We dip into cinematic classics of the silent age (before people learned how to talk) with 1923 classic SALOMÉ, co-directed by married couple Charles Bryant and Alla Nazimova. The latter stars as the titular SALOMÉ, a Bible character who has achieved historical infamy despite not being officially referred to by her first name. The story is provocative: a teenage princess dances seductively for her stepfather King Herod who promises her anything in reward; she picks the head of prophet John the Baptist, who is summarily executed and presented to her on a platter. Bryant and Nazimova's SALOMÉ takes cues from the Oscar Wilde play on the subject, adding extra-historical depth to the characters to portray Herod's throne in the throes of self destructive decadence. Male characters are simpering and devilishly gay (note that Alla Nazimova herself was openly bisexual, so this feels like intentional camp rather than homophobia.) Fashions are extravagant and imaginative, seeming both historical and futuristic. Physical acting is taken to extremes: SALOMÉ is a truly exciting watch, showcasing how much depth of character is possible from a silent film. To watch SALOMÉ is to not only experience an avant-garde take on Bible story, but also to see human ingenuity on full display with no boundaries to self expression despite limitations by emerging technology. Unrelated, in this episode the Bible Boys also discuss our new obsessions in ultra contemporary media: Harmony Korine's BABY INVASION and teen orthodox Jewish influencer Flynn Goldstein. Look at our [stuff]! Yes, it's time for Pop Screen to don its neon balaclava and tackle one of the most iconic and divisive pop movies of the 2010s - Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers. With Selena Gomez and Gucci Mane in the cast, Skrillex on the soundtrack and James Franco playing a character who is legally distinct from Riff Raff, it has more showbiz connections than you'd expect from a director whose previous movie was shot on VHS and involved people in latex masks having sex with garbage bags.Join Graham and Robyn as they discuss the film's value as a time capsule, the past and future of its mostly Disney Channel-drawn stars, Korine's journey from Kids screenwriter to EDGLRD (yes, that is the name of his streaming service) and so much more. We also hear a joke about John Landis that genuinely appalls Graham, and the police show up. Not a moment too soon.If you want to add to the tally we've got from robbing a convenience store, we have a Patreon where you can find an exclusive bonus episode of this very show every single month, plus weekly written pieces on Red Dwarf, The Twilight Zone and The X-Files, our Fantastic Asia column on classic Asian genre cinema, and much more. We are still in the month of horror and Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk about all the horrific and supernatural offerings getting upgrades this month. Not to mention Harmony Korine and Rob Lowe as a hockey player. But moving on from that the pair discuss the Hellraiser series and their lack of enthusiasm for even M. Night Shyamalan's better films. They talk about the surprise hit of the summer of 1990, one of the films that established the horror genre and another that took it to such uncomfortable lengths Erik has to dare himself to watch it. There's also Robert Zemeckis, Joe “3-star” Johnston and even some ‘80s teen shenanigans not involving death and murder. 0:00 - Intro 1:25 – Criterion (Gummo) 6:43 – Kino (Up the Creek, Youngblood, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari) 29:50 – Disney (The Sixth Sense 4K, Signs 4K) 47:29 – Paramount (Ghost 4K) 59:13 - Warner Archive (The Hitcher 4K) 1:12:46 – Arrow (Hellraiser Quartet of Torment 4K ) 1:32:44 - Shout: Death Becomes Her 4K/The Wolfman 4K 1:56:33 – New Theatrical and TV Titles On Blu-ray 2:02:43 – New Blu-ray Announcements
Phoebe Bridgers! Snail Mail! Fred Durst?! The list of Pop Screen-qualifying cast members is only the beginning of the weirdness in Jane Schoenbrun's sophomore film I Saw the TV Glow. Released in the UK after a wait almost as punishing as the film's devastating time-jumps, it's the story of two kids who really, really like a TV show. That is, if you're satisfied with a surface-level reading. If you're not, allow Graham and Robyn to take you through the film's multitude of trans and queer readings, its nods to 1990s telefantasy classics from Buffy to Twin Peaks, its use of - and critique of the abuses of - nostalgia, its subtle coding of each time period it's set in, and of course its soundtrack, whose mix of modern artists and '90s vibes has already made it a cult classic independent of the film it's soundtracking. We also discuss Harmony Korine's short films, the weirdness of early internet video and so much more. It's for the ladies, the fellas and the people who don't give a [censored] - which, we now realise, is an acknowledgement of nonbinary identity. Who knew? After the success of Kids, Harmony Korine doubles down on his next film. Now sitting in the director's seat, Korine proclaims he "hates art" and decides to trash any traditional film tropes to create "perfect nonsense" with Gummo, a fictional/documentary-style snapshot of the tornado-wrecked American town of Xenia, Ohio. Non-narrative, non-linear, with no protagonist or antagonist but an amalgamation of characters that live in the dark corners of Americana. We're back! The boys from DBV took a trip waaaaay out to the East End of Toronto to see Harmony Korine's infrared synth wave freakout! It's (sort of) about an assassin who goes on a mission to fight a giant bad guy (maybe?). It's a whole lot of weirdness in a very short episode! Enjoy!

Throw on a skimpy swimsuit, ready the beer bong, and get ready to ride the seasonal waves cause we're back with another round of "Four Seasons Of Film!" To kick off this round, we're basking in the "vibey vibe" and raucous sun-soaked shenanigans of Harmony Korine's 2012 banger, Spring Breakers! The film is a pop-art anthem translated into a cinematic tone poem that's captured in that poetic catch-what-you-can way and laced with the kinda oh-so Korine dialogue and Americana kitsch. Don't let looks deceive you; this flick is deceptively deep, building itself up as a heightened-reality fable about temptation and the corruption of innocence and an ode to adolescent antics & inebriation (and their consquences), and we can't wait to (sprang) break it all down! So come on in, the water's F-I-N-E: fine

Ten thousand spectators gathered by the side of the Thames on 19th October, 2003 to watch street magician/illusionist David Blaine come back down to Earth, having spent 44 days suspended in a perspex box in a stunt called ‘Above The Below'. It was an accomplishment almost sabotaged by the British tabloid media and general public, who had heckled him, tried to dismantle his crane, and even flown up a hamburger on a drone to taunt him. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask why Londoners were so hostile to this performance art unfolding in their midsts; explain what Dizzee Rascal had to do with it all; and reveal exactly how Blaine did a wee, whilst suspended in mid-air… Further Reading: • ‘Above the Below' - David Blaine's Official Website: https://davidblaine.com/above-the-below/ • ‘Remembering David Blaine's 44 days in a glass box, which frustrated the British public like no other act of performance art' (The Independent, 2018): https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/features/david-blaine-london-glass-box-stunt-reaction-starvation-above-below-a8523606.html • ‘David Blaine - Above the Below' (Harmony Korine, 2003): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki5fRls2uv4 ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?'
