The guys also explore the indie-rock guest stars on Beyoncé's new blockbuster album Cowboy Carter (7:11), including Adam Granduciel, Jonathan Rado, and some dude from The Stills. From there, they review the great new Vampire Weekend album, Only God Was Above Us (12:49), which manages to change the band's just enough while retrenching with some classic themes. They also look back at Modest Mouse's Good News For People Who Love Bad News (28:06), which turns 20 this week, a crucial album in the mainstreaming of indie rock in the aughts that might also be... not that great? In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the band Cindy Lee while Steven stumps for the latest from Phosphorescent and the Philly band A Country Western (52:36).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Episode # 215 - Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more! Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, recently announced ‘Rio', his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years, set for release in just a week's time on the 6th October 2023 worldwide. Given that his previous vocal-led solo album, ‘Can't Look Away', was released in 1989 (2012's ‘Jacaranda' was all-instrumental), Rabin has kept us waiting for more than three decades for a follow-up. Trevor admits that there was pressure from all sides, including his own family, to have speeded up the process. However, the delay is excusable. Since leaving Yes following the ‘Talk' album in 1994 and largely as a prequel to touring as part of ARW in 2016, the guitarist entered the time-consuming world of movie soundtracks. Not just any old movies, either. Trevor's name appears as composer for such blockbusters as Con Air, Armageddon, Remember the Titans, Enemy Of The State, Deep Blue Sea, Glory Road, and Gone In 60 Seconds and both National Treasure movies, amongst many others. “Over the past ten years I was having ideas, concepts that I couldn't implement due to my busy schedule,” he explains, adding: “To be honest, those years flew by in a flurry. I knew that this was the time, and once I found my momentum I worked on the album 24/7.” The process proved a labour of love and as with his first and second solo records, ‘Trevor Rabin' and ‘Face To Face' (from 1977 and '79 respectively), Rabin handled just about all of the instruments himself. Stylistically, ‘Rio'– is tough to categorise. Besides guitar-driven rock-meets-pop, ‘Goodbye' is Country & Western with an edgy drive, while ‘Tumbleweed' begins in a burst of harmonies. No wonder its working title was ‘The Demographic Nightmare'. “I wanted to get into many different areas,” Rabin states. “Of course there are ‘prog things', but overall there are a lot of styles going on.” As mentioned, Trevor plays the majority of the instruments on the record. However, on drums for a number of tracks is Lou Molino, while Trevor also contributes some drums and percussion. Vinnie Colaiuta provides drums on ‘Push', and Rabin's son Ryan Rabin helped out with some of the most important percussive arrangements. Along the way Trevor also drafted in a couple of friends, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine, to sing back up on two songs, as well as Charlie Bisharat on violin.

This summer's Indiecast episodes have leaned banter heavy thanks to a slow trickle of review-worthy indie albums. But this week, it seems like every indie band got together to give the people want they want: an all-meat Indiecast episode. On this week's episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen review four albums: The Mars Volta's self-titled LP (17:43), Death Cab For Cutie's Asphalt Meadows (28:42), Whitney's Spark (40:41), and Young Jesus' Shepherd Head (51:44).In the Recommendation Corner (1:00:15) this week, Ian gave a shout out to Top Shelf Records. The indie record company announced this week they were royally screwed over by their main distribution company abruptly shutting down, and founder Kevin Duquette said all their inventory is being held in limbo. Ian also urges listeners to check out a new joint project by Philly bands They Are Gutting A Body Of Water and A Country Western. Meanwhile, Steven recommends Daniel Romano, a very prolific Canadian musician who put out eight albums in 2020 alone ranging from folk to punk rock.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. “Miss Country Soul” Jeannie Seely was one of the premier female singers of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Known for her big heart, emotion-packed voice, and salty wisecracks on stage – “Of course I want you for your body. I've got a mind of my own;” “An ex-husband is one mistake you don't have to live with;” and others – she blazed a nonconformist trail in Nashville, sporting a miniskirt her first time onstage at the Grand Ole Opry and a sassy attitude wherever she went. The youngest of four children, petite, blonde Seely was never a stranger to work – or to country music. Her father worked at a local steel mill and on the family's farm, but on weekends played the banjo and called local square dances, and her mother sang with her every Saturday morning while the two baked bread. Soon, Jeannie was singing regularly on local radio station WMGW and, by age 16, on Erie television station WICU. At 21, Seely and three girlfriends moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a deejay on Armed Forces Radio Network, wrote songs for Four Star Music (Dottie West and Connie Smith performed some of her early tunes), sang on country television show “Hollywood Jamboree,” and recorded for Challenge Records. Passing through town, songwriter Hank Cochran encouraged her to bring her talents to Nashville. She turned up unexpectedly in 1965 (with $50 and a Ford Falcon to her name) and announced to Cochran, “Well, I'm here! Cochran. Within three weeks it was on the country charts, peaking at No. 2. Her performance of the song earned Seely the 1966 GRAMMY award and led to a string of hits through the late 1970s. Today she is among the small group of artists who has had a No. 1 hit as a soloist, a duet partner, and a songwriter, and “Don't Touch Me” is considered a country standard.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

