The Dropcast #131: ANGELO BAQUE WANTS TO SEE BRANDS NURTURING BLACK & BROWN TALENT

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 9, 2020 39:22

Awake NY founder and former Supreme brand director Angelo Baque joins us on this week's episode to discuss the hottest news in fashion. After providing his opinion on some of the biggest product reveals in recent days, he takes the time to delve into his brand and the fashion industry as a whole. Baque and host Noah Thomas begin the podcast by discussing a number of new sneakers, ranging from the Air Force 1 winter boot and adidas' mule creation, to Cactus Plant Flea Market's rhinestone Dunks. The two then touch on Gucci and The RealReal's recently-announced secondhand initiative, Matthew Williams' debut Givenchy collection, and artists collaborating outside of their realm. Next, Baque discusses giving deeper meaning to collaborations and drawing from things that inspire him personally. He speaks on how products should bring awareness, as well as being able to appeal to multiple markets and age demographics by knowing who you are as a brand and remaining honest and sincere in the work. A significant portion of the conversation is rightfully dedicated to brands needing to find consistency in nurturing black and brown talent. Donations have quickly become the trendy play, but without consistency, there will be no change in diversifying the industry. And then hip-hop legend, DJ Paul, joins us to dish on his new podcast, Mafia Radio. Led by host Noah Thomas, Thom begins the show by providing his thoughts on a number of high-profile sneaker collaborations, ranging from Vivienne Westwood's new ASICS, to Grace Wales Bonner x adidas and Aimé Leon Dore's obscure New Balance project. Next, the two delve into Reebok's appointment of Kerby Jean-Raymond as its Global Creative Director and Tyler, the Creator's message to fans regarding voting in the upcoming election. DJ Paul then joins the program to speak on his new podcast on Hot New Hip Hop, called Mafia Radio. The show will include interviews with celebrities, discussions on everything from music and fashion, to cars, real estate, and politics, and stories from the man himself on the younger, wilder days of Three 6 Mafia. Artist and owner of Babylon Cartel, Gianni Lee, joins us on this week's episode to discuss the latest topics in the Highsnobiety world. After delving into the current events, we then talk to GCDS creative director, Giuliano Calza, as he provides us with some background info on the label's recent digital fashion show. While speaking with Highsnobiety's Noah Thomas, Lee shares his thoughts on everything from Slam Jam's upside-down Swoosh Dunks and Dior's new mules, to Kanye West's YEEZY slides, our Colette, Mon Amour Tokyo merch, and the PlayStation 5 pre-order frenzy. He also touches on some of his most recent projects, including a limited edition rug. Next up, Giuliano Calza shares his thoughts on an unusual Milan Fashion Week, before delving into GCDS' SS21 showcase, which served as the first-ever digital fashion arcade. Admittedly excited about virtual shows, Calza feels the GCDS showcase was entirely on-brand for both himself and the label. He has been into cartoons for years, so creating such an otherworldly atmosphere came somewhat easy to him, he says. But while he thoroughly enjoyed working on the digital show, as well as the collection, he insists he's already on to the next show and the next project. WhenSmokeClears® is a jewelery and fashion brand based in Los Angeles. Known for their varsity cardigans and “Radiant Heart” patches, the label was nearly destroyed in the nascent stages of their growth when a blaze took over the team’s apartment in their former New York base. Now, true to its name, the brand is thriving in LA, where it’s made the “Radiant Heart” logo a signature part of its aesthetic; one that speaks to the ability to overcome adversity by radiating love and positivity. You can check out their online store (and a new pair of patchwork-detailed jeans) here. We invited founders of the brand Thermal and Ksace to join host Noah Thomas to weigh in on some of the week’s hottest releases: the paisley Community Garden Dunks (“they look like something John Mayer would like”), Reebok’s divisive spin on the Chelsea boot, YEEZY slides, Vetements’ self-troll, Travis Scott’s high-calorie collab with McDonald’s, and Virgil Abloh’s new Mercedes. On this week’s episode, we spotlight a number standout sneaker releases. Maison Margiela just debuted a luxe reinterpretation of the Air Jordan 4, while fragment design is prepping the release of a pair of Air Jordan 3s. Reebok will soon be delivering two fall-appropriate colorways of its new lifestyle sneaker, the Premier Road Modern, an inline silhouette that is definitely worthy of a cop. In other sneaker-related news, adidas’ Jon Wexler has left the brand to join Shopify. Wex is largely responsible for bolstering the brand’s roster of ambassadors, having added Kanye West, Pharrell, and Beyoncé — just to name a few — to the Three Stripes team during his tenure. Also, we continue our discussion surrounding Walter Van Beirendonck’s criticism of Virgil Abloh, which is hypocritical at best. Hosts Noah Thomas and Jian DeLeon talk about one of the last sneaker stories that until now, hasn’t been retold via product. That of course is the Nike Air Ship, Michael Jordan’s original on-court shoe, and the one famously “banned” by the NBA. Somehow an Italian boutique finessed its way into re-releasing the classic. Speaking of sneakers, we asked Dropcast listeners to weigh in on today’s kick game. Has it simply become too hard to buy cool sneakers? The resounding answer was yes, from salty voicemails about SNKRS Ws turning to Ls when orders get canceled a week after they’re placed, to the endless hustle of raffle after raffle, to ultimately having to pay resale prices or figure out how bots work, it seems too many people are frustrated with the current state of the market. On this week’s episode of The Dropcast, hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas kick things off by discussing a previously unseen colorway of the sacai x Nike Vaporwaffle, a sneaker that looks like it was possibly made in a wafflemaker, just like mom (and Bill Bowerman) used to make! This colorway is kind of mid compared to the ones we've teased before, but it's hard to beat a white sneaker for summer. PLEASURES is also back with a new Reebok collab, taking the hippie-infused Beatnik and adding spider web motifs, resulting in a part mall-goth, part-vampire vibe that meshes well with UNDERCOVER's Spring/Summer 2020 collection. We also ask how we can make as much money as Joe Rogan has with Spotify (reselling sneakers are involved), before getting into the question of the week, which is tied to the release of Supreme's massive Mac Tools workstation that looks like it was stolen off a Fast & Furious movie set. On this week's episode, hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas go back and forth on the week's hottest releases. On the top of that list of course the Ben & Jerry's x Nike SB Dunk Low — better known as the “Chunky Dunky.” The cow print kicks made even more waves this week when lucky F&F members got their pairs in giant-sized pints, along with actual cream. Meanwhile, YOON's upcoming Dunk High collab gives the hosts some nostalgia for a certain Puma sneaker designed by Hussein Chalayan, one of the most underrated designers that archive heads should really show more love to. There's also a brick of a shoe in. adidas' latest Stan Smith, a half-hearted attempt to court some #muleboyz love that ends up looking like a sneaker that's only 90% finished. After breaking down what “crispy nylon” is and why it's so important to KITH's Spring 2020 collection, the conversation shifts to Asian-American and black communities finding solidarity during this time of strife. Following up on a piece we published this week about the depth of the impact Asian-Americans have had in streetwear and sneakers, the 100th-best Filipino/black talent duo since Chad Hugo and Pharrell have a brief discussion on how we can work together to fight oppression — similar to the points actor and activist Kendrick Sampson makes in one of this week's Vibe Check episodes. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are beyond bummed that most of the week's sneaker releases (and teases) are pretty much a gigantic bag of bricks. There's the Grateful Dead Bear Nike SBs that look like a radioactive version of the Three Bears pack from back in the day, and the long-awaited COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Dunks...which are also disappointing. But there is one shoe that manages to pass their taste test, and you'll have to listen to the episode to figure out which one it is. Meanwhile in style news, the Daniel Johnston and Supreme are back with another collaboration, following up on a line of T-shirts from 2012. It's crazy that it happened almost a decade ago, which makes both hosts keenly aware of their own mortality after remembering that they were around for the first time the two entities got together. Of course, one of the most important things in quarantine is hygiene and a regular grooming regimen, which is also why the hosts discuss Highsnobiety's grooming week and one of its standout articles: What's the Skincare Equivalent of Your Favorite Fashion Brand? And lastly, it appears we very well may be in the middle of a clout drought. Jian explains what that means and digs deeper into his article. For Kevin Poon, co-founder of Hong Kong-based label CLOT and boutique retailer JUICE, the Covid-19 pandemic is long past lockdown and at the very early stages of getting back to normal. “It feels like we’re watching the same movie, but we’re 40 minutes ahead,” he says in today’s episode of Vibe Check. He’s in a very fortunate position as a small business owner, where he’s had the opportunity to actually open a new location instead of shuttering several during this weird time in history. He recently opened a branch of his Elephant Grounds Cafe in Chengdu, albeit with strong social distancing measures in place and a business model that primarily revolves around to-go orders. But he’s also experiencing a bit of what economists have called “revenge spending” in Asian countries where malls and clothing stores are reopening, cautiously welcoming consumers who are more than eager to cop up fresh gear. Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas talk the latest drops on Highsnobiety’s radar including No Vacancy Inn’s New Balance collab, the 700 percent markup on Air Jordan 1 Chicagos, and the shoes you’ll most likely catch on the feet of drug dealers. In the second half of the show, the hosts give their takes on the style lineup: a courtroom sketch artist’s illustrations of outfits for the Met Gala that never happened and Supreme x Barbour’s Harvard-meets-Oxford collab. This week in pop culture saw Nicolas Cage set to play Joe Exotic in an upcoming scripted series about the documentary miniseries that started it all (1:34). The good news is, Cage and Exotic are one and the same, so no acting will be needed on his part. No Vacancy Inn’s New Balance 650s are kicking off this episode’s lineup of sneaker drops with their 400 pairs exclusive release on StockX — 399, if you don’t count Jian’s pair (2:50). He shares a little background on the shoe, including the influence of the late designer and craftsman George Nakashima. (4:18). The hosts also dig into the inspiration behind the new print on Nike’s latest Air Foamposite One, which features the timely appearance of a silver dragon for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (4:48). Following the premiere of ‘The Last Dance,’ certain sneakers have gone through a surge in popularity. The latest has been the Air Jordan 1 Chicago, with its resale price skyrocketing after the latest episode of the docuseries (6:03). Noah’s on the hunt for some Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen shoes, specifically the Air Pippen 2, which have been difficult to come by. Meanwhile, Jian’s planning to try his luck on getting a pair of the Royal Toe Jordan 1s dropping this weekend (7:24). Make sure to check out the Air Jordan ‘Why It’s Cool’ episode to learn about the shoe’s legacy through the words of designer Peter Moore and other industry figures.  The Nike Air Deschutz sandal has Noah and Jian divided, but the duo does agree on one thing about the shoe: you can bet on catching some street pharmacists wearing a pair, along with the Purple Metallic Nike Air Jordan 4s dropping later this month (8:58). Palace’s SS20 teaser opens up this week’s style news, showcasing a clean shirt with floral embroidery that seems very promising for Noah (11:26). While it’s difficult to envision the future beyond the current pandemic, this wasn’t the case for the courtroom sketch artist who Highsnobiety commissioned to draw fits for the 2020 Met Gala that never happened (13:05). Jian feels like there was a missed opportunity to dress up and sketch out Grimes and Elon Musk’s newborn baby arriving on the red carpet (14:30). He brings things back to Earth with Supreme x Barbour’s latest collection, which is great in theory, but goes awry when you think about the people you can see wearing it (15:25). Wrap up your week with ‘Vibe Check’ where Jian checks in with Murda Beatz who’s part of a new network he dubs the “MTV of gaming” as well as Team Epiphany’s Coltrane Curtis and Lisa Chu who speak on running their business and influencer marketing. Team Epiphany, a marketing and creative agency that’s been around for 15 years, is responsible for conceptualizing the idea of an “influencer” before the social media we know today even existed. They’re also the creative force behind collaborative projects like the Heineken 100 and Coca-Cola Energy x Camp High’s campaign, a brand that was featured in the latest issue of the Highsnobiety magazine. Coltrane Curtis and Lisa Chu, the agency’s managing partners, work, commute, and live together, now even more than ever. Pretty much the only thing they’re fighting about is sharing office space within their NYC apartment. The duo joins host Jian DeLeon to talk about recent projects