In this reflective episode, Jim Tew shares an honest and personal conversation about queens—both the winged kind in the hive and the ones we buy in cages. Sitting among his thriving colonies, Jim weighs the pros and cons of letting bees raise their own queens versus introducing commercially produced ones. He explores the timing, risks, and costs of each approach and how personal priorities—like honey production, genetics, and even beekeeping stamina—factor into the decision. As spring builds, Jim considers the idea of walkaway splits, splitting strong colonies and letting the bees raise their own queens naturally. But is that the right call? Will a naturally reared queen be as productive or reliable as one from a queen producer? What if the colony falters during the queen-rearing process? From his rocking chair among the bees, Jim doesn't offer a definitive answer—just thoughtful questions and seasoned observations for beekeepers at any stage in their journey. Whether you're driven by production goals or simply enjoy the companionship of your colonies, this episode offers plenty to think about when it comes to queens, splits, and what it means to keep bees. ______________________ Thanks to Betterbee for sponsoring today's episode. Have you ever heard of a bee room? In this episode, Jim Tew revisits a nearly forgotten practice of intentionally housing honey bee colonies inside homes—typically in attics or wall cabinets—during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Far from today's observation hives or honey extraction rooms, these “bee rooms” featured free-hanging feral colonies living just above or beside the families who kept them. Jim shares vivid stories from his own experiences visiting these historical remnants with a former lab technician and reflects on how societal attitudes toward living with insects have changed over time. From swarms in attic closets to cabinets built into upper-story walls, he considers why people once welcomed bees into their homes and why such practices have all but disappeared. The conversation also explores practical issues—like swarming, temperature control, wax moths, and mice—and draws modern comparisons to observation hives and controlled setups like those in zoos or garages. Through it all, Jim emphasizes that bees haven't changed much—but we certainly have. Join Jim for this fascinating look back at a different era of “living with your bees,” and maybe you'll start to wonder: could the attic bee room make a comeback? ______________________ Thanks to Betterbee for sponsoring today's episode. Online beekeeping education has come a long way—and the University of Montana is leading the way. In this episode, Jeff and Becky talk with Dr. Scott Debnam, head beekeeper and lead instructor for UM's Online Master Beekeeping Program, about how the program has evolved over the past 12 years and why it continues to grow. Scott shares how the program balances science-based instruction with practical application. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach, students learn honey bee biology and colony ecology so they can make informed decisions that fit their goals, values, and local conditions. The program's three levels—apprentice, journeyman, and master—are structured to build experience over time, with engaging lectures, moderated forums, and even student-led research. Students come from across the U.S. and over 25 countries, and their questions, experience, and feedback shape the program's dynamic learning environment. Scott's enthusiasm for teaching and his love for bees are front and center in this conversation, which highlights the value of structured learning, community interaction, and lifelong curiosity in becoming a better beekeeper. In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff and Becky welcome an extraordinary young researcher, Vince Wu, a high school senior and Davidson Fellow Scholarship winner. Vince's groundbreaking research combines artificial intelligence and honey bee foraging behavior, using radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking and deep learning models to predict how weather influences bee foraging activity. Vince's project, which started as a personal exploration of beekeeping and science, turned into a sophisticated study that gathered over 50,000 data points. He tracked individual foraging flights across three hives using RFID tags and monitored concurrent weather conditions to build predictive models. His findings provide insight into how sunlight, temperature, and other environmental factors influence honey bee foraging. Before diving into Vince's research, Dr. Dewey Caron shares another insightful audio postcard, this time focusing on winter colony losses and the importance of performing necropsies on deadouts. He explains how beekeepers can better understand colony mortality by examining key indicators such as starvation, small winter clusters, and Varroa mite infestations. Dewey also discusses recent survey results on colony losses, highlighting the ongoing challenges beekeepers face in maintaining healthy colonies. The U.S. beekeeping industry is facing a crisis. Honey bee losses have skyrocketed, with commercial beekeepers reporting an average of 62% colony losses since June, as reported by Project Apis m. At the same time, critical USDA bee research programs are being cut, raising concerns about how quickly the industry can recover. In this Beekeeping Today Podcast BONUS episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman sit down with Steven Coy, president of the American Honey Producers Association (AHPA) and co-owner of the Coy Bee Company, to discuss the severity of the losses and what they mean for beekeepers, pollination services, and food production. Steven explains how these losses compare to historical averages and why this year's numbers are particularly alarming. He discusses the impact on pollination services for almonds, apples, blueberries, and other crops that depend on honey bee colonies. The episode also addresses recent cutbacks at USDA bee research labs and the consequences of losing key scientists and support staff. Steven emphasizes the need for beekeepers to stay engaged and take action by reporting their losses through surveys, advocating for industry support, and contacting policymakers. The discussion highlights ways beekeepers can