“We've been doing this podcast for over a year now, and I think if you listen to a very early one…we said this was going to be the year of mergers, acquisitions, and bloodbath."– Jason Laronde"We're good!”– Joel Sherlock~“When you build an entire greenhouse, and you expect that it will get paid off in two crops… Even if the economics were that good, you can only assume then that other people will get into that market. … And so now, some of our customers who are the biggest clients in the world—the biggest cannabis companies in the world—they're starting to shift, and it's like, ‘If I can pick up 2% here and 4% there.' And that's such a shift from 18 months ago where it was just like, ‘I've got a license, how quick can I get going?'”– Joel Sherlock~“I feel like more cool sh*t's gonna come to light at MJBiz. Everybody's going to walk around that floor and be like, ‘Whoa, what is that and where did that come from?' I think that's going to be the show that everybody goes, ‘Boom, that's what we've been doing for the last year.'”– Dexter L'Amarca~As Extraction Insiders celebrates its first birthday, and in anticipation of events season, hosts Joel Sherlock and Jason Laronde sit down to take a look back as well as forward. They're joined by Dexter L'Amarca, Ancillary Sales Manager at Vitalis and resident expert on innovation in cannabis processing and products. It's safe to say that it's been a year of massive change. The world of cannabis is opening up, and there have been sweeping regulatory changes, particularly across the USA and Europe. In Canada, the next legislative hurdles approach with psilocybin, MDMA, and more. Within the cannabis industry, companies have merged, acquired, succeeded, and failed, all with an eye toward serving an increasingly educated consumer on a growing scale. The pandemic also provided companies like Vitalis with an opportunity to hit reset and explore how new technology could solve problems, resulting in a massive surge in innovation. All in all, so much has happened over the past year and a half in the background of the industry, and our hosts cannot wait to see what this means for the future.Vitalis is going to be at two of the largest cannabis conferences at the end of this year, east and west, and is excited to see you all in person. First, find Vitalis right up front at MJBizCon in Las Vegas from October 20 to 22, 2021, as a proud Gold Sponsor. Right after that, they're heading to NYC for CWCBExpo from November 4 to 6, and you may even find Jason on stage for a TED-style talk. These will be shows you won't want to miss, as a year's investment in research, development, and innovation comes to light.

