Shortly after he recorded “Peggy Day” — exactly 56 years ago today, in fact, an appropriate choice for Valentine's Day! — Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone magazine, “I kind of had The Mills Brothers in mind when I did that one.”A laugh was shared by Dylan and RS Editor Jann Wenner over that thought. However, the remark later really would resonate in the world of The Flood, which has taken much musical inspiration from The Mills Brothers, on everything from “Up a Lazy River” and “Lulu's Back in Town” to “Am I Blue?” and “Opus One.”In other words, Floodsters heard in Bob's little-loved love song a kind of pastiche of the 1930s and ‘40s, its rhythms recalling that era's classic swing thing.StepchildStill, "Peggy Day" remains one of the stepchildren in the Dylan oeuvre. In fact, the tune's only claim to fame is that it was the B-side when Bob released "Lay, Lady, Lay" as a hit single in the summer of '69. Unlike a lot of Dylan songs, "Peggy Day" has no intriguing backstory or associated legend, no deep, nuanced lyrics to invite exegesis by college graduate seminars. As a result, some Dylanologists seem to actually hate the tune. “Frankly, embarrassing,” Clinton Heylin once said of it, while Billboard magazine was even cheekier about the entire Nashville Skyline album from which it came: “The satisfied man speaks in clichés,” the magazine purred with a pucker.Shout-Out to The FloodNo wonder “Peggy Day” is so seldom performed by other artists. A few years ago, Tony Attwood started covering Dylan covers in a series of articles for his fascinating Untold Dylan web site. When Tony turned to “Peggy Day,” he located only one non-Dylan recording of the song: The Flood's version on its 2013 Cleanup & Recovery album.Attwood was complementary of The Flood's performance on the album, which featured the call-and-response vocals by Charlie Bowen and Michelle Hoge. (Click here to hear it, complete with solos by Sam St. Clair, Dave Peyton and Doug Chaffin.)“It's a jolly bit of fun,” Attwood wrote, “which shows this is certainly a song that has cover possibilities — in terms of a second vocalist — the harmonies in the middle 8 are gorgeous as is the instrumental break.”A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' from The VaultActually, a decade before that the song almost made it onto an earlier Flood album. “Peggy Day” was among the dozens of numbers the band recorded during a 10-hour marathon studio session with the late, great George Walker, an evening that yielded 2003's I'd Rather Be Flooded. The tune didn't make the cut for the album, but since things don't get thrown away much around here, the rendition has been patiently passing its time in The Flood Files, just waiting for this moment to arise.Click the button below to hear this archival “Peggy Day” treatment with Sam's harmonica and Charlie's vocals along with a bevy of late Flood tribal elders, including Joe Dobbs on fiddle, Chuck Romine on tenor banjo, Dave Peyton on Autoharp and Doug Chaffin on bass:Our 2025 Take on the TuneSo, this bit of fluff from Bob's fat and happy country squire days of the late 1960s is one of his least-recorded song, but The Flood obviously has always enjoyed playing it over the decades. Here's a joyous take on the tune from a recent rehearsal, featuring solos from everyone in the room, Danny and Randy, Sam and Jack. Happy Valentine's Day, dear ones! And Speaking of Love…Finally, if you'd like a little more Flood in your day of love, remember The Valentine Blend playlist in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. Johnny Cash had a long-time affinity for the work of — and for his friendship with — Bob Dylan. In his book Cash: The Autobiography, Johnny wrote of being on the road in the early ‘60s. “I had a portable record player that I'd take along on the road, and I'd put on Freewheelin' Bob Dylan backstage, then go out and do my show, then listen again as soon as I came off.“After a while at that, I wrote Bob a letter telling him how much of a fan I was,” he said. “He wrote back almost immediately, saying he'd been following my music since I Walk the Line, and so we began a correspondence.” The two finally met in person during the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. They remained close friends for the remaining 40 years of John's life. When his friend died in 2003, Dylan wrote, “In plain terms, Johnny was — and is — the North Star; you could guide your ship by him, the greatest of the greats, then and now.”