It's been a big month in carbon removal funding news. Climeworks announced $650 million in new fundraising from an extensive group of private equity and investment management firms. Then, Stripe made public a nearly $1 billion plan to take their CDR purchasing program to a new level by partnering with Alphabet, Meta, McKinsey, Shopify, and more to pool their carbon credit dollars and buy removals from companies and facilities that don't even exist yet. This plan was inspired by programs that have developed vaccines with Advanced Market Commitments. Rounding out the month's big funding news was an announcement from climate-focused VC firm Lowercarbon Capital that they've raised $350 million to invest in carbon removal companies. Add that to the 15 $1 million milestone grants given in the first round of the carbon Xprize and the extensive public conversation around carbon removal that's taken place since early April's IPCC mitigation report. There's a lot of news to talk about in the world of carbon removal. Joining Susan and Radhika to talk about all this is Josh Santos, CEO, and Co-Founder of Noya. Josh also gives some updates about Noya's recent progress. A punchy conversation with Josh Santos, the Co-Founder, and CEO of Noya - a carbon capture company offering companies a way to capture carbon and get paid. Their tech is installed on Cooling Towers, captures carbon, and is then able to be sold to companies who use carbon. The new business models that are being developed every day to help make the transition to a cleaner world are very inspiring to me. Check out Noya: https://www.noya.co/Connect with Josh on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshisantos/Join the Slack Channel:  https://cleantechies.slack.com/join/shared_invite/zt-pd2drz6d-N~9nURU5JlyMXv2ZiO5bAQ#/shared-invite/emailSubscribe to the Newsletter: https://www.silasmahner.com/ctnewslettersignupHMU on Twitter: @silasmahnerSupport the show: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/silasmahner_________We are proud to continue working with NextWave as our official show sponsor for this podcast. From building their 1st prototype in their backyard, getting the SF bomb squad sent by the neighbors and being backed by YC and Lower Carbon Capital, discover how Noya is using existing “boring” cooling towers to capture tons of C02.   Ep.#16  Meet the founder series: Josh Santos, Co-founder, and CEO at Noya PART 1: Meet the founder: During this new episode of our Founder series, we are sitting down with Josh Santos, Co-founder, and CEO at Noya, which has developed an exciting and affordable CO2 capture process that utilizes existing industrial equipment, such as “boring” cooling towers to pull CO2 out of the air. Noya then takes the CO2 pulled from the atmosphere and re-packages it for sale to industrial CO2 consumers. I was super excited to speak with Josh and learn more about his story which started at Tesla and Harley Davidson and led to the launch of Noya. You will discover with Josh the Direct Air Capture Tech Landscape today, what's happening in the industry, and then go deeper into their unique and affordable process which opens the road to scale DAC tech- one of the key technologies in the fight against Climate Change. Finally, Josh will share the next steps necessary to achieve their growth and how you can get involved in the process.    PART 2: My secret sauce: During the second part of the talk,  Josh will give his secret sauce for early-stage founders looking to fundraise with famous investors as Lower Carbon Capital or MCJ collective. Finally, he will share some key advice on how to join YC  and his own work-life balance tips for founders.

Led by CEO Josh Santos, Noya is bringing carbon-negative technology to market by retrofitting existing cooling towers to provide no-cost carbon removal technology to large facility managers. The company generates revenue by selling upcycled food-grade carbon dioxide to the beverage industry and has established revenue-sharing agreements with its facility manager partners. To learn more about Noya visit their website. Josh highlighted Noya's mission and capital-light approach to carbon capture and sequestration saying, "Noya's fundamental aim is to combat climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by means of retrofitting existing infrastructure with carbon removal technology. The upfront capital costs of constructing new carbon removal technologies are substantial. Instead, our approach is to retrofit existing industrial cooling towers by adding a chemical blend into the water that sits within these towers. Consequently, this water becomes a sponge that sucks carbon dioxide out of the air. There are two million cooling towers in the United States so we have a lot of work ahead of us." Josh noted two key ingredients in Noya's pitch to facility managers, saying "It has been important to create incentive alignment and appeal to the inherent wants and needs of these facility managers. One of these needs is to improve the sustainability of their facilities. There has been a big push to implement LED lighting and address other forms of low-hanging carbon fruit, but ultimately there is a need to do more. Our retrofit offers a carbon-negative contribution to the larger push to meet sustainability commitments. The second aspect of this incentive alignment has been our business model which requires no capital or operating expenditure from the facilities that we retrofit. Instead, we finance the installation of the equipment and cover operational costs in exchange for getting access to these large carbon sinks. On the back end, we give facility owners 10% of the revenue that we generate from the sale of the consequent carbon dioxide concentrate." Here is the transcript summary of the podcast. -- Entrepreneurs for Impact is the only private mastermind community for investor-backed CEOs, founders, and investors fighting climate change. Today's guests are Josh Santos, Co-Founder & CEO, and Daniel Cavero, Co-Founder & CTO, of Noya.Josh and Daniel met a few years ago when they were roommates in San Francisco. In 2020, they founded Noya together. Noya captures CO2 from the atmosphere and reselling it for half the cost of current options. The company works to retrofit existing industrial equipment to enable carbon capture and resale. When Josh and Daniel broke down the cost of direct air capture systems, they realized a large portion of the cost hinges on one component. Noya is working to reduce this component's cost, allowing for a scalable process that can have a massive impact. Noya aims to capture seven gigatons of carbon emissions with a removal cost that is half the current market price through its proprietary technology.Josh and Daniel are fantastic guests with a great vision. They walk me through how they met, what motivated them to start Noya, and the company's future. Josh and Daniel touch on Noya's timeline and approach for go-to-market, key milestones, and funding to date. We also discuss the problem Noya is tackling, the barriers holding the company back, and direct air capture as a climate solution more broadly.
