Field Of Gold and Lake Victoria produced devastating performances to become Irish Guineas champions over the weekend. Not surprisingly, they are the first main talking points in this week's edition of The Front Page. Lee Mottershead, Maddy Playle and Liam Headd look back at all the top weekend action and debate whether either of the two Classic winners is worth backing now to follow up at Royal Ascot. The panel also asks why the Curragh looked so quiet for the Guineas festival and assess how Los Angeles, Anmaat, Kalpana, White Birch and Sosie fared in Group 1 prizes that whet the appetite for the months ahead. Following the launch of British racing's new national marketing campaign, Maddy, Liam and Lee give their views on what they have seen so far and then wrap up last week's other major news stories, including the BHA's threat to block racecourses from staging fixtures.

In this interview, the Water Colors Team chats with special guest Dr. Jordyn Stoll, an accomplished aquatic ecologist with an expertise in algae! Jordyn’s formal interest in aquatic ecology began during her undergraduate work at Cleveland State University, where she helped with research using diatom fossils to understand changes in lake conditions over time. From there, she pursued a PhD at Kent State University, where she studied the effects of various nutrients on algae in the Great Lakes, Lake Victoria in Kenya, and the Cuyahoga River, specifically aimed at better understanding harmful algal blooms. Now as an aquatic ecologist with her own business, she hopes to continue researching and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species such as Didymosphenia geminata, while also working to improve freshwater habitat through restoration efforts. We are honored to have Jordyn on the show to share her expertise!  Join the discussion on the Water Colors Aquarium Gallery Podcast Listeners Facebook group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/788428861825086/ Enjoying the show? Turning the tide on plastic waste: Kenya’s Lamu Islanders upcycled washed up litter into boats

On the coastal island of Lamu, off Kenya's east coast, workers are turning plastic waste into furniture, even boats. Lamu is contending with mounds of plastic waste—some washed up on its beaches, others created by its own population. “We are collecting the waste plastic around Lamu archipelago, and we process those ones to make boats, furniture, and also doing a lot of research on what we can do with the plastic,” explains Ali Skanda, co-founder of the Flipflopi Project, an NGO founded in 2016. The Flipflopi Project receives grants from other NGOs which they then use to buy plastic waste from locals. After it arrives at their facility, workers sort it into different types and colors. It's then crushed, washed, dried, melted, then molded into different colors, shapes and sizes. “After pre-sorting, we have our sorters, and they categorize into different types and colors. So, they keep plastic into types and colors, separately,” explains Skanda. From there, plastic waste is upcycled into furniture and dhow boats. But Skanda says recycling also comes with challenges. He says nowadays, plastic manufacturers are adding additives to plastics, which makes it more difficult to recycle. Elsewhere, some plastics may be degraded by the sun and lose quality. Since 2019, the NGO has been sailing Flipflopi, claimed to be the world's first recycled plastic sailing dhow. They've gone on expeditions, including sailing from the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria, and have launched a further two boats made using recycled plastic waste. “We are doing this just for the world to understand that plastic is not waste,” says Skanda. “We can add value and make something like furniture, things like this. And more others, we are making dhows.” Each day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world's oceans, rivers and lakes, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). People are increasingly breathing, eating and drinking tiny plastic particles. Plastic production continues to ramp up globally and is projected to double or triple by 2050 if nothing changes.  This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The Children's Hospital of Entebbe, funded by the Italian NGO, Emergency, and designed by world famous architect Renzo Piano, was established in 2021 to change the situation. Ugandan Journalist Lulu Jemimah visits the hospital, on the shore of Lake Victoria, to ask whether one hospital is enough to reset the future for Uganda's children.

