Hi guys!  The junk drawer is one of those areas that requires a lot of maintenance.  But if you use this hack with binder clips, your junk drawer will go a lot longer without needing attention.   Here are your steps:  Purchase label maker, binder clips, drawer organizers that fit in your drawer Take everything out of the drawer Vacuum and wipe it out Be selective and instinctive about what you put back in the drawer Throw the rest away, or put it where it goes Create labels with arrows for the binder clip Clip the binder clip onto the side of the drawer organizer Here's a link to the label maker I mention in the episode:  Here's the link to the containers I was talking about... https://amzn.to/3rckEjD I can always be reached at amber@declutteryourchaos.com Hope this helps you! Episode: 00134 Release Date: November 21, 2022 Description: Jennifer Loper, one of the driving forces that gave us two amazing websites: the Arizona Association of Crime Analysts (AACA) and IACA! In this episode, Jennifer gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how each of these websites were developed, how they're maintained, and their current functionalities for their members. Jennifer's badge story involves pattern identification, one of the most important skills for an analyst, and how it led to the apprehension of a male subject who was targeting older women's purses at grocery stores. Jennifer and Jason discuss the benefits of getting involved with professional associations, or at least being active, not just having that tick on your resume stating you're in an association. Jennifer is currently a crime analyst with the Peoria (AZ) Police Department.  CHALLENGE: There are Easter eggs in one of the tables of the Excel chapter that Jason wrote for the IACA textbook. Prophecy Radio episode #57 does a Deep Dive on Hermes, which couldn't come at a better time since Lin-Manuel Miranda was just cast in the role for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show airing on Disney+ in 2024. In addition to talking about this latest bit of news, we also discuss the cover for Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 11. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:39) Read Riordan posted Ares' guide to fatherhood, and it's just about as helpful as you would think. What did you think of the new Ares/Clarisse artwork? They also posted the cover for Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, the sequel to City of the Plague God. Sarwat is super excited for this book, and so are we! Did you catch the video of Rick trolling us for the big casting announcement? Okay, let's talk about the November 7 blog post. Yes, Lin-Manuel Miranda has been cast as Hermes in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This is quite a surprise, since in the books, he doesn't show up until Sea of Monsters. What could this mean for the rest of the casting, especially the Big Three? We love that Lin's kid is a fan of the books! What scene could Percy, Annabeth, and Hermes have together? Annabeth's reaction to Hermes is going to be VERY interesting. Deadline has a better description of Hermes' role in the show. Becky reminds everyone to be kind, and we discuss why some people aren't happy about the casting. Deep Dive: Hermes (00:26:12) Let's find out how Hermes ended up going to Juvie. Literally, what is Hermes NOT the god of?? We really love learning new words, can't you tell? Wait. One of his symbols is the WHAT? Hermes accomplished a lot as a baby and none of it was good. IS Hermes the god of cheeseburgers!? It's cool that Argus is tied into this myth, and we can't wait to see how he's portrayed in the show. Hermes could seriously use a little self-reflection. He's had a lot of children with a lot of women, and not all of it was consensual. As always, please bear with us regarding the pronunciation. We're trying! At what times does Hermes show up throughout the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles? We also get Hermes' physical description, and it reminds us of someone who is decidedly not Lin-Manuel Miranda. Can Hermes unlock any phone or computer? How do their powers work with modern technology? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:49:11) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 11. Thank goodness for Blackjack because he saved the day multiple times. Are we more or less annoyed at Clarisse after this chapter? Oh, it's PERSONAL between Percy and the Minotaur. The necklaces on the Minotaur's axe?? OH, IT'S ON. How do those spoils of war work? Was the battle with the Minotaur anticlimactic, or was this on purpose? Percy has given Ethan SO many chances, the least he could do is NOT stab Annabeth!! Is it Kronos or the Kool-Aid Man? YOU DECIDE! The realities of war are heavy in this chapter, and it's especially hard when you're battling your friends and peers. Yet another named character has bitten the dust. Stakes are high. It's a good thing Pegasi gallop when they fly because the alternative is a little strange to imagine. Feedback (01:20:04) Nicolaas reminds us that we'll see the video shield again in the “Staff of Hermes” short story. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 58, where we'll come up with some recipes we think are worthy of the gods. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome back to The Junk Drawer! This is a regular feature of the blog in which I toss up a smorgasbord of thoughts and musings for your consideration, as well as personal news and updates from my little corner of the world.Let's open up the drawer…The 36th RevolutionI recently turned 36. You may have read my essay about it. I'm quite grateful to have made it this far in life and with my happiness and authenticity in tact, a marker that would be inconceivable to the vast majority of closeted trans people in the not-so-distant past. I am a lucky woman, and I know that. Although I did a birthday fundraiser for Running Start (thank you to all who donated), many of you emailed to ask if you could buy me a birthday drink, which is incredibly sweet. I didn't respond to any of those emails because I was quite busy over the past few weeks, and it felt a bit greedy to accept that kindness, I guess? So, here's my honest answer: this blog pays my bills. It ain't a tremendous amount of money, but I consider myself lucky to be able to write for a living and pay my rent in doing so. If you were one of the lovely folks who sent an email asking if you could buy me a birthday drink, here's my respectful request: consider a paid subscription. Help me to keep writing and do advocacy work with the rest of my time. I'd so appreciate it.Reflecting on “Ordinary People”…I recently rewatched Robert Redford's 1980 directorial debut. I remained astonished at the complexity of Mary Tyler Moore's performance. The french toast scene. The family photographs scene. The hug scene. Oh my god, the hug scene. She should have won the Oscar on that moment alone. The film is something like watching springs be wrapped around oneself and pulled tighter and tighter and finally let go in a sequence of flat-out phenomenal bits of acting. I wasn't alive when the film was released, but I've been reading about how the public's reception to her performance was considerable discomfort. It was, apparently, shocking to people that Mary Tyler Moore would play a cold mother — or, as reasonable adults might say, a human being feeling human being things. Also: I love Donald Sutherland so much. He has a strikingly comforting presence in the film. Whenever his character is onscreen, there's a palpable sense of safety. I don't know how to adequately explain it, but his character just makes me feel better.A bird in the cam is worth two minutes in your feedI came across this video from a Spanish bird enthusiast who uses an app called Nest Box Live to film bird nests. In the following video, over two minutes, a mother bird builds her nest, lays her eggs, hatches them, and then feeds her babies over the course of seven weeks until they're strong enough to fly out on their own.It is, by far, one of the most interesting videos I've ever seen.Jon Stewart and John Oliver go all-in on trans rightsIt's been a pretty brutal year on the trans rights front. At every level of government, Republican politicians have taken square aim at the rights of trans and nonbinary people. Some cultural public figures—like J.K. Rowling and Dave Chappelle and Bill Maher—have openly expressed viciously transphobic views. And all the while, it honestly feels as though much of the mainstream media landscape is largely disinterested in educating the public about trans issues in the face of such hatred. This has all combined into a terrifying era for our community, one in which it feels as though so much hangs on the precipice of the next few election cycles.I'll be honest: until recently, I have wondered if Jon Stewart would eventually emerge as something in the same vein. Fortunately, I could not have been more wrong in that concern.Stewart did an entire episode around the topic of trans rights, took responsibility for some of this own transphobic humor earlier in his career, and did the work of learning and listening to trans people and their families, particularly the parents of trans children.Y'all really do need to watch the entire episode, but take special notice of his interview with Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge and her complete lack of preparation to discuss the health care of trans children, which she has so viciously sought to dismantle.Last week, not to be outdone by his friend and colleague, John Oliver dedicated his own episode to discussing the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of anti-trans Republican legislators and spent 26 minutes educating the public in a manner I have scarcely seen this year from anyone in mainstream media. Click below to watch.I can't adequately explain how much of a breath of fresh air these two segments have been to the trans and nonbinary community. We have been terrified of what comes next for us in this country. There are families who have contacted me and asked if they should consider moving to a country with more affirming policies for trans and nonbinary people, and I honestly didn't know what to tell them.I love this country so much. In spite of this horror, I believe in the promise of this country. I really do. I believe that America can be a place where everyone is permitted to live in their full authenticity, free of violence and discrimination and shame in response to that authenticity.I'm glad Stewart and Oliver are fighting for that promise. I'm grateful for them.Thoughts on the Twitter news…I'll have more to say about this soon, but I do want to make something perfectly clear to all: I am not leaving Twitter. Hell no. Folks have good reasons to leave, and those reasons are valid. I respect those who want to leave. And folks have good reasons to stay, too.Fighting disinformation and holding the line against bad faith in the public square is worth the fight. I'm absolutely staying. Let's respect and honor each others' choices. To those who may leave or are considering it and wanna stay in touch with me, here are some ways:This blog, of course. Shoot me an email: cmclymer@gmail.comBooks I'm reading lately…“And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle” by Jon Meacham — One of the most well-known living presidential historians has finally released his Lincoln biography. It's exquisite and searingly honest. Readers will notice the not-so-subtle warnings from Meacham about the long history of white supremacy in our country and how it still threatens to undo the progress we've had since.“Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion” by Gabrielle Blair — Based on the author's legendary and prescient Twitter thread in 2018, Blair explores the responsibility of cis men in the family planning discussion. She does so with startling clarity and a wealth of empathy for all involved. A must read.