but I mean, this is whole new levels of evil hypocrisy in a political sphere. So they've put politicians under house arrest, journalists. There's a journalist who has been in exile in, in the US. Recently, Marais revoked his passport. They tried to execute an Interpol red notice against him because of what he writes. Again, journalism, writing. This is not violence. This is not calls for coups or insurrection. This is him writing very, very well-founded in constitutional law about their overreach. And so they tried to get Interpol to arrest him in the US and extradite him to Brazil so they can put him in prison. Obviously, Interpol declined to execute this red notice because they saw the frivolity and the abuse that was inherent in it. So I mean, that's sort of like how we entered into this election cycle and at the same time. Very important to note, Lula De Silva was convicted by three separate courts long before Bolsonaro was appointing any judges anywhere. This was 2015-16, the trials, convicted by three separate courts, 12 charges, 19 judges, 19 judges across three courts, so like tribunal instead of juries, it's you know a bunch of judges on a panel, unanimously voted to convict him. You know people 2012, when he was pushed out of office there were protests in the street and the military helped defend those protests because they saw what he was doing it was widely exposed that he was selling state assets to China for cash in bags laundering it through car wash chain of car washes owned by this party's friends that's hence the name operation car wash and it was his judges that he appointed or his subsequent president appointed or the subsequent president to that appointed, who let him out of prison, vacated his sentences and then annulled the convictions and expunged his record. So let him out of prison, annulled the sentences, first pending never-ending appeal, claiming that the courts didn't have jurisdiction. Now he was convictable in any court in the country because he stole from the whole country. So that's a canard, total bullshit. And then they just said, pending never-ending appeal, you're now free. And then as the appeals started, which never really went through, because before there ever was an appeal heard, they vacated and annulled and expunged his record. And why is that important? Because in Brazil, there's a law, if you're a convicted felon, you cannot run for office. (HoO) So, I mean, this seemed to be that the Supreme Court wanted Lula to run. I mean, a 12-year sentence suddenly disappears under the orders of the Supreme Court, so he can run. (MT) 580 days out of a 12-year sentence he served, and he got off light because there should have been many, many more prosecutions. And there might have been had this not played out because they were always discovering more stuff on the public corruption, whether selling state assets, diverting state funds to friends, including the mainstream media, who are truly died in the wool leftists and Marxist sympathizers. You saw on election night, when they announced it for Lula, claps, there were two places where there were audible cheers. The newsrooms of the mainstream press and the prisons. There are videos of of the prisons and everybody in the prisons is clapping and whoop, whoop, whooping about Lula. His base is narco Traficant, he even wears a hat from a from a famous Rio de Janeiro guerrila narco trafficking group called CPX He wore the hat in his limited campaigning, he couldn't really campaign too wide because everybody knows hes a corrupt convicted felon and he would be met with jeers, even when he was certified on Monday there was nobody there supporting him and the one thing the leftists do really well is they go to the streets and they protest, they turn them out, they frequently astroturf. They try to make themselves look bigger and more prevalent than they really are in terms of representation in society. Meanwhile, you've got 10 million Brazilian patriots by my estimate over the last 46 days now on the streets of every city in Brazil and predominantly obviously Brasilia the capital but also Rio, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, even places that are leftist strongholds in the north like Recife, Bahia, everywhere. And the revolution will not be televised. None of the global mainstream press is covering it all. The largest human manifestations in at least a democratic country, maybe during the late stages of communism, when people went to the street in places like Hungary, and Czech Republic and Poland, there might've been comparable numbers per capita. And remember Brazil, big country, six largest country in the world, third largest economy in the Western hemisphere, and second largest country in the Western hemisphere after US, Canada, then Brazil, massive 220 million people. And you have a measurable amount of representation per capita on the streets, rain, shine, monsoon, whatever. They're there a lot of times outside military barracks, praying and begging the military to come and save them. And this is a point Bolsonaro made that I'm absolutely co-opted and using in a speech he gave at. He invited the protesters into the grounds of the Alvarado Palace, the White House, Buckingham Palace, the presidential residence. He gave a speech last Friday, then did a demonstration and a prayer vigil on Sunday and then another one on Monday. And by the way, letting, I mean how populous is that, letting people into the presidential grounds so that he could, you know, walk up, hug people. And by the way, he could walk through a crowd and nobody would hurt him. They would hug him, they would love him. Lula cannot go anywhere without 100 plus security guards because everyone wants to rip him shred from shred, limb from limb like Gaddafi. And the police who are on his detail are tipping off the protesters where he is so they come and protest with, like when he was at a hotel last week or a week and a half ago meeting Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security advisor, because obviously they're part of the fix. Global leftism works together. If the military does not act, if they do not invoke Article 142 of the Brazilian Constitution, which is very constitutionally fitting and relevant here, it says in separated power, disputes, which certainly exists right now between the judiciary and the executive branch, as well as election fraud, they have a constitutional right to audit the election, and in their attempt to do so, the TSE, a subsidiary court to the Supreme Court, the STF, blocked them out. They wouldn't give them the machines, they wouldn't give them the source code, they wouldn't give them the tabulation data. So they have very much grounds to act and stabilize society and the Constitution says the military is the stabilizing force in society because they're the institution that's most governed and built up by the fundamentals of hierarchy and discipline and order. And if you notice on Brazilian flag, it's ordum and and progress, so order and progress. So you can't have progress unless you have order. And if you look at Latin America's history, military coups, you know, there was one 1965 that lasted 20 something years. They have a lot of belief in rule of law at this stage. Brazil is one of the most successful constitutional republics in terms of really taking to Western classical liberal standards of rule of law and freedom. They do not have the unfettered First Amendment the US has, but they do have the right to assemble and protest and use their voice, that's constitutionally protected. And then as they're trying to exercise that, Marais, who by the way is also the head of the TSC, the Supreme Electoral Court. So the subsidiary court that oversees the elections. So the Chicanery, the pure evil, I mean, they're arresting now indigenous peoples who have become protest leaders. Indigenous peoples saw they were disenfranchised because they were historically left-wing voters. All their votes in many of these precincts went to Lula, even though they physically voted for Bolsonaro. And they say, what gives? The left has used them as a tool, a device for pushing their agenda for generations. They petitioned the UN committee on indigenous rights and said, hey, what gives? You're supposed to protect their indigenous rights. But I guess that only works if we vote the right way, which is left. So they've been ignored. And now they're arresting them. arrested, they violently arrested one of the major guys, the chief of the Givenchy tribe on Monday after certification, in what I believe is an attempt to try and get the protesters to increase and escalate their volatility and then inject violence. And the left did inject violence. Antifa came in, very few, but enough that they burned some buses, burned some cars, broke some windows. And of course Reuters took Globo, which is sort of CNN of Brazil, major mainstream media, dominant media player, took their account. Bolsonaro protesters are violent and you know, set fire to cars and break windows of cars. And by the way, every car window that was broken had a Brazilian flag on it or the symbol of this movement. The Brazil was stolen flag, which is Brazilian flag that's black and white with Brazil was stolen on it. And so those are the windows getting broken, and there were even gas masks. I mean, in 45 days, 46 days, there had not been a single incidence of violence, vandalism, arson, and you know how we know there wasn't a single incidence? Because if there was even a single incidence, it would be the only thing Globo was running and the only thing they're sending to their their fellow traveling useful idiot leftist Marxists across the globe whether that's Reuters or BBC or Washington Post, New York Times, but it's been crickets. It's been crickets, in the New York Times did run a few reports, dispatches by Jack Nikis, their correspondent at Brazilian, saying that it's a little bit worrisome about the powers that Marais has taken and abused, censoring politicians. At the same time, the courts previously said that Bolsonaro should be held criminally liable for blocking trolls on his Twitter, as the same court is saying, and personal Twitter, the same court is saying, we can remove the voices of anybody we claim, as assaulting democratic institutions by criticizing us, including Villa-Kesis, one of the leading senators, major parliamentarians, House of Deputies, lower house members of the legislature, Gustavo Guyer, Nicholas Ferreira, Carlos Zambelli, tons of journalists today. They just arrested four more journalists, a mixture of journalists, a pastor and an elected. I think it was two journalists, pastor and elected. Four more arrests. So, you know, Marais has said that if the protesters stay out there, they're going to start proceedings to take away protesters' kids because they say it's child abuse. Obviously, lefties, you know, brainwash their kids and bring them to all sorts of manifestations, frequently violent ones, if you look at the Antifa types. So it's pretty fucked up there. It's pretty fucked up. (HoO) Where does Bolsonaro, because Bolsonaro basically was silent for like 45 days and suddenly had, not press conference, but he engaged with his supporters. That was on what, Friday, Saturday? And that was the first time he stepped in and said, no, we're going to win. We're going to fight this. (MT) Why didn't they say that directly? It's not in his hands. I know a lot of people around him. I've got very good sources, whether it's military people, legislative people, executive branch people in the ministries, as well as around Bolsonaro advisors. I'm getting some really good feel. Nobody's telling me anything directly because it's so fog of war. Nobody knows. Of course, when you're talking to government sources, everybody has their own agenda and strategy, so you'll hear a lot of different things. I'll talk to one guy who says, no, we're acting tomorrow. We're going to do this. Another guy goes, nothing's happening. Another guy says, we're going to do it this way in three days, and by the way, these things are probably in motion. They're just trying to push their strategy that they want and have me run it out as a reflexive sort of, you know, create a self fulfilling prophecy through the media. But the timeline is important. Bolsonaro did not concede the night of, he did not concede the next day. On Tuesday, he came out at three o'clock or two o'clock and gave a little press conference, spoke for two minutes and said, follow the constitution, we will follow the constitution. You know, if you believe protesting is warranted in assembling, that's your constitutional right, go to it. Then his chief of staff, who was kind of a technocrat, said we're gonna follow the transition protocols, also constitutionally, but that wasn't a concession. That was them just trying to figure out what their move would be. They were gonna engage in this audit. The military was blocked out in their audit. In the meantime, there's been lots of fraud discovered. Their political party, the Liberal Party, party of the party of the liberal, Bolsonaro's party, put their own report together about fraud and what did the court do with it? They fined the party 22 million reais, about four or five million bucks, and put the head of the party, who is an elder statesman in Brazilian politics, been around for generations, a very serious guy, nobody has ever accused of anything untoward, put him on a criminal law, the same fake news investigation list he's been writing, so put them on the criminal list, that they're gonna investigate him for criminal activity. Now, by the way, they're adding all sorts of other people, Bolsonaro's former cabinet members and previous in the first part of government. Now they're going on criminal lists where they're gonna be investigated by this court. There's no grounds, there's no due process, there's no probable causes we have on the US constitutional basis for such things. But hey, Marxists do what Marxists do, communists do what communists do, we've seen that all over the world. So the timeline, go back to the timeline. So he didn't say anything for a couple of days, then he went silent. A couple of times he went out, waved, moved through people, but no public statements, and I think that was smart. This is not about Bolsonaro. This is what I've tried to drum home, whether it's on Tucker Carlson or on Vantage show or on Emerald Robin show or whoever. That this is not about Bolsonaro. This is about the Brazilian constitution, the Brazilian transition in power, Brazilian elections. This is not a cult of personality. Bolsonaro, if the military acts is not gonna be engaged in a coup, this would be a quelling of a coup by the judicial dictatorship, with the military has a constitutional right to do, to defend against the sovereignty and against the sovereigns enemies, the nation states enemies, foreign and domestic, within and without. They have buffered the borders because Venezuela and Chile keep threatening that if Lula's not seated, they're gonna invade. These are one team, one dream communists. Shaba's in school. But then last Friday, he gave a speech, and then Sunday, the vigil. And in between the time, there've been some military edicts signed, expanding the reserves a week ago, and the site crashed the second they put up a site saying, if you want to be in the Brazilian reserves, and the site crashed within moments because it was so overwhelming. They just passed one yesterday, or Bolsonaro and the Defense Ministry pushed through one yesterday, about mobilization of emergency food suppliers and expedited contracting process. Tells me something's kind of up, and people I know in the military, connected to the