“Truly he is what the land and country is all about,” continued Dylan, “the heart and soul of it personified and what it means to be here; and he said it all in plain English. I think we can have recollections of him, but we can't define him, any more than we can define a fountain of truth, light and beauty.”Despite their mutual admiration, Dylan and Cash collaborated only one time. That was on Dylan's landmark 1969 recording of the Nashville Skyline album, produced by Bob Johnston.Johnston also had produced Cash's At Folsom Prison the year earlier, and he hoped he could get the two artists to record an entire album together. To that end, Cash and Dylan recorded 15 songs together at the Nashville sessions, but ended up keeping only one of those tracks, “Girl from the North Country.”About This SongAmong those 15 tracks was one of Cash's all-time favorite Dylan compositions, the wistful “One Too Many Mornings,” which Bob wrote for his third studio album, The Times They Are a-Changin'.As noted here recently, the song was famously among a series of tunes Dylan wrote after his breakup with his lover Suze Rotolo. After its album release in 1964, the song sometimes pops up on Dylan's set lists, notably during his 1966 world tour and then, 10 years later, in his second Rolling Thunder Revue tour. But Johnny Cash embraced the song even more, covering it numerous times, including on the album Johnny & June in 1978.He recorded it again in 1986 as a duet with Waylon Jennings for their Heroes album. In 2012, a remix combining Cash's original vocals with new recordings by the Avett Brothers was included on the benefit album Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International.Meanwhile, Johnny and Waylon's vocals on that original Heroes rendition later were augmented by Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson when the four of them created the supergroup The Highwaymen in the 1990s.Our Take on the TuneCharlie Bowen started doing this song back in college to have something to sing and play to the jam sessions in the dorms. It then was one of the songs Charlie brought along in that summer and fall of 1974 when Dave Peyton, Roger Samples and he started The Flood. And this lonely, lovely Dylan tune is still welcome at Flood gatherings, as you can heard on this track from last week's rehearsal.Want More Bob?By the way, if you'd like a little more Dylan in your diet, The Flood has an entire Bob-centric playlist set in up the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. In the winter of 1969, Bob Dylan arrived in Tennessee with only four songs completed for his Nashville Skyline recording sessions. Over the next few days at the Columbia studio and in his rooms at the Ramada Inn, he composed another five pieces, including this stunning tune that he used as the album's closing track.“Tonight I'll be Staying Here with You” was the third single to be released from Nashville Skyline (after “I Threw It All Away” and “Lay Lady Lay.”) It reached #50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the top 20 in other countries.Critical response was positive. Cash Box said that, unlike previous Dylan singles, "this ballad is honed to a fine edge and further sharpened through excellent production touches.” Record World concurred, calling it “another classic from the master.”MilestoneDylanologists, meanwhile, found the song insightful, because the lyrics seemed to mark a change from the angst of Bob's earlier love songs, many of which told of restless searches. In contrast, "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" finds Dylan devoted to his lover and willing to settle down (at least for the nonce). Some fans waxed poetic at the thought of Bob as a family man, happy to be quietly living with Sara and the kids.Dylan himself seemed to like that image. Soon after Nashville Skyline's release, he told Rolling Stone‘s Jann Wenner, “I was on the road for almost five years. It wore me down. I was on drugs, a lot of things. … I don't want to live that way anymore.” TrainsTrain imagery, by the way, runs throughout the song. But unlike his earlier lyrics, in this song, even though he "can hear that whistle blowin'," he wants to "throw my ticket out the window" and let "a poor boy on the street" have his seat.On the album, the song showcases Dylan's then-new smooth country croon between twangy guitar fills. A more raucous version, though, became a live highlight a few years later when Bob was — yes — back on the road with the Rolling Thunder Revue. Our Take on the TuneThere's a reason why The Flood's rendition of this Dylan classic sounds different from Bobby's version (or from anyone else's take on the tune, for that matter). That's because back in the early 1980s, when Roger and Charlie started playing around with opening chord progression here, they thought they were writing an original song of their own. But then Rog and the Samples family moved away — leaving West Virginia for the green hills of Kentucky — and the piece they were working on was left an orphan. It didn't even have a name or the first hints of a lyric. Only a year or so later, when Charlie was noodling with it during the warmup at a jam session, did Dave Peyton say, “Hey, you know what? If you tweaked the chords a bit and added the bridge, you could sing that Dylan thing over that!” Right there and then an arrangement was born, and we've been playing it like this ever since.Meanwhile….By the way, if you'd like more Floodified Dylan tunes, check out this special playlist we constructed for Bobby's birthday a Spring or two ago: This is a public episode. Och vilket slags väska hade „the Rolling Stones“ i sinnet, när de år 1971 framförde: “Well, I followed her to the station, with my suitcase in my hand”, i en låt som bär titeln “Love in Vain” och som ursprungligen sjöngs av bluesmusikern Robert Johnson?

