President Donald Trump's second term has swung a wrecking ball at diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and programs throughout the country. Few writers seem better suited to explain this unique moment in America than Nikole Hannah-Jones.A New York Times journalist and Howard University professor, Hannah-Jones has spent years studying and shaping compelling—and at times controversial—narratives about American history. In 2019, she created The 1619 Project, a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of stories and essays that placed the first slave ship that arrived in Virginia at the center of the US' origin story. Today, the Trump administration is pushing against that kind of historical reframing while dismantling federal policies designed to address structural racism. Hannah-Jones says she's been stunned by the speed of Trump's first few months.“We haven't seen the federal government weaponized against civil rights in this way” since the turn of the century, Hannah-Jones says. “We've not lived in this America before. And we are experiencing something that, if you study history, it's not unpredictable, yet it's still shocking that we're here.”On this week's episode of More To The Story, host Al Letson talks to Hannah-Jones about the rollback of DEI and civil rights programs across the country, the ongoing battle to reframe American history, and whether this will lead to another moment of rebirth for Black Americans.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Interim executive producers: Brett Myers and Taki Telonidis | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Read: Trump Shuts Down Diversity Programs Across Government (Mother Jones)Listen: 40 Acres and a Lie (Reveal)Read: The 1619 Project (The New York Times Magazine) Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

According to the World Health Organization, of the estimated 80 million people in need a wheelchair, only 5–35% have access to one. In low-income countries, as few as 3% of people have access to the assistive products they need. That's why each year, dedicated Joni and Friends volunteers collect thousands of used manual wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. Donated wheelchairs are restored to like-new condition by inmates in prison-based restoration centers located across the United States. This restoration process offers inmates the opportunity to make a difference for others and experience redemptive purpose in their own lives. Each recipient receives a custom-fit wheelchair and hears the Gospel message. Recipients also receive a Bible in their language, get training in wheelchair use and upkeep, and have the opportunity to connect with a local Christ-honoring church. Last week, several local churches, in partnership with Joni and Friends, served as local donation centers for used wheel chairs, bringing the hope of the Gospel to those with mobility needs! https://joniandfriends.org/florida/ https://www.mybayside.church/campuses/lakewood-ranch-campus See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Can you say SHOOK!” she tweeted. 76% OFF!!! Kwanzaa Bundle Pack Sale! Jen welcomes creator of The 1619 Project Nicole Hannah-Jones to illuminate how she has used the Black experience to revolutionize our understanding of our history across multiple mediums. While explaining her process, they discuss the power of the personal story to connect to the past, how The 1619 Project uses the collective to take back control of our past from elites and those in power. They also lay out how our country's continuum of systemic injustice divides us, undermines our democracy, and stops us from reaching true equality. To fight back, they share the successes of the Black press, rebuke both-sidesism and the tendency to defer to power, and call for the courage to tell the truth. Mark offers context on the project's historical focus and clarifies its implications. Shifting gears, he delves into the political engagement of Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian immigrant running for president. The canceled fundraiser incident highlights the challenges candidates face in a politically charged climate. In 1923, Scholastic founder and CEO Maurice R. Robinson deemed that artistic students should be celebrated every bit as much as their athletic peers. Robinson created the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to recognize talented young artists and writers from across the United States. The program gained fame through the students who won its awards, many of whom went onto groundbreaking careers in art, fashion, film, and literature. They include Bernard Malamud, Ezra Jack Keats, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Cy Twombly, Kay WalkingStick, Robert Redford, Stephen King, Ken Burns, Yolanda Wisher, Zac Posen, Lena Dunham, and Amanda Gorman. A century after Robinson laid out his vision, the program is still going strong. The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, which administers the program, recently published A Thousand Familiar Faces: 100 Years of Teen Voices. The new anthology offers a look at life through young people's eyes, whether they're grappling with World War I, the Great Depression, the Vietnam War, or the September 11 attacks. You'll find memoirs, poems, and essays about teenage life, family, identity, grief, racism, and immigration. In this episode, Hannah Jones, Deimosa Webber-Bey, and Henry Trinder join host Suzanne McCabe to talk about A Thousand Familiar Faces. Hannah, who edited the anthology, is also an author. She won a Scholastic Award, herself, in 2004. Deimosa and Henry combed through the Scholastic archives to find the best of the best of student writing from the past 100 years. Deimosa is the director of Information Services & Cultural Insight at Scholastic, and Henry recently earned a master's degree in library science from Pratt Institute. → Resources A Thousand Familiar Faces: A new anthology of award-winning teen writing features works dating back to the 1920s. As that went on, short stories became more popular, and now, it seems, essays have become much more popular.” “It was comforting to read these stories and see myself in them.” Deimosa Webber-Bey, researcher, A Thousand Familiar Faces “It was very satisfying to . . . come away that much richer in knowledge about Scholastic history, about teenagers, about the 20th century.” → Special Thanks Producer: Maxine Osa Sound engineer: Daniel Jordan Music composer: Lucas Elliot Eberl → Coming Soon Pride Month: Author Simon James Green Talks About Gay Club!