T. Graham Brown rose to country stardom through the uniquely Southern phenomenon of beach music, a party-ready mix of old-time rock & roll, R&B, country, and blues. Born in Arabi, Georgia (his real first name is Anthony), he got his start performing while attending the University of Georgia, as part of the beach music duo Dirk & Tony. He then joined the outlaw country band Reo Diamond, and retooled his image as a hairy, tattooed wildman in a ten-gallon hat. Moving on in 1979, Brown formed his own R&B band, Rack of Spam, and officially settled on T. Graham Brown as his stage name. He moved to Nashville three years later, where, with the help of Harlan Howard, he found work singing demos and commercial jingles. In 1983, he signed with CBS as a staff songwriter, and went on to join the Tree International publishing firm in the same capacity. Meanwhile, he also landed a deal as a recording artist with Capitol, and released his debut album, I Tell It Like It Used to Be, in 1986. Partly recorded at Alabama's legendary Muscle Shoals studios, the record spawned a number one country single in "Hell or High Water," and both the title track and "I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again" went Top Ten. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Psalms for Life - Psalm 1: Just as Country Western music expresses the pleasure and pain of the human experience, the book of Psalms presents us with a worship playlist written for God's people in the Old Testament reminding them of His love for them and his repeated call to return home to Him.  Psalm One will be our focus this weekend in learning to delight in the Lord. Consider what bring you delight in your life on a daily basis… how far down the list did you have to go before finding the Lord!?  Over the years we encourage people to invite Jesus into their lives… Psalm 1 invites us into God's life of blessings and delight. Failing to respond to that invitation finds one following along with the crowd along a road in life that ends up heading down a dead-end street! Let's learn how to delight in the Lord together!

Hannah Bethel is that rare artist who blurs lines between Americana, country, and rock. Her musical artistry is a reflection of who she is: a fierce, independent, wild, free and untamed spirit. After dedicating her life to music, Bethel has now risen to claim her place at the vanguard of independent singer/songwriters in Nashville's vibrant music scene. Her music captures the essence of her signature sound by blending elements of the many genres and styles that have influenced her writing and creative expression. Being fearless and unafraid to bare her deepest feelings in her songs is a reflection of her lifestyle, from solo backpacking in the deserts of Arizona and the mystical Joshua Tree, to hiking snow-peaked mountains in Alaska, Bethel lives her life to the fullest. She has experienced deep love, great loss and the healing power of personal growth and redemption – and she translates those life experiences to listeners though her songs, music videos and live performances.  Bethel was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where as a child she studied dance and appeared in theater performances. She attended elementary school in nearby Oakfield, before moving to Houghton, Michigan where she went to middle and high school. She grew up listening to Country and Seventies Rock music. Drawing on influences from Tom Petty, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Willie Nelson, among others, she spent her teenage years traveling the upper Midwest performing at fairs, bars, talent shows, coffee houses, shopping malls and Country Western shows.Bethel's career trajectory took a sharp upward turn following the release of her single and music video “Train” in October, 2018. A deeply personal song, “Train” was the beginning of a new chapter in her musical career, and one that saw her firmly taking the reins of her musical expression and how it is produced and presented. Bethel and “Train” were selected as a CMT Music “Artist Discovery” where Bethel and “Train” were featured across all CMT broadcast, online and social media platforms. 2022 has seen Bethel release three singles, “Bad News Baby,” “Godspeed, Los Angeles” and “Someone's Woman,” all from her highly anticipated new EP, ‘Until the Sun Comes Back Around.' The six-song project, released in late March, has received critical acclaim from media across America and Europe, and inclusion on Americana, folk, and country editorial playlists at major outlets across the digital spectrum. On the heels of her latest music, she took home the award for top “Female Vocalist of the Year” (all genres) at the 2022 Appalachian Arts and Entertainment Awards.https://www.instagram.com/hannahbethel/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/hannah.bethel.artisthttps://twitter.com/hannahbethel?lang=enHost - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For Sponsorship Information or Questions -  ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