In the recently released Travel + Leisure rankings of "The 24 Best New Luxury City Hotels Around the World,” readers likely nodded at Xenodocheio Milos in Athens.; however, #2 was likely to come as something of a surprise: Four Seasons Hotel Nashville.  In the words of Travel + Leisure, “It wasn't that long ago that a pairing of the Four Seasons and Nashville would've seemed unlikely.  But times have changed for both the iconic hotel brand and Music City.” The Four Seasons Nashville is not just a luxury hotel, however.  The tower also has 144 private residence, luxury condominums.  Many local real estate observers were skeptical that Nashville had a deep enough luxury market to support this sort of project, a project where a handful of units had listing prices in the eight figure ranges.  Spoiler alert—all the Four Seasons Residences were sold before construction was even complete.   So, how was Four Seasons persuaded to plant a flag in Nashville, and how did Nashville attract Four Seasons? On this very special episode of Climbing the Charts, we sit down with Dean Stratouly.  He's the CEO of the Congress Group, based in Boston, and has been, for almost a decade now, the driving force behind the answers to those questions.  Dean shares with us how he went from selling nuclear power plants to developing skyline shaping properties – like the Four Seasons Nashville.  And Dean isn't done in Nashville; he's just getting started.  Dean offers unvarnished takes on today's real estate market, explains how Nashville can ensure better and smarter development, and offers his assessment of the current state of Music City: “I'm as bullish on Nashville today as I was seven years ago when I got here. It continues to have all the potential, more potential than just about any other market that I've seen in the last three or four years.” Join us for a conversation that will raise your real estate IQ and inspire you as to what's possible on one's professional journey, including the role of chance encounters and self-manufactured luck.

In this episode of Rock is Lit, Richard Fulco, author of the new novel ‘We Are All Together', is here to take us on a rockin' jaunt through the late 1960s, where we'll encounter several iconic players on the music and literature scene from that era. If you're a fan of the Summer of Love and all the trimmings that go with it, you'll love his novel and this episode. Later, Elliott Landy drops by to talk even more about the 1960s music scene, a period he should know a lot about since he's been photographing rock stars since the mid-60s. Best known for his classic rock photographs, Elliott Landy was one of the first music photographers to be recognized as an “artist.” His celebrated works include album cover photographs for Bob Dylan's ‘Nashville Skyline', The Band's ‘Music From Big Pink' and ‘The Band' album, and Van Morrison's ‘Moondance'. He's also taken portraits of such rock icons as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. He was the official photographer of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. And . . . Front Row joins Radio 4's celebration of Bob Dylan, who will be 80 on Monday. John Wilson joined by Bob Geldof, to consider the art and influence of Bob, on Bob. Ann Powers, music critic for National Public Radio joins from somewhere on the Nashville Skyline. On Bob Dylan's first trip to Britain, in the winter of 1962, he and the great English folk singer Martin Carthy, met, became friends and performed together in small clubs such as the Troubadour (still going!). Bob Dylan acknowledges the influence of Carthy, whose versions of Scarborough Fair and Lord Franklin, for instance, inform songs of his such as Bob Dylan's Dream and Girl From the North Country. It will be Martin's 80th birthday on Friday, he's three days older than Dylan. Front Row drags him away from his celebration (and a rehearsal - Carthy, like Dylan, is still a hardworking musician) to remember those early days, and a winter so cold he and Bob chopped up an old piano for firewood. Kerry Shale stars with Richard Curtis, Lucas Hare and Eileen Atkins in Dinner with Dylan, the afternoon drama on Radio 4 on Saturday. Shale,a famously versatile voice actor, is intrigued by Dylan's voice and how it has changed or, rather, he has changed it. Using songs recorded over decades Kerry analyses how folky young Bob becomes hip, sneery Bob, then mellow country Bob, dangerous angry Bob finally exhausted Ancient Mariner Bob. 'I Contain Multitudes', Dylan says, using the famous phrase of Walt Whitman as the title of one of his songs. Poet Caroline Bird does some close reading of 'Visions of Johanna' and the writer Fred D'Aguiar, esonance of Dylan's early work in the wake of the murder of George Floyd Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May

