Ashley Chance worked as the southeast program cordinator for Artemis over the past two and a half years. She is intelligent, kind, humble, empathetic, skilled and incredibly talented at everything she does. She made an impact on every single ambassador and leader she came into contact with and her leadership will be greatly missed. Ashley is now advancing onto the next stage of her incredible career in wildlife conseration.  Ashley lives in east Tennessee with her husband and two dogs. She spends time outdoors as a hunter, angler, and horseback rider. Ashley was raised on a farm in Minnesota and earned a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, she traveled around the country working as a wildlife technician on numerous research projects. In 2013 she boarded a plane for Ghana, West Africa, where she spent two years serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a rural village. Ashley fell in love with a scraggly little puppy during her time in Ghana and managed to bring him all the way back home with her. Upon her return to the United States, she began a master's program at Mississippi State University to determine how hunting pressure influences deer movements. While there, she met her husband and they acquired an English Springer Spaniel that is the most versatile (and crazy!) hunting dog you'll ever meet. Ashley's role as the South East Regional Coordinator was to extend the work of Artemis to southern states by supporting sportswomen as conservation leaders and helping them to build community. Few legacies can impact the amount of people, organizations, species and habitats that Becky Humphries has. Starting as an employee of the US Fish and Wildlife Service in the 1970s, she quickly transitioned to state wildlife work the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and grew through the ranks culminating in her being appointed Director of the Department of Natural Resources and then in 2010 of the newly-developed Department of Natural Resources and Environment, which combined the DNR and state's environmental agency. She was the first woman to hold either director role in Michigan. Humphries' leadership saw the department through some of the most trying and uncertain times – including the discovery of Bovine Tuberculosis and chronic wasting disease in the state. Humphries' work with the DNR elevated her to leadership roles within Association of Fish and Wild Agencies. She not only won their two most prestigious awards for her work, but she was named chair of the Fish and Wild Health Committee and led the National Fish and Wildlife Health Initiative. After more than 30 years with the DNR, Humphries left in 2011 to join Ducks Unlimited as the director of conservation partnerships. In 2013, Humphries joined the National Wild Turkey Federation as its chief conservation officer before being named chief executive officer in 2017 (Sourced from Michigan United Conservation Clubs). Margaret Atwood's latest collection of essays, Burning Questions, gathers together her essays and other occasional non-fiction pieces from 2004 to 2021. She is the author of more than fifty books of fiction, poetry and critical essays. Her novels include Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, Alias Grace, and The Blind Assassin which won the Booker prize in 2000. Her 1985 classic, The Handmaid's Tale, was followed in 2019 by a sequel, The Testaments, which was also a Booker Prize winner (with Bernadine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other). Margaret joins Emma to talk about culture wars, free speech, feminism, grief and being in your 80's. The Labour MP Harriet Harman has called for a full investigation into how a housing association failed to realise that a female tenant had apparently been left dead in her south London flat for more than two years. Harriet joins Emma to talk about this happening in her constituency, and also how she has been coping since the sudden death of her husband Jack Dromey last month. "There was urine flying through the air" - a new report out today in the Telegraph lays bare what it calls the ‘incontinence crisis' blighting elite women's sport. Female athletes are overwhelmingly at risk of pelvic-floor dysfunction, leading to urinary incontinence which has, according to this report, become normalised in certain sports. Anna Kessel, Women's Sport Editor at The Telegraph, joins Emma. The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan is known for her many roles in TV shows such as Getting On, No Offence and The Thick of It. She's just been nominated for a BAFTA leading actress award for the film After Love. Set in Dover, she plays a white English woman called Mary Hussain who converted to Islam at marriage, but following the unexpected death of her husband many years later uncovers a secret about him across the channel in Calais. For far too long, we were told that Man was the hunter and Woman the gatherer. Are we surprised to have witnessed a “hunting industry” that for decades