Whether it was Rutgers' upset of Maryland, Syracuse's win over Notre Dame in front of a record crowd in the Dome or Penn State's comeback at Michigan, IL's Terry Foy, Larken Kemp and Nick Ossello (who was brave enough to show up for a portion of the episode despite the Irish's loss) unpack Week 9 of the college lacrosse season. They dissect the Ivy League, from Harvard's one-sided win over Dartmouth to Yale's pivotal outcome over Penn to Cornell's closer-than-it-seemed victory vs. Brown. From there, they dive into Carolina's dominant second half vs. Virginia, then move into the quick-hitters: Gtown over Marquette in OT, High Point upsetting UMass, Loyola getting its first win over Bucknell in OT, Duke snapping its two-game losing streak and Army-Navy pitting two teams coming off wins. They say “Kempin' Ain't Easy” and listen to this — we've got an analyst currently recording from San Sebastian. As such, we're recording before Penn State-Ohio State, but we've got everything you need from Michigan's three-overtime upset at Michigan, Dartmouth's epic OT win at Penn, Boston U's star-making win at Army, Brown's deep dig at UMass, Denver's domination of Duke in Dallas and much more. Among the quick-hitters: Fairfield is the last undefeated team Livvy Dunn leads Bucknell over Lehigh Two Top 20 matchups — No. 14 Richmond 13, No. Gtown 12 and No. 10 Cuse 16, No. 18 Colgate 12 — can't even break into the deep game recaps Nick's Utah upsetting UVA prediction goes wrong, by Terry's prediction that UVA's RPI would fall despite two wins was correct and they're now 24 All that and more in a podcast that can be described in no other way than as a celebration of life and lacrosse. About halfway through the college fallball season, IL's Matt Kinnear, Kevin Brown, Christian Swezey and Terry Foy convene to compare their notes on the teams they've seen so far this month. They start with Swezey and Kinnear's breakdown of Georgetown's win over Virginia at the Bob Kemp Classic, then discuss Notre Dame's win over Harvard at "Playing for Peace" in Chicago. From there, they shift to Philadelphia for an examination of Maryland, Penn State, Lehigh and St. Joe's playday at Springfield High, then wrap with a recap of Yale-Carolina the weekend prior. They also discuss Kinnear's visit to Towson's practice Foy's dropping in on Johns Hopkins.

Over the years I have had the incredible pleasure of emceeing the Embassy Chef Challenge, and with that came the ability to chat with embassy chefs, ambassadors, their families, and attache's. You may remember during the last round, I went to several of the embassies and cooked with their chefs. Oh my goodness it was so much fun, I learned so much, and it gave me the opportunity to share their histories, culture, and of course, cuisine! If you don't know, Events DC's Embassy Chef Challenge is a gathering of embassy chefs from around the world, showcasing the flavors of their home countries in this delicious culinary competition. And the chefs take it seriously! This experience is so DC … in fact DC is truly the only place in the country where an event like this can be executed with such dramatic flair! Mark your calendars for March 7th! Now… where am I? I'm in the Cuban Embassy. Isn't that amazing? For so long this gorgeous building was not utilized or accessible because of the relations between our two countries. But in 2015 that all changed — I mean isn't this what it is all about? Maintaining diplomatic relations with others? Now, I understand that there is a Hemingway bar in here — so you know we are going to get all into it. AND, I am so delighted to reestablish my relations with Jinhee Kim - Chief Creative Officer for Events DC - and create a new relationship with David Ramírez - Cultural Attache for the