Well, shoot, more than just going strong, these octogenarians-to-be are both still finding new ideas and inspiring everybody around them to do the same. For instance, check this out. To celebrate this momentous year, last night we dusted off this old Bob Dylan tune off the great “Nashville Skyline” album of 50 years ago. Listen how right from the start, Doug’s guitar work prompts his bandmates — first, Veezy Coffman, then Sam St. Clair — to find interesting new nooks and crannies in their own solos.

Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

Remfry and Steve are looking at another big artist, as they delve into Bob Dylan's 10th studio album Self Portrait (originally aired on https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/89-a-blanket-of-nihilism/id1417888519?i=1000471741113 (Riot Act #89) 17th April 2020). Released 8th June 1970, Self Portrait was Dylan's second double album (after Blonde on Blonde), and features many cover versions of well-known pop and folk songs. Also included are a handful of instrumentals and original compositions. Most of the album is sung in the affected country crooning voice that Dylan had introduced a year earlier on Nashville Skyline. Seen by some as intentionally surreal and even satirical at times, Self Portrait received extremely poor reviews.

Dawn [07:48] "Candida" Greatest Hits Arista AL-4045 1975 This first outing from Tony Orlando and Dawn reached number 3 on the Hot 100 in 1970. Webb Pierce [10:53] "I Ain't Never" Greatest Hits MCA Records MCA-120 1968 Legend has it that Mel Tillis traded crediting Webb as a co-writer on this number for a pair of boots that Pierce was wearing at the time. Webb's 1959 version made it to number 2 on the country charts. In 1972, Tillis' version (https://youtu.be/S8npzNIbF14) made it to number 1. Diana Ross [14:32] "Upside Down" All the Greatest Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 A great tune penned for Ms. Ross by Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. Made it to number 1 on the charts of course. I dig the guitar work on the outro. Sly & the Family Stone [18:38] "Sing a Simple Song" Greatest Hits Epic KE 30325 1970 The b-side from the all killer no filler 1968 Sly single "Everyday People". War [22:35] "The Cisco Kid" Greatest Hits United Artists Records UA-LA648-G 1976 One of my favorite songs when I was a kid, and I still love it. Definitely an irresistable hook. Made it all the way up to number 2 on the Hot 100, but was held out of the number one spot by... Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". Willie Nelson [26:20] "Good Hearted Woman" Greatest Hits (& Some that Will Be) Columbia KC2 37542 1981 Waylon Jennings wrote this inspired by a newspaper piece about Tina Turner's relationship with Ike. Purportedly written by Jennings and Nelson over a poker game. Jenning's version is quite excellent (https://youtu.be/bU7hic-KtVw). Petula Clark [30:37] "Call Me" Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 Warner Bros - Seven Arts Records WS1765 1968 Pretty snappy for what would become an Easy Listening standard. ABBA [33:24] "The Name of the Game" Greatest Hits, Vol 2 Atlantic SD 16009 1979 Not sure why I like the more dramatic ABBA songs like this (https://youtu.be/iJ90ZqH0PWI) and "Knowing Me, Knowing You (https://youtu.be/iUrzicaiRLU)", but I do. This one made it to number 12 on the Hot 100. The bass intro was inspired Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" (https://youtu.be/c7IYSAUj78g). Conway Twitty [38:13] "Hello Darlin'" Greatest Hits Vol. I MCA Records MCA-52 1972 (1973 reissue) Long associated with Conway Twitty, this single stayed at the top of the country charts for four weeks in the summer of 1970. Bob Dylan [40:38] "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" Greatest Hits Volume II Columbia KG 31120 1971 The third single released from his 1969 album Nashville Skyline. Some pretty hot guitar licks. Elton John [45:57] "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" Greatest Hits Volume II MCA Records MCA-3027 1977 Released in 1974 and topping the pop charts in January of 1975, this Beatles cover features John Lennon himself joining in on guitar and backing vox under the