military have been absolutely quiet with me, which by the way is a good thing, I got a big mouth, I am who I am. I'm a journalist. If I know something, I'm probably gonna run it out. So it's good they're silent with me on this. If they're gonna bring something to bear in this process, then they should be doing it by the book, by their way, and not leaking it to me or anybody in the Western or domestic media. That being said, the military has moved. There are videos all over. Yesterday morning at 4.30 a.m., what was described as, well, you know, drills or practice or, you know, routine practicing, whatever they call it, right by the Venezuelan border columns, and columns of soldiers, you know, because Venezuela is a risk point, as is Peru, as is Colombia, as is Chile. They're all led by the same millier South Paliform Marxists. And we'll go into South Paliform in a moment. So the military's moving, there've been firefights in the favelas with what's rumoured to be Venezuelan paramilitary operators that moved through these sort of drug trafficking networks. Cause if you recall, you know, Venezuela's laden with that just as Columbia was with FARC. And there's another FARC like Narco trafficking paramilitary guerrilla group that Petro, the new head of Columbia was a long time member of. So the South Palo form where all these people were incubated, people have to recall It was founded in 1990 by two people, Lula and Fidel Castro. Tells you a lot, tells you a lot. 1990 because in 89 to 91, The Soviet Union was falling. Soviet Union was the big funder of Cuba and all the Latin American, Marxist guerilla movements to try and create an Orwellian style, continental nation state construct, In Orwell were three major nation states, Eurasia, Oceania and whatever the other one was, and so this always been the vision for the latin american marxist.Simon Bolivar . He's he is to you know, whoever politically who they want him to be the conservatives hold up the Bolivarians, Bolivarianism as the Marxists do but Marxist Bolivarianism suggests we have to break down all the borders of Latin America of South America and just make one continental super state led. Of course by Marxist is right out of Orwell So Palo forum was formed when Soviet Union money stopped coming in, Cuba needed you know, how do we, you know operate this build this out Marxist workers of the world unite, so Lula and Fidel got together and all sorts of other criminals from across that continent and they incubated such wonderful political leaders and talent as Hugo Chavez Ava Morales RC, the Mora, Bolivia. Uh, Fuji Mari had some connections certainly Castillo who just tried to run this coup last week and dissolving congress, dissolving legislature, South California, the Kirchners, I mean Fernandez, I mean it's a who's who of the war, Ortega, I mean if there's a Marxist in Latin America who was incubated by South Calif and the head of the South California in Brazil, a woman named Monica Valente, she's a part, they even use words like party secretary, it's like they, when people tell you who they are, believe them, party secretary, she's head of Lula's transition now, and she said early on, right after October 30th. We need to protect Brazil's democracy like we have to protect Maduro's hard-fought Venezuelan democracy. And they really believe it. They really believe that Venezuela is the kind of democracy they'd like to make Brazil. So the Brazilian people aren't stupid. Modern history, pre-modern history, they know Latin American history, communism, and all across Latin America. What's happened in Venezuela? What just happened in Chile with Boerich and other young Marxist revolutionaries from the South Hallow Forum and Petro in Colombia? They know it. They haven't lost the plot. They get it. And we will never be communist is one of their refrains. Give us paper ballots is another one. Give us auditable ballots. And that's a whole great, you know, sock we can get into. Bolsonaro pushed it as a congressman and got a paper balloting bill, a backup paper ballot against the machines. So you have the machines, but you also have a paper ballot printout. That thing gets locked for audit purposes. And so when I was in Brazil last September, there was tons of chance in the freedom Independence Day March, give us paper ballots, give us audible ballots. Bolsonaro as a congressman, and I think it was 2016, maybe it was a little over 15, got a bill passed, which by the way, getting bills passed in Brazilian legislature, very, very tough. I mean, there's essentially, I put it on a spectrum of five different, it's like parliamentary politics, there's dozens of parties, but there's really five cohorts. You've got far right, centre right, centre, centre left and far left. So figure 20% give or take. By the way, going forward in this next session, far right and centre right are dominant because Bolsonaro down ballot pulled everybody over the line, governors, senators, lower house legislators. It was like unheard of level of galvanized unity and performance for the right in Brazil. So the fact that he lost to Lula, we all know it's bullshit. We all, there's no way. None of these politicians even exist except for his endorsement. And they won overwhelmingly in places that were left to stronghold for 50 years. That they're now gonna be led on the provincial level and the federal level state-wide by Bolsonaro people, whether they're far right or centre right. But they're all together one thing, anti-communist, anti-socialist, anti-South Paulo Forum, anti-China, anti-globalist. They believe in Brazilian sovereignty and they believe in God, which does bring them together. But so, so Bolsonaro gets this bill passed, Dilma Rousseff is president, so I guess it was pre-16. She vetoes it. Back to legislature and the Congress overrode her veto with a super super majority. Never happens. So then what happens, Supreme Court comes out, by the way, her veto was predicated on something I find hilarious. It's like truth is stranger than fiction with these idiots. She vetoed it because it would cost too much to put a printer, a hundred dollar printer next to their $20,000 voting machine. So she said, Oh, no, fiscally it would be irresponsible. Have you ever noticed socialists or communists to cite fiscal policy as to why they shouldn't Spend money, spend government money? Of course not, it's a fig leaf, it's a canard, it's ridiculous. So Supreme Court takes this congressionally overrode veto legislation and they nix it on constitutional grounds, but on bullshit. They said it would open up privacy concerns. Now at the same time, by the way, I've exposed with Argentinian forensic analyst, Fernando Ceramito, who's hiding in Argentina because they wanna really go at him, because he's exposed huge amounts of fraud, from day three after the election, we expose that Oracle has a undisclosed contract to suck up everybody's private data. So all the voting data, all the personal data, the Ministry of Information is being run out of the electoral court overseen by Marais. So more corruption, more communists, stasi tactics, they've got the Praetorian Guard and the federal police force who are arresting indigenous peoples and journalists and harassing Miller, Jason Miller and myself when we were in Brazil, detaining us, surveilling us, which the mainstream press had the day before we left that broke all the news wires there that we were being surveilled from the moment we landed, which I told them, I mean, like I've dealt with stuff Poland and Central Europe, which has been time in Ukraine, Ive spent time all over the place. So I said, we're probably being surveilled. He goes, Whatever. I said, then when that news story broke, he goes, he was like, Oh, well, you're right. And I said, well, probably gonna be detained at the airport tomorrow. And he goes, Oh, shit, I go, no, it's gonna be good. Be great. Made a big international incident. I credit Mariah for getting me off the side-lines. I wouldn't, I wouldn't have been doing jack shit on Brazil. I wouldn't have been doing, you know, deep dives into the forum and the who appointed the judges and who their friends with and what laws they're breaking and who they put in prison unjustly and under house arrest. I wouldn't have any edge on Brazilian politics and society if it wasn't for Marais detaining us and me getting intrigued. I don't like getting detained illegally. So I like to punch back. So here we are. So now I've been doing 10 to 20 hours of press today. So as a lot of Brazilians say, they want to if the military comes in and they they circumvent Lula and the completion of this coup that's been run out of the, judicial dictatorship, then there's I think there'll be a push to give me honour citizenship, which I'd be all about. I love Brazil. I love the Brazilian people. Brazilian women are the most beautiful women in the world. The food is like the best food in the world. The weather, the cities, just the whole, the people are just so awesome. They're so thoughtful. They're so intelligent. They're so motivated to protect their society. They understand the difference between rule of man and rule of God, higher natural law, and even the truckers, the truckers blockaded, these wasn't like Canadian trucker blockades, and all due respect to the Canadians, they do a great job on that. But they got busted up pretty quickly and it wasn't a huge amount of population saying we're going to we're willing to stay here forever how long it takes. The Brazilians are willing to blockade the ports and the roads and the major arteries. Brazil's one, sixth of the world's food supply. They're willing to blockade it forever if need be. They're willing to starve to protect their sovereignty because they know that if they lose it, if they lose their their constitutionally protected natural rights of natural law and their constitutional rights that that have been. That they work toward and building a robust constitutional republic if they lose that, it's gulags. I think the military knows that too. I think the military, but Lula even said last week, he even publicly stated who he's going to replace all the high command military generals with, his communist cronies. So if they're not motivated to act, then you know what, to be honest, they deserve to go to the gulag. They deserve to have their hands up. (HoO) Tell me more about the military, and I love Brazil as much as you and I've only been once, but a beautiful country. But tell me about the military, where do they fit in? Where is the clash? Where is their allegiance? I mean, you've talked about the legal side, about the Supreme Court and the battles legally, which reminds me of the same situation in the US in the 2020 elections. But over the military, which is again quite different, and I guess from anyone in the West, you don't think the military has been separate from the government or separate from the judicial is just all in one. But I guess Latin America is quite different. So where did the military fit into this? Cause I read a number of reports, the military being on the sidelines, what does that mean? And who are they accountable to? (MT) The military had, you know, a 65 page report about the, the, the elections and saying, you know, we can't prove fraud yet because you won't give us the machine source code of tabulation data, but it certainly doesn't look good. And the fact that you're blocking us out, the military and you know, Latin America's got this history of communism, then reaction back. And Pinochet was an anti-communist reactionary. He threw the communists from helicopters, which I would never condone until watching, until getting to know Brazil. To be honest, Marais and these judges who have so subverted rule of law and arrested their political enemies, just as bad, just on a level of the Soviet Union, of Stalin, of Khrushchev, of Brezhnev, of Lenin, of Jurginsky. I mean, they are ends justify the means leftist and the corrupt as shit. I mean, the Politburo will live well. You know, Animal Farm, you know, the Napoleon and Snowball will live high on the hog. And these people are totally corrupt. Their friends are going to feed and everybody else, they'll rob the wealth of the country, sell to China, give it to help buffer Cuba. You remember when Lula was there, last time he was giving Petrobras, Petrobras was a big center of the biggest company in the country. the state oil giant and they were helping buffer and support Cuba and Venezuela and selling to China. So this is a repeat. I think the military knows, given the history, there's a lot of generals who actually have not remained silent. They're not running their mouth off the way I do, the way Miller does, or the way our friends who are analysts, journalists, and political activists do, they're military guys. And by the way, Bolsonaro was a career military guy before entering politics. But they have made public statements. One of them, and a lot of these military guys have also gone into politics when they retire, very senior guys. So there's a very strong connection ideologically and politically. But there are some scumbag military guys as well. There were four guys that Paolo Figurito, an exiled journalist here in Florida who's left Brazil because he can't go back for the same reasons that Alonso Santos is exiled in Virginia. That's who they put the red notice for, revoked his passport. By the way, they've also revoked issuance of new passports because I think they don't want anyone to escape the impending communism because they want to go after everyone. I mean, this is a court that was airing private businessmen's WhatsApp messages when they were bashing the court and saying we defend Bolsonaro. So they publicized it and then they tried to arrest them. Business guys, just normal guys, not breaking any laws, just saying the court's really running amok. Okay, we're gonna subpoena the stuff because they hear about it and they leak it and then they air it all. I mean, really dirty pool, Soviet style tactics, Stasi style tactics. But Paulo Figueredo named three or four generals who were trying to push back on any military guys, who were saying we should invoke Article 142, we need to take action, saying, no, no, we'll be fine under Lula. Trust us. Palo named them publicly and effectively took them off the field. And there have been rumors in the last couple of days that they'll be fired in the next few days by the Defense Ministry in Bolsonaro. Hopefully they will. Also important to note that Bolsonaro has still elevated other generals There have been ceremonies that have gotten publicized, putting the new rank on the chest of a couple of naval guys, a couple of generals. So there is movement, but there are a few very senior generals. And by the way, Brazil is the most social media engaged country in the world. So when you lose your social media voice, whether you're a politician or whoever you are, it's a big deal there. And some of the politicians who have been leading the charge, calling out the court, who have lost it, the generals have said, that is unconstitutional. One general who was a running mate for Bolsonaro, Hamilton Mourao, a political guy now, very well respected. And again, because Brazil has so much social media engagement, these generals have like 2 million followers. They have as many followers as the party leaders, the legislature leaders in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the legislature. So they have gravitas when they say something. Hamilton Mourao was the first one to come out. This was a few weeks ago. This was right after the second round. And he said, he cited on the anniversary, the 87th anniversary of a communist insurgency, the first one in Brazil in 1935 that