As a child growing up on the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, Washington Yotto Ochieng once watched a plane cross the night sky and told his mother he wished he could travel on it. But he remembers her encouraging him to dream bigger... Today, Washington is a Professor of Engineering at Imperial College London, and President of the Royal Institute of Navigation. Over a career bridging industry and academia, he has helped shape the movement of urban transport; how satellites guide us and locate us; and how governments manage the technologies underpinning so much of modern life. Professor Jim Al-Khalili speaks to Washington about his inspirational upbringing, how reliant we've become on technologies such as GPS, and his work encouraging the next generation of engineers in both the UK and Africa.

Happy Mother's Day! Today, we celebrate the women who have nurtured, led, and loved us. But today is also a special "one-off" bridge message as we transition from our "Unstoppable Acts" series. In 2013, Pastor Tom traveled to Kenya—from the dense urban slums of Kiberra to the lush mountains above Lake Victoria. In this message, he shares a "hidden chapter" of his journey and how it fundamentally shifted his understanding of God's heart for justice, generosity, and compassion. In this message, we explore: The Power of "Womb-Love": Understanding the Hebrew word rakhum (Compassion) and how God uses a mother's heart to describe His own. The Speaking Stick: A lesson from the Maasai warriors on dignity and giving a voice to the silenced. Does it work? Looking at the 2013 study on how child sponsorship creates a lifelong "Solid Rock" of hope. RESOURCES MENTIONED:

Denmark made headlines in 2024 as the first country to implement a carbon tax on livestock emissions. The country's ambitious 70% emissions reduction target by 2030 includes agricultural reductions of 55-65%. What makes Denmark's policy truly remarkable isn't the tax itself—it's the 60% tax deduction corresponding to mitigation potential. This signals that Denmark's approach isn't anti-livestock, but rather pro-innovation, explicitly avoiding targets on livestock numbers while incentivizing farmers to adopt technologies and practices that can reduce emissions by up to 40%.The impact of Denmark's inclusive policy-making approach through the tripartite agreement cannot be understated. Ministers, farmer representatives, nature organizations, labor unions, and industry came together to craft comprehensive solutions extending far beyond livestock taxation—encompassing voluntary land reform with full compensation, significant afforestation efforts, biodiversity enhancement, and water protection.Today we are joined by Tobias Gräs, Head of Policy at the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, where he coordinates climate action through the World Farmers' Organization and represents Danish farmers and major European cooperative businesses in Brussels. Fresh from COP 30 in Belém, Brazil, Gräs brings insights from Denmark's pioneering policy implementation and an ambitious $50 million Green Climate Fund project transforming dairy production in Kenya's Lake Victoria region. The Tunza GCF project demonstrates how Denmark's cooperative model can drive change across vastly different contexts. Partnering with FAO and the Green Climate Fund, this five-year initiative received $50 million in funding in 2025. with an additional $10 million loan component from Kenyan banks. The project targets 130 agricultural cooperatives representing 80,000 farmers across six value chains in Kenya's Lake Victoria region: dairy, coffee, tea, poultry, African leafy vegetables, and fruit trees. Kenyan dairy cows in the Lake Victoria region average just three liters per day—with potential to reach seven liters through improved feed and management practices. The project aims to achieve 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gas emission savings by 2030 and 4.3 million tons by 2045.The project's success relies on how farmer-owned cooperatives returning value to farmers through dividends and the provision of technical assistance to cooperatives on climate-efficient practices across value chains. As Denmark prepares to scale its domestic climate policies while simultaneously supporting Kenya's transformation through the Tunza project, we welcome Tobias Gräs to discuss the successes and challenges of translating ambitious climate targets into practical action across radically different farming systems.Send us a text

CFO Ingo Hofmaier detailed the company's progress toward a final investment decision (FID) targeted for late 2025, highlighting how decades of exploration work and recent infrastructure improvements have transformed the project's development prospects. The July 2025 feasibility study marked a watershed moment, providing the first public financial analysis of the deposit in its 50-year history. The numbers demonstrate compelling economics: a $1.6 billion after-tax NPV, 23.3% IRR, and 4.5-year payback period, with all-in sustaining costs of $3.36 per pound net of byproduct credits. The deposit contains approximately 50 million tons of reserves at 1.9-2% nickel grades, with valuable copper and cobalt byproducts that position Kabanga in the lower quartile of the global cost curve.Infrastructure improvements have fundamentally de-risked the project. Tanzania's new standard-gauge railway from Dar es Salaam to Lake Victoria addresses historical logistics concerns, while three new hydropower stations provide grid connection with 95-98% availability. These developments eliminate the power and transportation constraints that previously hindered development efforts.Lifezone secured a $60 million bridge facility with Taurus Mining in August 2025, funding execution readiness activities while the company advances project financing discussions. The high-grade nature of the deposit supports a targeted 60/40 debt-to-equity financing structure for the $950 million to $1.2 billion capital requirement. Advanced discussions with the U.S. Development Finance Corporation, European export credit agencies, and Mineral Security Partnership members reflect Western government recognition of Kabanga's strategic importance amid 70-80% Indonesian supply concentration and associated geopolitical concerns. The company's proprietary hydrometallurgical processing technology offers environmental advantages over conventional smelting, eliminating sulfur dioxide emissions while leveraging the ore's 30% sulfur content to avoid purchasing sulfuric acid—a significant cost advantage over Indonesian laterite operations.View Lifezone Metals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/lifezone-metalsSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