pseudonym Winston O'Boogie. I am pretty sure was the first version I heard as a kid, thanks to pop radio. Definitely recall the Univibe guitar opening and the synth lead in the middle, and the odd but awesome reggae break. Marty Robbins [51:47] "El Paso" The Greatest Hits Columbia C2X-3 Please enjoy this Dudley (aka H.B. Barnum) spoof (https://youtu.be/-EVP_ISgPNk) of this 1959 song. Johnny Cash [56:27] "It Ain't Me, Babe" Greatest Hits Volume 1 Columbia CL 2678 1967 Great admirers of each other, Cash recorded this Dylan song for his 1965 Orange Blossom Special with June Carter helping out on vocals. Their single made it to number 4 in the country charts. Trini Lopez [59:29] "La Bamba" Greatest Hits! Reprise Records R 6226 1966 A live version from 1963 of this traditional Mexican folk song, non-traditionally credited to Lopez which would normally be credited as traditional. Perhaps it's due to Lopez's Beatles-esque break in the middle of the arrangement. Music behind the DJ: "Theme from a Summer Place" by Percy Faith & his Orchestra

When Bob Dylan wrote this song 50 years ago, it was a matter of necessity. In the winter of ’69, he had arrived at the Columbia Records studio to record the great “Nashville Skyline” album having written only four of the songs he’d need to fill that record. So, over the next two days at the Ramada Inn where he was staying for the recording session, Bob wrote “Tonight I’ll be Staying Here with You,” a piece that worked so well it ended up being the beautiful final cut of the  album. In many ways, it was the signature tune for that whole project. The Flood started playing around with the song back in the ‘70s when Rog Samples and Charlie worked out this particular arrangement, and it seems to come back into our collective consciousness ever few decades or so. Here’s a ride we all took on that Dylan train at last night’s rehearsal.

Off the Grid - Doin' It Dylan. The Legend Of Wooley Swamp". Escuchar audio

There are numerous super-session musicians in Nashville, but very few with the longevity of West Virginia native Charlie McCoy. In addition to being a fixture in Nashville studios for over five decades, he has recorded almost 40 solo albums, and served as the music director for eighteen years for the syndicated television series, “Hee Haw”. Charlie became one of the in-demand session players in Nashville. His session credits are literally a who’s who of country music. For a fifteen-year stretch, he did more than 400 sessions a year. A grand total would number more than 12,000. (and he’s still going) In the last twenty years, he has been touring more with many appearances in Europe and Japan. In addition to country sessions, Charlie was a mainstay on Elvis Presley recordings both in Nashville and Los Angeles. When Bob Dylan recorded “Highway 61”, “Blond On Blond”, “John Wesley Harding”, and “Nashville Skyline”, Charlie was there, playing on these landmark recordings. He was also heard on Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”.  He won a Grammy in 1972 for his album, “The Real McCoy” and in 2009, Charlie was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame along with Roy Clark and Barbara Mandrell.  Charlie still performs and records today, all over the world; he says "if you need a harp, I'm still harpin'!" Dr. Court Carney returns to the podcast to talk about Bob Dylan. Court is not only a fan, he has taught a class on Dylan at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he is a professor history.  Court's interest in Dylan began when he listened to his dad's copy of Nashville Skyline thirty years ago. In grad school, he took a deeper dive into the Zimmerman catalog by absorbing such classics as Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, and John Wesley Harding. Court has also been fascinated by the Dylan-Guthrie connection, which has taken him to archives in Tulsa to examine Guthrie's personal papers. Guthrie died in 1967, by which time Dylan had retreated to Woodstock, NY, to recover and reconceptualize his art and music. While in Woodstock, Dylan began recording with The Band. What emerged was a new kind of American roots music. In a country founded on legends and self-made men, Court and Colin examine the myth vs. reality of Dylan. They also tackle such questions as: how political was he? Is his Christmas album worth listening to? Was he really seriously injured in a motorcycle crash? And is "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35" a drug song? Dr. Carney explains all!

