Kazi Ahmed took a small insight—seeing friends cash out from Amazon brands—and built Carbon6, a software roll-up startup, selling it for $210M just three years later. But behind the quick success was a frantic scramble to survive. Aggressive acquisitions nearly ran them out of cash, forcing a brutal pivot from burning $1M per month to profitability and explosive organic growth. This episode dives deep into Kazi's playbook: when to ignore customer interviews, how to pivot on a dime, and why getting started immediately beats perfect planning every time. Why You Should Listen:How Kazi Ahmed built a startup from $0 to a $210M exit in just 3 years. Why chasing perfect ideas kills startups (and what to do instead). How aggressive acquisitions almost destroyed the company—and the tough pivot that saved it.Why customer interviews are overrated and sales beats surveys every time. How to identify when a roll-up strategy makes sense (and when it doesn't).Keywords:startup growth, Amazon FBA, acquisition strategy, profitable pivot, roll-up startups, founder stories, SaaS growth, startup exits, e-commerce software, early-stage advice00:00:00 Intro00:02:35 How COVID Unlocked an Amazon Gold Rush00:06:51 From Aggregating Brands to Aggregating Software00:12:04 Funding Acquisitions with Friends and Family00:16:18 The Art of Structuring Deals00:21:50 Pivoting from Acquisition Spree to Profitability00:26:35 Aggressive Cost Cutting and Cultural Reset00:29:43 Scaling Upmarket with a Sales-Driven Approach00:36:51 The $210 Million Acquisition by SPS Commerce00:40:26 Reflections and Realities of a Big ExitSend me a message to let me know what you think!
We have a special treat, which is a bhajan written by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, five prayers to Nṛsiṁhadeva in Navadvīpa. In a very revealing way. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura mentions that by his worship of Nṛsiṁhadeva, ostensibly in Nṛsiṁha Palli, and by rolling in the courtyard in ecstasy there at NṛsiṁhaPalli, the place where Nṛsiṁhadeva himself gives 24-hour darśana (the temple is never closed, because even if you go there and the door is closed, there's still a grid; you can look in and see Nṛsiṁhadeva), and of course, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura had a close relationship with Nṛsiṁhadeva in that Lord Narahari Deva had helped to reveal the actual birthplace of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. That is, that from the vantage point in Godrumadvīpa (which some of you may have visited), there's a balcony on the house of Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, or where he and Śrīla Bhaktsiddanta Saraswati Ṭhākura resided together and did many of their writings. Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura would look out and, curiously, in the morning time, just before maṅgala-āratī, he would see a cloud of dust coming from Nṛsiṁha Palli all the way to the place where the Yoga Pīṭha, or the appearance place of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, is. And that was one of the ways that he triangulated to come to understand that Nṛsiṁhadeva himself was coming for the maṅgala-āratīk of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in that place. We find that Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, although sometimes people may say or opine that, "Well, he's a Vaikuṇṭha deity. What are you worshiping him for? Our destination is Goloka Vṛndāvana and vraja-prema." But you'll see in this next bhajan, after the Daśāvatāra Stotra, that Nṛsiṁhadeva was actually prevalent, ubiquitous almost, in the pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He appears in various places, not the least of which is one of the first pastimes when the saṅkīrtana movement starts and Nṛsiṁhadeva personally comes and chastises the Kazi. The Kazi had tried to stop the saṅkīrtana, and Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva woke him up at night and put his nails into his chest and said, "Don't do that." And of course, there's Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī and other appearances of Lord Narahari Deva. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Substack Week: Bridging the Gap Between Agile Teams and Leadership With Josh Anderson In this Substack Week episode, we explore the critical challenges and opportunities in the relationship between Agile teams and organizational leadership. Josh Anderson shares insights from his extensive experience in technology leadership and discusses how both sides can work together more effectively. Understanding the Business-Team Divide "We are part of the business, but many teams separate it out say, 'Oh, that's over there, that's not us.' No, that is us." One of the most common challenges in organizations is the perceived divide between "the business" and development teams. Josh emphasizes that this separation is an anti-pattern that needs to be addressed. Teams must understand how they create value for customers and how their work connects to the organization's broader mission. The key is asking fundamental questions like "Why do we exist?" and focusing on delivering real value to customers rather than just building features or fixing bugs. The Art of Communication with Leaders "You have to reach across the aisle... speak in language that they understand, and of course the other side of the aisle has to understand that you may not understand all of the financial acumen or other things that they're throwing out." Effective communication requires both sides to make an effort to understand each other. Josh highlights the importance of: Using common language that everyone understands Being willing to ask for clarification when needed Explaining technical terms and concepts clearly Focusing on business value rather than process details Understanding that it takes approximately seven repetitions for new concepts to be fully absorbed Learning from Anti-Mentors "That experimental database of things I need to try is getting actively shrunk. So I'm starting to just cross off things. Okay, don't do that, don't do that, don't do that." Josh introduces the concept of "anti-mentors" - learning valuable leadership lessons from challenging experiences with ineffective leaders. This approach helps: Build a clear understanding of what not to do Narrow down the field of potential leadership approaches Create a stronger foundation for experimentation with new methods Transform negative experiences into positive learning opportunities The Leadership Laboratory "Constantly experiment with things. But be super inclusive about those experiments that you're going to run and say, 'Hey, this is who we want to be.'" Josh emphasizes treating leadership development like product development, using experimentation and feedback loops to improve continuously. Key aspects include: Setting clear expectations about experiments and intended outcomes Including team members in the process of change Giving changes enough time to show results Being open to adjusting based on feedback Creating a safe environment for trying new approaches Recommended Resources For Further Study The book: Turn the Ship Around by David Marquet Josn's The Leadership Lighthouse Newsletter on Substack The Meta-Cast Podcast with Josh and Bob Galen And take a look at KAZI.IO - Josh's consulting business [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Nabil Kazi has traveled to 129 countries Hey now, I am your host, Ric Gazarian. I am excited to share my conversation with Nabil Kazi. I connected with Nabil Kazi back in 2021 when he suggested a guest (Nick Butter - episode 95) for Counting Countries. I guess everything comes full circle as Nabil is a guest on this episode. Nabil and I have been in contact ever since and even connected in person for dinner in Bangkok at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Charlie Browns. Nabil has had two distinct chapters in his adult life. Chapter One, an executive in the land of Hollywood and Chapter Two, as a full time traveler. Maybe we can get some behind-the-scenes Hollywood insights. Some of you might have heard the tragic news from Bamiyan in Afghanistan. Nabil and I touch on this but while editing there are some greater details. Apparently, a tour provider from our 193 community brought a group to Afghanistan. Three Spaniard travelers and three Afghan locals were shot and killed. In additional six travelers and Afghans were also injured. Just a reminder when you ask in a conversation or online, “is it safe?” and many people respond, “I just went it is very safe, just go!”. Remember it was very safe for that traveler, on that specific day, time, and location. This is a country of 40 million and 250,000 square miles. That traveler is not a security expert on Afghanistan. If you are a listener, you have heard this before … the next Extraordinary Travel Festival will be held on November 15, 2024 in Bangkok. Discount code BANGKOK of $100, so please purchase your ticket today to lock in your savings at the . Just a reminder for those who are coming or thinking of coming that we will be hosting the NomadMania Awards live in Bangkok on Sunday evening. This is the great event that NM has been streaming on YouTube for the last several years. This is a great opportunity to get together and recognize some travelers who are making a difference. Ever chuckled so hard that your sides ached? Well, get ready to flex those laugh muscles as Josh Gideon, the comedic gem of the 757 scene, takes us through his leap from crafting YouTube skits to seizing the mic at