came from within the military. He said, we put that one down and we are on guard. We are ever vigilant. Another one said, echoed those statements a few days later. Another general said, load up on food, gas and cash, which tells you a little bit of something. Just said public announcement, public service announcement, load up on food, fuel and cash. I mean, that kind of tells you something. I think something's coming. I think they were waiting. I was incorrect in my initial assessment about the certification, which is very equivalent to the January 6th in the US with a certified president. And that's when they had Antifa come down from the hills and set buses on fire. And Reuters said, Bolsonaro supporters are setting buses on fire. Meanwhile, there's video of some of the guys who had, they turned out the next day that some of these guys they found and they were paid 200 Riyals to do it. They were vagabonds. They were homeless drifter, grifter types. And then there were some guys yelling. ...... Which means out-Bolsonaro. So, I mean, you know, but Reuters, without uncritically, unanalytic ally, just runs out what Globo says. Globo's even said, I mean, to give you an example, how corrupted this media is. They're all in the tank with the court. The court says we now need to arrest the First Lady because she was beating the protesters, aiding and abetting the illegal protests, which, by the way, are not illegal. I mean, it's a real mess. I mean, you see, and it's been so fluid. Gateway Pundit's been great on writing the stuff. It says, plug, Richard Abelson there has been covering like crazy. We talk every day. We compare notes on our sources. And I've been doing a lot of this stuff, the talking, the live action, Tucker, Bannon, you, Emerald, Gaffney on, Senator CSP, just tons of this stuff, live streams on GETTR. So, you know, very, very fluid. Another, point I do want to make just to show you how big the fix was in. In November, all eight of the Dilma and Lula and Temer appointed justices, went to New York for a meeting at the Harvard Club. They convened a conference with the incoming Lula cabinet ministers. By the way, he's supposed to be separate powers. Judges supposed to judge the law and not party with their communist cronies. After they certified him, Lula the other day, Marius and a bunch of them went and partied with a well-known, together, Lula and them. With a well-known communist lawyer, like a major communist figure down there. So, but in November in New York at the Harvard club, they convened this conference with the incoming Lula cabinet ministers and these eight communist Marxist, Sao Paulo forum, Lula, Dilma, Temer appointed judges. They booked the room well before the second round of the election months ago. They knew, they knew. And for the, you would even say that if you're in Brazil, you lose your social media. Are you even getting potentially arrested as they're doing now? So the certification, my mistake on timing was, I thought that the certification was less of a formality and more of a big deal. And what I've learned since is it's not the only big deal is does Lula walk up the ramp as they say, That's the sort of terminology. Walk up the ramp and the equivalent of a swearing in for the president where he puts his hand on the Bible in the US, walk up the ramp and accept the sash and become anointed head of state. And that's right after New Year's Day. So that'll be January 2nd or January 3rd. I think January 2nd, Monday, January 2nd. By the way, the certification was supposed to be this coming Monday, the 19th, but the electoral court moved it up to the 12th. No constitutional allowance for that exists. They just did it. Again, they are very Bismarckian. Politics to the art of the possible. Just do it, and hey, see what happens, come at me bro." So they did the certification on Monday, and after the certification Marais gave a public statement saying, mission assigned, mission accomplished. I mean, it's like, they don't even hide what they're doing, and that if you criticise them and point out the granular fallacy of it all, then you get arrested. I mean, it's right out of Sovietism. It's pretty nuts. (HoO) Where does the pressure come? Because there isn't any pressure from surrounding countries in Latin America. Democracy works to varying degrees in different countries. (MT) It's pressure from Venezuela, Colombia under Petro, Chile under Boric, Peru, that they better seat Lula or they're going to invade. Another reason you're seeing military moving around the countries from the Chocos and securing the borders. But they have no allies, which is insane. I mean a couple of people, Ted Cruz gave a moderately sympathetic statement, but none of the politicians in the West and the US and Europe, nobody even knows what's going on. Swedish press, Polish press, Hungarian press, Slovakian press, but right-wing press, alternative press, the way you and I always are. So this thing doesn't have a critical mass like the BBC or, you know, Rye in Italy or Odyssey France press or, but, you know, TVP has been good. You know, Polish television has been good. I'm a contributor there, so, because I'm a dual citizen. But they don't have any allies. I'm guessing the US politicians who are aware of this, I've talked to many of them, and just said, you know, what's going on here? You should know what's going on here, guys. I mean, Marco Rubio runs Latin American policy in this country, and he's like, the guy. Nothing, nothing. Now, if Bolsonaro does see Article 142 invoked, in theory, he has to sign a letter authorizing the defense ministry to activate the military and invoke this constitutional article. Some rumors say that it's been signed already. I would argue that the military should do this unilaterally and ignore the executive under the guise that he's a lame duck and he's essentially out of power. I know he's still in power. The problem is that the second something does happen that's kinetic and they take action, they raid the Supreme Court and the electoral court, they go out and they take the machines by force. By the way, we have a video of a Sunday in Sao Paulo a week after the second round, a Sunday afternoon, four o'clock, all the machines, not all, but a cache of machines, voter machines from this. And by the way, some of the work done on this machine shows that certain modern series are programmed by default to annul votes and to be programmed, have communication device and all the things that the laws passed on the running of the election it flies in the face of. But this one cache in Sao Paulo of machines was being moved in boxes onto the back of a truck, an unmarked truck. And it looked to be unconfirmed, but looked to be a trucking logistics company because we got the weaponized autists everywhere, that it was a truck belonging to a company that is run and owned by a PT Lula party legislator. So it tells you a lot. The law is very clear, by the way. The machines can't be touched for 60 days. They can't be disassembled, can't be touched for 60 days. So a week after they're being moved. So there's a lot of different things. But I think that if the military does take action, which I believe they will, I think they will, even rumors that Bolsonaro has resigned as president in a private military sort of convocation and given the powers of the executive branch to the military as a caretaker. I don't believe that's true, but it is floating around. So I'm throwing that out there just because it's one of the things I've heard from certain sources. I think that will get publicized pretty quickly if that were the case. But whenever anything does occur, something does occur, I believe that what you're going to see is the revolution now will be televised by the entire global media complex and it, will go, Bolsonaro executes military coup against democratic elections that elected Lula. Nowhere in those articles will it say that Lula was let out of prison by his appointees for looting the country for 10 years. Nowhere will that be said. I read something in Brookings, they're fucking embarrassment, by an analyst saying that Lula was the most popular president ever. His socialist policy, Bolsa Familia, elevated so many people out of poverty and he will win in a landslide because he's so popular and never even mentions he was convicted for anything. And nobody in the country, I mean, you go to stadiums, people are watching the World Cup in stadiums, they're watching it remotely, and they were chanting, or car races, they were chanting, Lula's a convicted thief, Lula is convicted thief. They call him Squid. His nickname across the country is Squid. And it ain't for anything good. So I mean, we're gonna see the global media, you know, take action and run an info war. And then what's gonna happen? I told this to Bannon, I'll tell it to your audience. We need to get real vocal. That's why I'm doing so many of these things because I want people to have real fact pattern. You know me and I think people can hear me. I'm nothing if not comprehensive. I will throw out facts all day long and put them into context so that we can fight back because the leftist media, the mainstream media, the global media, they ain't gonna talk facts. They're gonna say these poor maligned Supreme Court justices that Bolsonaro's trying to go over, never mention they're imprisoning journalists, they're deplatforming everybody, that their ties to South Valle forum. They'll never mention the South Valle forum and how it was started by Fidel Castro and Lula in 1990. Lula's criminal history, Lula being close to all the drug gangs, wears a CPX hat as I said. I mean his base is criminals, criminals and media. So that's a redundancy I guess. (HoO) Just to finish off, where does this leave democracy in many parts if the system is an electronic system that can be controlled by those on the left and the left also have a big hand in the judicial system as we basically saw in the States, even when it went to the Supreme Court, actually they wouldn't call it out. It's very different than where we are. I mean, in Britain, it's just the stupidity of our electorate, basically put to say, it's a paper ballot. So yeah, it's different. (MT) But you also have some really shitty issues going on there where rule of law is also under attack and it's not getting publicized. When constabularies can go to the homes of somebody for tweeting something and arrest them as we've now seen several dozen times in the provinces and these are not you know lefty strongholds then you know this is fraying you know the Orwellian dystopic vision is playing out thanks to big tech thanks to the consolidated powers of information flow that government has control or access to so i mean it is worrisome Brazil is the bulwark I say you watch Bannon and i sit on Bannon and every single time, Brazil falls the far so takes over South America, a very wealthy continent, Brazil itself, you know, one sixth of the world's food supply, but also iron ore, oil, manganese, bauxite, tin, cobalt, copper, gold, I mean, very wealthy. The most, and Amazon, stuff in the Amazon, we don't even know the drugs and therapeutics that we're going to make from species of plants and bugs and shit that we don't even, we've never even discovered yet. And that's part of the play. It's the same thing that what's her face, Maloney was saying about France and the French colonies in Africa. You know that, okay, you're so egalitarian as you rape, you're still raping the colonies of Africa, even if they're quote unquote independent, you're still treating them like protectorates. Well, if Brazil falls, then all of Latin America is gone. We saw Colombia and Chile, the two furthest generally right nation states in Latin America, at least in South America, because Guatemala is pretty decent and Honduras give or take sometimes. But you know scaled up societies that have fallen out to the foreign so Paulo in the left. Brazil falls, China owns all of South America and that's obviously a threat to the Pax American in the west and the US. I mean AMLO, López Obrador in Mexico also a Sao Paulo foreign guy. So I mean it's it ain't good and there's a reason. The useful idiots of our side, the lefties on our side who believe, oh yeah, little socialism and big government's fine and they're not even averse to communism, they're the proverbial, you know, what Lenin said, they're the capitalists who will sell us the rope with which they'll hang them. Biden, the corrupt comatose vegetable that he is, said, and obviously he didn't say it, he probably fell asleep at four o'clock after his ice cream cone or his jello, but he had said right after, like moments after the tabulation was done. Congratulations Lula for the fair free and credible elections. How the fuck would you know that one minute after the tabulation? They don't have, IRI, the International Republican Institute, whose job it is to look at election fraud around the world, silent. Organization of American states, silent. UN, silent. EU, silent. State departments, silent. NSA, silent. I mean it's like, it's a giant global fix because they hate Bolsonaro like they hate Trump. Meanwhile more popular maybe than any leader anywhere in the world. He's probably the most popular, at least in a country of more than 10 million people. We're talking 220 million people. (HoO) Yeah, absolutely, Matthew, thank you so much for your time. We need to stand with our Brazilian brothers and sisters in arms and cousins, because if they do not fail this coup, it will be Venezuela within a year. The gulags will start in a few months. Hell, he's not even president yet. They're already gulagging people for arrest today. The indigenous leader on Monday, they're already doing it. They've already censored. Matthew Tyrmand is someone who has their finger on the political pulse across Europe and he joins us to discuss the seismic events that have rocked Sweden over the past few days. In their General Election, Sweden Democrats came second with 20.5% of the vote and the left have admitted defeat with the Socialist Prime Minister resigning. The Versailles Treaty at the end of World War I has in common with the posture of the U.S. and NATO today the view that the victors in war can dictate the terms of peace, as a unipolar force. This blatant assertion of world dominance ignores the legitimate wishes of other nations, and insists on their subordination to the unipolar power. This typifies the "arrogance of power" of today's globalist war hawks, who claim the U.S. "won the Cold War", and therefore has the right to be the dominant world power. In contrast, the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years War in 1648, was based on the idea that recognizing the "interests of others" is the key to a durable peace. The outright rejection thus far by U.S. negotiators of the legitimacy of President Putin's security concerns will not be accepted by Russia. While it is better to talk than not, she said, the overall posture of the U.S. in these talks has "lowered the nuclear threshold", making the use of nuclear weapons more likely should war break out. NATO, which should have been dissolved at the end of the Cold War, must be replaced, especially since its present policy course leads to a war in which its members in Europe will be destroyed. Belonging to a security alliance which would lead to war doesn't make sense. Demonizing Putin and attacking the Belt-and-Road Initiative when the western financial system is crashing also does not make sense. In 1968 while serving or the 306th Psychological Operations Battalion at Fort MacArthur in California, during the Vietnam War, He Joined Satanic Church after meeting Lavey at theatre showing of Rosemary's Baby•

