The Cost of Deportations looks at deportation through the lens of one Central American nation that sends migrants north— Guatemala.  About two million Guatemalans live in the US. But, half of those here lack legal status, and tens of thousands of Guatemalans are deported back to their country each year. Thus, the question arises… are the countries these migrants left prepared for an influx of returnees? This week, journalist Maria Martin explores that and other questions— including whether some Guatemalans still plan to migrate north, even given the hardening of immigration policy in the US. Featuring: Carlos Lopez, Casa del Migrante Guatemala; Martin, Juan Sebastian, Rodolfo, and Hicer – Guatemalans who have migrated and been deported, or who have attempted to migrate to the US; Lisbeth Gramajo, anthropologist at Rafael Landivar University; Willie Barreno, chef and founder of Cafe Red Kat; Fredy Lopez, San Pedro Credit Cooperative; Don Julio, Q'anjobal Maya elder; Don Sebastian Gaspar, business owner; Father Mauro Verzeletti, director Casa del Migrante Guatemala and El Salvador;  Father Dionisio, pastor of San Pedro Catholic Church; Marvin Otzcoy, Guatemalan Fraternity of Northern Nevada. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE I love today's conversation but I hope it isn't an entirely a self-serving time for me to geek out about something I love. When I was 8 years old I became obsessed with Rent, the musical by Jonathan Larson that became a super hit in the mid 90s. Meanwhile across the state another kid, today's guest Danny Kornfeld also knew every word to the original broadway cast recording and fell in love with the show. Cut to 2016 and that young Renthead is playing the staring role in the show's 20th anniversary tour and today he's talking to me all about how that dream came true. Danny Kornfeld is a talented actor and his staring role in Rent comes after extensive performance experience, studying theater at Syracuse University, and moving to New York City to pursue a career in the theater. It was incredible to get to hear about what led Danny this role as well as explore the reflections that art have on his life and how they've inspired him to be himself more fully in real life. He is so thoughtful around his approach to his work and what it brings to the world. One of his favorite lines from Rent is “Give in to love, or live in fear". In my latest newsletter where I sent my recent reflections on love. The relevance of this line now in our current world shows the relevance Rent still has socially and politically 20 years later. I'm grateful the podcast allows me to connect with interesting people with similar interests like Danny and I'm real excited to see him perform tonight (on the day this is published I'm going to the show here in Detroit). I know regardless of your relationship to the piece you'll enjoy this tangental conversation, but warning, it might make you a new Renthead too... — Show Sponsors — — Aaptiv — Try it FREE for 30 Days Enter the code "LetItOut" at checkoutI 'm loving Aaptiv so much. During WWII, there was a mathematician named Abraham Wald. Wald had an idea about allied bombers. Essentially, bombers were coming back after bombing runs with a lot of damage. Engineers were saying "okay, there's a lot of damage in the wings and tail, so that's where we should put the armor." Right? Not so much. Wald's analysis of where they should really be putting armor became the fundamentals of Operational Science. Jeff and Anthony discuss this idea and what it means today.
