Paula Marie Threadgill, 57, took her first breath in Heaven on April 30th in her home surrounded by her family after a hard-fought and valiant battle with cancer. Her celebration of life will be Saturday, May 4th at 10:00am at Meadowbrook Baptist Church with Rev. Cary Killough officiating. Please do not feel bad if you are late, as she probably will be as well. The family invites you to visit with them immediately following the service.Paula was born on November 15, 1966, in Longview, Texas to Wayne and Alice Thrasher. Her family relocated to Robinson when she was 7, where she was a 1985 Robinson High School graduate and resided until her death. Immediately after high school, she started her lifelong trade as a hairdresser. She would tell you that she never had to work a day in her life because she truly loved what she did. And throughout the years, her customers turned into family. Paula married Gaylon Threadgill on March 7, 2003, and up until he departed this life in 2022, they filled their years together with adventures, love, and grandkids. Paula was the one who always had an open door and a chair at her table for you. No matter where you had been, or where you were going, she welcomed you. She left a lasting impression on so many people with her compassionate spirit, love for life, and willingness to help anyone out. You could often find Paula at the beach, specifically Access Rd 1-A in Port Aransas. If she wasn't working, at the beach, or with her family, she loved baking and crafting. She crocheted many blankets for loved ones and enjoyed making cakes and decorating sugar cookies. Acts of service is how she often expressed her love.Paula was preceded in her death by her parents, Wayne and Alice Thrasher, her sister, Glenda Sue Jones, and her husband, Gaylon Threadgill. Left with the void of her absence is her sister, Cindy Thrasher, of Hainesville, and Natasha Thrasher, of Carlsbad, New Mexico; daughters Myla Welch (Brian Welch) of Rowlett, Zoey Threadgill of Robinson, Tammy Daniel (Krag Daniel) of Cleburne, and Ashley Dixon (Lance Dixon) of Charlotte, North Carolina; her favorite people in the world, her grandkids, Jack, Rowan, and Eleanor Welch, Colton and Jaygen Wells, Wyatt Daniel, Taylor and Garrett Dixon; great grandkids Travis and Waylon Wells. She also leaves behind many other beloved family members- some blood and some not.The family would like to thank Gentle Transitions Hospice for the incredible care provided to Paula by her dear friend, Rhonda. We also want to say how grateful we are to MD Anderson for their exemplary medical staff and the treatment Paula received, that no doubt gave us extra time with her. In the end, Paula expressed on many occasions how loved she felt. She was incredibly blessed and in awe of how many people were there fighting this battle with her. She said that some people never experienced the kind of love she had before they died, but she was so grateful to have been able to. So, thank you, for showing up and for meeting her needs and making her feel so loved. We are especially thankful to her church family at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. They have carried our family through some tough times and have shown time and time again they are truly the hands and feet of Jesus. We ask that any flowers in her memory be sent to Grace Gardens or in lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to MD Anderson at the website listed below. https://mdanderson.donordrive.com/campaign/paulathreadgill

In this episode we speak to Pulitzer Prize winning composer and musician Henry Threadgill and the co-author of his autobiography Brent Hayes Edwards. The book we discuss, which was published last year is entitled Easily Slip into Another World: A Life in Music. Henry Threadgill was born in Chicago in 1944. He is one of the most significant and innovative composers of the 20th and 21st Century. In addition to being an award winning composer is an amazing saxophonist and flautist. He also is known for his percussion work, in particular the invention of the hubkaphone, a marimba like instrument made out of hub caps. He has been a leader or co-leader of the bands Air, Ensemble Double UP, Make a Move, The Henry Threadgill Ensemble, The Henry Threadgill Sextett, The Situation Society Dance Band, Very Very Circus, X-75, Zooid and 14 or 15 Kestra: Agg and probably some others I didn't track down.  If we went into all the bands and groups Henry was a part of the list would be three times as long. In recent years Threadgill has established a completely new chromatic system for musical composition outside the confines of diatonic harmony. In 2016, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for In For a Penny, In for a Pound, an album he composed for his sextet, Zooid. He currently lives in New York. Brent Hayes Edwards is a Professor at the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University and the Director of the Scholars-in-Residence Program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. So why this episode, it's a bit outside of most of our content here. Perhaps the closest things we've done to a conversation like this would be the dialogue we hosted between Fred Moten & Hanif Abdurraqib or the interview we did with Dionne Brand last year. But although I didn't ask it directly, the guiding question that animated this interview and engagement with Henry and Brent's book for me was: what insights might a truly revolutionary composer have for aspiring revolutionary organizers or for cultural workers seeking to maximize the revolutionary possibilities of their work?  We hope you enjoy this conversation and that it proves as meaningful to you as it was to us. It was a tremendous honor to sit down with Henry Threadgill and Brent Hayes Edwards to discuss their beautiful book which is available now everywhere. Thank you to Aidan Elias for co-producing this episode. If you appreciate the work that we do, as always you can support our work for as little as $1 per month at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism. Our podcast is fully supported by individual contributions of folks like you and we encourage you to join the amazing folks who make it possible for us to bring you these conversations on a weekly basis.