He became a Satanic priest, & worked closely with the Lavey's for over 10 years. He started having disagreements with the way Lavey was portraying Satan and how he was running the church. In The New Satanists book by Linda Blood, who was a mistress of Aquino she says they wrote letters to one another, & eventually she was able to meet him at a Temple of Set convention. A few weeks later they began having an affair. She joined the Temple, & began learning the rites, & ceremonies. She discovered that a Aquino had a fascination with Nazi memorabilia, the Thule, and Vril society and especially Himmler's occult operations. 

The Setian concept of good and evil is based on the idea that whatever is good for one individual may well be considered evil by someone else, and who is to say who is right and who is wrong? Aquino cautions his followers that "profane" society will tolerate them only if they are "perceived" to be ethical people.

So, when he got back he told his adept cult members that he'd received a vision of a new symbol for his reinvigorated Order of the Trapezoid. He told them they weren't going to focus on Aryan Supremacy, but instead, put their efforts into fighting their main enemy which was Christianity.

The temple membership turned out to consist of an odd combination of the respectable and the marginal of society. There were teachers, law enforcement and military officers, nurses, bank tellers, and secretaries, alongside former prostitutes of both sexes and the odd ex-biker or two. There were two former Jesuits. One member turned out to be the principal of a Catholic school! She and her husband, a priest of the cult, had adopted several children.

Numerous Accusations of Molestation at Child Development Center at San Francisco's Presidio Army Base.

Joyce Tobin, the wife of a U.S. Army captain posted at the Presidio, stopped to pick up her three-year-old son at the base's preschool. Small child was mimicking masturbating, & told her Mr. Gary do it. He was examined, & it was determined he'd been violated. The CARSAC workers suggested that there might be multiple victims, but the army seemed not to want to believe this.

Other children soon began to speak out, the first among what would eventually include more than sixty. Their allegations were particularly startling because many hinted at satanic activity. Some children described being taken out of the day care center to private homes on the Presidio base, and to one home off-post, where they were sexually abused. Physicians discovered that several children had chlamydia and other STDs. Gary Hambright was charged, but three months after Hambright's arrest, the charges were dropped when U.S. District Court Judge William Schwarzer refused to allow the admission of "hearsay" statements made by the child to his mother, brother, and medical examiners.

Eventually, the parents would learn of other cases at other army bases, including West Point, Fort Dix, Fort Leavenworth, and Fort Jackson in South Carolina—a total of fifteen day care centers in all—as well as at two U.S. Air Force day care centers and at a facility run by the navy in Philadelphia. In one case, a three-year-old girl had' claimed that she'd been taken to the home of U.S. Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Michael Aquino and his wife, Lilith, and subjected to bizarre satanic ritual abuse. The attorney Cynthia Angell had a date to meet a potential witness and prep her for testimony and when she pulled into the parking lot two men jumped in her car held her at gunpoint, drove her to a place where they blindfolded her, & showed a her pics a tortured, dead bodies, & played a tape of sounds of children and adults screaming in pain. They told her to drop the case or else, & dropped her back off in a parking lot. Other attorneys were also harassed, & threatened.

Rudolph Giuliani, then United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, noted that "there were indications that some children may have been abused at the West Point Child Development Center," and recommended that the Point provide them with therapy. Eleven families filed a lawsuit.

In 1968 while serving or the 306th Psychological Operations Battalion at Fort MacArthur in California, during the Vietnam War, He Joined Satanic Church after meeting Lavey at theatre showing of Rosemary's Baby•

He became a Satanic priest, & worked closely with the Lavey's for over 10 years. He started having disagreements with the way Lavey was portraying Satan and how he was running the church. Michael did not approve of the hokey B-movie imagery and wanted the church to be more serious. Lavey had became a recluse and would only speak in front of the Adepts of the congregation. He changed the way members worked there way up the degrees, & it became a for profit system where the Lavey's would take money, property, and gifts in exchange for adepthood. 

Michael decided to consult Satan on the issue. On June 21st 1975 as the clock struck midnight at his home in Santa Barbara he did a magical working, & spent 4 hours writing his book that would become the manual for the Temple of Set called, "Coming Forth By Night."

In The New Satanists book by Linda Blood, who was a mistress of Aquino she says they wrote letters to one another, & eventually she was able to meet him at a Temple of Set convention. A few weeks later they began having an affair. She joined the Temple, & began learning the rites, & ceremonies. She discovered that a Aquino had a fascination with Nazi memorabilia, the Thule, and Vril society and especially Himmler's occult operations. 

The Setian concept of good and evil is based on the idea that whatever is good for one individual may well be considered evil by someone else, and who is to say who is right and who is wrong? Aquino cautions his followers that "profane" society will tolerate them only if they are "perceived" to be ethical people.

The temple membership turned out to consist of an odd combination of the respectable and the marginal of society. There were teachers, law enforcement and military officers, nurses, bank tellers, and secretaries, alongside former prostitutes of both sexes and the odd ex-biker or two. There were two former Jesuits. One member turned out to be the principal of a Catholic school! She and her husband, a priest of the cult, had adopted several children.

Numerous Accusations of Molestation at Child Development Center at San Francisco's Presidio Army Base.

Joyce Tobin, the wife of a U.S. Army captain posted at the Presidio, stopped to pick up her three-year-old son at the base's preschool. Small child was mimicking masturbating, & told her Mr. Gary do it. He was examined, & it was determined he'd been violated. The CARSAC workers suggested that there might be multiple victims, but the army seemed not to want to believe this.

Other children soon began to speak out, the first among what would eventually include more than sixty. Their allegations were particularly startling because many hinted at satanic activity. Some children described being taken out of the day care center to private homes on the Presidio base, and to one home off-post, where they were sexually abused. Physicians discovered that several children had chlamydia and other STDs. Gary Hambright was charged, but three months after Hambright's arrest, the charges were dropped when U.S. District Court Judge William Schwarzer refused to allow the admission of "hearsay" statements made by the child to his mother, brother, and medical examiners.

Eventually, the parents would learn of other cases at other army bases, including West Point, Fort Dix, Fort Leavenworth, and Fort Jackson in South Carolina—a total of fifteen day care centers in all—as well as at two U.S. Air Force day care centers and at a facility run by the navy in Philadelphia. In one case, a three-year-old girl had' claimed that she'd been taken to the home of U.S. Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Michael Aquino and his wife, Lilith, and subjected to bizarre satanic ritual abuse. The attorney Cynthia Angell had a date to meet a potential witness and prep her for testimony and when she pulled into the parking lot two men jumped in her car held her at gunpoint, drove her to a place where they blindfolded her, & showed a her pics a tortured, dead bodies, & played a tape of sounds of children and adults screaming in pain. They told her to drop the case or else, & dropped her back off in a parking lot. Other attorneys were also harassed, & threatened.