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist goes long and deep with famous Woodstock photographer, Elliott Landy on his time with The Band, a little on shooting Bob Dylan for the ‘Nashville Skyline' cover and Van Morrison's ‘Moondance' cover.  Elliott has a new crowd-source project through Kickstarter he is hoping to get off the ground. The new book will be called ‘Contacting the Band', a follow up to his 2016 book, ‘The Band' 1968-1969 about his two years working with the Americana godfathers. Elliott Landy's new book, Contacting The Band, will feature selected contact sheets of the photos I took of THE BAND in the late Sixties for their first two albums, Music From Big Pink and The Band. It will allow fans of THE BAND a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the process and frame by frame progression of these landmark photo shoots, including personal sessions with the guys at home and on the road.It will be the companion to my previous book, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969, published in 2015 with the support of a Kickstarter campaign. which became its highest funded photography book at that time. It will be the same size (12 x 12 inches) with the same high quality printing and heavyweight paper, and will fit beautifully alongside the first volume on your bookshelf or coffee table. Contact Sheets are photographic prints made from all the photos in a single roll of black and white film. The 35mm film I used had 36 photos in each roll. After developing, the film was cut into strips of 6 frames and placed on top of a sheet of 8x10 inch photographic paper with heavy glass on top to keep them flat. Once exposed to light, an image was created of each frame along with the film's sprocket holes and frame numbers.  Since the photos were too small to see clearly, photographers used special magnifying glasses to mark the frames they thought were the best. Today that selection process is done on a computer screen.Elliott Landy, born in 1942, began photographing the anti-Vietnam war movement and the underground music culture in New York City in 1967. Information on this episode's guest: From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels ( https://www.charliedaniels.com/bio ). An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 81, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin’ Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing on the Youngbloods’ Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. In this birthday special UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the first year of the podcast, the weekly contributions photographers have made, the themes that have developed, the importance of 'having a go' and the 'personal' in photography. Plus this week photographer Elliott Landy takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and The Baruch College of the City University of New York Elliott Landy began his photographic career working with Underground newspapers in support of the rising tide of anti-war sentiment throughout the United States during the late 1960s. His press pass and camera not only gave him access to the political scene but also provided him a personal entry into the new rock music counterculture. Albert Grossman who managed the careers of many of the most popular and successful performers of folk and rock music including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Peter, Paul and Mary, Richie Havens and The Band had seen Elliott's images of Janis Joplin and invited him to photograph The Band in Woodstock, photographs that were used on their iconic Music From Big Pink album. During this time, Elliott met Bob Dylan and his photo of him appeared on the cover of the September 1968 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. Within the next few years his celebrated images included portraits of Bob Dylan for his album Nashville Skyline, Janis Joplin for the Big Brother & The Holding Company album Cheap Thrills, Van Morrison for the album Moondance, alongside images of  Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Joan Baez, Eric Clapton, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker and many others. His iconic photographs of Dylan and The Band during the years they resided and recorded in the small arts colony of Woodstock, NY and his coverage of the 1969 Woodstock Festival became synonymous with the town, and the famed 1969 Music Festival. Since 1967 Elliott's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and published on the covers of major US and international magazines and newspapers including the New York Times, Life, Rolling Stone and the Saturday Evening Post. He is the author of eight books including his latest monograph, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969 which was the highest funded photographic book in Kickstarter history. In 1997 Landy began a syndicated column and website to recommend positive life-affirming films and films with strong, loving, accomplished woman as protagonists. He has created a new interactive