Some guys have the “storybook” path to the NFL: highly recruited out of college, invited to the NFL Combine and drafted. Not Todd Davis, he had to prove himself over and over again. Not only did he make it to the NFL, he stayed for several years and was a Captain for the Broncos Super Bowl 50 team. Todd played high school football at a small school in California. His dad sent out tapes to everyone and anyone. Todd had his sights set on Stanford, until they told his dad they didn't recruit in his area. That gave Todd all the motivation he needed. He took one of the few offers he did get and went to Sacramento State. He left as the school's 2nd best tackler in program history (351 tackles). The NFL draft came and went. The New Orleans Saints called because they needed “a body” for offseason training. Todd showed he was more than just a body and got noticed by Joe Vitt who promised he'd have a spot for Todd when training camp came around. Coach Vitt stood by his word. The Broncos snagged him off waivers from the Saints in mid-October of his rookie season and Todd played several years in Denver, until he was released after a second calf injury. These days, Todd is in real estate development, co-hosts the DNVR Denver Broncos Podcast and is raising three kids with his wife Zina.
In my latest Broncos pod presented by SuperBook Sports, I discuss the most humiliating regular-season loss in team history. The Broncos allowed 70 points, the most in an NFL game since 1966, as the Dolphins became the first team to produce five passing and rushing touchdowns. Will defensive coordinator Vance Joseph continue calling plays? Will senior defensive assistant Joe Vitt take over? And how does coach Sean Payton keep this team from checking out? We hear from the players and what it looks like moving forward. My pod is made possible by the great folks at Mile High Sports, RBJ Glass and Most Valuable Portraits Inc.
Sean Payton has hired Joe Vitt as an assistant coach. Vitt was with Payton in New Orleans during the bounty-gate scandal. Dave is reflecting on the history of players being paid extra for physical play. There's another large contract for Roger Goodell. Dave is assessing the Broncos wide receiving core. Julie is assessing Dave's willingness to use profanity. Thanks for checking out the show this week!

It is Thursday, which makes it podcast mailbag day. Thanks once again to everybody who submitted great questions for the show. A mailbag wouldn't be possible without mailbag questions. Apologies if your question went unanswered this week. Feel free to resend it next week if that was the case.On today's show we look at how the looming expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement might impact free agency this year, whether we know how much salary cap space the Jets will have once the new league year begins, what winning free agency would look like for the Jets, whether Adam Gase's presence will have the Jets focusing on the offensive side of the ball in the Draft more than in recent seasons, and whether there's anything to worry about with former rivals Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt both on the defensive coaching staff. Since Sean Payton dropped Steve Spagnuolo like a bag of dirt it's all hands on deck this week. Andrew Juge, Fearless leader Dave, and Kevin Held all join Ralph to discuss the Spags firing, and possible replacements. Kevin, since he's lives in Spags previous failure of St. Louis, wonders what should we have seen to know this was a horrible hire. Dave has thoughts on the futures of Jonathan Vilma/Will Smith/Roman Harper and brags on the Chronic covering the story like gravy on a biscuit. Andrew breaks down if the Saints have the personal to run the 3-4. We have a special edition of Game Time where everyone tries to figure out which scenario is more likely. These include fans getting run over by streetcars and Bobby Hebert getting arrested. The boys also discuss Joe Vitt's awesome leaked testimony, Roger Goodell's Reddit answers, and mock Jeff Duncan because he's Jeff Duncan and was getting draft picks from Gregg Williams.Oh and Kevin Held has a meltdown that involves Kaiser Soze. It's can't miss podcasting.
Andrew Juge of the Saints Nation stops by to discuss the Saints meltdown in Denver. He wonders why the Saints aren't using the tackle eligible play anymore to help the run game. He also explains why the Saints will have a tough off season trying to rebuild the defense. Ralph asks if the Saints have finally given up on the 2012 season. Andrew also wonders what the hell Joe Vitt was thinking making some of the moves he did. And finally Andrew and Ralph argue over if LSU has a shot this week against Alabama.
Andrew Juge of the Saints Nation stops by to discuss the Saints win in Tampa. He explains how the offense finally started to click by using great pass protection, the long ball, and Joe Morgan's super powers. He also thinks the running game is close to breaking out. Ralph and Andrew then discuss the defense and they want just want one thing from it; To stop being the worst defense in NFL history. Is it too much to ask? Andrew says after 6 games the defense isn't likely to improve and if Drew Brees wasn't the Saints QB they'd probably be 0-6. Andrew says the saints can't do anything well and show no signs good play is even possible. Andrew also grades Jonathan Vilma's return and wonders if Joe Vitt's return will give the team a lift.
Brian Billick and Dennis Green give their perspective on of all the major stories around the NFL. Hear what Billick has to say about Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's body language, as well as what the Monday firing of Panthers general manager Marty Hurney means for the team. Andrew Juge of the Saints Nation stops by for his Monday film review to analyze the Saints first win of the season. Ralph asks why the offensive line can look so good at pass protection but can't run block to save their lives. Has Spags turned into Gregg Williams 2.0 and should we expect all blitz all the time the rest of 2012? Ralph explains the historic pace the Saints defense is on and why the compare to the 0-16 Lions. Andrew begs for Corey White not to play anymore. How much of a boost will Joe Vitt be? And finally Ralph predicts what October holds for the Saints.
This week, Joe Vitt goes on the 'Maury Povich Show' for a lie detector test, Dave Cariello tries to figure out if Anthony Hargrove making a stink will ultimately matter. The guys aren't sure if the Saints are guilty of intent to injure, but they are 100% certain children are better at Photoshop and PowerPoint than Gregg Williams. Kevin also wonders how anyone could read a Drew Brees tweet and think he isn't pro military (or do people forget Drew went to Guantanamo Bay, and it wasn't for vacation). Dave ties a ribbon round the old oak tree. Ralph was really disappointed when Twitter broke Thursday and it wasn't because Brees had signed. Kevin and Ralph also wonder if the stupidity of some people on Twitter towards athletes might eventually go from stupid tweets to terrible action.
