Take 5 minutes to lead, take action and help the hunting community! Jess Johnson with the Wyoming Wildlife Federation maps out the status of legislation being developed, and the need for hunting community engagement and support NOW. This is an opportunity to lead and help establish better laws that continue to support and favor hunting and trapping, while penalizing and deterring truly unacceptable behavior.  Background: the Daniel, WY "wolf cruelty incident" has spurred a national outcry for laws that have more teeth int them... This demand included a coalition of 1000s of hunters and 70+ hunting industry organizations. Legislative Next Steps: in early October the Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee will review and update proposed legislation that comes out of a "Predator Mgmt Working Group/SubCommittee".  Current Need for Legislation Improvements: the legislative process is often messy and the proposed law here is not fully baked, so we as hunters can steer it towards a better statute and more likely success on the way to the WY Governor's desk.  - email the committee leadership: Chairwoman, Senator Wendy Schuler and Chairwoman (Wendy.Schuler@wyoleg.gov ) , Representative Sandy Newsome ( Sandy.Newsome@wyoleg.gov ) - Identify yourself as a hunter who values wildlife, fair chase and the need for simple, successful and effective legislation  - Request that the proposed "Cruelty to Wildlife" legislation be amended to (1) remove all mention of motorized and over-snow vehicles to simplify and focus the legislation and (2) move the new law into Title 23 (wildlife laws) for better implementation and to maintain its legal relationship to wildlife while eliminating potential complications involving hunting and trapping.  - Cc your email to include Jessi Johnson at Wyoming Wildlife Federation so that she knows the hunting community is speaking out. jessijohnson@wyomingwildlife.org  - Finally, share this call to action in your community. When we are silent, we are subject to the whims or mistakes of others. When we lead and are proactive, our community can define the future and maintain a role as stewards and standard bearers.  *** #wyomingwildlife #advocacy #wildlife #hunting #wolf #wolves #hunting #legislation #conservation #wildlifemanagement #wildlifeconservation #predators #wyoming

As the leaves turn and the air chills, "Wild Things & Wild Places" returns with a compelling two-part series that delves deep into the heart of Wyoming's wilderness. Featuring Brian Nesvik, the seasoned Director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, these concise 20-minute episodes pack a punch, unraveling the story of a landscape and its inhabitants emerging from a brutal winter. In the first episode, we journey alongside Director Nesvik as he outlines the remarkable resilience of Wyoming's wildlife. The recent winter's severity tested the limits of survival. The narrative takes a turn as we dig into the pressing issue of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a concerning wildlife health challenge that has been on the radar of conservationists and wildlife managers across the country. Nesvik shares insights on the disease's impact in Wyoming and the steps being taken to manage its spread—a conversation that's both timely and crucial for anyone invested in the future of North America's wild spaces. And when the hard talk ends, gather 'round for the 'Campfire Chat' segment—a unique feature that caps off each episode with reflections, anecdotes, and a moment of camaraderie that reminds us why these wild places matter to all of us. Don't forget, the exploration doesn't end here. Tune in next Tuesday for the next installment of revelations and wildlife wisdom. In the meantime, for those eager to dive deeper into the life and work of Brian Nesvik, a treasure trove of information awaits your curiosity with a simple search. "Wild Things & Wild Places" isn't just a series—it's a window into the complex dance of nature and human effort, a conversation that beckons us to listen, learn, and act. So, as the wild calls, will you answer? As the flames of the day's conversations dwindle to a warm, inviting glow, "Wild Things & Wild Places" welcomes you to another intimate Campfire Chat. This session shines a light on a voice that resonates with passion and purpose—Jessi Johnson of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. Jessi is not just an advocate; she's a storyteller, conservationist, and a pioneer for women in the hunting community. With her roots deeply entrenched in the wide-open spaces of Wyoming, she has dedicated her time and energy to nurturing the land that gives so much to its inhabitants. Her work with the Wyoming Wildlife Federation is more than a job—it's a testament to her commitment to conservation and her love for Wyoming's natural heritage. This Campfire Chat is more than an exchange of ideas—it's an ode to the spirit of the hunt and the stewardship of the land. Jessi shares her favorite hunting story, one that resonates with the ethos of the hunter and the hunted, reflecting a relationship as ancient as the wilderness itself. Her tale is not just a story of pursuit, but a narrative that weaves the bond between humans and a relationship with a friend and nature, highlighting the profound experiences that shape hunters and gatherers. Artemis Outdoors - Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:033) On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast, we throw it back to a conversation from a couple years ago. Mark sits down with Jessi Johnson and Chelsea Cassens. Jessi Johnson is the founder of Artemis Outdoors.  This organization, as Jessi describes it during the podcast, was "born of the need to see women's voices more actively represented in conservation with a hunting and fishing angle".  The key topics this group tries to focus on are ethics, philosophy, women, and mentoring new hunters. Chelsea Cassens was the first ambassador for Artemis Outdoors.  Chelsea grew up in a small town in Oregon where she learned all about the outdoors.  She currently lives in Idaho where the outdoor opportunities are numerous. Jessi grew up in a ranching family in Wyoming where she learned about the land and all it has to offer.  Like Chelsea, she also lives out West where she loves to spend time in the outdoors. They are two women from different backgrounds, grew up to love the outdoors so much that they want to share it with anyone willing to listen. Listen in for fun hunting stories, many laughs, and to learn more about this organization. Being an environmentalist doesn't necessarily limit your outdoor recreation pastimes to hiking, mountain biking, skiing or rock climbing. Those of us who indulge these so-called action sports should remember that we share the natural world with folks whose connection to the outdoors also includes activities like hunting and fishing. Personally I took up fly fishing a few years ago and pardon the pun I'm hooked. And on a trip to Wyoming in 2017 I met a young woman who has a passion for hunting. Jessi Johnson is an environmental activist who shared with me the story of a remarkable experience she had while hunting elk in the Wild. Along with one's passion for the outdoors must also come an understanding of the balance between life and death. As a bow hunter Jessi Johnson knows firsthand the responsibilities and obligations that go along with being a full participant in the natural world. Though she hunts for sport, the elk she kills for food bring her closer to the wilderness she aims to protect. In the edition of the Joy Trip Project we explore the  seeming contradictions of wildlife conservation through hunting.   This story details a vivid description an actual elk hunt. Though not overly graphic sensitive listeners should be advised… “We are all filled with a longing for the wild. There are few culturally sanctioned antidotes for this yearning. We were taught to feel shame for such a desire. We grew our hair long and used it to hide our feelings. But the shadow of Wild Woman still lurks behind us during our days and in our nights. No matter where we are, the shadow that trots behind us is definitely four-footed.” ― Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype Jessi Johnson is the co-founder of Artemis Sportswomen and the Public Lands Coordinator at the Wyoming Wildlife Federation.
