How a coaching conference turned into a seven-figure media business

My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/   When Aaron Wilbur launched The Coaches Site in 2010, he simply wanted to solve a problem he kept seeing in hockey: the best coaches were constantly sharing ideas with each other, but that knowledge rarely made its way to coaches at lower levels of the sport. What started as a small coaching conference eventually turned into a subscription platform with more than 41,000 coaches across 54 countries and over $1.5 million in annual recurring revenue. In my interview with Wilbur, we discussed how he turned conference videos into a subscription product, why evergreen content works so well for coaching education, and how he's building a platform that allows coaches across all sports to share and monetize their expertise.

In this episode, George joins Ilana to share the habits that accelerated his career, the tough leadership decisions behind WWE's growth, and the mindset shifts that helped him reinvent himself under pressure. While many may not have heard of ‘Viva la Dirt League', their kids probably have. Self-described as a ‘bunch of nerds who play games and make comedy sketches about games,' they're a YouTube sketch comedy group and independent production company based in New Zealand. But what was once a channel that made a couple of hundred dollars a month has grown into a multi-million dollar business, with millions of subscribers, billions of views, and their own streaming platform. It was founded by Alan Morrison and Adam King in 2011, with Rowan Bettjeman joining a couple years later. Like many, the content they produce has changed throughout the years – beginning with parodies before pivoting into shortform comedy when it became unprofitable. “We pivoted pretty hard into comedy sketches quite early,” Morrison told Mike Hosking. “Like two or three years in. We literally found there was a tech store called Playtech that allowed us to film there after hours,” he said. “And we just filmed in the store and got like, one sketch out every couple of weeks.” For some success comes fast and hard, but for others like Viva la Dirt League, it takes a bit longer. “It's been a slow burn across out entire lifespan,” King told Hosking. “There were the odd sketch here and there, we've had a few, what you'd call ‘viral successes.'” But it wasn't until they committed to a consistent schedule that they really started to take off. “When we were committed to doing three videos a week, the algorithm was like, okay, these guys are reliable and started to present us,” Morrison explained. But consistency isn't the only factor in the group's success. “Part of our success and the success of people online is people don't necessarily want you to just make the exact same thing over and over,” King said. “They want to see your creativity, and often the videos that do best are the ones that we've thrown our heart and soul into that might be a little bit different.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Building a Very Human Media Business | Erin Diehl #654

New Media Show (Video)