Rudolph Giuliani, then United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, noted that "there were indications that some children may have been abused at the West Point Child Development Center," and recommended that the Point provide them with therapy. Eleven families filed a lawsuit.

Since the Second World War it has disguised itself in many guises–Rothschilds, Soros, Bildebergs, lizard people. One of the ur-texts of Jew hatred in the 21st century is David Duke's book “Jewish Supremacism,” which makes the claim that not only do Jews control the world, but that our religion teaches us to do so. Today, we're joined by Ben Siegel who has his master's in Religion, the Hebrew Bible, and Ancient Near Eastern Studies from the Claremont School of Theology. (Wow, that's a mouthful.) Welcome to The Nazi Lies Podcast, Ben. Ben Siegel: Thanks for having me Mike. I'm grateful for the opportunity to trash a Jew hater's biblical scholarship. Mike: [laughs] Very good. Okay, so before we get into Duke's book, let's talk a bit about how Judaism works, because it's very unlike Christianity. Can you give us a rundown of how Jewish law and Jewish morality works? Ben: Sure. I'll do my best. Now the Jewish legal system, known in Hebrew as halakha, is a comprehensive framework that informs the behaviors of religious, and also frequently secular, Jews. It takes as its starting point the written text, the Torah, the biblical books of Genesis through Deuteronomy, from which it derives 613 mitzvot, meaning laws or commandments, as authoritative God-given instruction on how to live an observant Jewish life. So from those texts, considered the written Torah, what's called the oral Torah is derived. This comprises successive centuries worth of interpretation of the written Torah by rabbis. The earliest of these is the Mishnah, which was compiled early in the second century of the common era, and the Gemara, rabbinical commentary on the Mishnah that was put together between the second and fifth centuries CE. These commentaries were collected to produce the Talmud. Now one in the Galilee region of Israel between 300 and 350 CE, known as the Jerusalem Talmud, and the second far more extensive Talmud compiled in Babylon in about 450 to 500 CE. This is the Babylonian Talmud. This is the one that people tend to cite most. It's really these long, extensive discourses weighing legal arguments on virtually every topic that was relevant to Jews during these periods, from personal and communal religious devotion to economic regulations to laws concerning marriage, dietary restrictions, relations with non-Jews; you name it. Now the Talmud is upheld to this day by most Jewish communities across the world as the basis for living an appropriate Jewish life in accordance with halakha and in accordance with God's will and vision for the world. Halakha informs Jewish ethics to a great deal as much as it undergirds legal and political concerns–a concern for ethical treatment of one's community and one's neighbors, stemming from the collective memory of slavery in Egypt, an ethics of solidarity, really, righteousness, compassion, and justice, in effect. Mike: Okay, so Duke takes aim at our self-description as the chosen people. This is commonly misinterpreted. What does it mean when the Jews say we are the chosen people? Ben: As the old saying goes, “How odd of God to choose the Jews.” So there's this notion that God selected the Israelites for a particular theological mission, to live according to His laws, and to be a light unto nations, inspiring other people through their example. But there's also this idea that the Jews chose God. That Abraham and his descendents embraced monotheism through a special and unique relationship with the deity. Chosenness in this sense isn't indicative of inherent ethnic or racial superiority, as Duke argues. I'd feel safe saying he's projecting his own white supremacist views onto the Jews here. Mike: You don't say. Ben: [laughs] Yeah, I do.  Mike: Okay, so another thing that David Duke derides is our holidays. Specifically, he describes Purim and Pesach as a celebration of the slaughter of gentiles, which I find absolutely laughable. Do you want to clear that one up? Ben: This would absolutely be hilarious if it weren't so malicious. Pesach celebrates the liberation of the Israelite people from slavery and oppression in Egypt. Recalling the ten plagues during the seder does recognize the suffering inflicted upon the Egyptians to make this happen. But this isn't a joyful moment. It's typically somber. The recitation of each plague is followed by dripping a drop of wine from our cups onto our plates to signify how we ourselves are diminished by the Egyptians' suffering. There's also a similarly warped misinterpretation of Purim going on here, where we celebrate the prevention of genocide against us. So in the Purim story, Haman had ordered the Jews put to death. The Megillah Esther makes it clear that the 70,000+ Persians killed at the end of the book are those sent by Haman to slaughter the Jews. And the Jews were only able to defend themselves because king Ahasuerus gives them permission to pick up swords. And to be frank, Mike, defense against genocide seems to a pretty legitimate cause for merrymaking.  Mike: Yeah, no, for sure. It's a really fun holiday if you've ever celebrated it, you know. It's a lot of dress up… I've heard it described as basically a combination of Halloween and New Years all wrapped into one. It's really fun.  Ben: Sure, if you like to drink and scream, Purim is the holiday for you. Mike: There you go. [laughs] Okay, so now let's get into the nitty gritty. So, David Duke cites a whole bunch of scriptures to make the Jews out to be haters of all things goyishe, or non-Jewish, with scriptural references that appear to justify unscrupulous behavior towards them. First of all, before we get into that, what does the word “goy” mean? Ben: Well it would be prudent to acknowledge that the term “goy” changes meaning slightly over time. In the biblical text, it means nation or people, not nation in the modern sense of Westphalian nation-states, but more as a homogenous ethnic identity. The Israelites were recognized as a goy here. Most notably, Exodus 19 where God promises Abraham that he will make his people “goy gadol,” a great people, Exodus 19:6. As we enter into the rabbinic period, where the Jews in the diaspora are negotiating Jewish identity as a minority population, goy predominantly takes on the meaning of non-Jew as a distinguishing marker. This interpretation of “goy” has persisted to this day, and is perhaps the most commonly recognized usage of the term. I have seen discussions among antisemites who misinterpret it as meaning “cattle,” based on connotations in Talmudic texts. But these texts offer a strict binary worldview where “Jew” is seen as akin to human, whereas non-Jews are aligned with animals. I think it's important to make the distinction that this framework is a legal one not necessarily a political one. Post exilic diaspora Jews did not have the kind of social power needed to foster political programs that affected the disenfranchisement of other groups typically associated with rhetorics of dehumanization.  Mike: Okay, so kind of on that point, Duke points to a number of decontextualized passages from Jewish scripture which describe gentiles in various negative ways: barbarians, animals, animal-fuckers. And I've got a few passages here which I've provided to you in advance. So there's Gemara Kiddushin 68a, Yebamoth (and correct me on any of these pronunciations) Yebamoth 98a, Baba Mezia 114a-b, Abodah Zarah 22a-b, and Baba Mezia 108b. Can you give us a little exegesis? Ben: I'd be happy to, but first I want to talk about how Duke sourced these texts. There's been some commentary on him plagiarizing Kevin McDonald who is an evolutionary psychologist working out of Cal State University-Long Beach. He uses the same arguments and the citations. But it also appears that Duke took many of the translations of these texts from a book by Elizabeth Dilling, who was a far-right political activist in the 1930s, noted antisemite, who went to Nazi Germany and spoke very highly of what she saw there. So with these translations that he's using, I think it's important that we take it with an enormous grain of salt, first of all. Mike: Right. Ben: But also the thing I've noticed most about non-Jews who rage against the Talmud is that they haven't read the damn thing. And frankly, I haven't read all of it either. It's an enormous body of text. And in that body of text there are, you know, rabbis disagreeing with each other. So one view may be held, and the exact opposite view is going to be upheld a line down. Just worth noting for when we're looking at these texts that are obviously cherry-picked. Mike: Right. Ben: The first one you mentioned, Kiddushin 68a, it's from a tractate that deals with rules pertaining to marriage and engagement laws. Now what Duke says about this is the Talmud denotes gentiles as animals. So here it's forbidding the betrothal of an Israelite to a Canaanite maidservant. One thing, there's no Canaanites in third century Persia at this time, so this is purely a hypothetical situation. But it's really this legal justification for not marrying non-Jews because of the potential for them to influence a Jew's worship in a negative way, so that they won't follow halakha. And there's definitely a discussion here of identifying them as like an animal, but it's not a similar dehumanization that we see in typical nazi rhetoric of like “Jews are cockroaches” or “Jews are vermin.” It's like, here is this category of thing that is not us, and we cannot mix with that. Does that make sense? Mike Yeah, I guess. Does the issue of her being a maidservant matter in a subordinate position to the person?  Ben: Some rabbis argue yes; some rabbis argue no. But really it's more that who she is, based on this identity, is making the betrothal ineffective. It's not considered valid. Mike: Okay, so like– Ben: Yeah. Mike: Go ahead. Ben: No, go right ahead. Mike: Okay, yeah continuing right along, let's go to Yebamoth 98a? Ben: Yeah, Yebamoth deals with rules of yibbum. This is what's commonly known as levarite marriage, where the brother of a man who died without children is permitted and encouraged to marry the widow. What Duke has this translated as is that all gentile children are animals. It doesn't say anything of the sort here. It's saying that the children of gentiles don't have a father. They don't have a patrilege. Like the offspring of a male gentile is considered no more related to him than the offspring of donkeys or horses. It's just a way of saying that the rabbis don't care who the kid's dad is. It's like, they couldn't be bothered. Mike: I see. Ben: They're not interested in the patrilege of non-Jews. They're really more concerned with Jewish family ties. Mike: Okay, so moving along, there's two passages from Baba Metzia, one is 114a-b and one is 108b. Ben: Mmhmm. Baba Metzia discusses civil matters. That is property, law of usury, other issues such as lost property and damages done to it. So the issue here is again, categorizing– Duke takes issue with the categorizing of goyim as non-human. And again, it comes down to the same thing. It's less that they are not recognized as human, and more that it is an issue of ritual purity because they don't adhere to the same religious standards. Therefore, they necessarily can't contaminate certain Jewish sacred spaces. Mike: That's probably– Ben: And– Mike: Go ahead. Ben: Yeah, sorry go ahead. Mike: I was gonna say, it's probably also worth noting that like many Jews, I would venture even to say most Jews, probably don't follow a lot of these laws. [laughs] Ben: Yeah, many of them aren't even aware of them. You know, you can spend your entire life studying these texts and maybe come across it once. You know, there are thousands of these tractates. Mike: And last in this category was Abodah Zarah 22a-b. Ben: Mmhmm. [laughs] This one's funny. Duke says gentiles prefer sex with cows. What the text is actually saying is that the animal of a Jew is more appealing to gentiles than their own wives. [laughs] So, I don't know if this intentionally, you know, throwing some shade gentiles and their own marriage relations, but it seems more in keeping with a concern that's held by the Talmudic sages of how do you ensure that an animal that you are sacrificing is ritually pure. That means it has no blemishes; it is handicapped in any way; but very importantly, that it has not had any sexual relations with anybody. So Abodah Zarah, literally meaning “foreign worship” or “strange service,” it deals with how to live with people who don't adhere to the same religious convictions. And the concern of beastiality is kind of a big, overarching theme in this text to the point that there are many discussions of concern about whether or not you can purchase a sacrificial animal from a goy. Some rabbis say no; some say yes. Interestingly enough, there is one narrative in the text, where a goy named Dama– The rabbis go to him, and purchase a red heifer which is like a really big omen in the bible. It's like huge. That's like primo sacrifice. And he is upheld as a righteous goy and as someone who would never shtup his cow. So what's really interesting here is that you've got these two different voices in the text that are both preserved as authoritative. One, there is the concern that the goy will