Why is extraction vital for the cannabis industry? We're joined this week by serial entrepreneur Joel Sherlock, Chairman and Co-Founder of Vitalis Extraction Technologies. Vitalis is an engineering and extractions company and industry leaders in the manufacture and sales of industrial supercritical CO2 extraction systems. In this episode, we explore the ‘ins and outs' of the cannabis extraction process, how different grades of cannabis are processed, and how important extraction is to the industry.Episode SummaryJoel comes from a finance background and ‘stumbled' into the market in 2011 when working within real estate in Canada. He later became a landlord for multiple cannabis businesses.Joel and his team found it frustrating that there was no standardised extraction machine across the industry so set out to make his own with the help of friends. They are currently the largest manufacturer in the world of extraction machines and hold 6 patents. Vitalis are the global leaders in co2 extraction machines but also produce cryo ethanol machines. The extraction uses biomass (from the cannabis plant) which is ground down into a coffee like consistency. Each part of the cannabis plant contains different amounts of active compounds, for example the seeds and stems do not contain enough harvestable material for the extraction to be economically viable.Flowers have the highest concentration of cannabinoids, but is also the most expensive part of the plant. Trims and lower quality bud is often put into the extraction lab. Solvents such as added co2, ethanol and hydrocarbons are added to isolate cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.Traditionally all cannabinoids are extracted together and are later separated in a laboratory who process and isolate the crude/raw oils which have been extracted.EU standards of Good Manufacturing Practice mean that processes involved have to be incredibly precise, and all manufactured materials need to be fully tracked and traced.Within the main extraction process, fibres and leftover biomass are removed.Extraction using the co2 method allows selectability and customizability no matter where the market goes in the future.Hydrocarbons by nature are incredibly powerful solvents and are able to extract product very quickly. The hydrocarbons bond to the oils during extraction meaning they have to extracted afterwards in controlled environments. Residual solvents using this method is a risk.
“Doing a little bit more diligence upfront gives me more security and comfort... I get really excited but I've learned to slow down and say ok excitement is needed and that's step one and then logical diligence is step two.” – Joel Sherlock A serial entrepreneur and business leader, Joel Sherlock is a born connector who builds great teams and delivers the expertise to execute. Joel has been at the helm of nine successful start-ups and corporate exits, including one of BC's top private real estate brokerages, a national first action sports e-commerce company, a successful corporate consulting firm and a few private equity funds. Joel's time is now focused on Vitalis Extraction Technologies, a Kelowna BC based global leader in supercritical CO2 extraction technologies and industrial equipment, the impetus for which was provided by his involvement in commercial real estate. He is Chairman and Co-Founder of Spectrum Asset Leasing and Doventi Capital. Doventi Capital in Vancouver is the private equity fund Joel co-founded to support professionals in the growing legal cannabis market. Spectrum Leasing in Toronto is an asset backed lender designed to support entrepreneurs and manufacturers in the world's fastest growing market. Born in Winnipeg Manitoba, Joel's early years were spent working hard on the farm and studying finance at UBC and Harvard Business School with a stop at BMW becoming the number two salesperson in Canada. With offices in Kelowna, Vancouver and Toronto plus a rigorous travel schedule, Joel loves to balance that out with a few days on the farm, with no phone or internet. Philanthropically Joel contributes to Charity Water and ME to WE and sits on the board of a number of charitable organizations including The Mel and Mart Zajac Foundation, Zajac Ranch for Children (Vancouver). Show Notes [02:04] Patrick introduces his next guest to The Everyday Millionaire: Joel Sherlock [03:30] Let's get right to it! What is Joel up to and what does he do? [04:53] Joel provides an extended remix of what he does in Kelowna and his path from commercial landlord to solutions provider {albeit initially reluctant} for an emerging medical cannabis industry. [07:43] Initially investing in real estate and his client's inventory, Joel then stepped into new territory by financing the equipment and went further still to create an equipment manufacturing start-up. Entrepreneurialism is in his blood. [09:28] Joel delves into the commercial aspect of his real estate and the checks and balances he undertook to ensure their asset was protected. [10:51] As a commercial landlord, Joel had to examine the long-term viability of his inherited hit-and-miss tenants in a tenuous industry vs. new tenants who were bringing forth an emerging, potentially risky but profitable business in legal medical cannabis. [11:54] Joel expands on the extensive diligence he undertook with the medical cannabis business from the chief of police to the patients themselves. Still with hesitation he decided to move forward with it. [13:15] Patrick and Joel focus in on the necessity of slowing down to do thorough diligence with our investments, even when it appears to be a no-brainer opportunity. It provides far more security and peace of mind. [16:01] The extraction business. Joel takes us through the process of how it works, then how he identified and crafted solutions to an issue with his extraction equipment investments. [18:24] Joel came to realize he didn't need to replicate himself to expand his business; he needed to acknowledge the weak spots in his own skillset and recruit the best people to fill the gaps. [20:44] Where does the name Vitalis come from? [21:26] Although there is a diverse customer base for the extraction equipment they manufacture, Vitalis focuses on the hemp and cannabis industry due to the explosive growth in that market. Joel further explains their philosophy on exceptional service,

Today on Blunt Business we are joined by Pete Patterson, the COO & Co-Founder of Vitalis Extraction Technology. The technology behind the Vitalis Extraction Technology (Vitalis) can be used to decaffeinate coffee or even make perfume, but the Pete saw a rare opportunity in a budding market. Along with his two business partners Joel Sherlock and James Seabrook, the trio began creating the Vitalis business plan, which applied CO2 extraction technology to the cannabis industry. At their Kelowna factory, now manufactures units that use high-pressure carbon dioxide to turn cannabis into essential oils used for both medical and recreational cannabis products. We talk about why is it that CO2 extraction leads the way as the go-to process as opposed to using nitrogen or other various methods on the market. Plus how Pete transitioned into cannabis in the first place.

A New Standard In Cannabis Processing with Joel Sherlock, Co-Founder / Chairman – Vitalis Extraction Tech. Vitalis Extraction Technology produces sophisticated high-flowing, industrial-scale, supercritical CO2 extraction systems for the cannabis industry. Vitalis was founded in 2016 in British Columbia and they have scaled rapidly. Their industrial scale supercritical CO2 systems are now deployed on three continents. A New Standard In Cannabis Processing? Joel was asked about the benefits of SCO2 Extraction: It provides companies with a number of benefits. Since supercritical CO2 extraction is safer compared to some other methods, such as butane or ethanol, it's easier for companies to comply with facility rules and regulations. It's particularly important for companies with operations in multiple states and countries, as Joel points out. " ... Regulations vary jurisdiction to jurisdiction [and] ethanol and hydrocarbons are combustible solvents and traditionally require varying degrees of customization, explosion proof walls, floor venting and fire suppression,” he told Benzinga. In this way, using supercritical CO2 provides companies with an advantage, “as they can have the same machine in every location.” A serial entrepreneur and business leader, Joel is a born connector who has been building great teams and delivering the expertise to execute. Joel has been at the helm of 9 successful start-ups and corporate exits, including one of BC's top private real estate brokerages, a national first action sports e-commerce company, a successful corporate consulting firm and a few private equity funds.