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to December 15, 2017, episode 652 with Armadillo World Headquarters: A Memoir authors, Eddie Wilson and Jesse Sublett! Have a safe and happy new year! Below are my original notes from the show. Hello friends! Austin music legends Eddie Wilson and Jesse Sublett are my guests on the show today! Eddie Wilson started The Armadillo World Headquarters in 1971, brought the cowboys and the hippies together under one strange and beautiful roof to bond over music made by people that would go on to be some of music's greatest legends. He and musician/author, Jesse Sublett wrote the definitive story of the celebrated, historical music/art venue. Armadillo World Headquarters: A Memoir by Eddie Wilson with Jesse Sublett is an amazing account of the place and the people set in motion the Austin music scene that we know today. You can find it at awhq.com We have a great conversation about getting AWHQ started, why Eddie left AWHQ, great stories about the old days at The Adrmadillo, Threadgill's, Thanksgiving with The Grateful Dead and much, much more. I really loved this book and had a blast chatting it up with these two legendary gentlemen. Enjoy. Let's get down! He's one of three Jazz artists to ever win a Pulitzer Prize. Today is the publishing day for his autobiography, Easily Slip into Another World: A Life in Music, which details his early years in Chicago, playing in an Infantry Division Band in Vietnam, and how he settled in New York and made a name for himself in the East Village in the 1970s. The book comes around the same time as the release of his latest composition, The Other One. Threadgill joins us in studio to discuss both projects.

Through eccentric lyrics and catchy melodies, Katie reveals an inner world that is brutally honest, deeply vulnerable, and highly relatable.  Her appreciation of wide-ranging musical styles comes through in her work, and makes it hard to put a label on her.  If influences were ingredients, they would include: a base of Billie Holiday, a dash of David Byrne, a pinch of Pixies, and a flavor of Feist.  BRAGS: With a degree in creative writing, extensive national touring, and over 20 years of songwriting behind her, Katie is a seasoned performer who knows how to connect with her audience and make them cry, laugh, ponder, and fall silent.  She has performed at iconic venues such as: Club Passim in Boston, MA, Hole in the Wall, Strangebrew and the Driskill Hotel in Austin, TX, and the Threadgill stage at Kerrville Folk Festival. Co-bills include the likes of Heather Maloney, Ley Line, Peter Tork (Of the Monkees) and trading songs around campfires with a then-unknown Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief.) A., Cai, Y., Horowitz, Z., Mennicke, C., Coffey, R., Haider, M., Threadgill, D. W., Eliscu, R., Oldham, M. C., Greenbaum, A. C., Ghashghaei, H. T. Abstract: The Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays a role in cell proliferation and differentiation in healthy development and in tumors, however its requirement for brain development remains unclear. Here we used a conditional mouse allele for Egfr to examine its contributions to perinatal forebrain development at the tissue level. Subtractive bulk ventral and dorsal deletions of Egfr revealed that ventral but not dorsal telencephalic EGFR expression is critical for forebrain homeostasis and the presence of transiently EGFR-dependent glial lineages including robust depletion of oligodendrocytes that last the mouse lifetime. Sparse deletion using Mosaic Analysis with Double Markers (MADM) surprisingly reveals a regional requirement for EGFR in dorsal, but not ventral glial lineages including both astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. These findings lead to a model in which EGFR-independent ventral glial progenitors compensate for the absence of EGFR-dependent dorsal glia in the forebrain, thus masking its precise role in the bulk model. Uvalde updates: The Robb Elementary School building, where last month's mass shooting occurred, is set to be demolished. School district police chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on leave from those duties by Uvalde CISD administrators. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez has filed suit against the Texas Department of Public Safety, demanding that they hand over all records and information related to the shooting. And Texas Senate hearings on the crime at the Capitol that have been ongoing all this week have included very little discussion of guns. Speaking of guns - earlier this week, a man tried to enter the 7-11 store at Ben White and South 1st with an AR-15 rifle after the clerk declined to give him free gas. He's charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery. And, another man was arrested Sunday after firing rounds at people near Zilker Park and threatening a mass shooting at a weekly Sunday drum circle there. Median home prices inside the Austin city limits have hit another all-time new high: $667,000 on average as of May, a 21% year-to-year jump - we're now considered the second-most overpriced market in the U.S. Historic Ski Shores Cafe on Lake Austin has re-opened after a remodel by new owners McGuire Moorman Lambert, while the equally historic original Threadgill's site on North Lamar will see a 100-unit apartment building go up behind the restaurant structure, which will be preserved as part of the project after a request to tear it down was denied by the city. Live music this weekend: Friday shows including 5 Seconds of Summer and Pale Waves at Waterloo Park, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band at Antone's, and the fabulous Copa Kings at the Highball. Saturday catch Country Willie Edwards at Sagebrush, Shinyribs at the Haute Spot, the all-day Texas metal showcase Lonestar Unleashed with Austin's High Desert Queen, Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol and Skatenigs, Dallas' Wo-Fat and Temptress, Houston's Warlung and tons more, bring your earplugs. Meanwhile the Hot Summer Nights free concert series in the Red River Cultural District is set to return August 4-6.