engage in beastiality. The other is this one goy Dama who is upheld as an example of righteousness in regards to being able to buy, you know, a sacrificial animal for him. Of course, Duke isn't going to look at this text because it doesn't serve his overall purpose as vilifying the Jewish people as anti-goy. Mike: And before we continue, I want to inform our listeners that shtup is a Yiddish word for “having sex with.” Ben: Yeah, literally it means “push,” but yeah, it means sex. Mike: Alright so, Duke also makes the claim that there are different laws that Jews follow when it comes to dealing with the goyim. So he specifically points to Gittin 57a, Abadoh Zarah 67b, Sanhendrin 52b, Sanhedrin 105a-b and 106a-b. Can you explain what's going on in those passages? Ben: Sure, so my understanding of his gripe with Gittin 57a is what is the punishment for Jesus in the next world, saying that he will be boiled in excrement. He's going to be punished in boiling poop, and that anyone who mocks the word of the sages will be sentenced to boiling excrement. This was his sin, as he mocked the words of the sages. And the Gemara comments come and see the difference between these sinners of Israel and the prophets of the nations of the world as Balaam, who was a prophet, wished Israel harm whereas Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Jewish sinner, sought their wellbeing. So there is this, kind of– There's some antagonism towards Jesus in the text because of its function as– Jesus's function and Christianity's function as a counter-claim to the inheritance of Abraham and of Isaac and Jacob. So there's some theological competition going on here. Mike: And what about Abodah Zarah 67b? Ben: Mmhmm. “The halakha from the case of gentiles that require purging. Vessels that gentiles used for cooking that the Torah requires that one purge through fire and ritually purify before they may be used by Jews.” You know, he seems to be indicating that– Duke seems to be indicating that the text is saying that goyim are dirty. But this isn't an argument for, like, hygienic cleaning. The ancient Israelites and Talmudic sages didn't have a germ theory of disease. What they're talking about is purifying these vessels for religious purposes, specifically. They have to be rededicated for their sacred use because they may have come in contact with forbidden food, with non-kosher food. Mike: Right, so this is about the laws of kashrut, right? Ben: Yeah, precisely. And again this is Abodah Zarah which is all about how do we do our religion properly with all of these other influences around us. Mike: Right, okay so Sanhendrin 52b. Ben: Yeah, this is another Jesus one. So Duke says that the person being punished in this text is Jesus, and he sees this as an anti-Jesus text. But the text doesn't mention Jesus whatsoever. It's a general rule for capital punishment by strangulation which is outlined in Leviticus. So this is one of your big nazi lies. He doesn't mention– They don't mention Jesus here. Mike: Is this one of the ones where he mentions Balaam or something? Ben: I believe so. Mike: Okay, can you talk about who Balaam is, because Duke misidentifies him as Jesus. Ben: Yeah he does that a lot. So in the book of Numbers, Balaam is a prophetic figure, identified in the text as a false prophet, who goes to send a curse against the Israelite people, and he is himself cursed for it and put to death. So he's kind of like this figure of those who would seek the destruction the Jewish people. He's a big bad. Mike: Right, and since he's in the book of Numbers which is the Torah, right? Ben: Yeah. Mike: Yeah, I mean, that would mean that this is, like, well before Jesus's time, right? Ben: Absolutely. Mike: Like there's no way this would have been Jesus. Ben: For sure. Granted, there are certain Christian interpreters of the text who see Hebrew bible references to Jesus throughout. Mike: Right. Ben: So they kind of see Jesus as foreshadowed in so much. Mike: Alright so, moving on, Sanhendrin 105a-b? Ben: So this one's interesting because it says that Balaam was a diviner by using his penis. [both laugh] And he's one who engaged in beastiality with his donkey. So what Duke takes to be a condemnation of Jesus, because he's misidentified Jesus with Balaam, is really kind of like textbook Talmudic condemnation of a big bad goy. Now here's a guy who sought the destruction of the Jewish people. In the book of Numbers he's got this talking donkey who prevents him– who tries to stop him from going forward with his mission. And we know that he was bad because, according to the Talmud, he had sex with his donkey. There's this major preoccupation with bestiality in the Talmud, and it is weird as hell. But it's there, and we've got to deal with it. [laughs] Mike: Okay, and Sanhendrin 106a-b. Ben: Again, this one's not about Jesus, but rather about Balaam who has been misidentified with Jesus. I think this is– this kind of misidentification is just indicative of Duke not doing his homework. My understanding is that he took these from Dilling, and he never fact-checked to see if, you know, this is what the text says or this is what the text identifies. You know, this is bad scholarship on his part which is probably to be expected from this guy who defrauded his own his own white supremacist organization and has a fake degree. Mike: Right, and he even says in the book that he's not doing anything original, that it's just collected from other sources. Ben: Right. Mike: Well, since we're on the subject of Jesus, we may as well go with the rest of the passages that I have here. So Sanhendrin 90a. I'm kind of skipping around here. Ben: Yeah this one's all about prohibition against idol worship. And you said this one is Jesus-related? Mike: That's what he said, yeah. About Christianity and Jesus, yeah. Ben: I don't find much to do with Jesus in this text. Jesus isn't mentioned in this one. It's primarily about idol worship and people who prophesize with regards to it. Maybe he's trying to say that, like, the preoccupation with idol worship is a condemnation of Christianity, but I'm just not seeing where he's getting Jesus out of this. Mike: Okay then, on that same subject Shabbat 116a. Ben: Yeah, holy books in Babylonian temples. Now is this the one where he says a goy can't read the text? Mike: It might be, yeah. Or a Christian can't read the text. Ben: Yeah, oh no, this is a really particular one. Again this one is just– There's a lot of rhetorical violence against those who do the religion improperly or don't treat the sacred texts as they should. You know, these are practices and artifacts that are very important to the Jewish people, so they hold them in very high regard. Mike: So I guess moving along, Duke refers to a number of passages in the Bible that he takes to mean that Jews are preoccupied with racial integrity. (Projection much?) He points specifically to Sanhendrin 59a, Deuteronomy 7:2-6, Ezra 9:1-2 and 9:12, Leviticus 20:24, and Nehemiah 13:3. So what do these passages say and what do they actually mean? Ben: With Sanhedrin 59a, which Sanhedrin primarily deals with criminal law, it says that “A gentile who engages in Torah study is liable to receive the death penalty. As it is stated: ‘Moses commanded us a law, an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.'” This is from Deuteronomy 33:4. “Indicating that it is an inheritance for us, and not for them.” So there is one sage, a rabbi Yokhanon who is arguing that goyim who study Torah, you know, they're liable to be put to death. You know, they expose themselves to capital punishment. He's arguing this because they view the Torah with such high esteem; it is their most sacred text. They want to preserve it. Now this text is followed a line or two down by a counterargument. It says, “You have therefore learned that even a gentile who engages Torah study is considered like a high priest.” So you've got one argument saying that a goy who studies Torah is liable to be put to death, and another that says that they have an incredible status, that studying Torah gives them very high regard. But this again is one of those instances where Duke does not consider that might undermine his central thesis that Jews are bad, are always bad, and will always be bad. Mike: Okay, so what about the Deuteronomy passages? Ben: Deuteronomy is fascinating. We could do a whole discussion of that book in and of itself because it is–Deuteronomy in Greek means “second law”–but it is kind of a later law code that is arguably the result of a very kind of reactionary sect of Israelite theology that does not see coexistence with people who don't worship YHWH as possible. And rhetorically, what they are saying is when the Israelites get to the promised land, they are to commit genocide against the peoples of the land. Don't intermarry with them because that could lead to apostasy, that could lead to illicit worship. You know, their daughters will lead you to serve other gods. The sense here is that Israel is a holy people, God has chosen them to be special unto him, and if they allow this foreign influence to affect them, that will be undermined. Mike: Okay, and what about the Ezra text? Ezra 9:1-2 and 9:12. Ben: Yeah, there's some scholarship to indicate that Ezra and Nehemiah represent one scholarly tradition. So after the Babylonian empire was defeated by the Persian empire, the Persians allowed the community of Israelites that had been taken into exile, the golah community, to return to the land, to rebuild the temple, and to reestablish rule. So one of the concerns of the returning community is this very specific idea that the reason they were exiled in the first place is because God is punishing them for worshipping other gods. And that sense also undergirds the theology of the book of Deuteronomy. So their solution is that, to prevent that from ever happening again, they have to divorce from the non-Israelite wives that they had married that might lead them into temptation. Now this is the view of the returning community, not the community that had stayed in the land of Israel during that time. So these would have been the intelligentsia, the priestly class, the aristocracy, skilled laborers, so it's not a normative view, but it kind of becomes normative because it becomes the dominant voice of the text, if that makes any sense. But they are saying that for the sake not just of religious purity but also to establish power for themselves, you know, the returning community has a claim to power in the land, not just because they have, you know, they have a connection to it where they are before the exile, but they are supported by the Persian imperial power. They're making this new claim of identity and religiosity to assert that power. Mike: Okay and what about Leviticus 20:24? Ben: “You shall inherit their land” (“Them” being the Canaanites.) “that I will give unto you to possess it, a land that flows with milk and honey. I am the Lord your God that separated you from other people.” So this is God telling the Israelites that they will be given the promised land because God has chosen them, has separated them. The word “kodesh,” to be holy, also means separate. So it's really a theological category, not an ethnic one. You know, the Israelites are separate from these people and are given the land because of their adherence to the covenant at Sinai, not because they are of a particular ethnic or racial background. Mike: Okay, so we talked a little bit about kind of the somewhat genocidal tendencies I guess. And so David Duke talks about massacres perpetrated by Jews in the bible. He points to Deuteronomy 20:10-18, Isaiah 34:2-3. and Joshua 6:21 and 10:28-41. And when I mentioned Joshua to you, you kind of rolled your eyes at it. Ben: Yeah. Mike: So I guess let's start with Joshua then. Ben: Yeah, I do. Good. Joshua's a fascinating text. Scholars pretty much agree that it has no, or little to no, basis in historical fact. You know, one of these is that, these texts Joshua 6:21, is the destruction of the city of Jericho which according to archeological records happened several hundred years prior to when this narrative is supposed to have taken place. But what's being discussed here in 21 is the devotion of the city to the Lord, the destruction of every living thing in it. So, you know, this is absolutely a genocidal text. It's a purification of the land by the sword and by flame. So typically in war in the ancient near east, you could take slaves, you could take cattle as war booty. But what is being done here is the destruction of all of that, saying that everything belongs to God, and as such it must be destroyed and sacrificed unto him. But it's also seen as a kind of justice because here are these, for lack of a better word, pagans who stand in the way of the Israelite mission, and who may also tempt the Israelites to turn away from the path of God. So it's absolutely this violent, theologically motivated holy war, genocidal slaughter, maintained in the text. And I do think it's important to wrestle with these notions. You know, whether or not it actually happened, it's still– It's there, and it informs a great deal of thinking. It informed the colonization of the New World, whereby settlers from Europe saw themselves as Israelites and the indigenous people here as Canaanites. Robert Allen Warrior is an indigenous scholar who's done a lot of work on this. But then, the Joshua narrative also informed many of the early Zionists, and they saw