music and video App, LandyVision, which lets the user blend still and video imagery with music to create a new form of musical and visual experience. After years of metaphysical observation, Landy developed and offers 'Sharing Stillness' Meditations, in which he transmits a spiritual (non-physical) energy that enables one to quickly reach a deep, meditative state. https://elliottlandy.com You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 on Player FM https://player.fm/series/a-photographic-life and Podbean www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/i6uqx-6d9ad/A-Photographic-Life-Podcast Grant Scott is the founder/curator of the United Nations of Photography, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Jude Rogers, Guardian music critic and interviewer, shares her thoughts with Kerry while Luke is in rehearsals. She tells of growing up with The Smiths and REM, “terrified” of the “intimidating” man who “influenced all of pop music” until she discovers the “non-intimidating” Bob on Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait. Jude eventually realises that “Bob Dylan was all these different people” and begins to see the light. An interview she conducts with Mavis Staples seals the deal, complimented by a Dylan playlist from a trusted friend. Jude Rogers was reviews editor for The Word magazine. In addition to The Guardian, she writes for The Observer, The New Statesman, The Times and Financial Times as well as Red, Elle and Marie Claire. Jude broadcasts on BBC Radio and is a senior lecturer in journalism at London Metropolitan University. Trailer Twitter @juderogers Listeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the legendary session harmonica maestro and multi-instrumentalist, Charlie McCoy. Charlie is perhaps the definitive Nashville session musician, a multi-talented performer best known for his harmonica playing and whose mastery of the instrument virtually defined its role within the context of modern country music. By the mid-'60s, McCoy was a fixture on Elvis Presley's Nashville and Los Angeles sessions, and in 1965, he began working with Bob Dylan, appearing on a string of legendary LPs that included Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, and Nashville Skyline. As a result, McCoy became as much in demand among rock and folk artists as he was within the Nashville community and recorded with the likes of Ringo Starr, Al Kooper, Roy Orbison, Simon and Garfunkel, and Gordon Lightfoot. At his peak, he was performing on over 400 sessions annually. Charlie is still very active around Nashville and was generous enough to spend some time talking with me about his incredible history. Enjoy my conversation with Charlie McCoy, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

The band's latest release, "Off the Grid - Doin' It Dylan," features 10 Bob Dylan songs by the CDB, and is their first CDB studio release since 2007. “I love what I do,” says Charlie of his 50-plus years in the music business. “I look forward to entertaining people. When show time gets here, I'm ready to go, ready to go play for them. It's a labor of love. I just thank God I make a living at what I enjoy doing.”-2- Whether performing in the hit 80s movie Urban Cowboy, singing on Easter Sunday at his local church or leading an all-star cast at one of his famed Volunteer Jams, Charlie just exudes joy whenever he steps on stage and he's always been quick to provide a platform for other artists to shine. In 1974 he invited some friends to join him at Nashville's War Memorial Auditorium for an all-star concert he dubbed The Volunteer Jam. The event continued for years and was broadcast in the U.S. and internationally. Over the years, the Jam featured a diverse line up that included Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Crystal Gayle, James Brown, Emmylou Harris, Amy Grant, George Thorogood, Kris Kristofferson, Little Richard, Tammy Wynette, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers. As diverse as his live shows have always been, his discography has also reflected Charlie's love of multiple genres. In 1994 he released his first Christian album, The Door, on Sparrow Records. The album won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Best Country Album and “Two Out of Three” was named video of the year by the Christian Country Music Association. In 1997, Sony Wonder released Charlie's first children's album, “By The Light of The Moon: Campfire Songs and Cowboy Tunes'. An astute businessman as well as talented musician, Charlie launched Blue Hat Records in 1997 with his longtime personal manager David Corlew. Over the past 15 years, the label has released such memorable albums as Blues Hat, Tailgate Party, Road Dogs, Fiddle Fire: 25 Years of the Charlie Daniels Band and his first bluegrass album 2005's Songs From the Longleaf Pines and 2007's album Deuces, featuring duets with Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Bonnie Bramlett, Travis Tritt, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill,...