Embassy of Cuba. So, normally at this part of the show I take you on my culinary tour of where I have been eating this past week — and your girl has been out, so I'm not going to get all into it — because I have some very special guests sitting here with me — But just a quick list! -The New La Bonne Vache in Gtown — get on line! -The New Aventino in Bethesda — make your rez now -Cork celebrated their sweet 16 -Gravitas & Kappo did a collab dinner -The Emperor's birthday at the Japanese Embassy See that fits — Tuesday I'm at the Japanese Embassy and today, I'm here at the Cuban Embassy. Quotes "Help amplify the message you all want to convey, utilizing shared experiences rather than transactions."- Jinhee Kim "Our primary objective is to focus on increased engagement and diplomatic ties through cultural connections and bridges."- David Ramírez "Culinary diplomacy is at the core of embassy practices, where food, art, and music act as universal languages."- Jinhee Kim Chapters 00:00 - Introduction 00:37 - Embassies Exhibit Culture and Cuisine in Washington, DC 04:00 - Insights from Cuban Embassy's Cultural Attaché 09:22 - Cultural Engagement's Role in Diplomatic Relations 12:44 - Inquiry on Architectural Elegance Sparks Enthusiasm 13:10 - Diplomatic Shifts: Repurposing of the Cuban Embassy Building 15:21 - Former Apple Executive Leads DC's Event Scene 18:20 - Embassy Chef Challenge: Uniting Food, Culture, and Pride 21:13 - Bridging DC's International Community Beyond Language Barriers 24:21 - Rome's Enduring Historical Connections with Cuba 28:08 - Dynamic Embassy Events Fuel Engagement in DC 30:36 - Exploring Cultural Heritage Across City Neighborhoods 34:32 - Conclusion Guests Social Media Links: Jinhee Kim and David Ramirez Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/embacubaus/ Website: https://misiones.cubaminrex.cu/es/eeuu/ Featuring Nycci Nellis https://www.instagram.com/nyccinellis/ https://www.thelistareyouonit.com/ Produced by Heartcast Media http://www.heartcastmedia.com
My first thought as I looked at the second week of games was "there aren't a lot of bangers" here. But as always, the college lacrosse gods have spoken and the more I dove into some of these matchups, the more I feel we should see some solid games. Virginia hosting Michigan could be promising, but at the end of the day, can Michigan's defense stifle the UVA offense enough to keep things close? Johns Hopkins hosting Georgetown also has the makings of a solid contest, but after getting smoked by Loyola a weekend ago, do the Greyhounds have some trouble on the horizon? Hopkins was upset by Denver in week one, but bounced back with a solid win over Towson. Which Hopkins team will show up? Maryland will host Loyola (coming off the Gtown win) and I expect this to be a solid fight. Syracuse will be the first team to play three games and should be 3-0 after beating Manhattan on Friday night. Rutgers takes on Stony Brook (on the road) in a game that could be closer than many expect. We also get to see Duke again, North Carolina will take on Mercer leaving Notre Dame as the only ACC team that won't have played yet. I'll talk about these games and many more in this weeks college lacrosse weekend preview show. *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/laxfactor/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/laxfactor/support

If you enjoy schadenfreude, have we got the podcast for you! After watching his alma mater fall behind 11-2 on Saturday, Nick made his triumphant return to the field on Sunday – and promptly rolled his ankle! Battling through the pain, he joins Terry to discuss the Hoyas' impressive W, Aleric Fyock's goalie show, Penn's OT win over Duke, Virginia topping Syracuse 19-10 and Carolina's rebound win over Hopkins.
