Welcome to 3 Bad Brothers, A Beastie Boys Breakdown. For the next 8 weeks, the Dad Bod Rap Pod crew and some special guests will be going album by album through the Beastie Boys' career. This week we are focused on Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D's first album, the wildly successful Licensed To Ill with insight from Dante Ross, who ran in the same circles as the Boys at this formative time in their lives. We will track the band from punk shows to NYC nightclubs, to arena tours, examining their rhymes, beats, cultural impact and more through discussion, interviews, and then score each album on a system we affectionately call the Rick Rubric. Licensed to Ill is thought of as one of rap music's early masterpieces, so we re-listen to the seminal album to see how it holds up nearly 40 years later as rap music, as the beginning of a vast and exploratory career, and as a product of early Def Jam Records, the so-called nerve center of the nascent hip-hop industry at the time. Huge thanks to Dante Ross for joining us to provide cultural context and crack jokes. Please tune in next week when we step through the doors of the cult classic Paul's Boutique. Rockin' the Kremlin - Russian Music Industry w/ David Junk - AZ TRT S05 EP37 (253) 9-22-2024 Things We Learned This Week Roger Waters performed The Wall – Live in Berlin after the Fall David Junk went to the concert, & was inspired and moved to Russia, got into Diamond business, then Music Industry with Universal Music David had to establish a legal record market, and had to fight corruption with the Local Mob Record Companies and Artists wanted to grow their fan-base in both Eastern Europe & Russia post the Fall of the Soviet Union Western Music had a huge impact on Russian music, culturally & maturing the industry, which created local Rock Bands & Rap Artists Guest: David Junk Music Business in Russia https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-junk About David Junk is a seasoned music industry veteran with a career spanning thirty years. After the fall of the Soviet Union, David Junk embarked on an extraordinary adventure by becoming one of the first American record executives to work in the Ukrainian music industry. Early Days and Introduction to Ukraine: In 1999 as a record executive for Universal Music, the world's largest record company, David started an initiative to open the first branch of Universal in Ukraine. At the time, no other Western record label had ventured into Ukraine, allowing Russia to control the Ukrainian music market. David played a pivotal role in the early development of the Ukrainian music industry. This opened the door for more Western labels to engage in business in Ukraine. Championing the Ukrainian Music Industry: As Vice President of Universal Music, David had a significant responsibility in overseeing Eastern Europe, with a specific focus on Ukraine. He was instrumental in defending the rights of Ukrainian songwriters and combating music piracy controlled by criminal groups. Under his leadership, Universal Music soared to become Ukraine's most successful international label. This achievement was largely attributed to the Ukrainian youth's love for Hip Hop and rap music from Universal's premier labels, Interscope and Def Jam Records. The world-renowned Black Eyed Peas and rapper 50 Cent graced the Ukrainian music scene, thanks to David's efforts. In 2005, Universal Music extended its support to the Ukrainian Eurovision entry, Green Jolly, when Kyiv hosted the televised event for the very first time. Contributions to the Reggaeton Genre: In 2006, David took on the role of General Manager at Universal's Machete Records in Los Angeles, where he played a crucial part in transforming it into the #1 Reggaeton label in America. His work involved collaborating with renowned artists such as Don Omar and Wisin Y Yandel, further expanding his experiences in the music industry. Gibson Guitars: In 2013, David began a new career chapter, joining Nashville-based Gibson Guitars and managing a guitar showroom from the iconic Hit Factory recording studios in New York City. In this role, David presented honorary guitars to music legends Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Nile Rodgers, Steve Miller, and the band Cheap Trick for their inductions into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also provided guitar support for Blondie, Rush, The Roots, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "School of Rock" Broadway Cast in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Seg 1 David Junk bio, fell into the music business by accident. Most people get into the music business through connections or ex musicians. David worked for universal music, and got into the music business when he was already working in Russia. He was living and working in Moscow and hired by universal music, then called PolyGram for a finance position for the record company. Record label was