The women oohed and aahed as they spotted some of their favorites, including a broad-billed roller perched high in a cluster of trees and the rare sight of a female great blue turaco feeding one of her chicks. “Birds are everywhere. Her mother taught her that birds use their calls to communicate with each other, sending messages when there's danger or the seasons are about to change. And as the mother of a 2-year-old, she said it's been a challenge to find the time to develop her skills. For most Ugandan women, household responsibilities come first, and that can conflict with the demands of early morning birding trips and two- or three-week-long birding tours.  “A man can wake up and move for birding without looking at the children,” she said. “But to a woman, if you ever wake up and just leave kids without having breakfast, leave kids without making sure they are all  OK, you have committed a crime.”   Women learn to identify hundreds of bird species and hope to become professional bird-watching guides.  Credit: Anita Elash/The World Ironically, it was a man who founded the Uganda Women Birders in 2013. Herbert Byaruhanga said men had dominated the tourism business for “a very long time.” Byaruhanga is one of Uganda's most distinguished guides, known for taking young apprentices under his wing. But he said he hadn't thought of including women until a birdwatching trip in Illinois, led by a female guide. “She was 65 years old, and she was able to whistle out birds. And I was like, wow, if she can do this at 65, what about our girls in Uganda?” he said.  Uganda Women Birders started in 2013, with a sole aim of increasing the participation of Uganda's women in nature guiding.  Credit: Courtesy of Herbert Byaruhanga/Uganda Women Birders In many parts of Uganda, whistling is reserved for men – one of the cultural taboos that has kept women out of the industry. Uganda Women Birders tackles those taboos by giving women the experience and resources they need to prove they can do the job. The club currently has more than 100 members. About 30 women earn a living as bird guides. Wendi Haugh, a cultural anthropologist at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York, said the club has had a global impact. “What's surprising is how few women guides there are in countries where you wouldn't think this would be an issue,” she said. Haugh is writing a book about the working lives of professional bird guides. She said that even in countries like the United States, women bird guides still battle stereotypes. “How capable are you really of doing this? Do you really know your stuff? Can you actually drive this vehicle? You know, they're up against that without the support the Uganda women guides have,” she said. Haugh said Uganda's women guides are known around the world and some countries have started their own clubs. Some travel agencies are also training women or asking specifically for female guides. Kabarungi said the opportunity to learn from her fellow women birders has given her the courage to challenge stereotypes. She has learned to drive a safari van and apprenticed as a mechanic, typically considered as masculine skills in Uganda.  To become a professional birder, she said, “you have to first put the woman in you aside and try to be a man somewhere in those skills.” Machline Komujuni said the club uncovered a dream she never knew she had. She still can't afford binoculars but she's confident that someday she will. “My dream is not yet fulfilled fully as I want, but at least I'm in the line of fulfilling it and I will make it.” she said. “I'm trusting myself that I will make it.”

Uganda is known for the beauty and diversity of its landscape, encompassing as it does the enormous Lake Victoria and the snowy peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. It is a land of contrast, with lush gardens full of tropical fruit and vegetables for the table, while families scrabble around for food. Wildlife in abundance attracting a thriving tourist industry, but local children grow up having never seen an elephant. Uganda has the world's youngest population with over half of children under four living in poverty and some families only eating every other day. This complex and dynamic country provides many challenges for A Rocha Uganda as they try to balance the desperate needs of poor communities alongside their vision to always care for God's creation.Dr Sara Kaweesa, is the founder of A Rocha Uganda and for the last 15 years has been its National Director. She opens up about being accepted as a young female leader in a conservative culture, alongside the immense challenges of educating communities about conservation care, while providing for heartrending needs. As this was recorded in Kampala the sound quality isn't always ideal, but we know you'll be inspired regardless.

CatholicMom editor Maria Morera Johnson and contributor Heidi Hess Saxton welcome Fr Fred Jenga, President of Holy Cross Family Ministries, to a new podcast on prayer. In this inaugural episode of CatholicMom Prayercast, co-hosts Maria Johnson and Heidi Saxton welcome the President of Holy Cross Family Ministries, Father Fred Jenga. Fr. Fred shares his love of the Blessed Mother, the joy of singing as a form of prayer, and how prayer sustained him during a difficult time. As a spin-off of Catholic Momcast, we'll be sharing prayer stories, such as Fr. Fred's, to encourage you in your prayer journey. And of course, we'll be praying with you, and for you. Father Jenga is a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. The first Peyton Prayer Guild Chapters for children were formed under Father Jenga's leadership. He developed a program that brought children in schools and parishes together to learn the Rosary, pray for their families and learn about the life of Father Patrick Peyton. This program has grown and now thousands of children are participating. Father Jenga was born in Uganda, where he grew up on the banks of the River Nile and Lake Victoria, in the Ugandan district of Jinja. Father Jenga speaks several languages, including his ethnic language, Lusoga, as well as Luganda, Rutooro, Swahili, and Kinyarwanda. Links For the Show: Fr.
