“An artist is an ordinary person who can take ordinary things and make them special,” said San Francisco artist Ruth Asawa. From her studio in her home in Noe Valley, Asawa created crocheted wire sculptures whose shadows are just as evocative as the art itself. But as the mother of six, Asawa was also passionate about arts education and teaching. As a new retrospective of her work and life opens at SF MOMA, we talk about Asawa's legacy as an artist, teacher, and community member as part of our Bay Area Legends series. Guests: Janet Bishop, Thomas Weisel Family chief curator, SFMOMA; She co-curated the exhibition Ruth Asawa: Retrospective Terry Kochanski, executive director, SCRAP Andrea Jepson, close friend of Ruth Asawa; Jepson served as the model for the fountain "Andrea" in Ghiradelli Square, and also worked with Asawa on her public school education projects Learn more about your ad choices. There are many ways to write patent claims. One way is called a Jepson-style patent claim, where you explicitly admit what is not inventive about your claim, and then state the part or parts that are inventive. It's not named after the singer named Carly Rae Jepsen, but what if Carly Rae Jepsen wanted to patent a method to get a crush to fall in love with her by using the techniques used in her hit song from 2011, "Call Me Maybe"? How would she go about writing her patent claims in the Jepson style of claim drafting? And how would those Jepson-style claims be different compared to the traditional way that patent claims are written in the United States? Listen to this episode to find out! In Richard Hoggart's classic book 'The Uses of Literacy', he describes the scenes in May 1934 when Hunslet returned triumphantly with the Rugby League Challenge Cup followed by thousands of young boys. Harry Jepson (1920-2016) was one of those youths. This is an interview I did with him in 2009 about his extraordinary life in rugby league. Born in Hunslet at the start of the 1920s, Harry became a teacher while at the same time serving as secretary of Hunslet RLFC, before moving to Leeds to become a key figure at Headingley in the 1970s and 1980s. His list of achievements and honours in the game are far too extensive to list here but his Wikipedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Jepson) does justice to his life. It's a long listen at 100 minutes but entirely worth it for anyone with an interest in rugby league or the social history of Leeds and Hunslet.
Hayley Jepson (@the.resilient.hairdresser on Instagram) has an amazing story. A top-earning colorist, she left the hair industry over a decade ago due to burnout, thinking she'd never come back. Hayley became a school counselor and a psychotherapist. Eventually, the knowledge she gained in that process brought her back to her first love -- hairdressing -- but this time with the tools to lead a healthy, happy life behind the chair. With her company The Resilient Hairdresser, Hayley provides online education and workshops for salons and stylists. She also developed a mental health training currently being rolled out by L'Oreal around the world. Hayley shares key insights in this interview on self-care and communication for stylists working both inside salons and independently, and salon owners managing employees. The Kaipara Mayor says the vote to disestablish the council's Māori ward could go either way. Kaipara District Council could become the first to remove the Te Moananui o Kaipara Māori ward under new legislation. Councillors are meeting in Mangawhai today to vote on the decision, with protests also expected. Mayor Craig Jepson called the meeting just 24 hours after the new law kicked in. Jepson told Mike Hosking he doesn't think there's any need for Māori Wards He says it'll be a democratic process, but he just hopes intimidation doesn't change councillors' votes. Councils have until September 6 to make a decision, with a number of councils leaning towards retention. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