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2026

As AI becomes more embedded into content creation, discovery, and distribution, one truth is becoming clearer: the long-term winners in media may not be the fastest or the most automated. They may be the most human. That was the core idea behind this conversation with Erin Diehl of Improve It! and the host of the Workday Playdate Podcast, and New Media Show host and Podcast Hall of Fame Inductee Rob Greenlee on New Media Show Episode 654, where we explored what it really means to build a media business rooted in trust, emotional connection, authenticity, and memorable audience experiences. Erin Diehl, founder of improve it! and host of the Workday Playdate podcast, brings a distinctive perspective to this discussion. Her work sits at the intersection of improv, leadership, communication, and community-building. On her podcast and in her live workshops, she focuses on helping people reconnect with empathy, listening, adaptability, humor, and playfulness as practical tools for stronger communication and leadership. Erin describes those same qualities as the traits of both a great improviser and a great human, and that framing shaped this entire conversation. (itserindiehl.com) What made this episode especially timely is that it did not treat AI as the enemy. Instead, it argued that AI is becoming part of the infrastructure of modern media, especially in discovery, distribution, workflow, and scale, while human presence remains the true differentiator. I said during the episode that creators are still in the human media business, and Erin agreed that what continues to work is the authenticity of human experience. That idea matters because audiences are increasingly surrounded by an abundance of content. When everything becomes easier to generate, the value of presence, perspective, vulnerability, and emotional resonance goes up. Erin argued that humanity is not becoming less important in the AI era. It is becoming more important. She pointed to empathy, trust, culture, and connection as qualities that are not going away, even as new technologies reshape jobs, workflows, and media formats. A major theme in this conversation was the role of play in serious work. Erin's approach is not about being frivolous. It is about using play, improv, and emotional openness to create real breakthroughs in communication. In her workshops, she guides people step by step out of their comfort zones, not to embarrass them but to help them reconnect with spontaneity, attentiveness, and confidence. She explained that many adults lose that natural instinct for play as they grow older, replacing it with judgment, self-doubt, and emotional caution. Her work is designed to reverse some of that pattern and reawaken more authentic human interaction. We also talked about how this translates directly into content creation. Erin shared that her podcast has become more than just a show. It is part of a broader ecosystem that supports her workshops, speaking, community, and business growth. She uses monthly themes to shape her episodes, guest selection, social content, and offers. That strategy helps create consistency, clarity, and a stronger trust pathway between audience attention and business outcomes. It is a smart reminder that a podcast today often works best when it is part of a larger media and relationship-building system. Another valuable part of this episode was Erin's openness about team building. She made it clear that creating across podcasting, social media, video, live events, and community is difficult to sustain on one’s own. She credited her team with helping manage production, guest coordination, marketing, logistics, sales, and creative execution. That is an important lesson for professional creators and media entrepreneurs. Building a durable media business often means building systems and support around your voice, not trying to do every part of the machine alone. We also dug into mindset, self-expression, and the emotional reality of being a creator today. Erin spoke candidly about doubt, comparison, and the danger of code-switching or muting your true personality to fit an environment. Her advice was direct: find the people, audiences, and teams that allow you to be more fully yourself. In a media environment increasingly shaped by algorithmic incentives and imitation, that may be one of the most important strategic advantages a creator can have. This episode is really about a bigger question facing everyone in podcasting, video, and digital media right now: if AI can help produce and distribute content at scale, what still makes a creator matter? The answer from this conversation is not just better tools or smarter systems. It is humanity. It is the ability to make people feel seen, understood, energized, and connected. That is what creates trust. That is what builds community. And that is what makes a media business more durable over time. Brief Episode Description In New Media Show Episode 654, Rob Greenlee talks with Erin Diehl, founder of improve it! and host of Workday Playdate, about what it takes to build a truly human media business in an AI-driven era. They explore why trust, empathy, emotional intelligence, playfulness, authenticity, and community may become even more valuable as AI expands across media creation and distribution. The conversation also looks at how improv principles can strengthen podcasting, leadership, content strategy, live events, and audience connection. Erin shares how she built her business and shows around human transformation, while Rob frames why creators still need to think of themselves as being in the human media business first. Key Takeaways – Creators are still in the human media business, even as AI becomes more useful for discovery, workflow, and distribution. – Authenticity, empathy, trust, and emotional connection are becoming more valuable as content volume increases. – Improv skills like listening, adaptability, humor, and presence map directly to stronger media creation and leadership. – A podcast works best when it is part of a broader ecosystem that includes community, services, events, and business strategy. – Monthly content themes can help creators build a more focused and sustainable content engine across multiple platforms. – In-person human experiences still have unique power in an increasingly digital media world. – A strong team can be essential for creators trying to build across audio, video, social, and live experiences. – The future of media may depend less on sounding polished and more on being unmistakably human. We last spoke with David four years ago on the podcast, and a lot has changed since he set up his newsletter as a side project. He talks to Peter about how he always wanted Communiqué to be more than a newsletter, his vision for a 'proper' media business, and how he is hiring to build a culture that can be replicated elsewhere. On today's episode of the Candice Malcolm Show, Candice shares documents that Juno News has uncovered showing that CBC has hired at least 20 temporary foreign workers in their Ontario offices. As Candice reports, the CBC has used Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) to claim they cannot find Canadian workers to fill these positions. The CBC, since 2015, has filed at least 20 of these in Ontario, including for positions they deem “high wage.” CBC claims to represent Canadian culture while taking $1.4B annually from the taxpayer, and yet, they prioritize hiring foreigners over Canadians. Later in the show, Candice is joined by Juno News host Alexander Brown to discuss the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and how it has led to record youth unemployment. They discuss Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's comments yesterday in PEI condemning the Liberal management of the TFWP and his prediction that the numbers will continue to rise despite Liberal promises to cap the program. They also discuss Conservative Immigration Critic Michelle Rempel Garner's work exposing LMIA and TFWP scams. Next, they discuss a new lawsuit against the CBC over its unwillingness to disclose subscription numbers for their lacklustre streaming service Gem. The CBC takes taxpayer money, then turns around and charges a premium to watch its programming, and on top of that, they're using even more taxpayer resources to go to court to block an access to information request and defend their lack of transparency. Katie provides fresh personal finance advice with a unique outlook, coupled with deep, self-taught knowledge.  Before founding Money with Katie in 2020, she worked professionally in marketing and user experience design for Southwest Airlines, Dell Technologies, and Meta. She's the author of Rich Girl Nation: Taking Charge of Our Financial Futures. Notes: If you're not curious about it, you're not going to give it your all. But if you are, you can become relentless. Chase your curiosity and obsessions with great rigor. That passion and love for whatever the thing is can lead to big opportunities in your life. Do you want 100% of a grape or 25% of a watermelon? Advice Katie got when she was considering accepting the offer to be acquired by Morning Brew. The importance of having a coach. Katie talked about the life-changing impact her coach, Elizabeth, has had on her. Ambitious, motivated people who have high standards need help, too. In fact, maybe as much as anyone. It's worth it to invest in yourself and find a person to talk with 1 on 1. Parents - High expectations, straight A's or bust. Driven, hard to turn it off. The Morning Brew acquisition - Money with Katie. Worked at Meta and did Money with Katie at the same time. Left for the acquisition. Austin Rief (CEO) DM'd her on Twitter and made an offer during their first 30-minute conversation. Big lesson - Your IP is everything. Book Dedication - “To the anonymous guy who 'works in finance' that used to relentlessly comment on my nascent website in 2018, urging me to quit writing about money and 'keep it to myself. I hope you're well." Acknowledgments - “Mom, for all those quiet days spent sitting on the floor of the Lents branch library or wandering the stacks at Barnes & Noble. Dad, for spending your time after work at the kitchen table with me every time my homework involved numbers, and for being my number one fan.” How much money do you need to be financially free? Katie breaks down the 4% rule, why it works, and how it can be personalized and optimized for each person's retirement needs. High Standards Can Be a Double-Edged Sword – "I am an incredibly driven person because of the people who raised me... But I also have a really hard time with turning it off. I can become very narrow-minded and obsessive about the things that I'm doing." Turn Critics Into Fuel – Katie dedicated her book to an anonymous finance professional who told her to "quit writing about money" and "keep it to herself." Sometimes the best fuel comes from those who doubt you. Money Transparency in Families Creates Advantages – Katie's parents openly discussed finances, including sharing their income. "I never really thought of it as something that was taboo... made it a lot easier for me now as an adult." The Power of Life Coaching for Entrepreneurs – After initial skepticism, Katie found a life coach who told her, "You are way too in your head. You are way too concerned with the minutia. You don't even know where you wanna go yet." Intellectual Property is Everything in Negotiations – "Your intellectual property is the most valuable thing that you are negotiating over... The primary value of the thing that I'm spending 60 hours a week working on needs to be accruing to me." The 25x Rule for Financial Freedom – Based on the 4% withdrawal rule: "Once you have accumulated 25 times your annual spending... You should theoretically be able to use 4% of that amount every year, withdraw it, and live on it." Marriage Changes Everything Financially – "Marriage is the most legally significant thing you will do in your life other than die, and you don't get so much as a leaflet about how your rights have just changed." Prenups Aren't About Distrust – They're about legal protection, especially for anyone who might leave the workforce. "If you spend decades out of the workforce... You need to ensure that if your partnership ends someday... You will have a certain amount of income." Desire Drives Excellence – "If you're not curious about it, you are not going to give it your all... There is such a difference in outcomes. If I am really into something that I'm working on, it's gonna be second to none."

