On today's show, we chat with two - time guest, Jordan St. Cyr! It was when Jordan St. Cyr was a teen and served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) that he found the inspiration to pursue music as a career. He eventually released an EP, and in the years that have followed, he has released more music and has received numerous life-changing opportunities to work alongside many talented songwriters, producers, and artists, all of whom have encouraged him along his journey. From playing numerous events of all sizes and meeting people from many different walks of life, humanity's deep desire for meaningful connection has been revealed to him and the hope to find something more vibrant than our current reality. St. Cyr dropped his first full-length self-titled album in the spring of 2022 with Seattle-based label, BEC Recordings. The project features the chart-climbing radio hits "Fires" and "Weary Traveler" - both of which offer a pursuit of hope, even in our darkest moments, to know that God gives us stories to share and encourage one another through our fires and weary travels, to give us strength in the midst of them. And it was “Fires” that quickly put St. Cyr on the map, hitting the airwaves on major networks and stations for nearly 18 months straight and reaching millions weekly and going top 5. “Weary Traveler” followed, which also became his first No. 1 hit single, taking the top spot on all radio charts. 2022 continued to be an astounding year for St. Cyr. He became a two-time GMA Dove Awards nominee, being recognized for Best New Artist and for Short-Form Video Of The Year ("Weary Traveler”), followed by sweeping the GMA Canada Covenant Awards with six wins, the most out of any other nominees and adding to his already five Covenant Award wins. He was recognized as Artist of the Year, Album and Male Vocalist of the Year along with Best Pop Song, Live Music Artist, and AC Artist of the Year. While he continues to create music and tour, Jordan St. Cyr is really just getting started. We have to build our life on something, if we don't we will fall. Jordan St. Cyr's sophomore album, My Foundation, resonates with those building their foundation on solid rock. He speaks through personal experiences that touch the hearts of all who have weathered storms. “The idea of my foundation has never been physical,” Jordan explains. “It's always been this understanding of God as my heavenly Father; being the foundation on which I build my life on and the home I get to participate in building with Him for my wife and kids.” With all that Jordan has experienced the last few years, he praises the Lord for the outcome, “I now rejoice for all the gifts He gave us through the process.” 'My Foundation' is out today! jordanstcyr.com @jordanstcyr christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/message

Alyssa Garcia and I met when she was a student and I was a songwriting professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Before she ever took my songwriting class, she was one of a handful of private-lesson students I taught each term in a dusty and desolate 4th floor practice room in the campus "Main Building".. the room had a piano and one working power outlet from the early 20th century. During that 10-week term, I got to see Alyssa's talent as a musician and songwriter close-up. One of the songs she wrote during that time became her course project, which we recorded together in GarageBand and it ended up on one of her EPs. You can check out "Apart" on Spotify HERE.Even before she attended Drexel, Alyssa was already a seasoned musician with a lot of career accolades, including sync placements for her song “Loved Actually” which landed on several episodes of The Young and the Restless and in the Netflix original movie The Starling. In 2015, she won the Philadelphia Songwriters Project annual contest AND if I'm not mistaken, her 2018 Hometown Heroes Homey Award for Best Pop Song made her the youngest ever recipient of that award. As a female Filipino-American musician, she has faced a number of challenges head on, taking inspiration from Grammy winning Filipino artists like Steve Lacey and Beabadoobee, and showcasing her talent on several instruments and in high profile settings, like Music Fest in Bethlehem, PA. Her stated credo that "Music Is The Cure" resonates loud and clear with her supports and with me!I hope you enjoy this great conversation!~JKF ❤

Join Heart of Indie Radio co-host Emme Lentino as we welcome singer-songwriter Charlie PS in our studios. Vancouver-based Charlie PS has a sound that could be described as a sonic mel7ng pot. Although she grew up surrounded by ‘90s Bri7sh pop culture, her sonic inspira7ons stem from a mix of the R&B divas of the ‘70s and ‘80s and the rock and blues legends of the 20th century ranging from Kiki Dee to Stevie Nicks, borrowing elements of strong vocals and energe7c riffs and using them to create her own modern sound. Her new single “Ghost of You” (May 2021) combines flavors of alterna7ve and southern rock, crea7ng a backdrop for ‘’western-esque’ storytelling. “‘Ghost of You” is a step in a new direc7on for me,” explains Charlie. “My sound has been rooted in mainstream ‘pop/rock’ but has naturally evolved to become more “alterna7ve/rock”, seasoned with a southern twist of rus7c toned guitars.” Charlie’s debut EP, Li,le Miss Dysfunc5onal (2018) speaks an undisclosed story of disingenuous rela7onships that are interpreted differently by each listener and her effervescent style resurrects the dying niche that is females in rock music. The EP’s single, “Lile Miss Dysfunc7onal” went on to be nominated and win ‘Best Pop Song’ and was also nominated for ‘Best Music Video’, while Charlie herself was nominated as ‘Ar7st of the Year’ at the Kootenay Music Awards (2019). She also placed in the Top-100 in CBC’s Searchlight compe77on and won a spot at the local Surrey Fusion Fes5val (2019). Upon winning the 7tle of 'Kootenays Best Singer' (2013), Charlie made her way through the venues and fes7vals that her small hometown of Nelson, BC had to offer and aber gradua7ng from Selkirk College's 'Contemporary Music Program' (2014) she relocated to Vancouver, BC.