big, carried the catalogs of Bob Marley deaf jam artist Bon Jovi and was the first musical label in Russia. David went on to become the first CEO of universal music in Russia. David is from Ohio, and grew up during the Cold War with fear of Russia. His influenced by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and his claim that he would not perform the album the wall unless the actual Berlin wall in Germany came down. In 1989 The Berlin wall did come down. Waters staged a concert performing the wall with celebrity ax joining in, called the Potsdam concert. David went to Europe and attended that concert. He was influenced by the moment and returned to America to study business and the Russian language. He got an NBA in California. In 1993 he got a job in Moscow working for a diamond mining company, mining raw diamonds. Russia has large supply of diamonds and Siberia. Unfortunately, the company David was working for turned out to be a huge scam with the Russian bosses stealing $200 million and diamonds. David was arrested and thrown in a Russian jail. Thankfully, the actual criminals were caught and David was let go. The next job we got in Russia was for the music industry. Seg 2 How the music business and record labels work. Record labels make money by marketing. Their big artist as well as music writes with song catalogues. Company David worked for carried many of the big rap artists like Jay Z and Eminem, as well as big bands, like U2 and the cranberries and also catalogs of Johnny Cash. Labels are located in both the US and other countries. I band releases a new album and the record label locate in each country would promote and sell. Record labels want to sign artist to promote internationally to make more sales and exposure to the music. The 1990s both Russia and Eastern Europe were considered one zone and many businesses were trying to expand.throughout. David visited many countries in Eastern Europe as well as former Russian Republic, like Ukraine. At the time there was no infrastructure to sell records. There were no legal record stores and the Russian mafia controlled 90% of the music industry. There was mass piracy with music and CD. David's job working for universal music was to create a legal music industry. Three step process to get the mafia out of the business Legislation - using the Russian Dumba work to create legislation to generate tax revenue off record sales. Country like Sweden was a model with massive revenue from the band ABBA. This failed and corruption issues continued. Police Action - Moscow police raids of piracy locations and confiscate CDs of universal music and other record labels. This partially worked, had some corruption issues. But ultimately it failed to as the pirate factories just moved from the city to military bases. Now they are under protection of the Russian military. U.S. Ambassador - went to the Bush administration to try to block Russia from the WTO world, trade organization. Russia wanted to expand its economy, enjoying the WTO. They leveraged this to push for legal action on music and other industries in Russia. Force the Russian government to protect artist and lessen the corruption. Seg 3 In the late 1980s and 1990s artist were eager to get their music distributed in Russia. They obviously wanted to work with a record company. Do it legal have promotion that was supportive and understanding of their rights. They also understood that the royalties would be less. There was big business though in touring. David's bosses in both Angeles and London cannot understand how powerful mafia was and how deep the corruption was. When bands were touring in Russia mafia would interfere by selling false concert tickets. At the time in the late 1980s and early early 1990s lots of bands were touring in both Russia and Eastern Europe. There were issues. An example of this was David Copperfield Magician tour. At one point, he did not pay the bribes and could not get his equipment out of Russia. He had to actually cancel parts of his European tour. Band sell more records by touring in Russia. 1990s peace festival or Bon Jovi Metallica AC/DC all tour in Russia. Mariah Carey also toured in Russia. Kiss refused in the mid 1990s to Eastern Europe because of the war Yugoslavia. MTV opened in Russia 1999 and this continue to expand music exposure of the west in Russia. Red Hot chili pop performed in the red square. Western music had a huge cultural impact in Russia. David and universal signed the Russian band tattoo. This became the biggest selling Russian band in history. Improved in Russia now that they've been introduced to competition from the west. Better music, better, music, videos, and better songwriting. Music is always had a connection to freedom with artist having the freedom of expression. Hip-hop and rap was introduced to Russia and wound up becoming the most popular music in Russia today. Very much an anti-authority and freedom type