Janie Fricke was born in South Whitney, Indiana, on December 19, 1947 and grew up in a family of music lovers. She started singing in the church her family attended, and as a child she first learned to play piano, then guitar. Her first vocal influences were folkies like Joan Baez and Judy Collins as well as thoughtful pop artists such as Rita Coolidge and Dusty Springfield, which informed her repertoire when she started performing at coffeehouses and school events. Fricke attended Indiana University, where she majored in elementary education, and while she loved singing, she didn't believe it could be a viable career for her. That changed, however, when she joined the university's choral group, the Singing Hoosiers, and after a rehearsal, she saw a bulletin board announcement looking for vocalists to record station breaks and commercial jingles for a local radio station. Fricke found she was well-suited for the work, and in time moved up to recording vocals for national ad campaigns, including a popular spot for the Red Lobster restaurant chain.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Additional references include the single “Coon Town” and the album “It's the Attitude Stupid!”. When Ruckus falsely renames himself “Toby” upon seeing Jimmy Rebel at the door, it is a reference to the series Roots in which Kunta Kinte is renamed Toby by his slave master. As Ruckus talks to Jimmy Rebel he says “As if the internet scams and underwear bombs weren't bad enough, Goddamn Nigerians” This was a reference to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian Muslim who unsuccessfully tried to ignite plastic explosives hidden in his underwear while on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on December 24, 2009. The limousine Ruckus and Jimmy escape in is painted with the orange color scheme of the General Lee car from The Dukes of Hazzard. During the limousine ride to “Spokenhoke”, there is a “Robert E. Lee Freeway” sign. The sign next to Ruckus's door which says “Wallace for President” is a reference to one of the many presidential runs of segregationist former Alabama governor George Wallace. During the scene where Uncle Ruckus is sitting on his couch you can clearly see an LP labeled “Songs in the Key of Coon”, which is a reference to Stevie Wonder's album Songs in the Key of Life. How Am I Creative? Similarities and differences, all are good and enrich your life's experiences.  My creativity springs from  my love of music, dancing, love, laughter, photography, and writing. I also found from my studies of Early Childhood Development and working with preschoolers, how to be non-judgmental and open.  It's all about the process and not the product.  It is a lesson that resonated with me in my own life. I listen to music all day, everyday.  In my travels both in the US and foreign countries, as a child land a “grown-up”, I discovered a lot of different  music that literally moves me.  It depends on my mood, but I like everything from rock and roll, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Native American, Celtic and Country.   I love to dance…I've studied ballet, learned Japanese Dancing, Hawaiian Hula, Country Western, the two-step & West Coast swing and clogging.  Lately, I'm trying out a video class forTahitian dancing.  I often create dances as I go about my daily chores in my home, making up steps as I go. I feel that I have always had a rich, imaginative life.  As a kid, alone in my bedroom, I used to sing and dance around to the songs of my favorite musicals.  Photography has also been a way for me to express my creativity.  Starting when I was about 10 or 11, I used to set up my Barbie and Ken dolls in various adventures and take photos os them with my Brownie camera.  As I progressed, I learned to use a SLR camera and took slides of everything..from road trips, camping trips, sunrises, sunsets, wild flowers and my children as they explored the world around them.   I find there is much creativity in laughter.  As I photograph the world around me, I always find something of interest, flowers, birds, trees, even campfire flames spur my sense of creativity and wonder.  A couple of my favorite shots are of my campfire, where one looks like a dragon emerging from the flames and the other a very eerie Brownie face, with flames shoots out one eye.  Creativity is life! I don't want to explain what I am seeing, I want to share what it is that I see when  I'm looking at something that spurs me to photograph it, or explore, how would this look if I videoed it in slo motion?  What does this make me think of when I see it?  What caption can I add to share my vision of what I'm seeing through the lens of my life's experiences?   ***Head on over to Creatrix Compass and explore our many offerings from free inspiration to get your creative juices flowing to creativity classes to creativity coaching and life coaching for creatives.  It can all be found at: https://www.creatrixcompass.com Your donation helps us continue to spread creativity throughout the land.  Thank you! https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=2PM3V82XDS7GA