themselves as, as Rachel Haverlock called the Joshua generation. Like, Ben Gurion assembled a number of different people to do bible studies on the book of Joshua. It is a text of settler colonialism and can be used to justify that kind of political programme. Mike: Okay so back to Deutero– Ben: If that's what you're trying to do, Joshua is a good place to pull from. Mike: Okay so back to Deuteronomy, 20:10-18. What's being said in there? Ben: “When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open its gates, all the people shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage in battle, lay siege to the city.” And the ban, or kherem, is in effect there. So destroy, destroy, destroy, and leave nothing because everything is for God. It's the same scenario– In this instance, the people in the land are given the opportunity to surrender, otherwise they are subject to the sword. It's very similar to the kind of warfare described in other texts from the ancient near east, whether they're Assyrian or Babylonian. So it's not uncommon to see this kind of siege warfare described, and it's not necessarily unique to the Israelite people. Mike: Right, I mean, yeah, I mean that was one of the things that happened to the Israelite people, at least in engaging the Romans, right? Ben: Yeah, precisely. Mike: Okay, what about Isaiah 34:2-3? Ben: This one's interesting because it's not actually a narrative of slaughter. It's a prophetic oracle delivered against the people of Edom, the Edomites, for betraying the Israelites to the Babylonians and assisting in their imperial endeavors. It's saying that, you know, you will be destroyed. You know, the corpses of your people will lay in the street. So it's not an actual thing that happened. It's part of a type of prophetic literature called oracles against the nations where the prophet of a particular book will condemn a specific people on God's behalf. Keep in mind that the prophets aren't really seen as their own agents. They're the agents of God; they speak God's word. So God through Isaiah is saying, here's what's going to happen to you because of your betrayal. Mike:  Okay, so this next part is probably going to need a trigger warning or something. So there's some really strange passages that he cites about rape and virginity that I honestly haven't looked at because by the time I got to these passages I was just tired of him being wrong every time I checked the passages he cited. So he cites Kethuboth 11b, Sanhedrin 55b and 69a-b, Yebamoth 57b, 58a, and 60b. So let's start with Kethuboth. Ben: Right, yeah, so here he's– The issue is Bath Sheeba, when she gave birth to Solomon, whether or not she was six years old, or whether or not she was an earlier age. It's not saying that six-year-olds are appropriate– or that six is an appropriate age for sexual relations with a girl. It's arguing at what age a child can conceive. Like when is conception possible? And it's saying that because Bath Sheeba gave birth to Solomon when she was six, it's somewhere around that time. Yeah, this whole discourse is really gnarly.  Mike: Okay, so what about Sanhendrin 55b? Ben: So here it's about a girl who is three years and one day whose father has arranged for her to be married, and betrothal is through intercourse. It's concerning the legal status of the intercourse with her, if it's like full-fledged sex. Really here the text is examining forbidden sexual acts that cause ritual impurity and calamity. And prior to this specific quotation is a broader context of unwitting beastiality, like beastiality that you didn't know you did. It's not justifying sex with minors; it says that the act renders the man ritually impure and liable to be put to death. Lucky for the child, I guess lucky, is that they're exempt from execution because they're a minor. Small condolence I guess. Mike: Okay so it's basically saying the opposite of what David Duke said. Ben: Yeah. Mike: Okay, what about 69a-b? Ben: I mean, this is probably a discussion of the legal ramifications of this act. Mike: Yeah this is actually, this says exactly what you were talking about earlier. So “A maiden aged three years and a day may be acquired in marriage by coition, and if her deceased husband's brother cohabitated with her, she becomes his.” Blah blah blah. Ben: Yeah, because it's Yebamoth– It's Yebamoth, right? Mike: No this is Sanhendrin. Ben: Oh Sanhendrin. So this is, yeah, criminal law. So this is the liability of criminal punishment, but also these rabbis debated everything. What is the likelihood that a three-year-old is going to be married to someone who then dies and then has to be– Again they have the option to be married to their brother so that the dead brother's lineage doesn't end. They're really negotiating, like, every possible eventuality that might happen just in case. You know, all of these are hypothetical situations. And, you know, they're gross. Some of them are just really fucked up. Mike: [laughs] Yeah Jews like to talk about a lot of weird hypotheticals. Alright so now onto the Yebamoth one. So 57b. Ben: Yeah, Yebamoth 57b. This one I've got, “A maiden aged three years and a day may be acquired by marriage in coition.” So yeah, the sex act is technically allowed. It's not condoning it. But because three-year-old girls cannot become pregnant, it's still technically forbidden because it's a waste of seed in non-procreative sex. So it's saying that she can't conceive via sexual intercourse, so it's really forbidden because sex in this worldview is not for pleasure; it's purely for procreation. So if you are wasting sperm engaging in this sex act, it's a bad thing. Not going to lie, this one's fucked up. Mike: Yeah, what about 58a? Ben: Um, doesn't say anything about minors. Mike: Really? Ben: Just, yeah, I didn't see anything about minors in this one. Mike: What about rape? Ben: Most likely. Let me just take a closer look. Mike: Or virginity or something? Ben: Yeah, do you have a quote on this one? Mike: Not sure. I mean, I don't have quotes on any of these because again I stopped looking at them. Ben: Yeah, and a lot of it is just like– It's kind of he said, she said. I don't know. I don't take David Duke's reading of these in good faith, and I don't think we can. Mike: This is a weird passage. There's something about “Through betrothal alone a woman is not entitled to eat.” This is so strange. Ben: I mean I would lie if I said that I understood the majority of Talmudic literature. Mike: Right. Ben: You know, people can spend seven years reading this entire work all the way through. The law of tamurah. Mike: Yeah, and, I mean, even– David Duke doesn't even necessarily quote these passages. He just references them. And I guess, like you said, he probably pulls them from other sources without reading them. Ben: Yeah, I– With this, I can't even tell, like, what he's arguing. Like, what is the– What issue is he taking here? Mike: Yeah, I would suggest that our listeners read this passage and try to figure out what the fuck David Duke has a problem with. Ben: Yeah exactly. Yeah [sarcastically] read David Duke's book. You'll have fun. Mike: Yeah, no don't read David Duke's book, but you can read the Talmud, that's pretty good. Ben: Spend seven years reading the whole thing. You can do it, a daf a day. Mike: Alright, do you have any notes on Yebamoth 60b? Ben: So this is where the Gemara cites another ruling related to who is considered a virgin. And it's not condoning sex with a three-year-old. It says that in the event of that happening, she remains a virgin because her hymen grows back. Like if it's through a sex act with an adult man or if her hymen is ruptured by wood. You know, she's still considered a virgin because it grows back. I don't know if that's medically true. Mike: Yeah, I was– Ben: Sounds like bullshit, but the issue here is virginity as it relates to being able to determine paternity in the long run. Mike: Okay, alright, so Judaism has changed a lot since these texts were written. So what can we say about the ethos of Judaism now as it relates to these texts? Ben: Right, obviously most Jews aren't concerned with the majority of the issues we've addressed here today. You know, they don't spend a lot of time thinking about beastiality, thank goodness. But I think if there is a single Jewish ethos, it's an affirmation of being the people of Israel, literally meaning “to wrestle with God,” Yis-ra-el. Engagement in argument over Torah are so central to our people's identity that even secular atheist Jews still contend with these issues. So as many different types of Jews as there are and how many different ways they approach the text, there still profoundly, proudly participating in a longstanding tradition that's engaging with and arguing with the tradition. I think that's the modern Jewish ethos, and it's much the same as the ancient but adapted to the current context: How do we live a good life?  Mike: Word, well Ben Siegel, thank you so much for coming on The Nazi Lies Podcast and taking the time to do the tedious work of debunking David fucking Duke. He has warned that Chinese students attending U.S. colleges and universities have become the long arm of Chinese totalitarianism, that students, professors, and scientists have become “nontraditional collectors” of intelligence for China, and has stated that China's influence on activities on American campuses have infringed on academic freedom, violated sovereignty, and have violated U.S. laws. Further, Chang has claimed that China is not trying to compete with the United States within the Westphalian order, but to overthrow that order altogether.U.S.-China “cold tech war”In his book, The Great U.S.-China Tech War (2020), Chang submits that China and the United States are involved in a what he terms as a “cold tech war,” with the winner being able to dominate the twenty-first century. He notes that a decade ago China was not considered a tech contender, but Chinese leaders have made their regime a tech powerhouse, with some now finding China to be a leader with America behind in critical areas. In a separate interview, he remarked that China achieved its 149.2 percent of its current trade surplus with the United States through "lying, cheating, and stealing" and that if China decided to realize its threat that had been expressed since August 2007 to sell its US Treasuries, it would actually hurt its own economy which is reliant on exports to the United States; the economy of the United States would be hurt by a sell-off of Treasuries, causing the United States to buy less from China, which would in turn hurt the Chinese economy.Since 2001, Chang has made predictions that the Chinese government will eventually collapse. 1/ Today I want to talk about an idea I’ve been developing, which is that the future of the business world, post-Covid, and post software eating the world, looks surprisingly like the High Middle Ages, between about 1000 to 1250 AD, rather than like any more recent historical era. Which of course leads to the question, how do you operate in this world?2/ I also want to talk a little bit about the first ten decade of my life as an independent consultant, what I’m looking forward to in the next decade, and in that vein, I want to talk about a new initiative I helped start last month, called the Yak Collective.3/ Next year, in February, I will have completed 10 years as an independent consultant, 10 years since my first client in 2011. I’ve probably had like 50-60 clients since then. So at a personal level, I was already in a mood to pivot to a different mode coming out of my 9-month fellowship with the Berggruen Institute, which gave me a chance to cut back on the consulting work, take a step back, and think about my journey so far, and where I want to go to from here. 4/ This planned pivot has coincided with Covid19, which has radically accelerated a trend that has been a big part of my career — software eating the world. Almost all the consulting I’ve done is, in one way or another, about software eating the world. Software eating the world is going through an inflection point I thought wouldn’t arrive till 2030. The pandemic has accelerated the schedule by 10 years.5/ Previously, it was the margin to the industrial center, now the industrial world is the margin and the software world is the center. I don’t know about you, but I’m betting that this recovery will lead us to a world with software at the center sort of permanently, dominating not just the economy, but every aspect of our adapted way of life.6/ But… there’s something bigger going on here. I’ve been reading a lot of history, and I’ve concluded that it isn’t just the 20 year old software-eating-the-world trend that is accelerating and going through an inflection point. There are several other much longer cycles that are going through similar inflection points. We are experiencing a sort of resonance peak in several cycles which happen to coincide in phase right now.7/ For example, a 100 year culture of industrial synchronized clock-based time is shifting to post-industrial multi-temporality, based on subjective event-stream-based time. This is what I’ve been researching for the last year, and writing a book about, called the Clockless Clock, which I am serializing on this newsletter..8/ Then there is a 400-year old cycle of Westphalian nation states that seems to be swinging towards some sort of city-state and regional coalitional world, thanks to how and where the battle against Covid19 is actually being fought.9/ And going still further back, to before the Black Death, which I am reading about in a great book called A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman, I think an 800-year-old cycle of centralization is reversing and giving way to a kind of decentralized, horizontally organized world last seen in the High Middle Ages, when the feudal nobility was more powerful than the monarchy, the Church in Europe had unquestioned authority, and imperial states were weak.10/ Now if you’ve studied your history, you probably know that the Black Death, along with other factors like the rise of firearms, drove the world towards Great Powers and centralization, and weakened the feudal, manorial economy of barons and knights. I think Covid19 will drive us the other way, towards local and regional powers and decentralization. This is not an original thought. A lot of people have been saying that.11/ The part that interests me is the implications of this huge multi-cycle inflection point for organizations and management. Assumptions shifting now are older than the oldest modern businesses. They are older than even mercantilism, which was based on the Age of Sail, and emerged in the 15th century, after the Black Death had destroyed the manorial economy. 