and the steps they’re taking to keep small businesses up and running. Lisa Chu: In addition to running the agency’s event production, I’m also chief financial officer at Team Epiphany. Which means I’m reading anything and everything that has to do with the stimulus package because this pandemic is having a huge impact on culture and community. We’re an independent, small business that employs over 70 employees so I’m doing everything I can to ensure their financial security as well as the agency’s. I’m on the phone with our friends that own companies like Vosges, Cosabella, LEDE PR and our network of influencer friends to share stimulus information that may help keep our NYC community of small businesses afloat. The agency’s accomplishments from their Coca-Cola and Camp High collaboration is up on Coltrane’s list as one of Team Epiphany’s top five collaborations (5:22). Host Jian DeLeon chats with Shane Lindstrom, better known as Murda Beatz, a multi-platinum record producer who’s created hit singles with Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Drake, Migos, and many more award-winning artists. To keep the momentum going this month, he released two new records and his first drum kit sample pack. Quarantine life has been the same work from home routine as usual for Shane, just heightened to a daily basis. Without outside distractions, artists have either been uninspired or motivated. Shane identifies with the latter, focusing on all things music including his upcoming singles. His latest project is what he refers to as the “MTV of gaming”: Players Ntwrk, a group of artists, producers, and athletes who stream their gameplay while connecting with fans. Shane shares some of his favorite games at the moment that are more than likely to make an appearance on Players Ntwrk (4:30). Jian introduces Shane to the world of Animal Crossing where players have been designing clothing and reimagining real world merch and apparel in a 2D universe. This certainly speaks to Shane who enjoys the sense of community that comes with being both a producer and a gamer. The pandemic has also provided Shane an opportunity to work with a greater variety of artists while revisiting old practices. While working at home, Shane just might release some new gaming beats (6:50). Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are back with a new show format that stays true to the heart and core of the podcast by focusing on the latest drops on Highsnobiety’s radar. Jian and Noah start off by diving into this week’s hypest sneaker drops, including WTAP’s New Balance M992 collab. In the second half, the duo talk style news from a collision of worlds: Palace and NHS, Astroworld and Fortnite, along with KAWS x The Scotts. Eric Emanuel, Dropcast alum and the designer of his eponymous sportswear brand, starts off the quick hits with his rework of Allen Iverson’s signature Question Mid, which will see a release today as rumored on Emanuel’s Instagram (1:03). The hosts are known for their distaste in mids, but this pair hits the right spot for them (with a caveat, of course). With the days transitioning into summer, Jian sees SNEEZE Magazine’s Reebok’s Club C as the way to go this upcoming season (1:56). Noah believes it’s definitely slept on, and he sees it as an open canvas for DIY and customizations just as much as the Air Force 1s.  Way on the other side of the color spectrum, Nike SB is collaborating with 7-Eleven to release a co-branded Dunk Low (3:20). Speaking of Air Force 1s, the hosts agree that a clean white shoe with simple embroidery would have done the trick. As per Noah’s words, the shoes went too hard on the festive spirit. Jian’s definitely not sleeping on the next silent killers: WTAP’s New Balance M992 is dropping today at select stockists (4:23). In style news, we see the unveiling of another classic, the Levi’s 501 jeans which were first released in the ‘90s (6:27). After wearing sweatpants for days on end, Jian has turned to his Levi’s and Supreme jeans. Noah’s also looking to invest in some raw denim, which probably won’t be the pair in question as they’re most likely sold out. The next coveted item is the Louis Vuitton Millionaires sunglasses coming in at a hefty $890 — the perfect amount to be paid off by a stimulus check with some money left over for groceries and other non-essentials (8:26). As a London-based brand, Palace joins the growing lineup that’s contributing to Covid-19 relief by donating all profits from its NHS TRI-TO HELP capsule to charities supporting the NHS (10:02). Last week, in another meeting of worlds, Travis Scott took to Fortnite for his Astronomical World digital tour in what Jian dubbed as a “psychedelic drug stimulator” (11:20). Now, the artist has added a third installment of merch for this cross-over to his online shop. KAWS has also released the final cover for Travis Scott and Kid Cudi’s new single following two prior limited edition covers which are already sold out (11:52). The hosts give a shout out to Cam Hicks, Virgil Abloh’s go-to photographer who’s releasing his first book on May 6 (12:54). The episode wraps up with “What’d You Cop?” where Noah was gifted a pair of Eytys’ new sneakers and a bracelet from Ineverheardofyou (13:31). Jian received one as well, along with an Aries sweatshirt and tee, a goodie package from Scott Sternberg, and an 18 East cardigan which has been the perfect cozy piece for topping off his quarantine fits.  The Dropcast hotline is open and running, so call in at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) to say what’s up. DJ Clark Kent has created a dizzying array of work over the span of his career ranging from mixes to tracks with artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. The hip hop DJ and producer joins hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas on this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast’ to talk sports, kicks, and music as he weighs sneaker against sneaker and music artists against each other. Sports fans have been raving about ESPN’s The Last Dance, a documentary that follows Michael Jordan and the Bulls through unseen footage from their 1997-98 championship season (2:53). Clark sees it as an opportunity to identify the greatest of all time once and for all, as younger sports fans finally witness Jordan in action.  The quick hits turn to some new school kicks recently unveiled by ASICS and Kiko Kostadinov as the GEL-Aurania (7:33). Although Clark isn’t raving about them, he speaks to the essentiality of every sneaker and how the importance is measured through their connection to the consumer. A product that has done exactly that is the Supreme x Takashi Murakami box logo tee, which was released to support Covid-19 efforts (11:35).  Stussy x Nike’s Air Zoom Spiridon Caged has been one of the most hyped sneaker collabs, and their first iteration seems to remain largely uncontested despite news of a second silhouette (15:46).  Noah fills everyone in on Babyface and Teddy Riley’s Instagram battle, which viewers called a major fail after the artists called it quits due to sound problems (17:10). The second time was a charm, with four million users tuning in to the session. If Clark were to put a score to it, he would hand the victory to Babyface.  