Since debuting in the New York Times Magazine on August 14, 2019, the 1619 Project has ignited a debate about American history, the founding of the country, and the legacy emanating from the nation's history with chattel slavery. The project's creator and editor, Nikole Hannah-Jones, has described the project as seeking to place “the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.” Components of a related school curriculum have been adopted in major cities like Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Buffalo, New York. For her work on the project, Hannah-Jones was awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. A book collecting all the essays debuted at number one on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list in November 2021. Now, the 1619 Project has been reimagined as a television docuseries from Lionsgate and Hulu. But the project has also come in for heavy criticism from historians and economists of all political and philosophical persuasions for inaccuracies in “matters of verifiable fact” in history and economics. In response to these critics, Hannah-Jones has declared the project not a work history, but instead a work of journalism. One of the project's most frequent critics is Phil Magness, Senior Research Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research. In this episode, which is a rebroadcast of an interview from August 2020, I talk with Phil Magness about the objectives of the 1619 Project, the economic history of slavery, the project's historical errors, and why many Americans seem to have such a difficult time accepting the complicated totality of our own history.Subscribe to our podcastsRegister Now for Business Matters 2023Apply Now for Acton University 2023 (Early Bird Pricing) Hosted on Acast. Today on Boston Public Radio: Art Caplan weighed in on new research into so-called “SuperAgers,” whose brains are as sharp as those 20 or 30 years younger than them. Caplan is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and founding head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU School of Medicine in New York City. Then, we opened up the phone lines, asking listeners if they're staying on Twitter amid numerous controversial changes to the platform. Andrea Cabral talked about a bank heist gone awry in Martha's Vineyard. Cabral is the former Suffolk County Sheriff and the former Secretary of Public Safety. Hannah Jones and Rachel Flor discussed the upcoming Earthshot Prize ceremony in Boston this weekend, and the current state of climate action. Andy Ihnatko shared his thoughts on Twitter versus Mastodon, and the potential ramifications of the Kids Online Safety Act as documented by multiple human rights and LGBTQ+ groups. Ihnatko is a tech writer, blogger and podcaster. Sy Montgomery joined us for this month's edition of “The Afternoon Zoo,” explaining how dogs evolved from wolves into man's best friend. Montgomery is a journalist, naturalist and a BPR contributor. Her latest book is “The Hawk's Way: Encounters with Fierce Beauty.” We ended the show by asking listeners whether they're early risers or night owls.
Charlie speaks at Dayspring Christian Academy's “Remember America” series at the Lancaster County Convention Center, only two days after Nikole Hannah-Jones spoke at St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Lancaster, presenting two diametrically opposed visions for America. Charlie explains why he is very happy to put his vision for America against Nikole Hannah Jones, author and creator of the 1619 lie. Charlie outlines why the Constitution is in fact the greatest political document created in all of history, and why, in contrasty to Hannah-Jones presentation, the Constitution was not a "make good" on the Declaration of Independence, but rather a fulfillment of the providential promises first articulated by the Founding Fathers as they broke with the British Empire. Charlie then explains the difference between a Constitutional Republic manifested by the Founding Fathers and a Democracy, which is often promoted and discussed by Hannah-Jones and others on the left. But why are we even having to defend the founding documents and other obviously exceptional institutions in America? Charlie confronts the deconstructionist doctrines that are currently poisoning the American body politic and then lays out the very basic actions required by each of us to defend, restore and preserve America.
