This week’s guest is Kelly Stocker. Kimya likes to call her the most famous not famous person in Austin as she is connected to nearly everybody--seriously ask someone in your life if they know Kelly. She honed this title when she was the Austin community manager of Yelp, and now she’s a gal who does a bit of this and a bit of that. And she’s also a DJ on a local radio station KGSR which is where we’re recording from right now and she writes for the local branch of Culturemap. Oh, and she has a funny and informative newsletter called the Friday Five that you should all subscribe to.

The soulful voice of Austin-based R&B, soul and pop singer-songwriter Lauren Silva leads listeners to wonder how someone so young can sing of life so authentically. But with a career that began with singing, dancing, and acting at the age of five and now includes touring nation-wide and writing and producing her own music and videos, she has a lifetime of experience. And still there's something more behind the perfect pitch tone she passionately belts out. In the midst of a successful childhood career that included dancing, acting, singing and modeling, the tragic death of her best friend and cast mate led her to years of challenges with substance issues and gang influence. Extracting herself by sheer inner strength and her spiritual practices she poured herself into her passion for creating and performing with amazing results. Not content to simply perform and take a bow, Lauren uses her experiences to inspire and mentor youth throughout the country by working with organizations assisting inner city youth, the homeless and human trafficking coalitions. After an initial album with an independent label in her native California at the age of 18, Lauren grew into her own as an R&B, soul and pop artist, most recently expanding into writing and co-writing for herself and other major artists alongside several American and international teams with Sony and Universal. Vocally compared to a mix between pop sensations, Adele, Pink and Alicia Keys, she has been gaining major label, publishing, and music licensing interest with her previous EP, which garnered airplay in Austin, New York and Canada, and recently recorded EP.Lauren has toured nationally performing in venues ranging from sold-out shows at the Cox Arena to renowned Austin venues such as Antone's, the Saxon Pub and Threadgill's opening for five-time Grammy-nominated artist Marcia Ball. She has opened for established recording artists such as P.O.D., Kirk Franklin, L.F.O., and has worked with a growing number of well-respected musicians such as Lester Abrams (writer of “Minute By Minute” of Doobie Brothers), Traa (Bass player for P.O.D.) Tomi Aros (Luis Miguel, Santana), Kiko Cibrian (Santana), Carl Evans J.R. (Fattburger, Stevie Wonder) and more.Though her journey began in Southern California, Lauren's Portuguese heritage led her to Hawaii where, in addition to continuing to write and perform music, she also did missionary work. While there, she collaborated with the Grammy award-winning Carrie Underwood and can be seen singing next to Underwood in the opening scene of the major motion film “Soul Surfer.”In 2012 her original single “Hurt,” was nominated for Best Pop Song in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards where she performed to great reviews. “Hurt” was placed on TV's Oxygen Network amongst rotating network shows and earned her first radio play in New York, Canada and charting on local radio in Austin, TX claiming the number one spot on R&B/Soul station KAZI for over six weeks in a row. Followed by her song “Shadow,” which also claimed the number one spot on KAZI and has also been nominated for Best R&B/Soul Song of the Year for the 2013 Hollywood Music in Media Awards. She is currently getting more radio play all over Austin, TX including the very popular KGSR radio station with her new self produced EP "Back to Bridges" which released in June of this year. She also recently had two of her original songs licensed for a pilot for an HBO Television Series. In 2013 Lauren is back in the studio in Los Angeles, CA working with Pop Billboard charting producer Mario Marchetti on a full length album. She is also working with an Los Angeles-based film director, writing for a major films.

We are pleased to bring back Jimmy Lafave and a secret mystery guest, lover of Barton Springs in from Vermont. (See videos of Jimmy here) The last few years we’ve been in the studio with Jimmy, recording a cut with him on his Jackson Browne Tribute album, and two songs on his most recent album release.  Back in the 80’s my high school best friend and I would take our strings downtown and sit in at the Chicago House open mike frequently hosted by Jimmy Lafave.  Years later I ran into Jimmy at a live KGSR radio tribute to Bob Dylan; from that radio show the first season of  Strings Attached was born. Here are a few songs I arranged for that first show back in 2001:Never is a MomentWhen It Starts to Rain (KUT Radio Appearance)Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe.