As another big name who has since permeated the world of social media, Drake pulled a victory for breaking a TikTok record with “Toosie Slide,” and his luxurious bed which costs as much as a house has garnered just as much attention (24:51).  This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked “What celeb has the best sneaker collection?” (34:12). Before the cast dives into the voicemails, Clark names a handful of his top sneakerheads and the quality he looks for in doing so. If you’ve been paying attention, it comes as no surprise that Clark copped a third pair of Sergio Tacchini sneakers along with the Air Fear of God 1 Triple Black, a full box of Fresh Prince of Bel Air gear with a dozen different sweatshirts and T-shirts, a Compound x New York Knicks cap, and the Supreme Murakami tee in “What’d You Cop?” (42:54). Mario Guzman, the mastermind behind the cannabis brand SHERBINSKIS, calls in for this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast’ to speak with hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas about his business from its roots up to the present day and being dubbed “the Supreme of Marijuana.” As people are gearing up for that time of the year, Mario also shares smart ways to go about selecting your options. The quick hits begin by revisiting an event from earlier in the week as the cast pay their respects to Chynna Rogers, an up-and-coming rapper who passed away at the young age of 25. Then, things go even further back to last season when BEAMS came out with Crocs that were meant to be a part of a capsule collection with Highsnobiety. The Japanese label is back with new military-inspired sandals that the cast is all for (3:56). Another possible return is the Nike SB Dunk Low “Buck” from 2003 which could be returning later this year (5:20). The sneaker’s University of Oregon colorway happens to be the same green and gold that reps Jian’s alma mater, making it an automatic cop. Contemporary artist Daniel Arsham recently announced his newest project, a Uniqlo capsule in collaboration with Pokémon (6:48). As the first visual artist to be granted access to Pokémon’s archive, Arsham’s work is proving that the animated franchise continues to thrive. However, the current times are rough for young fashion designers, and LVMH recognizes that. Mario, Jian, and Noah support the group’s decision to cancel this year’s LVMH prize in order to set up a fund that supports previous winners (9:17). NBA has put a contingency plan in place which includes individual and team training for players before the season resumes (11:02). The cast comes up with novel but not impossible ideas for alternative strategies as they suggest players to battle it out, gladiator style. The fashion industry is also fighting tooth and nail to stay on top during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a new study positing that consumers will start to reach for heritage rather than hype products (15:28). Mario speaks on running his business successfully during the current crisis as well as the necessary traits for a lasting business (17:20). As Mario shares, SHERBINSKIS is the new kid on the block, but his philosophy represents the future for many new brands. He takes it back to the beginning when he was growing out of his garage in the early 2000s while being involved in the legalization movement, and the compassion shown towards veterans, disabled individuals, and the sick during that time in San Francisco (21:18). To put things into perspective, Mario reflects on progressing from worrying about getting shut down on a daily basis into being classified as an essential business. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked Dropcast listeners to dig through their memories to the first time they smoked weed (28:07). Callers share the good and the bad, and Mario joins in with anecdotes of his first joint at the age of 11. In “What’d You Cop?” Mario treated himself to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class 560 but also did his share of giving through donations (35:38). Recently, Smoke DZA returned with his latest album A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed, and he talks about the new music video for “Praying For My Soul,” a single off the album featuring Flipp Dinero, on this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast.’ Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas talk cozy work-from-home fits courtesy of Needles’ new SS20 drop (4:12). Now that he’s in the know about the new drop, Smoke’s planning to let loose during the quarantine. The same goes for Saucony’s Grid Azura 2000, recently reworked by Bodega. Smoke is a fan of New Balance, expressing that Nike and Adidas are like the McDonald’s and Burger King of sneakers (7:00). Supreme proves its presence once again as the streetwear giant, this time quite literally, in their recent full-page New York Times ad showing friends and family chilling at home in front of a massive box logo T-shirt (8:47). This definitely caught the attention of Smoke who’s been waiting on Supreme to release products larger than their current offerings. Although Smoke isn’t big on Jordans, he digs the alternative Off-White Air Jordan 5 colorway and sees their value as someone who flips sneakers once in a blue moon when the opportunity falls into his lap — as he did with the Off-White Air Force 1s (11:54). If Smoke were to collab with Nike, you’d catch him cooking up fresh colorways for Air Max 97s or Vandals (14:10). Jian recently spoke with James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman of the ‘Throwing Fits’ podcast on the growing possibility of a post-sneaker world in the wake of Covid-19 (15:25). Smoke doesn’t see the trend dying out. While the world was figuratively ending, Smoke was busy shooting the video for “Praying For My Soul,” which will be released next Monday (20:06). Smoke can already be seen donning a mask, which speaks to his hope for the video to be a time capsule reminding future listeners of the Covid-19 crisis. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked Dropcast listeners the best quarantine pastime, with callers to the hotline sharing examples of charitable acts and getting the cast to talk the Kush God’s specialty (22:02). Matthew’s also intrigued by the air camouflage seen on Virgil Abloh’s custom jet for Drake, dubbed “Air Drake,” which took inspiration from work created by both creatives: Drake’s Nothing Was The Same cover art, and the set from Louis Vuitton’s Paris Fashion Week show earlier this year (9:53). le. ‘Tiger King’ has been the latest show to blow up during this quarantine period, making people just as unified in agreement about Joe Exotic’s next-level fashion style as they are divided over freeing the incarcerated star (14:01). If you’re looking to graduate from watching the docuseries, tune in to free art and fashion lectures offered by Alexander McQueen’s Sarabande Foundation (17:32). The series launched this past week and will continue to broadcast talks by speakers like Thom Browne, Tim Walker, Molly Goddard, and Samuel Ross until April 9. Nike and Ben & Jerry’s have served their newest creation called the “Chunky Dunky,” a sweet treat for Dunk and ice cream fans (19:00). The talk brings out Matthew’s sweet tooth for mint chip and his weak spot for Kith Treats. Matthew is ready to bring the same undeterred spirit to fashion shows despite cancelations of the London and Paris Fashion Weeks (22:56). Although it’s difficult to predict the specific creative response that this will lead to, Matthew sees potential in the evolution of shows, and speaks to their importance for his brand in creating an ALYX universe that integrates real people. The Question of the Week (QOTW) had Dropcast listeners asking Matthew anything and everything, from motivations for staying creative at home, finding a place in the fashion industry with an unconventional background, to requests for pairs of ALYX Nikes (29:30). It’s no surprise that Matthew’s a fan of mules, seeing how this episode’s Mule of the Week is the ALYX black leather clogs (37:47). Foamposite and Merrell mules all the way around. Make sure to check out ‘Vibe Check,’ a Highsnobiety podcast featuring guests like Brendon and Estelle, the cofounders of Noah, who shared the importance of supporting independent brands, and Mission Chinese Food’s Danny Bowien who discussed anti-Asian xenophobia and dropped a recipe for quarantine soup. Groceries have been a staple for the cast in “What’d You Cop,” and Matthew has stayed top of his workout game with new Nike training gear (39:57). The Dropcast #104: The Dropcast Pitchfest #2 with Bruce Pask and Dertbag's Phil Post

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2020 46:01

Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas start off this week’s very special Dropcast episode from their respective home offices. The hosts are joined by Philip Post, the founder of Dertbag, and Bruce Pask, the Men's Fashion Director at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, who give advice and feedback to upcoming designers. Make sure to stick to the end as we announce the winner of our “New Shoe, Who Dis?” giveaway. Philip and Bruce perform a quick Vibe Check by sharing their work from home situations before moving into the quick hits, Covid-19 edition. With luxury houses including Balenciaga and Saint Laurent producing surgical masks in their French workshops in order to fulfill escalating demands, the cast speaks on the industry’s cooperative attitude and how situations such as this serve as important reminders of fashion’s sense of community (4:30). Up-and-coming designers definitely came through by sharing their brands on the Dropcast hotline for this episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW), and the pitchathon sees the top three featured in no particular order (15:37). First up is Tombogo with a mission to construct character through the design process. Tombogo’s designer sees the brand as a reflection of himself as well as the world, an experiential learning outlet for him to think outside the box. Jian’s drawn to Tombogo’s originality and clear identity, which Philip believes will allow the brand to explore new grounds whether it be streetwear or potential collaborations with unconventional partners such as NASA. Up next is Crescente Patricio, an upcycled denim brand based in Dallas, Texas (21:43). By adopting the approach of an indie rapper, Crescente Patricio’s designer began making “clothing mixtapes” to get his name out. His designs are centered around this concept, with each “mixtape” and piece having their own titles and stories, resulting in narrative-driven clothing. The cast is all for Crescente Patricio’s strong silhouettes, contrasting details, and overall presentation. Bruce makes a note on the importance of sustainability, which is reflected in both brands so far, leading to agreement that sustainability is sure to become an intrinsic component of design. Flyson is a brand fusing elegance with sporty elements with an overall focus on providing complete looks rather than individual pieces to convey its idea of a modern uniform (28:08). The brand draws inspiration from both the tangible and intangible, including extreme sportswear, aerospace suiting, and architectural references to popular culture. Noah and Jian are impressed with Flyson’s debut pieces, which Bruce believes are diverse yet cohesive. Flyson’s uniform concept is one of its strong suits, quite literally, as the cast comments on the importance of establishing a clear identity and fashion universe for consumers to dive into. A Dropcast episode isn’t complete without a segment of “What’d You Cop?” (44:30). Philip’s practical cops include protection for his kicks, and they double as inspiration for his next collection when the world is up in flames. Bruce picked up an Officine Generale chore jacket from his plug in preparation for the spring and summer, and Jian was gifted this episode’s “Mule of the Week,” the Neighborhood UGGs, a pair of cozy shearling-lined slippers perfect for the quarantine life. On that note, Jian announces the winner of our “New Shoe, Who Dis?” giveaway, which asked readers of HIGHStyle, Highsnobiety’s new magazine, to guess the sole of what’s been revealed to be a pair of Balenciaga sneakers (47:07). If you’re looking to add routine to your WFH situation, keep your eyes on Highsnobiety’s Instagram where next episode’s QOTW will be posted. It’s Friday, we’re a week into working from home, but some obligations have yet to settle into our routines. Fortunately, one of the things that have remained regular is our podcast lineup. Host Jian DeLeon is back this episode to introduce ‘Vibe Check’ to our Dropcast listeners. This week’s guest is Sandrine Charles, a consultant, publicist, and all-around communications expert who has worked with names like Noah, Aime Leon Dore, Kith, and Daily Paper. Sandrine shares some insight for maintaining steady productivity before an unpredictable future and the ever-present influence of e-commerce and retail therapy. Keep your eyes peeled and ears open for ‘The Dropcast’ which will be back on regular programming next week with a special pitchfest. In the meantime, make sure to catch up on the latest episodes of ‘Vibe Check’ where Jian checks in with guests from the Highsnobiety world to provide glimpses into their lives and how they’re adapting to the global coronavirus pandemic. For Sandrine, shopping doesn’t end with clothing — she’s setting aside time and money ($100 at Whole Foods) for fruits and vegetables and getting extra uses out of her Vitamix (7:26). Sandrine is aiming for comfort inside and out by eating healthy, waking up at five o’clock in alignment with her body clock, and dressing herself in presentable but cozy sweatpants. In between work and seven o’clock Zoom calls, she’s checking off her watch list and catching up on shows (9:51). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sandy Liang drops into ‘The Dropcast’ studio to talk her latest Vans collaboration and of course, the hottest drops of the week.  Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas shower the fleece queen with all the titles she deserves: Queen of the LES, One Who Goes Ham on the Lamb, Best Fleece in the East, you name it. To start off, the quick hits take the cast into a new upcycling initiative for bedding and sleepwear brought to you by Our Legacy (3:41).  At this time, Our Legacy’s new products aren’t the only reason to stay in bed. The NBA reportedly advised teams to plan for playing games in empty arenas due to coronavirus concerns, but LeBron James isn’t having it (4:54). On a lighter note, the launch of a website generating handwashing infographics based on your favorite song lyrics has been popping off (6:05).  Even in light of the coronavirus outbreak, fashion proves that nothing can really slow it down (7:44). The 2020 LVMH Prize Finalists have also been announced. As a past CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, Sandy views fashion awards as a great way for emerging designers to network and really zero down on what makes their brands unique (9:05). Highsnobiety’s own identity has been reiterated through our new magazine, HIGHStyle, which is out now on newsstands (10:48). Virgil’s upcoming work with Nigo also proved to be good timing for him to clear up his “Streetwear is gonna die” comment, and the hosts give their takes on the update (13:06).  Sandy talks about her developing interest in fashion during that time along with her go to stores as a New York native, which included Vans. Now, she’s a collaborator with the brand, releasing her own limited edition collection of Classic apparel and footwear (15:41). If you’re in NYC, be sure to stop by the pop-up taking place until the end of this weekend at The General by Vans store in Williamsburg. As a self-identifying Chinatown grandpa in dress and behavior, Jian is curious to hear Sandy’s inspiration for the collection (16:35). Earlier this week, we asked listeners (now officially known as Dropouts) the Question of the Week (QOTW): “What is the hardest collab of the year so far?” (20:15). The cast (on completely objective terms) agree that Sandy’s Vans collab has been the best yet — along with the Mule Boyz x Diemme release. No promises, but maybe keep your eyes out for a Sandy Liang x Mule Boyz collab down the line. The title of “Mule of the Week” is given to a pair by TAKAHIROMIYASHITA TheSoloist. (24:30).  A second guest makes his appearance to weigh in on the QOTW, and he hands it to the KITH x Air Force collab (26:43). He also steps in right in time for “What’d You Cop?” with his first drop being this Dropcast promo (28:47).  Next episode’s QOTW will be a special treat so be sure to keep your eyes on Highsnobiety’s Instagram. Joshua Kissi is the creative director and photographer who picked up a camera at the age of seventeen. He’s the co-founder of Street Etiquette, known for their documentation of men’s style with a focus on black men. He joins The Dropcast this week to talk about his ongoing mission of empowering creatives through his latest ventures including TONL. Joshua joins hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas in a moment of appreciation for the new Air Max 95 “De Lo Mío.” The quick hits continue with Aimé Leon Dore’s color-blocked New Balance 827s which will have Jian dressing up as both a Chinatown grandma and an ALD model. While these are the sneakers that will get people scrambling, Supreme’s Nike Air Force 1s will be as accessible as sneakers can get. The shoes will essentially be their version of the CDG Play Converses — relatively affordable sneakers where the supply meets demand (3:49).  Paris Fashion Week saw the debut of Virgil’s Arc’teryx collection along with new off white-colored Off-White Air Jordan 4s (6:52). In other news, many people don’t quite realize that Virgil’s brand is another name for crack (9:26). Speaking about layers of meaning, Balenciaga’s FW20 show brought a new end-of-the-world aesthetic to the runway by addressing climate change and rising sea levels (9:36).  Last Friday, YEEZY Season 8’s surprise PFW presentation showcased polarizing but nonetheless Noah-verified shoes (10:55). Unfortunately, Tokyo Fashion Week which was next on the lineup has been hit with a precautionary coronavirus cancellation. While Milan Fashion Week reached an early conclusion due to an outbreak, fashion weeks in Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul have all been either postponed or canceled (13:53). The cast notes the essential need to stay hygienic and be aware of unwarranted racism particularly in diverse regions like Jackson Heights where Joshua calls home. With International Women’s Day coming up, the hosts give shout outs to the women in their lives including those at Highsnob (16:25). Their appreciation and best wishes are extended to Megan Thee Stallion who’s going through trouble with her music label 1501 Ent. after Roc Nation encouraged her to renegotiate her contract. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked “How do you grow to have a lucrative career as a photographer?” (18:11). The Dropcast listeners called in with a series of inquiries that asked Joshua to reflect back on his own career by making the important distinction between celebrity photographers and photographers who photograph celebrities and commenting on smiling with your eyes. You might have seen this week’s Dropcast guest Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins on the late-night talk show State of the Culture where he serves as a co-host, speaking to your favorite celebrities on Conference Room H, or hosting Mogul, a hip hop podcast. He’s also accomplished in writing, photographing, and DJing, hailing from a career as a multimedia creative and journalist during his time at Complex. For The Dropcast’s 100th episode, Jinx shares thoughtful reflections on the state of culture from streetwear to Black History Month, and of course, this week’s hottest drops. After a quick but heavy roasting of Philipp Plein’s show which was accused of monetizing on the passing of Kobe Bryant, the quick hits take us into more Milan Fashion Week news. During a top secret press conference earlier this week, Raf Simons was officially confirmed as Co-Creative Director of Prada after a lengthy period of public speculation (3:58). On the topic of things that people will really want, Denim Tears has teamed up with Procell once again on a special T-shirt for the annual honoring of his mother’s passing, and all proceeds go towards the Every Mother Counts charity (5:14). Equally worth the anticipation is the red velvet pecan cake made from a recipe by Tremaine Emory’s late mother. This time, the cake is extra special, coming out in a box designed by Tom Sachs. Another new collab that’s telling a story is the Palace x adidas golf collection, which marks the former’s move into performance wear (9:26). Jian notes how there’s a cross-section between guys who chase the hype and hard core golfers while Jinx comments on the saturation of fashion into all the corners of life and culture. This takes the cast into an animated discussion about the intersection of