Questions for the Week:Recently, the streaming platform Spotify removed the music of folk-rock singer Neil Young (at his request). He asked for his music to be taken down as a protest against what he describes as Spotify allowing its exclusive and top performing podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, to spread misinformation about COVID-19 and vaccination. What do you think about this in the broader context of debates around censorship, free speech, and open discussion? I'm not asking for your comments on the Joe Rogan podcast or Neil Young, but rather the way information can be put out on to media platforms while others some things are taken down. Do you think churches should stop doing online services? An Anglican priest recently wrote about why they think online services are now counter productive to being the church because an important part of worship is being present together with our bodies and embodied community. That doesn't mean people shouldn't take precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19. But offering worship services online makes embodiment "elective." What are your thoughts?Special Guest:Kathryn Threadgill, Associate Mission Director, Theology, Formation & Evangelism, PCUSAGuest Question:People have a lot of feelings, positive and negative, about the word "evangelism". Does evangelism have the same meaning as it did say, 50 or 100 years ago? Or has it changed? What does evangelism mean in a modern, progressive Christian context?Resource Roundup:8 Habits of Evangelism

The Houston Decapitator On July 27, 1979, a man named Bob Smith showed up to the 900 block of Glenmont in the Gulfton area of southwest Houston to pick up a co-worker, secretary Alys Elaine Rankin while her car was being repaired. Smith approached the front door which was slightly opened and looked in to see Rankin laying naked on her bed with her feet bound and a pillow covering her upper body, Smith removed the pillow, only to see her head was gone. Smith called 911 and the police arrived to investigate the homicide. Police determined Rankin was sexually assaulted by her attacker and noted that a trail of blood led from the bedroom, through the house, and into the parking lot where the killer had taken her head and fled in his car, the head has never been found. 2 weeks later on August 10, just 2 floors above Rankin, the body of 27-year-old Mary Calcutta was found stabbed to death and sexually assaulted in the bathroom of her apartment. Police noted that Calcutta had fought for her life, harder than any other woman they'd seen, the killer stabbed her so hard he went through her body and bent the blade. Later that day, an exterminator walked into a northwest Houston townhouse and found 26-year-old Doris Lynn Threadgill with her throat slashed so deep that she was almost decapitated. On October 3rd, 1979 alarmed residents just 5 blocks from Threadgill's home heard a woman yell "Help, Don't do this to me." and saw a man wearing a cap dragging a young woman into a house by her hair before a gunshot silenced the woman. Police were called and found no sign of a disturbance and told residents they just heard firecrackers, but police later found blood on the porch. 4 miles away in Watonga Park, 16-year-old Joann Huffman was found shot to death the next day. Simultaneously, the police were called to a used car lot in the 4200 block of Mangum where the sales manager reported finding a white Dodge smeared with blood. Inside the trunk, Huffman's boyfriend, 18-year-old Robert Spangenberger was found headless...