12/ If you want to think about organizations and management in the next decade, you have to go back far, really far, to before there were modern public or private sectors, or chartered corporations. To a time when the economy meant a manorial economy, and globalization meant Templar knights going on crusades. To a time when honor-based politics was on top and economics was strongly subservient to it.13/ Of course, the structural roles are played by different elements, and you can’t get too literal about this. You have a world awash in public debt, and likely, a wave of nationalization of large parts of the global business world. Instead of the church, you have the global liberal order. 14/ But the point of the loose historical analogy is that you can no longer rely on assumptions about business and corporations based on the last 50, 100, or even 400 years. The internet has been fundamentally undermining assumptions that were laid down as far back as 1000 AD. And Covid19 is accelerating the process of collapsing things built on those assumptions15/ If you want to rethink the nature of organizations, business, and the economy today, you have to rethink ideas going back as far back as the 13th century from first principles. This is something I’m doing in one of my other projects, the Great Weirding, but that’s at the level of essay writing. This is a kind of thinking I want to bring into my consulting work as well.16/ So to bring it back down to that, I’ve learned a lot in the last decades, and I think I’ve done more good than harm. There are even times I’ve felt like I added more value to a client in an hour than an entire McKinsey team in a year. This is not me bragging about my personal abilities, but a comment on just how much fresh intelligence there is to be mined from internet-first perspective, from a software-eating-the-world lens.17/ For example, just this morning, I was leading a study group on online community governance, and we were reading a section of The Tao of the IETF, which is a seminal document in internet governance, and it suddenly struck me that governing and managing online communities, which is something I’ve been doing for over 20 years now, is actually a much harder problem than governing organizations. 18/ And much of the reason I am able to add a weirdly leveraged kind of value as an independent consultant is due to the fact that my primary home is on the internet. Even my main consulting methodology, which I call “sparring” is a skill I think I’ve honed more through 20 years of online discussions and flame wars, than through traditional business meetings.19/ So here’s a weird way of looking at it: because the internet was something of a blank canvas in the 80s, and because the people creating its culture were not typical organization man types, they basically made up a playbook that seemed to work as they went along. And as it happens, a lot of the methods they discovered through trial and error look more like the culture of the 1300s than classic management texts from the 1970s. 20/ It’s not that Peter Drucker or Michael Porter are wrong; they were just working within organizational frameworks and mental models that are much younger, between 20 to 200 years old. And as it turns out, those frameworks and mental models are not as robust as we like to think. In fact, they’re pretty fragile, and are collapsing around us as we speak.21/ I’m not the only one making this argument. There was a very interesting book by Matthew Fraser, that came out in 2008. It was called Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom, and it argued exactly what I am arguing — that in a world where Facebook shapes reality, you can learn more from the history of Templar knights than you can from the biography of Jack Welch.22/ There are toxic aspects of this of course. I’ve written elsewhere about the Internet of Beefs, which is about the toxic world of culture wars. If you squint a bit, it resembles the culture of jousting and tournaments in the middle ages. But other aspects are much more positive. Good internet communities seem to have some of the features of good manorial economies for example. They have a whole-life sort of quality to them, instead of an artificial separation of work and life.23/ Which brings me to the something I want to put the spotlight on. As many of you know, I write another newsletter called the Art of Gig, which is about independent consulting, contractors, and the gig economy. About a month ago, we spun up a sort of open-source initiative with the idea of discovering more internet-native ways of developing and delivering consulting services. 24/ The group, which we call the Yak Collective, just launched publicly last week, and released its first report, called Don’t Waste the Reboot. It’s a collection of ideas about how organizations can emerge from Covid19 in a way that makes the next normal better than the last one. We’re going to be producing a lot more like that in the coming months, and you can keep up by following our work on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.25/ But what I want to highlight is not the content so much as the method by which we are trying to generate it. With the Yak Collective, we are trying to practice what I am preaching here, which is to take a really long, historical view of organizations and management going back to the 13th century, combining that with what we’ve learned from 30 years of online, internet culture, and working in new ways.26/ If you want to support us, you can do a couple of things. Among other things, I want to try and distill some of the management and business knowledge I think I’ve learned in the last decade into teaching and writing output that others can use, and also by doing that, maybe level up myself to different challenges myself. 28/ As one piece of that, next week, I’ll be conducting my first workshop on my conversational sparring model of consulting for a few others in the Yak Collective interested in learning it. I am hoping to do more such things, and make it a new part of my consulting life. But in the meantime, of course, I have to continue my own consulting practice. Lecture Three: Authoritarian International Law? In the final lecture, I ask what international law will look like if current trends continue. In an era dominated by authoritarian and not democratic regimes, what role will international law play? To be sure, we do not want to blindly project forward from current trends, and it is possible that democratic systems will prove resilient. But the rise of authoritarian China, with its own increasingly resilient legal system, along with a newly assertive Russian regime, suggests that the question of authoritarian international law is worth exploring. This inquiry involves examining the international mechanisms established and utilized by these states. As I shall argue, the role of international law in a world dominated by authoritarian regimes will in some ways resemble its role in the earlier Westphalian era. The Hersch Lauterpacht Memorial Lecture is an annual three-part lecture series given in Cambridge to commemorate the unique contribution to the development of international law of Sir Hersch Lauterpacht. In August of 1971, the oligarchy succeeded in finally destroying the Bretton Woods monetary system, created by Franklin Roosevelt, bastardized by Harry Truman, but nonetheless a basis for stable trade between nation states. What came in its wake was the free trade system favored by the City of London, in which price has no relation to the actual cost of production. Rather, as Milton Friedman argued, price theory evolves from the black market or the drug market it is whatever monetary price the "invisible hand" of the City of London banking apparatus can extract. Commodities can then be "valued" by manipulation of popular opinion and culture rather than their role in advancing and sustaining life. As the world explores returning to the type of full set economies advocated by LaRouche, it is now time to create a stable basis for trade in which terms of trade are set on the basis of LaRouche's measures for potential relative population density the clear implication of a Westphalian model for international relations. Making LaRouche's third and fourth laws the premise of any new system now will allow the U.S. and the world to survive the transition from the now bankrupt City of London/Wall Street system to a new economic platform of constant progressive change to higher orders of activity. Until the mid-19th century, China occupied the premier place in East Asia’s political order. Exercising cultural and political hegemony through a set of tributary relationships with its neighbors, China’s imperial bureaucrats developed a conception of rule different from the Westphalian idea of individual nation states. After more than a century of political turmoil, China is once again asserting itself on the global stage, and many observers have interpreted China’s present ambitions as an attempt to restore its former glory. Combining journalistic and historical research methods, Howard French delves into the link between contemporary China and its imperial past in his new book. Howard French is a former New York Times reporter, and an expert on China. In Everything Under the Heavens, he examines how China’s leaders understand their own history, and analyzes the ideological, philosophical, and legal implications of this intellectual heritage. He also explains what this means for U.S.-China relations going forward. Mr. French joined the National Committee in New York City on May 2 to discuss his book and strategies for engaging a resurgent China with Senior Director for Education Programs Margot Landman. Modern international relations are a direct result of a series of Treaties ratified in Westphalia during the 17th century. The “Westphalian Peace” enshrined the rights of states to claim sovereignty over their domestic affairs and territories -- and thus promoted the fundamental principle that all states, no matter how weak or powerful, are equal in international law. The advent of the West has made these Westphalian principles the global norm of international affairs; and Asia is no exception. What is often forgotten, however, is that Asia before the arrival of the Western powers was under a fundamentally different system -- in effect a hierarchical order in which China held the highest status. Thanks to its might and advanced Confucian culture China was at the center of a system where there could be no equality among nations; yet where emulation and cooperation were possible, trade thrived and, importantly, stability could be found. This is the argument of Professor David C. Kang, who kindly agreed to be our guest for this episode. Together, we look back into the ancient regional order of premodern Asia and explore whether the history of Asian international relations can inform us as to the present state of affairs in the region -- and maybe even help us make sense of China’s rise. David C. Kang is Professor of International Relations and Business at the University of Southern California, with appointments in both the School of International Relations and the Marshall School of Business. He is also director of the Korean Studies Institute and the East Asian Studies Center. Professor Kang’s latest book is East Asia Before the West: Five Centuries of Trade and Tribute (Columbia University Press, 2010). He is also author of China Rising: Peace, Power, and Order in East Asia (Columbia University Press, 2007); Crony Capitalism: Corruption and Development in South Korea and the Philippines (Cambridge University Press, 2002); and Nuclear North Korea: A Debate on Engagement Strategies (Columbia University Press, 2003), co-authored with Victor Cha. Professor Kang has published numerous articles in top academic journals, and his co-authored article Testing Balance of Power Theory in World History was awarded “Best article, 2007-2009” by the European Journal of International Relations. David Kang has also written opinion pieces in the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. He received an A.B. with honors from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from Berkeley.
