This episode tells the story of LEDC- the Latino Economic Development Corporation-a nonprofit at the epicenter of our nation’s multiple crises, from COVID19 to the loss of businesses, jobs and housing to the assault on Latinos by the outgoing President and his congressional allies. Marla Bilonick, LEDC’s executive director, credits her staff and the indispensable partnerships she has built with municipalities from Washington DC to Baltimore County and Puerto Rico in creating policy solutions to seemingly intractable challenges. As a CDFI-Community Development Financial Institution-an alternative and more flexible provider of capitol to non-traditional borrowers, LEDC has kept Latino small businesses afloat where banks could or would not. Keeping families whole, through counseling, capitol, organizing and advocacy requires 24/7 responsiveness. And Marla expects a next wave of foreclosure and evictions. We were talking about the toll of anti-Latino rhetoric and policies on the community when we learned the terrible news about the storming of our Capital. We were shaken to the core. But Marla is positive and undeterred. That is the leadership we need in Washington DC and nationally. Listen.

The Lakeland Economic Development Council has worked to improve the local economy, create jobs and cultivate new opportunities for the City of Lakeland and its citizens.  But as any organization looking to raise the bar and tackle big challenges, their bold ideas occasionally ruffle feathers or even cause outright panic.  The fate of the Cleveland Heights golf course was one such issue that caused quite a stir. As thousands of Lakelanders chatted online and among one another about what was, what is, and what should be; we decided to sit down with the man behind it all, LEDC President, Steve Scruggs. We discuss the Heights, the role of the LEDC in shaping Lakeland's future and strategies for improving communication between all interested parties. This conversation may or may not change your opinion of the Heights, the LEDC or Steve Scruggs himself but we believe it's imperative to hear all sides and we hope you do too. For more information on the LEDC, including contact information, you can get to their website by clicking here.

In the wake of community outrage over an idea pitched by the Lakeland Economic Development Council that included the possibility of developing the land that is currently the Cleveland Heights municipal golf course, we decided to start the conversation with the man in charge of it all. Bob Donahay, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Lakeland shares his insight into the history of the course,  the challenges, the opportunities and how the future of the course can effect Lakeland for years to come.  Regardless of what comes of The Heights down the road, one thing is for sure.  Bob Donahay, a.k.a. Lakeland's very own "Ron Swanson," has spent a lifetime of making Lakeland's parks the best they can be.

Since 1991, Latino Economic Development Center, a DC based nonprofit, has worked side by side with Latino families to make their American Dreams possible. These families, both citizens and undocumented immigrants, have aspirations of safe and affordable rental housing, home ownership and the launching and expansion of small businesses. But they are under-resourced in the federal budget and underserved by banks that view them as too risky to lend to and invest in. This is why LEDC became a Community Development Financial Institution, a lender certified by the US Department of Treasury, to make the investments that others will not. As executive director Marla Bilonick explains, an ethos of service, expertise in asset building and commitment to progressive policy advocacy has enabled LEDC to thrive and expand in a very divisive political climate. LEDC has opened new offices in Baltimore, Wheaton, Maryland, Arlington, Virginia and recently, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. A local organization is now a national change maker. Interestingly, LEDC’s growth is not all about the ability to deploy capital effectively, LEDC builds relationships with community stakeholders, from city council members to tenants and small business owners. These relationships make it possible for LEDC to be included in the shaping of public policies that impact Latino families. LEDC exemplifies a healthy tension between being a trusted advisor to municipalities and a strong voice for the communities they serve. Their model of service, advocacy and organizing is highly effective and has led to rapid growth. And its expansion of programs and localities is taxing LEDC’s lean administrative infrastructure. Marla points out that more unrestricted funding would help to strengthen those functions, a small philanthropic tweak that could yield meaningful organizational and community benefits.

The London Economic Development Corporation is one of those organizations that we hear a lot about, but don't often have the opportunity to fully appreciate what they do for the city. I enjoyed Kapil's overview of what LEDC does in our city.I think I learned more about the LEDC in this 45 minute interview than I knew after living here for almost 20 years. It was a good exploration of the economic factors that determine the success or failure of a small city.

Marla Bilonick, Executive Director, Latino Economic Development Center Marla has mastered policy advocacy at the local level. It starts with providing Latino families with the highest level of support for starting businesses, buying homes, and improving rental housing conditions. LEDC's success, she says, is a result of a committed staff, who “change people's lives.” As a result, local municipalities, including DC city government, look to LEDC to inform their policymaking. And advocacy at the national level has become a necessity, given LEDC's connection to its immigrant constituency, in the current political climate. In the past, Marla explains, our advocacy was about the technical areas of small business and housing programs. Now we have different battles to fight.
