Today you have the pleasure of learning more about Slade Cleaves. He picked these five records: SWORDFISHTROMBONES – TOM WAITS NEBRASKA - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS - WOODY GUTHRIE MISSION OF THE CROSSROADS PALMS - STEVE FORBERT DEAR DANGER- BILLY HARVEY Joseph Hudak of Rolling Stone Country calls Cleaves “a master storyteller, one influenced not by the shine of pop-culture but by the dirt of real life.” While he released a handful of recordings during the early '90s, he gained significant notice with No Angel Knows, which was released on Rounder's Philo subsidiary in 1997. Joined by former Lucinda Williams guitarist and producer Gurf Morlix, and combined his interest in folk songs, early rock and roll, and traditional country music into an amalgamation of styles becoming known at that time as Americana. After reading in Rolling Stone about Bruce Springsteen's inspirations for the Nebraska album, he climbed into his parents' attic to rediscover the treasure trove of albums which he recalled hearing as a child – Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry - and which became his guide to becoming a stellar songwriter. After signing with Jimmy LaFave's Music Road Records, he issued Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away (2009, featuring liner notes from fan Stephen King), the two-disc Sorrow & Smoke: Live at the Horseshoe Lounge (2011), and Still Fighting the War (2013), produced by beloved Austin guitarist Scrappy Jud Newcomb. The album was praised as "one of the year's best albums" by American Songwriter and "carefully crafted, . . . songs about the struggles of the heart in hard times" by the Wall Street Journal. The New York Daily News called his music "a treasure hidden in plain sight," while the Austin Chronicle declared, "there are few contemporaries that compare. He's become a master craftsman on the order of Guy Clark and John Prine." I would like to mention that there are no advertisements in this podcast. I have a truckload of fun doing this but it takes at least 20 hours to research, listen, record, edit, and produce each episode. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes and this is the 100th episode! Thank you so much for listening to each episode. On Aug. 4, I moderated a conversation with University of Tulsa President Brad Carson at the Tulsa Press Club for one of its Page One events. I got to know Brad over 20 years ago when he was running for Congress. We hadn't talked in 19 years, so I really enjoyed the opportunity to catch up and learn about where life and his work has taken him before he landed at TU last July. In this conversation, the Jenks graduate reflects on his time in Congress, including being in his capitol building office on 9/11. Brad discusses how politics have changed since he served. He talks about why he joined the Navy in 2008 and his work under President Obama running the Army. Brad also shares his thoughts on the college landscape, including NCAA sports, and his vision for TU. Following our talk at the Press Club, hear a new song from Monica Taylor. A Perkins, OK native, Monica Taylor's musical roots are at The Farm, which is still the epicenter of Red Dirt Music. Her nickname, The Cimarron Songbird, was given to her by Jimmy LaFave and Bob Childers, thanks to her distinctive singing style and her home near the Cimarron River. She sings from the heart, telling stories of red dirt roads, home, fence posts, trains, and sharing her Cherokee Indian heritage as well as her Scottish roots. Monica's new album Trains, Rivers and Trails, which includes the track you're about to hear, is now available at HortonRecords.org.

There were many changes afoot when singer/songwriter Caelin moved to Austin in 2015 from the Bay Area. Kevin's songs have been covered by a long string of artists over the last 40 years, including Roger Miller, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, The Judds, Bobby Bare, Ray Price, The Highwaymen (Willie, Waylon, Cash and Kristofferson), Linda Ronstadt, Solomon Burke, Garth Brooks, to name a few. In 2018-19 Chris Stapleton recorded and released his song “Millionaire”, which stayed on the Billboard Chart for over 50 weeks and made it to #2 and had over 5.7 million views on YouTube. Kevin came out from behind the curtain in 1990 and recorded two records for Warner/Reprise, Kevin Welch and Western Beat. In the mid-90s he co-founded the Americana flagship indie label Dead Reckoning Records, and released Life Down Here On Earth, Beneath My Wheels, and Millionaire, which was cut in Denmark and Nashville with the band known then as The Danes. Along with label partner Kieran Kane came 11/12/13: Live in Melbourne, and then three successive records with Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin, You Can't Save Everybody, Lost John Dean, and Kane Welch Kaplin. The trio were nominated two years in a row for Best Group by the Americana Music Association. In 2008 he relocated to the Hill Country of Texas and made one record outside of the Dead Reckoning fold for his friend Jimmy LaFave, A Patch Of Blue Sky, and later, back to Dead Reckoning with the most recent, Dust Devil. He offers one on one songwriting sessions and workshops, to find out more about opportunities to learn from and work with Kevin, check out his website. Anthony da Costa is already on his way. He’s only 26 and is a graduate of Columbia University in NYC. He’s lived in NYC, Austin and now resides in Nashville. He’s been a sideman guitar slinger for Jimmy LaFave, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz. He adds his own wonderful ethereal style to every performance and recording. Oh yeah, he’s also a phenomenal singer and songwriter. He’s currently working on a new solo record produced by Kenneth Pattengale of The Milk Carton Kids. We were lucky to get Anthony to come in to our podcast on one of his rare days off. Enjoy!

(See videos of Jimmy here) The last few years we’ve been in the studio with Jimmy, recording a cut with him on his Jackson Browne Tribute album, and two songs on his most recent album release. Back in the 80’s my high school best friend and I would take our strings downtown and sit in at the Chicago House open mike frequently hosted by Jimmy Lafave. Years later I ran into Jimmy at a live KGSR radio tribute to Bob Dylan; from that radio show the first season of Strings Attached was born. Here are a few songs I arranged for that first show back in 2001:Never is a MomentWhen It Starts to Rain (KUT Radio Appearance)Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe. It’s a show full of interesting remakes today on this "Cover Me" show.

It’s ramblin’ old Bobby D’s 72nd birthday tomorrow, and what else could we do but pay tribute in a way that only we can (or dare to.) There’s some reverence and some ridiculousness, of course. We’ve also got some world class Winnipeg music that’s every bit as great as that old coot, and a couple from the Canadian Bob Dylan (only better)!

It’s back to school time, and while I don’t expect any sympathy from anyone, perhaps we can all use a good set of picker-upper favourites to start the day, so we shall provide one for any occasion. If that didn’t do the trick, surely the great new music or the exciting upcoming shows should, or perhaps a tribute to my wonderful son Jeremy, who is having his 4th birthday party today!

Tonight, a tribute to Big Daddy Damon Mitchell, show previews featuring Romi Mayes, The Weber Brothers, and Joshua Cockerill’s new project Animal Parts, as well as anticipated new albums by Jimmy Lafave and Danny Michel, and a tribute to the late, great Joe South.

We don’t really get excited about sports around here very often, but today the Bombers are playing for the Grey Cup, and they can use all the help they can get. With that in mind, we send out a set of Blue & Gold songs that will hopefully help the boys win the big game. There are a couple of shows this week that we’re excited about, including the return of our pal Andy Sheppard and his new project Find the Others, and the legendary Gordon Lightfoot!

We're certifying fall as officially here, as the busy late summer concert concert season is winding down. Sure, there are a couple of shows this week, including The Deep Dark Woods and Kent McAlister, but for the most part, we looked back at great shows past, and heard some great new music.

A bit of an abbreviated podcast this week, since we had trouble with the station's digital recorder/podcast maker thingy and part of the show didn't get recorded (a good reminder to listen live, whenever you can, because it was good!). You still get some upcoming show info, music from the mailbag, a brief tribute to Richard Thompson, and a look at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, going on tonight!