sports, fashion, and what it takes to introduce style to the court and field. AWAKE alumni John Lopez has stepped into the playing field with his first drop of Ineverheardofyou, an independent venture featuring provocative customized Jordan 1s and a text-heavy trucker hat (14:20). Jinx taps into the ingenuity behind such a collection and its value for an up-and-coming brand. As February wraps up, Jinx reflects on the most memorable Black History Month moments including Matthew A. Cherry’s Best Animated Short film Oscar win, Calmatic taking home a Best Music Video Grammy for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” and Tyler, the Creator’s many notable moments (29:55). Ev Bravado, a Highsnob from the early days, takes over the studio with WHO DECIDES WAR partner in crime Téla D’Amore. The duo adopts a raw approach to sustainability with their brand as seen in the forms of layered denim and asymmetrical pieces that follow a strong streetwear sensibility. Before going into the quick hits, Ev reflects on the passing of Pop Smoke and the rapper’s infectious energy that carried through from personal hangouts to after parties during this past Paris Fashion Week. Moncler and Rick Owens’ collaboration puts the hype in hyperbole as the Italian outerwear’s main line taps the American fashion designer to release a customized tour bus available for order along with clothing made for Rick Owens and Michèle Lamy’s west coast tour (8:51). Things only get more heated with the new Off-White x Nike Air Jordan 5s colorway that Virgil Abloh teased on his Instagram (10:43). Téla came through rocking them and telling everyone how they feel just as comfy as slippers. While Jian took five Ls on copping a pair, he and Ev got an in-person look at the unreleased colorway worn by Virgil at a panel during All-Star Weekend. Ev also talks about his position within a new class of creatives along with the importance of providing the younger generations with opportunities to pursue paths in design and his own initiatives tackling the issue. The guest segment gets Ev and Téla discussing the launch of WHO DECIDES WAR and constantly pushing the brand to its greatest potential (17:20). After a decade of attending school and sustaining his brand, Ev brought his collection to Paris and welcomed the likes of Virgil to his show. Ev and Téla emphasize the importance of family in business and keeping their community tight now that WHO DECIDES WAR is stocked on SSENSE and MR PORTER and reaching even greater heights. Last but not least, they each put down a couple tips for getting into the creative industry and entering a winner’s mindset (26:41). If you’re a dedicated Dropcast listener and fellow mule aficionado, you already know what’s next. Last week, Jian and Noah teased their upcoming mule collab with Italian footwear brand Diemme, which will be available exclusively at KITH (29:17). The release includes two pony hair shoes with custom soles, each designed by one of the hosts. Pro tip: pair them with the Highsnob socks which recently dropped on the Highsnobiety Shop. Everyone is pumped for “What’d You Cop?” since the entire cast came home with closet additions from All-Star Weekend (30:35). Téla was gifted her first Chanel bag and perfume, copped a pair of Yves Saint Laurent heels, and the Off-White x Jordan 5s. Ev also got his hands on a pair of the Jordans, Public Enemy Pumas, and reupholstered some Rick Owens. Former Jordan NRG member and designer Frank Cooke joins this episode of The Dropcast as the answer to all of this week’s footwear topics, but he also asks all the right questions. To start off, the quick hits bring up Foot Locker’s recent announcement which slammed the brakes on rising anticipation for Off-White x Nike Air Jordan 5 dropping this weekend in Chicago via a first come, first served basis (4:14). Taking everything from the location to the drop style into consideration, the city should embrace itself for expected pandemonium. This past weekend offered even more commotion as Bong Joon-ho sweeped the Oscars with Parasite by winning four out of six categories. But that equals a B in Asian standards (Jian’s words, not mine). The ceremony’s star-studded attendees meant heated red carpet fashion from the likes of Timothee Chalamet who paired together a Prada zip-up jacket with a pair of Prada joggers, much to the cast’s collective disdain (7:14). Spike Lee came through with his characteristic flair, paying tribute to the late Kobe Bryant by dressing up in a custom Gucci suit. Rumor has it that YEEZY’s long-awaited basketball sneaker will drop during All-Star Weekend (10:53). Noah and Jian will be on the ground, battling the crowd to get their hands on the Off-White Jordans but skipping the anticipated YEEZY Quantum. New York’s timely fashion week was the perfect opportunity for holding a summit to discuss the industry’s future of sustainability (13:23). As a past Jordan Brand designer, Frank had insights to share regarding the topic, specifically his thoughts on how realistic it would be to embrace a sustainable model across an entire shoe brand. The cast appropriately wraps up the segment by discussing the slew of sneaker drops taking place during All-Star Weekend (16:54).  The Mule of the Week called for Frank diving into the details of his own mule, made straight for chilling, not for the courts (26:42). Frank is chilling just as much as he’s gearing up to step back into the world of products. This time, he’s doing so by dropping his knowledge on the Question of the Week (QOTW) which asked, “How can sneaker companies do more to help black communities?” (28:14). Noah and Jian announce their mule collaboration by surprising Frank with the first official pair (40:48). Peep Frank’s and the @muleboyz Instagram pages to get a full look before the drop. These are the first items on Frank’s list as the trio enters the “What’d You Cop?” segment (42:21). Noah spent the past Super Bowl Weekend in Miami, rounding up the most swagged out players at the NFL Honors red carpet. Now he’s back in New York City in time for NYFW, Black History Month, the month of love, and a new episode of The Dropcast joined by Curtains aka Dior and Jordans. The rapper-turned-brand-consultant keeps himself under the radar, but his contribution and impact on the fields of music and fashion are hard to keep lowkey. Before the quick hits take us through the highlights of this week’s news in products and fashion week, the cast starts off by paying respects to the late J. Scott of A$AP Mob (2:34). Curtains was especially shocked by the news, being one of many individuals who shared recent moments with J. Scott prior to the DJ’s passing. In anticipation of All Star Weekend and Curtains’ appearance on The Dropcast, this episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked “Who’s the flyest NBA rookie?” (24:24). Before loading up voicemails from listeners, Jian asks Curtains to drop a name. He delays by dropping a lesson on the finances of rookie athletes before naming Nickeil from the New Orleans Pelicans while Jian picks the Wizards’ Rui Hachimura. After a discussion of the NBA’s dress code, Curtains