What a weekend of college lacrosse week #3 brought us. In this weeks recap show, we're going to start by talking about how Virginia dismantled Syracuse, partly thanks to Petey LaSalla getting revenge on Phaup. Connor Shellenberger going off for 7 points didn't hurt Virginia either. The Georgetown defense proved it is every bit as good as advertised by holding off a late Notre Dame comeback bid and beating the Irish and taking their Soda Bread and Irish Stew. Owen McElroy made 24 saves on the day for the Hoyas, 11 of them coming in the 4th quarter to help secure the Gtown victory. High Point and Navy did battle, and despite Navy holding a small lead through most of the game, Asher Nolting (3g, 5a) and company managed to battle back, take a late lead, hold off Navy's attempts to re-take the lead and Michael Ippolito's 4th goal of the second half ended up being the game winner for High Point. In addition to all of these great games, we'll also talk about Penn State waking up and defeating Yale, Richmond made a crazy comeback from the depths of hell to beat Towson in 3 overtimes, Duke got dropped by Penn in sudden death overtime, Cornell handled their face-off business in their win over Lehigh and much more. What a great Saturday of lacrosse we got to see. It started off for me watching Duke and Denver. What started out as a close game ended with Duke winning 19-10 and both Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams putting up 4 goals and 2 helpers. The return of the Ivies happened this weekend and the highlight of Saturday was Penn taking on Georgetown. Great game all the way through that saw the Hoyas get an early edge, and despite getting back to within a goal late, Penn was unable to knot things back up and Gtown wins it 10-8. Hopkins and Loyola played the game of the day. Loyola took a 10-8 lead prior to Hopkins stringing 3 unanswered 4th quarter goals together enroute to the one goal victory. Joey Epstein has continued to play well for Hopkins leading the Jays with 2 goals and 3 assists including the game-tying goal late in the 4th. The surprise of the day was North Carolina getting waxed by Ohio State by a score of 20-8. Ohio State was greatly helped by Justin Inacio dominating the face-off dot winning 18 of 26 of the draws he took and that provided OSU with the possessions needed to put UNC away over the course of the 3rd quarter. Chris Gray finished the game with 3 goals and 4 assists, but it wasn't nearly enough and he got no help. Also returning to action, Notre Dame beat up on Detroit Mercy, Cornell put it on Albany, Colgate won a close won over Air Force, Towson surprised early, but Virginia ended up pulling away for the route. We'll talk about all of these gams and many more, so be sure to watch the full show. — 02x19 Notes — Gtown appears on Bottom of the Smash Mountain to talk about his perspective on running events in New England Melee! Ever go to Mass Madness? We talk a lot about it so you'll either know or know even more by the time we're done talking :D Gtown's Twitter: https://twitter.com/gtown_tom?s=21 The Cheat's video on recent Smash Community news: https://youtu.be/cls3GnmIxUI This is not the original episode 50 btw we're still in process with that one LOL — About the pod — Bottom of the Smash Mountain is a podcast created, hosted, produced, edited, and otherwise run by Jesse “cyfer003” Wall (he/him), aka yours truly. That's right, I even write this whole thing out. A couple of things about me: I love the Super Smash Bros. franchise, especially Melee. My wife, Jen, is my biggest supporter and I would not be here without her. To our two children, Ellie and Ezra, I'm proud to be your Daddy. Jen and I believe in the gospel of Jesus, which declares: “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 ESV As of the beginning of Season 2, this is what my relationship to Melee looks like: I am only a spectator and podcaster. I have no internet at the apartment, so until we move I shall spectate and support via podcasting about Melee and the community. One of my main goals for this podcast is to emulate what I hope to see in the Smash Community at large: a welcoming and safe environment. One example is that I'm not going to swear that much, although my guests might swear slightly more often so that is why this podcast is marked as explicit content, or at least it should be. Anchor is confusing sometimes. The point is, I want listeners and guests alike to feel welcome and safe while they're here, so aside from occasional swearing I will try to limit explicit content to accomplish that. Trigger warnings and heads-up type stuff will be used as I see fit. Don't get your hopes up for time-stamps, because this is a bit of a lazy podcast as well. Despite that, I try my best to give credit where credit is due in regards to sources and such. I also make a concerted effort to avoid ripping other people's content, but if anyone feels that I did that kind of stuff, my DM's are open on Twitter; we can get it figured out. Did I say something that offended you? Usually I am trying not to be offensive to anyone, but my attempts at humor might result in that. Either that or I'm being dumb. Either way, feel free to reach out and educate me so that you and I can level up :) Jesse's Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/cyfer003 