“Mad Honey” by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan — These two are among my favorite writers, and I was delighted when I found out they were collaborating on a novel together. The work is brilliant. It centers the evolution of a family as it breaks a few bones and attempts to reset them, and it does a fantastic job of getting at the pain of shattering cycles.Where I'm gonna be in the near future…Oct. 29: 2022 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner (Washington, D.C.)Nov. 9: District of Columbia Commission on Human Rights Awards Gala: 35 Years of Moving Towards Equality (Washington, D.C.)Nov. 11: HBCU Women's Leader Summit, jointly hosted by Xceleader and Running Start (Washington, D.C.)Nov. 17: 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) satellite event at American University. [Hey there! This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]I'm introducing a new feature called The Junk Drawer. You know, that kitchen drawer where you stuff everything that doesn't have an intuitive place elsewhere in your home? Old hot sauce packets? Spare change and batteries? Unfamiliar kitchen utensils that lack a clear purpose but vaguely seem at home in a kink seminar? Also: the drawer for those who are lazy and need a place to put random things. (Me.)This feature will be a weekly thing that offers odds and ends, mostly just interesting stuff that may not merit a larger essay but nonetheless makes me think or laugh or otherwise feel something.I'll also include any upcoming events I'll be doing and personal news. Here's a cool feature of this: all are encouraged to submit items for consideration in The Junk Drawer. See something quirky or notable? Send it to me, and I'll write it up as an item and credit you. (Email: cmclymer@gmail.com)Lizzo plays a flute and some conservatives play themselvesOn Tuesday night, Lizzo played a show at the Capitol One Arena here in D.C. — she was predictably fantastic, especially a segment in which she introduced, on behalf of the Library of Congress, a crystal flute once owned by James Madison from the early 1800s. She then became the first person ever to play it. She was magnificent. You can watch the full segment here, and you absolutely should.A number of conservative commentators complained loudly that she “disrespected history” by playing the flute, though they failed to elaborate on how it was disrespectful. One commentator—to whom I will not link—claimed that her playing the flute was an attempt to humiliate white people.I'm white, and I was at the show. I did not get the memo that Lizzo was attempting to humiliate me by playing a flute. She came across, however, as a history nerd and a music nerd and a nerd to whom I aspire in my own nerdiness.Seriously, watch the damn video. It'll make you smile.I'm not a fan of performative hurricane coverageThis week saw the landfall of Hurricane Ian, the second major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic season. It hit Southwest Florida at Category 4 strength on Weds. afternoon and barreled up the state over the following 24 hours, leaving in its wake widespread death and destruction. Some experts predict it will be the largest hurricane economic loss in the state's history. Karen Clark & Co, a catastrophe modeling firm, estimated the economic loss would be $63 billion and the total economic damage to “well over $100 billion”.While the hurricane made landfall, the trope of vulnerable human beings reporting in the thick of it seemed to endure with no expectation of ever stopping.Admittedly, I have never understood the appeal of watching some poor soul in a light parka needlessly stand outside in the middle of a hurricane to tell millions of folks watching at home that hurricanes are, in fact, quite dangerous. This isn't a gospel that needs evangelists.Like, does anyone really think someone tuned into The Weather Channel today because they were skeptical about the lethality of a Category 4 hurricane? No, of course not. This is all entertainment. It's a show. And it's very weird that we all just kinda go along with it.About that hero Coast GuardsmanIn the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, U.S. Coast Guardsman Zach Loesch received a call from President Biden thanking him for his lifesaving rescue efforts. Rightwing media then jumped on this, pointing out that Loesch is expected to be separated from service within days due to his refusal to take the COVID vaccine. Here are a few of those headlines:Fox News: “Biden thanks Coast Guard rescuer for hurricane heroics days before firing over vaccine policy”New York Post: “Biden thanks Coast Guard member for hurricane rescue — days before vax mandate firing”You get the picture. But what they won't tell you is that this Coast Guardsman, when he enlisted in the military and began basic training, took vaccines for:-- adenovirus-- influenza-- measles-- meningococcal-- mumps-- polio-- rubella-- tetanus-diphtheria-- varicellaThey won't tell you that this Coast Guardsman was then required to take an annual influenza shot and--if he deployed--more than likely took additional vaccinations. So, this Coast Guardsman has no problem with vaccinations. He's only doing this out of extreme partisanship. This Coast Guardsman is not above the rules. He is not a special snowflake. He does not get preferential treatment because his politics are misaligned with common sense public health policies reasonably implemented by the military. So, when you see some conservatives today inevitably claim that "a hero's career is being destroyed" over not taking the COVID vaccine, remember that he didn't have this issue with vaccines before now. He made this choice all by himself and for selfish reasons.Personal news…My birthday is next week! I'll be turning 36 on October 12th. It's host Bree Davies' Sweet 16 sober anniversary and she's ready to celebrate! Because not-drinking can sound like a drag, Bree wanted to shed some light on what can make a bar inviting to those who don't imbibe. She invited friend of the show, Artistic Director at the Sie Film Center AND fellow non-drinker, Keith Garcia, to chat about how to go out on a Friday night and find fun in Denver, whether you choose to drink or not.  Keith mentioned the monthly-ish queer-centered dance party Junk Drawer and the new event space slash hair salon Scorpio Palace on Brighton Boulevard. Bree talked about Clearheads, happening this Sunday at Fort Greene; check out our May interview with the party's founder, Jen Korte!