music. Russia, creative popular hip-hop band called del. Many acts like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, 50 Cent, Jay Z, Dr. Dre, anime all became big hits in Russia. David left Russia in 2005 and moved on to work for Gibson guitars which ultimately led to his return in 2013. Often on he lived and worked in Russia for 15 years. "One of the most challenging things we deal with is the feeling that it doesn't actually matter how good the work is. As a minority, this is the most defeated we feel. I'm sure our competitors have felt similar feelings as creative professionals, but when you are a minority, it hits differently, and I think it's important to try to understand those differences." — Kenny Gravillis Kenny Gravillis is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Gravillis Inc., a Black-owned LA-based design company known for creating iconic movie posters such as Spike Lee's "Blackkklansman," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Logan," and the original "Avatar." Jake BrennanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jake Brennan. You probably know Jake as the creator and host of the immensley popular Disgraceland podcast; but you are about to learn a bit more about him! In this episode, we chat about Jake growing up in Clinton, Mass. in the burgeoning punk / hardcore scene. We talk about his early musician days with Cast Iron Hike, and Bodega Girls, and what led him in the direction of music in the first place. One of Jake's bands even opened up for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at a Hometown Throwdown! We talk about Victory Records, Island Records, Def Jam Records, and even how George H.W. Bush and the C.I.A. are connected to Bob Marley. We touch on Helter Skelter and Chaos by Tom O'Neill, and how those two stories helped inspire Disgraceland. I get Jake to explain exactly what the hell a MELLOTRON is, and why he decided to rely on it for the opening of his music-based true crime podcast. Then we get into his years with Bodega Girls, and how that came about; before he lets me play my favorite song of theirs (Surf's Up America). Jake explains the origin story of Disgraceland, and we touch on some of my favorite episodes, featuring: Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, and John Denver. I pry into how Double Elvis Media unfolded, and we talk about a few of the podcasts under that banner. Obviously, I have to know all about the April Fool's Day fiasco, and when we can look forward to another one. Super big thanks to Jake for sitting down with me and sharing the details on some of the things that work, and some that don't; when trying to capture the attention of new listeners, plus, what one can expect by being an ALL ACCESS supporter. Be sure to check out Disgraceland, and some of the other Double Elvis pods, including: Badlands, Blood on the Tracks, and The 27 Club.
Born and raised in New York City, Cey Adams emerged from the vibrant graffiti scene of the 1970s while still in his teens, tagging “Cey City” on subway cars and painting murals — and was one of the first wave of street artists to obtain gallery representation. He met the Beastie Boys before they were the Beastie Boys, and designed their first logo, t-shirts and singles. He linked up with Russell Simmons at RUSH Artist Management where he designed logos and merch for an artist roster that included Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Whodini. When Simmons and Rick Rubin launched a little label called Def Jam Records he joined on as creative director. If there's an album from hip-hop's golden era that you love, it probably has Adams' fingerprints all over it. We discuss his career from its earliest days to today, which also includes work with iconic brands and fine art and collage. Russell Simmons co-founded arguably the greatest hip-hop label of all time in 1984 with Def Jam Records. The company guided the careers of groups like Run-DMC, Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, plus rappers Jay-Z, Ja Rule and Kanye West. But Simmons stepped down from his businesses and charities in 2017 following sexual assault allegations by several women. Graham travels to Bali, Indonesia to see what Simmons's life is like now, living in a vegan wellness resort. Simmons discusses his early business success, responds to the allegations, and explains what has caused a dispute over hundreds of millions of dollars with his ex-wife.