Singer, songwriter, and musician Renee Maskin (lowlightnj.bandcamp.com) joins Bill and Brian to discuss Bob Dylan's country-tinged Nashville Skyline (1969, Columbia). After becoming a historical icon in the progressive folk movement of the 60s, Dylan broke huge after "going electric" and embracing rock and other popular music. Tired of the spotlight, Dylan took some time off after a motorcycle accident sidelined him a while. He took that opportunity to revamp his sound too, culminating in this classic that eschews his usual rambling lyrics and froggy voice in favor of simple melodies and a lilting vocal tone. Renee, Brian, and Bill discuss Dylan's arrangements, his role as a historical figure, the sound of contentment on this record, arranging in the studio, George Harrison's influence and vice versa, the cult of personality around Dylan and how he interacts with fans, how Dylan maintained his fame without radio hits, and (as always) a track by track review!

He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe. Humbling to think that even the greatest musical legends have their own personal icons – as proven with the much anticipated new release by CHARLIE DANIELS and The CDB — Off The Grid—Doin’ It Dylan. The project is produced by Charlie Daniels and Casey Wood. Little could Charlie Daniels have imagined in the late ‘60’s as a young studio musician answering a call from producer Bob Johnston to add his creativity on guitar to three of Dylan’s Nashville produced projects (Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait, and New Morning,) that he was on the first steps of the journey to his own destination as a musical icon. His first new album project release since 2007, Off The Grid is Dylan the Daniels way and the result is sheer musical genius.   “Whatever it was Bob Dylan meant by his lyrics, they grabbed the attention of the world and changed the face of music forever,” notes Charlie. “He inspired musicians to knock down the restrictive, bubble gum, three minute a side, Tin Pan Alley world that set the parameters of popular music and turn their creative minds loose in a thousand new directions.”   Charlie Daniels has managed to do just that. During his 50 plus years of creating his own new definitions of music, he has scored hits on rock, country, pop and Christian charts. Skilled on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin, his contributions to country and southern rock are legendary on the path of platinum that’s carried him to virtually every music industry award and accolade presented across multi-genres. Off The Grid is yet another example of the seemingly endless reservoirs of musical creativity that the now 77 year young Daniels can effortlessly draw upon.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was written by George Harrison, first recorded by the Beatles in 1968 for The White Album. The song features Harrison on his J-200 acoustic guitar (the one Dylan holds on the cover Nashville Skyline?) and - possibly his Fender Telecaster. Lead guitar is by Eric Clapton on his Gibson Les Paul, nick-named 'Lucy'. Harrsion acquired Lucy from Clapton in August 1968, so Clapton 'borrowed' his old guitar to record WMGGW in September. Lucy shipped from the Gibson factory on December 19th 1957; at some point, it came in the posesssion of John Sebastian (Loving Spoonful), who sold it to Derringer (McCoys, Steely Dan). Derringer had it painted red, didn't like it red, and traded it in a Manhatten guitar shop. There, Eric Clapton bought it. Later, Harrison gave it to Pete Ham (Badfinger) and Lucy travelled a bit, but is now back in the Harrison estate. Paul McCartney exceptionally plays a Fender Jazz Bass. Lennon may have played piano and guitar. This provides a sound scape that is unique in the Beatles catalogue. This instrumental remix demonstrates how Clapton (playing Lucy) takes command of the song, both in the 'rythm' guitar performances, as well as in the legendary solo. McCartney seems bent on not giving in to Clapton, by playing his ultraheavy Fender bass and really making the max of it. Note that Lennon doubles the interesting bass riff during the 'middle eight' here; in subsequent solo/Harrison performancs of the song, Harrison did not include this riff anymore. Reminded him of McCartney ? (and for the truly interested: Gibson now make a 'Lucy' Les Paul, sold for around $15000.........) if you want so see how Clapton did I, then watch this excellent cover by the Analogues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_8ZvdIAR2Y