has only catered to the interests of men? Recent studies actually contradict the beliefs that prehistoric women weren't hunters and in this episode, residency host Gabaccia Moreno is our guide through the stories and reflections of women who have found a role for hunting in their lives, only about 10,000 years after our predecessors did.To help paint a picture of hunting that reflects a spectrum of perspectives, Gabaccia talked with women from different generations, locations, ethnicities, levels of experience, and choices of weapon. By no means is every woman hunter here represented, but the few that are, have shared valuable lessons that anyone can learn from. This is the fifth of six episodes hosted by Gabaccia Moreno this year as part of our She Explores host residency program.Featured in this episode: Tracy Ross (she/her), Kamilia Elsisie (she/her), Jess Johnson (she/her), Gabi Peña (she/they), Miriam Garcia-Jorns (she/her), and Lydia Parker (she/her); Voice submission from Gabi's father, Angel Peña.Hosted & Produced by Gabaccia MorenoEdited by Gale StraubA production of Ravel MediaSponsored by Yonder, Danner, & RumplJoin the She Explores Podcast community on FacebookVisit She-Explores.com & Follow Us on InstagramResourcesFeatured in this episode: Tracy Ross @heli_girl_1970Kamilia Elsisie: @kamkam520Jess Johnson: @jesscjohnson_Gabi PeñaMiriam Garcia-Jorns: @mgjornsLydia Parker: @lydiaparker123Artemis Sportswomen: Instagram & WebsiteHunters of Color: Instagram & WebsiteHunting + Conservation StatsFemale Hunters in the Early AmericasMan the Hunter, Woman the Gatherer? Nuestra Tierra Ravel MediaSponsors and Discount CodesRumpl: Get 15% off your first order with code “SHE15” at checkout at Rumpl.com.Yonder: Learn more at book a nature-rich stay at Yonder.com.Danner: GO THERE in Danner's most iconic styles by visiting Danner.com.Music is licensed through Musicbed.Episodes air on Wednesdays-- subscribe wherever you listen so you never miss an episode.

*SEASON 2 FINALE & Christmas Special!* We did it!As we approach the end of 2020 we wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has downloaded and listened to our podcast over the past ten months- we couldn’t have done it without you and we hope we have provided some joy, whilst informing and inspiring you with our episodes throughout what has been a distinctly difficult year.In our final episode of Series 2, we speak to Dr Ali Bowes, a researcher and lecturer in Sport and Sociology at Nottingham Trent University and a former Physical Education (PE) teacher. In the interview, Ali recalls her time as a PE teacher, coaching 15 year-old girls and the challenges she faced. We also talk about why PE is not the answer to solving the high dropout rates among young girls within sport and physical activity and discuss why accessibility is such a big issue when it comes to young girls discovering a sport they love.We discuss the research looking into the effect of Covid on elite sportswomen conducted by Dr Ali Bowes herself and co-hosts Dr Jess Piasecki and Lucy Lomax over the summer of 2020. We finish by discussing whether the narrative around women’s sport is changing and if we are at a ‘tipping point’ towards a more equal representation of women sports in the media. We also speak to Jo Wimble-Groves & Caroline Kings, co-founders of ‘We are Girls in Sport’ to ask about their initiative which provides young girls with role models and spreads awareness of less mainstream activities.Resources:The impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on elite sportswomen research paper:https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23750472.2020.1825988We would like to thank our title sponsor for series 2 -Pretty Athletic.Visit https://prettyathletic.com to view the amazing range of products available and use discount code FEMALEATHLETEPOD for 20% off. Guests: Eloise Wellings, Madeline Hills, Michael Crooks, Carrie Graf, Keely Froling & Heather McKay. How far has women’s sport come? Events like Australia's Twenty20 World Cup with a crowd of 90,000 in March suggest a long way. In episode four of our Sport Integrity Australia podcast ‘On Side’, we discuss parity in sport - where we’ve come from and what still needs to be done - with one of our greatest sportswomen Heather McKay, one of our greatest basketball coaches Carrie Graf and up-and-coming basketball star Keely Froling. We also chat to Baseball Australia’s General Manager Performance Pathways & Player Development, Michael Crooks, about the sport’s challenges – funding, match fixing, differences in anti-doping in the Major League - and creating pathways for young athletes dreaming big in the US. Finally, we talk to Gold Coast Commonwealth Games heroes Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills who, along with Celia Sullohern, created one of the highlights of the Games when they waited for Lineo Chaka at the finish line, and triple Olympian Bronwen Knox answers the question “If one person in a team tests positive, does the whole