was asked “Which trends are you gonna kill in 2020?” during his guest segment (32:16). First off, he makes a call for action to simmer down on the collab mania and work on making them extra special. Curtains is asked about his namesake shoe, the Dior Jordans, which he digs as a low and kills the Jordan 1 mids. Curtains isn’t feeling the Mule of the Week, which Noah reveals to be ALYX’s newly dropped leather clogs (39:31). He compares it to the CDG and monochromatic black Chucks, to the hosts’ collective disbelief and disappointment. After a deep roast sesh, Jian and Noah rejuvenate by talking about their newest pieces in “What’d You Cop?” (41:37). Being the consumer and shopper that he is, Curtains’ cops are too much to list. Even so, he named his most flex-worthy purchase of the week to be a signed Glenn Ligon print. After her move to New York City and integration into the city’s creative sphere, Amrit Sidhu has made a name for herself as an in demand DJ and creative consultant. The Australian-born DJ has taken her musically trained talent to sets for big names like Dior, Fendi, Jorja Smith, and Tommy Genesis. Amrit came through to the studio stowed in Noah’s suitcase from Paris Fashion Week, ready to discuss the quick hits along with PFW’s top shows and parties. This week’s highlights start on a low note with the closing of Opening Ceremony’s stores following their acquisition by New Guards Group (2:43). The cast reminisce on the retailer’s legacy and their loss of sample sales and discounts while Amrit recalls her first big move in the city as being booked by the brand. Amrit’s only building more momentum as she continues to work with Nike. She got her hands on the Comme des Garcons Homme Plus x Nike Air Max 95s without having a clue about their price (5:46).  Although traces of a new CDG Nike shoe were absent from PFW, plenty of fire pieces were spotted on the runway (7:32). Noah caught on to trends such as tailoring, neck pieces ranging from thin silks to thick scarves, and winter shorts. The new sacai Nikes are making noise without a doubt, stirring up mixed reviews with people falling strong on either end. Amrit adored every Jacquemus bag and shoe, and was thoroughly impressed by the entire show. Jacquemus isn’t the only one turning 30; Nike has announced the new Air Max 2090 in celebration of Air Max 90’s 30th year (12:11). Jian stands alone on the shoe, which Noah and Amrit plead the fifth on, and considers setting a New Year resolution of only wearing GR’s. After discussing the unfortunate death of the great Juice WRLD, we get his opinion on drops and collabs, including the very talked-about Dior Jordans, Kanye’s new YEEZY 700 MNVN “Phosphor” colorway, Theophilus London’s new Off-White™ boots, 032c’s adidas FYW S-97 Salvation’s, and Beyoncé’s new adidas. While discussing each topic, he expresses his great respect for all points of views and designs, and while he might not be the customer for each item, he is careful to not put anything down, explaining that he has often been in design rooms for countless hours, only to be met with negative feedback. So, while some things were for sure his vibe, others were “not for him.” After getting through all the quick hits, Ronnie talks about how he is preparing for his next collections and lets the world know his latest Bergdorf collab will have the streets on their toes. Jian brings up that Ronnie is about to go on another one of his amazing Kith trips, which are “adventures” where he invites close friends around the world to hang with him for a few days. Since his first one in Aspen, he has continued to expand this idea, making it more and more inclusive to his fans who otherwise might not have had the chance to get their hands on certain items and experiences. Jian gets Ronnie to explain how he came up with this idea and why it’s so important to him. This week marks the 34th anniversary of LL Cool J’s debut album Radio, which was received with critical acclaim and contributed to the solidification of rap as a genre of music. LL signed to Def Jam Records when it was a fledgling hip-hop label, and later turned to acting as he made his debut in movies and TV shows like NCIS. The Grammy Award-winning artist emceed for the show multiple times, and stays classic rather than fitting into a new school or old school style. This mentality led him to a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and earned him the Kennedy Center Honors a year later, marking him as the first rapper to achieve the recognition. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas sat down with LL to discuss his current projects and play a little game that’s a twist on the usual. The trio dive into the episode with the quick hits, starting with 424’s collab with adidas on the SC Premiere and Pro models (8:24). New York City is a manifestation of where art, fashion, photography, and culture intersect. Even in the city that serves as a saturated cultural playground, there are few individuals who better represent and encapsulate such a spirit as masterfully as art critic, writer, and curator Antwaun Sargent, or Steven Irby, photographer and co-founder of Street Dreams Magazine. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are joined by the two culture juggernauts to discuss the junction connecting photography, magazines, and fashion. But first, the quick hits reveal that Virgil’s back in the office and a new Off-White x Nike sneaker has already been in the works (1:50). The Vapor Street is finally available after it made its first appearance a few seasons ago during the brand’s women’s runway show. After talking a couple sneaker misses, the cast is fired up with the Kiko Kostadinov x ASICS GEL-KORIKA along with its eccentric campaign featuring Juergen Teller and his dad bod (5:14). Speaking of chunky, Antwaun pinpoints how GOLF le FLEUR* and Converse’s all-new silhouette, the GLF Gianno Ox, seems like it came straight out of an episode of Doug (6:43). Will Tyler, the Creator be infusing his pastel palettes into high-end fashion any time soon? Jian and Noah pit Antwaun and Steve against each other in a game of “Boutique or Gallery,” where the two guests guess whether the names dropped are fashion boutiques or art galleries (18:50). Antwaun flexes his knowledge of galleries before moving on to talk about his first book, The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion which delves deeper into the conversation on black representation in art, specifically the new generation of photographers who are bridging art and fashion (23:01). He seamlessly transitions into Street Dreams Magazine, asking Steve to share his motivations for creating the publication (30:43). The project builds upon his passion for photography, and has initiated a phenomenon that transcends the original confines of social media and its relationship with the medium of photography. This episode’s segment of “What’d You Cop?” saw a healthy week for Antwaun and Steve (39:07). The former got his hands on the new Pyer Moss sneakers, a gallery shirt from Grace Wales Bonner’s exhibition at the Serpentine, and cologne from Le Labo.