B. Cox reminisces about Jay-Z's eight album The Black Album as it turns 20. Heading into this album, it was being touted as Jay-Z last album as he was to "retire" to take up the mantle of president of Def Jam Records after the album was released. The news and fallout from it lead to a acrimonious split of the three founders and owners of Roc-A-Fella Records: Jay, Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. The news of Jay-Z's impending retirement while he was still on top of his game in every aspect, raised the profile of this album to another level. Teaming up with an all-star cast of producers, it was an epic album to say goodbye: mainstays Just Blaze, Kanye West, the Neptunes, Timbaland were on board to produce songs along with newcomers 9th Wonder and the Buchanans along with industry veterans DJ Quik and Rick Rubin. Focusing on his last album, Jay-Z toed the line of lyrically exclaiming his career in review as proud veteran while simultaneously giving us his trademark varied flow and style to show he could still make a hit and be hungry. Noted in the album is a more mature and at peace vibe from Jay-Z as he celebrated and reflected. The album was boosted by three singles: "Change Clothes" feat. Pharrell Williams, "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "99 Problems". The anticipation and acclaimed pushed the album to triple platinum certification. It is noted along with 1996's Reasonable Doubt and 2001's The Blueprint with being Jay-Z's classic albums. The album was also supported by a documentary feature film Fade To Black, which chronicled Jay-Z's "farewell" concert at Madison Square Garden in 2004. History:The Billboard Top Ten Songs chart for 1995 contains the following names: Coolio, TLC, Seal, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and a man named Montell Jordan. This Is How We Do It was a breakout new jack-swing song that topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks and R&B charts for eight. Jordan, tall and handsome with a silky-smooth voice, established himself as a powerful presence in music, brimming with talent, savvy, and charm. Over his nearly twenty-year career in music, Jordan has released seven studio albums, and fourteen singles, and is a Grammy-nominated artist, selling more than 10 million records worldwide. Origins:From South Central Los Angeles to Pepperdine University in Malibu, Montell was on course to attend law school when a professor said one of his biggest regrets was missing the chance to pursue music. In a flash, Montell recognized that if he was ever going to take a shot at music, he needed to do it then. He put together a demo, which eventually landed in the hands of Def Jam Records and Russell Simmons. This Is How We Do It took off, and his first of many number-one singles was born. Following years of awards, achievements, and accolades that never seemed to satisfy, Montell learned that without music, he's a husband, a dad, and a friend. He stepped away from the music business for many years in search of significance over success. “I had to learn who Montell was outside of music to determine that I make music and music doesn't make me.” In that time away, Montell was able to reevaluate his priorities and ultimately find his passion. This was found as he connected with his childhood faith. Ministry:Montell began to realize the difference between gifting and calling. He was gifted with music, but he was called to minister. Speaking, teaching, mentoring, counseling, and writing are some of the many ways Jordan is fulfilling his purpose in ministry today. Jordan now does music again as he has determined both what he is gifted to do and what he is purposed to do and allowed those worlds to meet. Montell served more than 14,000 people from 140 nations around the world each weekend for the last decade as an executive pastor of music, marriage, and men's ministry at Victory World Church in Norcross, GA. He continues to redefine sound through Victory, an ideal place that builds families transforms communities, reconciles cultures, and impacts nations. In his musical past, Montell had already shown an ability to stretch boundaries of genre and style and uses this same ability to influence, impact, and inspire today. Jordan's musical achievements are still recognized worldwide, and he and his wife of 20+ years, Kristin Jordan released a marriage book in October 2017 titled, “Marriage Masterpeace Inc! Making Your Marriage A Masterpeace.” Jordan released his autobiography, “Becoming Unfamous” during the summer of 2016. Montell brings the word of God and personal experience from the music business to provide a practical and applicable understanding of music and worship to light. He still tours on occasion to bring the love of Christ outside the four walls of the church to concert venues all over the world. Montell and Kristin is now a marriage missionary and has founded Marriage Masterpeace Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to help marriages all around the world by helping men and women reconcile with God and then to each other in efforts to eradicate divorce by taking the option off the table. Music:Montell Jordan's latest single, “When I'm Around You” feat. Grammy award-winning rap artist Lecrae is his first R&B song in nearly ten years! The new song is available NOW on all digital platforms and is currently charting on Urban AC radio! The single is modern R&B with a soulful relevancy easily identifiable as classic Montell Jordan. This new song and album are created to be the soundtrack for married couples (and those who desire to be married) by assisting them in keeping passion alive in their re...