BSM Twitter: https://twitter.com/bsmpod?s=21 #BSMPod — Credits — Podcast Logo: original artwork by Blake Wall; used with permission. Georgetown's defense gave up a whopping 5 goals, but despite Mount St Mary's proving they could score more than once where others had failed, the Hoya's still pick up a very lopsided 17-5 win. Jake Carraway was big once again for Gtown going for 5 goals and 2 assists in the win. Alex Mazzone forced 3 turnovers and picked up 7 groundballs to help lead the Hoyas defense. Hofstra beat down Wagner 18-6 and Ryan Tierney continued his outpouring of offense by putting up 6 goals in the win off just 11 shots. Alex Concannon chipped in 3 goals and 2 helpers for the Pride. In yet another lopsided Tuesday win, Robert Morris took it to Bellarmine by a score of 17-8. Ryan Smith went off for 5 goals and 6 assists for Bobby Mo off just 8 shots. In action on Wednesday we'll see Virginia and High Point face off in the early evening. Both teams are coming off blow out losses, UVA's to Syracuse and High Points at the hands of North Carolina. The Cuse midfield also showed in a big way, Brendan Curry, 3 goals and 4 assists, Tucker Dorcevic, 3 goals, Jamie Trimboli, 2 goals, Owen Seebold and Lucas Quinn each went for 2 goals. It was an offensive outpouring for the Orange. UVA's Matt Moore and Dox Aitken were both held scoreless and the rest of Virginia's supporting cast were all quieted by an incredible defensive effort out of Drake Porter and company. Duke is starting to look like what we expected them to on offense as they beat up Air Force at home, 17-7. Michael Sowers showed well in the box score with 8 points off 3 goals and 5 assists. Joe Robertson continued his welcome back party putting up 7 goals and 3 assists in the Blue Devil's win. Rutgers surprised some folks by thrashing Ohio State in The Shoe 22-12. Connor Kirst continued his dominance of Big Ten foes by putting up 4 goals while teammate Adam Charalmbides was good for 5 goals and a dish and Mullins 2 goals and 4 helpers. In other action, Hopkins defeated Michigan on the road 14-7. Joey Epstein went for 6 goals off just 8 shots which was good to see. North Carolina waxed High Point in their second meeting of the season 27-12. Gray and Solomon both went for 4 goals and 3 assists in the beat down. Notre Dame saw their first action in a 19-7 win over Robert Morris, proving that the ACC is not to be messed with. Pat Kavanaugh had a monster day contributing 2 goals and 7 helpers in the win. Georgetown continued their defensive dominance holding yet another team to a single goal. This time St. John's was the team that had to endure the embarrassment. So far over their first two games the Hoyas have outscored their foes 35-2. Jake Carraway was solid for Gtown putting up 3 goals and 3 helpers. On Saturday, March 23 the congregants of several local churches erected a memorial to all those murdered by guns in 2012. The installation in Vernon Park along Germantown avenue features a t-shirt for each victim emblazoned with their name, age and date of death. There were two hundred eighty-eight gun murders in Philadelphia last year. The Northwest Soapbox spoke to the organizers of the installation, a volunteer and the mother of one of those memorialized. The installation in Germantown will be up for two weeks. To learn more about the installation and the organization that created it visit Heedinggodscall.org. The Philadelphia School District released a list last week of schools they plan to close. Germantown High School was on this list. The NW Soapbox visited some of the businesses surrounding the high school to get reactions to the news. While most felt the nearly 100 year old school should be saved few would send their own children there today. They feared closing the school would create many problems from inflated class sizes to neighborhood-based violence. Our final interview was with a senior at Germantown High. Do you have thoughts on what should happen to Germantown High? What should be done to prevent it's closure and turn it around? If it does close what do you think should be done with the property? We'd love to get your opinion. You can reach us at soapbox@gtownradio.com. For almost 100 years Awbury Arboretum has existed as a free resource to the people of NW Philadlephia. On this week's Soapbox we speak to Germantown resident Julie Baranauskus about the blighted property adjoining her home. She and her neighbors in the Penn-Knox neighborhood have fought for years to get this rapidly deteriorating property restored or out of the hands of it's owner, Anthony Byrne. Julie explains how the property has impacted her home and community and why this fight has dragged on so long. The property at 5357 Knox street currently has $6,672.56 in outstanding taxes and liens. A blight law passed in 2011 made each broken or sealed window and door subject to fines of $300 per day. This house currently has 24 such windows and doors. At $300 each that adds up to $7200 a day in fines. If this law was enforced the total fines in July, 2012 would be $223,200. Read more about the city's blight law here: http://articles.philly.com/2011-10-27/news/30328056_1_property-values-vacant-properties-land-bank Want to know what constitutes blight?