team get tested?” A leading advocate for the equality in sport, Graf says there needs to be a shift in the thinking of what is a Return On Investment “rather than just commercial and eye balls”. “I was a little girl who grew up when there wasn’t any role models and you couldn’t aspire to work as a professional athlete, as a coach,” she says. “l was fortunate to have a professional coaching career for 20-plus years, I think we’re certainly seeing a shift that little girls can look on TV and look around the media and go ‘wow, I could do this a job’, and that that is a legitimate job but I still think there is a long, long way to go.” Froling, who has two brothers currently playing in the National Basketball League, says she often compares the rewards. “I look at what the boys get and what they’re doing and I think, ‘oh, it’s so annoying’ … we work just as hard if not harder than them and aren’t rewarded in the same way.” It’s certainly a long way from when McKay, a winner of 16 British Opens in a row, competed as an amateur, having to take two months off work without pay simply to play. As an amateur she says she played “for fun” and without the pressure athletes’ face now. “Today the pressure is there, the big money’s there, so when the money is there, certainly there is going to be a lot of pressure because you’ve got to perform and that’s really the difference between today and in my time. It’s their full-time job.” With significant contracts up for grabs for young baseballers overseas, Crooks is trying to develop right path for talented young players. “Managing the workloads and expectations for these young players is really, really critical to make sure that they get the most of their opportunity when they do finally get over to the United States as opposed to sending them over as a 16-year-old with no support mechanisms, no safety nets for them and basically leaving them to the wolves so to speak to try and survive in what is an incredible cut-throat world of professional sport,” Crooks says. In our From The Highlight Reel segment Australian 10,000m runners Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills relive an act of sportsmanship that was beamed around the globe. “We were just doing what we would always do in any other race and it just so happened that there was a whole lot of cameras and a whole lot of people watching,” says Wellings, who concedes her own run was “one of the worst” of her career. “It takes vulnerability to finish a race like that for Lineo when things aren’t going well to run the last three laps on your own. As Madeline said you are very exposed and it’s a vulnerable thing to be in.” Madeline, agrees. “We’ve all had that day,” she says. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Merrill "Little Red" Robinson, a native Texan and born and raised in Austin, is a redheaded sportswoman who heeds the call to hunt, fly fish, hike, advocate for public land and water access, promote the conservation of our nation's wildlife, land, waterways, and fish, and for anything and everything outdoors. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, better known as "Ole Miss," Robinson initially went to college to become a sideline reporter and sports broadcaster. However, she changed course and earned a degree in print journalism with a specialization in public relations.   Founder and owner of an outdoor industry public relations and marketing company, ButterUp Public Relations, located in Austin, Texas, Robinson works alongside a small creative team of outdoor enthusiasts who specialize in public relations, marketing, social media, branding, photography, web development, and graphic design.    In preparation for a black bear hunt in the Gila National Forest of New Mexico, Robinson set out to purchase as much women's gear as possible.  Much to her disappointment, she found little to no women's gear that fit right, was manufactured for durability, and the majority of the options had unnecessary colors such as pink or purple in the camouflage patterns. A few months after she returned home from her successful hunt, she started the Little Red Sportslist campaign.    The Little Red Sportslist is a women's hunting and fishing campaign. The campaign is a detailed list of wild game and fish that Robinson will be hunting and fishing for, and she has taken on the challenge of utilizing only women's gear. The mission is to publicize the available equipment and gear for women in the outdoor market, to help women feel more comfortable in hunting culture, as well as educate women on the importance of the conservation of our wildlife, fish, waterways, and public land and water access.   Robinson has already begun to help women get more involved in the outdoors by creating an all-female Facebook group called Sportswomen Certified. The group is filled with women who love to hunt, fish, hike, trail run, camp, and just be outdoors. We're a group of Sportswomen across the globe uniting to empower and encourage each other in the outdoors.