With over-the-top kills, wild special effects, and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, this film delivers campy chaos that embraces its B-movie roots. We explore the film's outrageous set pieces, its blend of horror and comedy, and whether the 3D gimmick still holds up today. Is it mindless schlock or brilliantly self-aware splatter? Affordable cold boxes poised to help tackle food waste for small farmers in East Africa

A collaboration between Aston University in the UK and RAD Global will help small farmers in East Africa keep food fresher for longer, preventing food waste and improving livelihoods. Working with other partners they have developed pioneering cold storage boxes which can keep food fresh without access to grid electricity. Affordable cold boxes for small farmers in East Africa Whilst working in Uganda, Tim Messeder, founder of UK agricultural development company RAD Global, noticed that small scale fishers in Uganda had a major problem keeping fish fresh. The African country is large, and this causes an issue in keeping fish fresh in the blistering heat after it is caught from Lake Victoria and from various fishponds spread around the country in remote locations. The fishers, many of whom are women, have to transport their catch for up to nine hours during which time their harvest goes off. Surveys across the region reveal that 42% of traders experience fish spoilage due to inadequate cooling, resulting in lost income and increased food insecurity. To help prevent waste Tim drew up a plan for a cool box that could keep fish fresh for up to 48 hours, could be transported on the back of a motorcycle and was affordable to people on very low incomes. He contacted Aston University and between the two they developed his idea into the prototype now known as RADiCool, which aims to extend the safe selling window for fish from 12 to 24 hours. The prototype development was supported by the Efficiency for Access Research and Development Fund. The RADiCool system features a lightweight, insulated cold box powered by advanced phase change material (PCM) and integrated internet of things (IoT) technology for real-time temperature and GPS monitoring. The innovative system cools fish from 25°C to refrigeration temperatures within four hours and maintains cold storage conditions for over 24 hours, without additional pre-cooling capacity. Purpose-built to fit on motorbikes - the primary transport mode for rural vendors - RADiCool is practical, scalable, and tailored to first and last mile delivery needs in resource-constrained settings. PCM technology is an environmentally friendly solution for maintaining cooling temperatures. The materials absorb and release energy as they transition from solid to liquid and back again, similar to the process of ice melting and refreezing. These specially designed PCMs can maintain a consistent cold temperature for extended periods without the need for continuous electricity. This makes them particularly suitable for transporting food, medicine, and other temperature-sensitive items in an energy-efficient way. The PCM panels for RADiCool are frozen in solar-powered hubs for later use in precooling and storing the fish at the desired temperature. Tim Messeder said: "RADiCool brings together cutting-edge technology while taking into account the challenging realities of the African context. "We are committed to empowering small-scale traders with sustainable solutions that reduce waste and improve livelihoods." The project's success marks a major step forward in addressing the cold chain gap in Africa's informal food markets. Through field testing and technical iteration, the team has developed a system that can function effectively off-grid, supporting food security and economic resilience in the face of climate and infrastructure challenges. RAD Global and Aston University are now focusing on scaling and commercialisation. Planned next steps include finalising the new special design PCM panels, partnering with manufacturers, expanding field trials, and deploying a pay-per-use business model to increase accessibility. Ongoing collaboration with other partners (ThinkAqua UK, Therma-Inova UK and Dulotrop Uganda) will ensure further staff training, impact evaluation, and long-term sustainability. "RADiCool demonstrates the power of cross-sector innovation in addressing global development challenges," said Dr Ahm...

It's the 1930s. Amarendra Chandra Pandey, the youngest son of an Indian prince, is about to board a train when a man bumps into him. Amarendra feels a prick; he then boards the train, worried about what it portends. Just over a week later, Amarendra is dead—of plague. India had not had a case of plague in a dozen years: Was Amarendra's death natural, or premeditated—perhaps orchestrated by Benoy, his half-brother and competitor for the family riches? The case is the subject of Dan Morrison's book The Poisoner of Bengal: The 1930s Murder That Shocked the World (Juggernaut, 2024), who investigates how an Indian prince was able to get his hands on the plague, the scandalous murder trial that followed, and Benoy's surprising post-independence epilogue. Dan Morrison is an editor at USA TODAY's Washington bureau. His reporting from around the globe has appeared in outlets including National Geographic, the New York Times, BBC News and PRX's The World. He is also the author of The Black Nile (Viking: 2010), an account of his voyage from Lake Victoria to Rosetta, through Uganda, Sudan and Egypt. In 1857, British explorers Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke led an expedition from Zanzibar to find the source of the Nile River. Despite personal differences, they became the first Europeans to reach Lake Tanganyika in 1858. During the return journey, Speke left Burton and discovered Lake Victoria, which he identified as the Nile's source. Speke's claim was met with skepticism from Burton. In 1860, Speke and James Grant mapped part of Lake Victoria and found the Nile's exit, the Ripon Falls. On the eve of a public debate with Burton, Speke died in a hunting accident in 1864. Speke's discoveries were later confirmed, and he is credited as the first European to reach Lake Victoria and identify it as the Nile's source. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/juliusmanuel/message