Kazi's. We reminisce about the early days of viral Asian YouTubers and the art of translating digital giggles to live audience roars. Desi Banks may have made it look easy, but Josh's candid tales offer a heartwarming glimpse into the comedy grind and the unexpected turns one encounters on the road to a punchline.Lights dimming mid-joke, the echo of silence in a church hall—sound like a comedian's nightmare? You bet. These are the battle scars we laugh about now but were the shaping forces behind my own comedy saga. Navigating the tightrope of humor, I've felt the guidance of Lionel Harris and the pull towards talents like Roe Davis and Ron Taylor. The lockdown served as comedy's chrysalis, urging us to weave authenticity into our acts, and I can't wait to share how those solitary rehearsals are making the live comebacks even sweeter.Aspiring jokesters, lean in for a bit of wisdom wrapped in wit. The spotlight may be alluring, but it's the gritty love for the craft that'll keep your feet on stage, night after night. You'll hear how a shout-out to the relentless Josh Gideon embodies the hustle this game demands. Keep your eyes peeled on my social channels for the next chance to catch my act live—where the laughter's fresh, the stories are real, and the camaraderie's infectious.https://noidmediallc.komi.ioSupport the show
This week Kazi Adi Shakti joins me to discuss her essay "Emptiness, Creativity, & Feminist Ecology: An Introduction to Process Buddhism." Kazi is an artist and independent researcher studying and theorizing on the intersections of Process Philosophy, Madhyamaka Buddhism, Western Marxism and Ecofeminism, with a special focus on the unique role each might play in a holistic soteriology that includes them all. This was a fun conversation exploring Process thought in the flavor of Madhyamaka Buddhism. On the surface, the world of Process thought and Buddhism could appear to be at odds. Kazi proposes, that when held together, they actually inform each other and can create something beautiful. In her own words, Kazi believes that "Process Buddhism is able to more consistently fulfill the concept of Madhyamaka as freedom from views since the Buddhist dialectical component never supplies a view or perspective of its own, but only functions to eliminate inconsistencies and assumptions of the intrinsic nature from the one creatively advancing perspective in -process." Hunger Strikes Grow More Dire at Red Onion Prison Several Virginia prisoners began a hunger strike on Tuesday, December 26 at Red Onion State Prison, protesting the continued use of long-term solitary confinement at the institution. Despite critical concern, outcry from the public and prisoner populations in the state, incarcerated people are still subjected to this brutal practice which has been renamed “restorative housing” since July 1, 2023 when measures were passed to limit its use in the state. Leading these prisoners in this effort is longtime prison activist, revolutionary writer and artist, Kevin “Rashid” Johnson. Rashid has stated that no one will take any food at all until demands are met. Some of the strike participants have underlying health concerns that make the undertaking of such a demonstration particularly risky. Rashid, himself, is recovering from multiple rounds of radiation to treat prostate cancer as well as suffering from untreated heart disease/congestive heart failure. This is why the public's support is especially needed. We are asking that calls, emails, and letters be sent to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) officials as well as Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin's office voicing support for the strikers and condemnation for the inhumane use of long-term solitary confinement/restorative housing. PLEASE EVERY DAY THIS WEEK: call and email the following people demanding that the hunger strikers demands be met (end long term solitary confinement) and Rashid receive the medical care he has been denied for months, and that he be transferred immediately. If the latter is not an option, then demand an interstate compact transfer take place immediately. chadwick.dotson@vadoc.virginia.gov 804-674-3081 glenn.youngkin@governor.virginia.gov 804-786-2211 ** Demand that the Governor intervene on Rashid's behalf and that an internal investigation be conducted immediately that would reveal why there were documents removed from his medical jacket and why his referrals to outside medical care were canceled. Joka Jeupe Mkali, AKA Komrade Shine White, who put out this call to action, said "Death is inevitable, but it mustn't be at the hands of some racist dogs. Rashid walks in shoes that cannot be filled, thus we must keep him walking in them as long as possible." Thank you for all you do to help prison rebels keep walking!
