James Todd Smith (born January 14, 1968), known professionally as LL Cool J (short for Ladies Love Cool James),[3] is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor.[4] He is one of the earliest rappers to achieve commercial success, alongside fellow new school hip hop acts Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. Signed to Def Jam Recordings in 1984, LL Cool J's breakthrough came with his single "I Need a Beat" and his landmark debut album, Radio (1985). He achieved further commercial and critical success with the albums Bigger and Deffer (1987), Walking with a Panther (1989), Mama Said Knock You Out (1990), Mr. Smith (1995), and Phenomenon (1997). His twelfth album, Exit 13 (2008), was his last in his long-tenured deal with Def Jam. LL Cool J has appeared in numerous films, including Halloween H20, In Too Deep, Any Given Sunday, Deep Blue Sea, S.W.A.T., Mindhunters, Last Holiday, and Edison. He played NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna in the CBS crime drama television series NCIS: Los Angeles. LL Cool J was also the host of Lip Sync Battle on Paramount Network.[5][6] A two-time Grammy Award winner, LL Cool J is known for hip hop songs such as "Going Back to Cali", "I'm Bad", "The Boomin' System", "Rock the Bells", and "Mama Said Knock You Out", as well as R&B hits such as "Doin' It", "I Need Love", "Around the Way Girl" and "Hey Lover". In 2010, VH1 placed him on their "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time" list.[7] In 2017, LL Cool J became the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors.[8] In 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an award for Musical Excellence.[9] PICTURE: By U.S. State Department - https://www.flickr.com/photos/statephotos/38832214941/in/photolist-22ayQ4r-215bWSS-22atfBg, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=76810126 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thequeensnewyorker/message

G.O.A.T. - Greatest Of All Time. A phrase popularized by an emcee out of Queens, New York City. One of the first rappers to release his album with the iconic Def Jam Records. This week we are talking about one of the greats, nothing new there, but this week we are talking about the GOAT, LL Cool J. Ladies Love Cool James aka LL Cool J aka James Todd Smith. Born in 1964 in Bay Shore, New York, raised in Queens, signed to Def Jam in 1984, LL is now largely known as the NCIS special Agent Sam Hanna on NCIS: Los Angeles, but hip hop fans know him as the fierce emcee who released Radio in 1985, Mama Said Knock You Out in 1990 and so much more. LL Cool J is a national treasure. Thank you LL for always keeping it hip hop in everything you do. whether it's the characters you embody, or when you hosted the Grammys, you are always authentically you, and authentically hip hop. Thank you. And thank you for listening to this episode of hip hop history. Please like, subscribe and leave a review where possible. Thank you and have a great day.

Ladies Love Cool James, but the rapper, producer, actor, radio host, and all-around entrepreneur is an icon for rap lovers alike. This week marks the 34th anniversary of LL Cool J’s debut album Radio, which was received with critical acclaim and contributed to the solidification of rap as a genre of music. LL signed to Def Jam Records when it was a fledgling hip-hop label, and later turned to acting as he made his debut in movies and TV shows like NCIS. The Grammy Award-winning artist emceed for the show multiple times, and stays classic rather than fitting into a new school or old school style. This mentality led him to a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and earned him the Kennedy Center Honors a year later, marking him as the first rapper to achieve the recognition. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas sat down with LL to discuss his current projects and play a little game that’s a twist on the usual. The trio dive into the episode with the quick hits, starting with 424’s collab with adidas on the SC Premiere and Pro models (8:24). LL shares his thoughts on the shoes and how the recent announcement of adidas and Prada’s collab shows that classic hip-hop is culture. The Question of the Week (QOTW) asked listeners “Who’s the greatest rapper/actor of all time?” with LL weighing in on their rankings (37:22). LL moves on to his hefty purchases in “What’d You Cop?” including sweatshirts from Feature, a couple Rhude pieces, some Murakami skateboards, and a few jewel-encrusted portrait paintings by Fab Five Freddy (43:48). Stay tuned for the next QOTW which will be posted on Highsnobiety’s Instagram, and leave a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode. A couple of weeks ago when we're discussing Prince's estate trademarking the color purple, I mention the estate filing a lawsuit against for Domain Capital for cybersquatting. Long story short. Domain Capital loaned money to the previous owner of prince.com. (The previous owner was not Prince) The previous owner defaulted on their loan payments and Domain Capital took over the domain. It's very interesting to note that the domain has been registered since 1995 and Prince in his lifetime never attempted to purchase the domain. Last week I learned that LL Cool J is bringing legal action against the founders of Rock the Bells music festival. He is suing them for trademark infringement, false designation of origin affiliation or association, cyberpiracy and unfair competition. He is also requesting an injunction. Ladies Love Cool James has a lot of claims in his complaint but today we are going to focus on one. Cybersquatting. Cybersquatting is the practice of registering names, especially well-known company or brand names, as Internet domains, in the hope of reselling them at a profit. Top 3 Takeaways 1. Purchasing domains with the intent to sell to the highest buyer is cybersquatting. 2. Register your trademarks with USPTO to strengthen your cybersquatting claim and overall complaint. 3. Ask before you leap. Contact the domain owner before you pursue litigation. The domain owner could have a legitimate purpose for the domain. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The director of Die Hard took a hard slide and remade a cult classic. The original was about the proliferation of violence in sports and media in general. The re-make was about 90 minutes that we're never getting back. It's a movie where we're supposed to believe that 'dead behind the eyes' Chris "channeling my best Keanu impression" Klein is the same age as Ladies Love Cool James... and it just goes downhill from there.