Demetrius Daniels was born on October 8, 1975, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in a family that deeply valued music, with his parents, Stanley Daniels and Juanita Hayes, being deeply rooted in gospel music. Demetrius, along with his two younger brothers, grew up attending Church of the First Born Saints, which was their family's home church. Demetrius was a natural singer and joined his church's children's and adult choir, performing many solos. During high school, Demetrius pursued his passion for music and became a member of a group called Dos of Soul, which later signed with Def Jam Records. The group's talent was showcased on the Nutty Professor soundtrack, where they were featured, and they also shot a music video and performed live on BET's Video Soul with Donnie Simpson. He worked with gospel artist Rodney Bryant, Yet Unseen, Kelly Price, Corey Rooney, Prince Markie D (from the Fat Boys), Lyon Cohen, Max Sigel, and Russell Simmons due to his singing and writing skills. He shared the stage with Case, Foxy Brown, Mary J. Blige, and many others. Demetrius' story continues. He is working back in the studio and will have new music soon. It was only a matter of time before Spike Lee decided to make his own ode to basketball. Unfortunately, his script here is just not up to par, which is a shame, because underneath the flash and messy storytelling, there's a really interesting story about fathers and sons. Denzel is bringing his best, as usual, and the supporting cast is doing their absolute best. Even Ray Allen, who's definitely not an actor, still has flashes of brilliance as he relaxes into the role. And Spike's directing has so much thought and care, particularly in his use of score. But none of that matters when the movie just doesn't have a whole lot to say. Check the ball and post up as we discuss 1998's He Got Game this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Executive Producer, TV host and podcast personality Carlos King is one of the busiest men in the industry! In this sit down with Jimmy, Carlos traces the beginnings of his career back to him completely hustling the system to land a coveted internship at Def Jam Records. Before too long he found his way to The Real Housewives of Atlanta where he began at the very bottom of the food chain before rising to become the show's showrunner. Carlos then launched his production company and never looked back creating series such as OWN's Love & Marriage franchise and as well as Belle Collective. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of racism, childhood grief, dysfunctional families, parental anger, drugs, poverty, grief, loss. After another Spike masterpiece (one we've both seen already), Spike geared up for one of his most personal projects to date. Written as a TV pilot by Spike's sister Joie and brother Cinqué, Spike reigns everything back in to show a family, both good and bad, living in Brooklyn in 1973. It moves more like a series of scenes than an actual movie, but the characters here are among some of his best, and Spike is willing to lay everything in front of us: the anger, the dysfunction, the sorrow, and the love. It doesn't hurt that he's got Alfre Woodard and Delroy Lindo as the parents either, nor an outstanding child performance from Zelda Harris. It's a really good movie, subtle but true and a delight to watch. Turn the TV off and make sure you clean your dishes as we discuss 1994's Crooklyn this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! What happens when we take away the writer and ask two groundbreaking producers, from two different generations, to interview each other? On this episode of Rolling Stone's Musicians on Musicians, also running as a special series in the Rolling Stone Music Now feed, Rick Rubin and Finneas talk about how they work in the studio, their listening habits, and the frustrations and the joy involved in making great music. Rick Rubin started Def Jam Records out of his NYU dorm room in the 1980s, and went on to produce classic albums by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash and many others. He's still going strong: In addition to his continued collaboration with groups like the Chili Peppers and The Strokes, his book The Creative Act hits bookstores in 2023. Rubin sat down with a young talent making waves of his own: Finneas O'Connell. Finneas produced his sister Billie Eilish's 2019 smash hit debut in his childhood bedroom in L.A., and has a career of his own as an incisive singer-songwriter — just last year he released his solo debut Optimist. Rubin was a key influence when Finneas was growing up, and their conversation revealed two cutting-edge minds eager to learn from one other. Learn more about your ad choices.