Oscar voters will no longer be able to skip watching some of the nominated films. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Monday announced that members will from now on be required to watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round of Oscar voting. Up until now, Oscar voters had only been encouraged to watch the nominees and vote in categories they felt qualified in. But in recent years, what films get watched by academy members has been increasingly seen as a significant factor in what wins. At the same time, the publication of anonymous Oscar ballots has often featured members confessing that they didn’t get around to watching some notable films or not finishing lengthier nominees. In other news — many appearances by the faces of the entertainment industry, from filmmakers of all different backgrounds, the Criterion Closet will get an extended appearance in Los Angeles, as a mobile version of the closet will be available for cinephiles to visit. With more than 1200 films in its official collection of Blu-rays, the Criterion Collection has been one of the leading physical media distributors. So with the closet arriving in Los Angeles, we thought it’d be worth checking in on the physical media industry with Dominic Patten, senior editor & tv critic at Deadline. We’ll also hear from Peter Rainer, who add their insights and discuss their favorite physical media. With files from the Associated Press

Next in Media spoke with Andrew Rosen, an analyst and author of the newsletter Medium Shift, about the struggles traditional media companies are having in catering to younger sports fans.Rosen also talked about the various attempts at recreating sports bundles, and whether we're headed toward a world where all sports are available via streaming, yet fans are more confused and overwhelmed than ever.Takeaways:The Shift from Streaming Wars to RebundlingThe streaming industry is moving past the "streaming wars" phase into a period of rebundling. As businesses grow, it's easy for the scrappy, risk-taking energy that fueled early success to get buried under processes, hierarchies, and the push for efficiency. Seasoned entrepreneurs who manage to keep that entrepreneurial spirit alive usually do so by staying open to new ideas, empowering their teams, and making sure innovation doesn't get lost in bureaucracy. Growth requires structure, but too much of it can kill the very mindset that made the company thrive in the first place. The trick is finding that balance—scaling smart while keeping the culture of curiosity, adaptability, and bold decision-making intact. David Wolf is a seasoned media executive, music producer, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience. He is the founder of Audivita Studios, a company that produces audiobooks and podcasts. Additionally, David is building a new venture called Media Capital Ventures, which aims to acquire and grow other production companies. Today, David shared insights into his journey of scaling and growing his businesses. He discussed the challenges of balancing entrepreneurial culture with strategic growth, the importance of building a cohesive team, and the role of AI in sales and marketing. Stay tuned!