This week's show is filled with joy and sorrow, because there're always two sides to every coin. The Passing of an Oregon Giant - 1:03Last week the beloved artist Rick Bartow passed away. His boldly colorful, emotive and idiosyncratic works featured creatures on the cusp of the material and the spiritual world, like stories and myths made flesh. Seinabo Sey - 12:49Swedish performer Seinabo Sey's powerful, soulful delivery betrays the complicated uncertainty that lies beneath the surface of her music. She won the Swedish Grammy for Best Newcomer last year and another this year for Best Pop Song, and her performance at the Grammys, where she invited dozens of black women on stage, drew comparisons to Beyonce. Sey came to the OPB studio to perform and talk about why she'd do anything Beyonce told her to, even though the Queen Bey might learn a thing or two from Sey.Joined Voices - 24:52Last year, Phoebe Flanigan reported on the unique melding of indie rock bands and the choirs of Camas High School known as Joined Voices. This year, Joined Voices returns with the band AU composing 45 minutes of new choral music, plus special guests Edna Vasquez and Luz Elena Mendoza. The concert is on April 15 at Yale Union. Candidates on the Arts - 34:31As part of our ongoing coverage of the upcoming elections we've been sitting down with local candidates to gather their views on arts and culture in the city. This time around we're talking with mayoral candidates Sarah Iannarone and David Schor, and city council candidate Shannon Estabrook.Sex, Love and Death: OBT Choreographers James Canfield and Nicolo Fonte - 41:40Oregon Ballet Theatre's founder, James Canfield, and new resident choreographer, Nicolo Fonte, came into the studio to discuss their two works that are being staged this season. Set to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," Fonte's full-length ballet, "Beautiful Decay," pairs veteran local dancers Susan Banyas and Gregg Bielemeier with OBT's company in an exploration of aging and death. Both choreographers agreed, though: whether contemporary or classic, it's all about sex, death, and love.
Almost since the release of her first single, "Younger," at the ripe age of 23 in 2013, Gambian-Swedish singer Seinabo Sey has been hailed as a pop sensation. She went on to win the Swedish Grammy for Best Newcomer in 2014 and, after the release of her debut LP, "Pretend," last year, for Best Pop Song in February. Her performance at the Grammys, compared in the European press to Beyonce's SuperBowl show, involved bringing 200 black women on stage to stare silently at the audience while she sang.Sey's powerful, soulful delivery betrays the complicated uncertainty that lies beneath the surface of her music. Sey came to the OPB studio to perform and to speak with State of Wonder's Aaron Scott. Highlights from their conversation are below. On her song "Pretend":"I feel sometimes that I know what I should think. I know reasonably how things should be, but it's hard to feel it and to really believe it. So, the song is about if the world would end tomorrow, you'd be alright with it and it wouldn't feel like a catastrophe. I feel like I'm always preparing for a catastrophe in my music, but I don't know if that's a good thing. I'm trying to teach myself how to take it easy, calm down and take each moment as it comes."On what drew her to music and soul in particular:"I grew up listening to reggae a lot. I feel like Luciano or Beres Hammond are definitely soul singers. Those were the first voices I heard when I was a kid. Then I learned to listen to soul through Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Destiny's Child. A lot of people think I listen to really old music. I haven't listened to an entire Nina Simone record ever, but I feel like I've received those influences through a Lauryn or an Erykah. I've listened to a lot of voices and I feel like soul is not a genre. It's more an expression or a timbre in your voice and telling the truth."On her performance of "Hard Times" at the Swedish Grammys:"I started googling magazine covers of Swedish magazines, and I realized that no one was black on the cover for a year. I got really pissed off one night on Instagram and started posting about that, because a lot of our business is about being nice to magazines because you want the press to cover you. I just flipped out and started calling them out."I felt the main argument in Sweden is 'we don't know who to put on the cover' or 'where are the black people?' I put 100 black women on the stage to show that we do exist and this is a fragment of us here. Take a [screen shot] and put it on your magazine."On the similarity between her Grammy performance and Beyonce's Super Bowl show:"I've been obsessed with Beyonce since I was 10 years old. Whatever Beyonce tells me to do, I will do. I did come up with the whole performance thing before she did it, but I don't care, because I feel like for her to take those steps and to be brave enough to do those things that I, as a teeny weeny artist from Sweden — for me it's not very brave, but for her and the whole machinery of her to do those things, I think is crazy. I'm totally looking forward to her new album and I hope she just flips the f--k out, so that everyone else can do that."
