Former Governor, Congressman, and Presidential Candidate Mark Sanford joins me this week to discuss resilience, leadership, and lessons from his dynamic political journey. A prominent Republican figure, Sanford rose to national attention in 1994 as South Carolina's Congressman, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most fiscally conservative members of Congress. He later served two terms as Governor, implementing policies aimed at improving the state's business climate and job prospects. However, his career faced a turning point in 2009 due to a widely publicized affair that led to the end of his marriage and seemingly his political future. In a remarkable comeback, Sanford reclaimed his congressional seat in 2013 and became one of President Trump's few vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately led to his 2018 primary defeat. In his memoir, Two Roads Diverged, Sanford reflects on the defining moments of his public life, sharing candid insights on his mistakes, growth, and the lessons learned in maintaining integrity even when it's challenging. Sanford's story is a compelling look at resilience, redemption, and the complexity of American politics._______________________More about Mark SanfordSanford burst onto the national stage in 1994 when he was elected to represent South Carolina's 1st congressional district. A fiscally conservative Republican, Sanford quickly gained a reputation as Congress's most fiscally conservative member, known for his unwavering commitment to reducing government spending. His political star continued to rise as he was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving two terms and accomplishing a long list of firsts designed to better people's lives and make the state more inviting for businesses and entrepreneurs. However, Sanford's life took a major turn in his sixth year as Governor. In 2009, a well-chronicled affair brought about the collapse of his 20-year marriage and what seemed to be the end of his political career. Yet, in a remarkable display of political resilience, Sanford made a comeback in 2013, winning a special election to reclaim his old congressional seat and serving until 2019.During his second stint in Congress, Sanford became known as one of President Trump's most vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately contributed to his primary defeat in 2018. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Sanford briefly threw his hat into the ring for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination, positioning himself as a voice for fiscal responsibility.Discover more about Mark Sanford at https://www.marksanford.com/_______________________Connect with Whitney McDuffAttribution Link: Whitney's Website Attribution Link: The Dames Group Attribution Link: Standing Ovation Society –––––––––––––––––––––––––––Track: Welcome — Declan DP [Audio Library Release]Music provided by Audio Library PlusWatch: • Welcome — Declan DP | Free Background...