navigate this crisis, including participating in the ELAP program for commercial beekeepers, staying informed through the American Honey Producers Association, and supporting ongoing research initiatives. While the challenges ahead are significant, Steven remains hopeful that with patience, persistence, and industry-wide cooperation, solutions can be found. In this episode of the Upscaling from Hobbyist to Sideliner series, we explore the business side of beekeeping with two beekeepers who successfully made the leap. Hosts Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman are joined by Tara Dawn Chapman of Two Hives Honey in Austin, Texas, and Jay Williams of Williams Honey Farm in Tennessee. Tara and Jay share their personal journeys—both of which began outside of agriculture—detailing their challenges, missteps, and the pivotal moments that shaped their businesses. From scaling their apiaries to diversifying their revenue streams, they offer practical advice for beekeepers looking to turn their passion into a sustainable business. One of the biggest lessons they emphasize is that beekeeping businesses don't have to rely solely on honey sales. Both guests discuss the role of agribusiness opportunities, including hive tours, honey tastings, VIP yard management, and B2B partnerships. They highlight the importance of branding, marketing, and pricing honey appropriately, noting that storytelling and quality presentation can dramatically increase a product's perceived value. Throughout the conversation, they reflect on the pitfalls of trying to do everything at once and why finding a niche is key. They explain how agritourism can supplement income, even in regions with inconsistent honey flows, and share insights on hiring employees in a beekeeping business. The discussion also covers state and federal grants that beekeepers can apply for to expand operations, and why pricing honey at premium rates is often more sustainable than undercutting the market. If you're thinking about expanding your beekeeping beyond the hobbyist level, this episode is packed with insights, strategies, and real-world advice from beekeepers who have successfully made the transition. Varroa mites remain a persistent challenge for beekeepers, and effective management is key to colony survival. In this episode, Jim Tew welcomes Anne Frey from Betterbee to discuss practical approaches to monitoring and controlling mites. Anne explains why beekeepers must check for mites every two to four weeks, even when early-season counts appear low. She and Jim explore detection methods, from sticky boards for beginners to more advanced sampling techniques, and emphasize how quickly mite populations can escalate if left unchecked. Treatment strategies depend on colony size and seasonal conditions. Anne discusses organic acids like Formic Pro and oxalic acid, synthetic options such as Apivar, and why DIY treatments are unreliable. They also explore non-chemical approaches, including drone brood removal, which Anne summarizes with the phrase, “When they're capped, the mites are trapped.” Timing is critical, and waiting until fall to treat can be too late. Managing mites throughout the season helps prevent virus transmission and ensures stronger winter colonies. Jim and Anne highlight the importance of consistent mite monitoring and encourage beekeepers to use reliable resources like the Honey Bee Health Coalition for science-based treatment guidance. Mite management is a year-round responsibility. Whether you're new to beekeeping or experienced, this conversation offers practical insights to keep your colonies healthy. In episode 108 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication, we chat with Connie Vogelmann about her design Apiary. What started as her journey as a playtester for Stonemaier Games, quickly dominoed into an invitation to a designer day where she showcased Apiary and ultimately led to it being signed. Connie shares the lessons she learned along the way, including the tools she used for prototyping and how tweaking the theme to "bees in space" helped refine the game's mechanics. Connie and Danielle discuss other topics including the advantages of working with large publishers with access to blind playtest audiences, the importance of filtering playtester feedback, the impact of online feedback (including the good, the bad, and the memes), and the lessons she's learned about rapid prototyping, efficiency, and keeping your sanity through the many iterations of game design. And if you were wondering, yes, she actually did do beekeeping for a bit! Featuring: Connie Vogelmann - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host
In the second episode of our February series, Upscaling from Hobbyist to Sideliner Beekeeper, Jeff and Becky continue the conversation with returning guests Dr. Meghan Milbrath and Ana Heck from Michigan State University. This week's focus is on one of the most critical—and often costly—aspects of growing a beekeeping operation: equipment and logistics. Meghan and Ana share their insights on how to strategically manage equipment as your apiary grows, covering everything from the pros and cons of building versus buying hive components to making decisions about palletizing, bottom boards, and the use of queen excluders. They discuss the importance of maintaining consistency with equipment sizes, the benefits of using migratory versus telescoping covers, and how to manage hive configurations for both honey production and overwintering. The conversation also dives into the practicalities of scaling up, such as selecting vehicles for beekeeping operations, deciding when (or if) a forklift makes sense, and managing outyards. Meghan and Ana offer valuable advice on finding and maintaining good relationships with landowners, how many colonies to place in a single yard, and even strategies for negotiating yard rent—often paid in honey! Whether you're considering your first expansion or already managing dozens of colonies, this episode offers practical tips, real-world experiences, and thoughtful advice to help you grow efficiently and sustainably. In this archive special episode of Honey Bee Obscura, Jim Tew is joined by Anne Frey from Betterbee to discuss the unpredictable and sometimes puzzling world of queen honey bees. While queens are typically diligent workers with a singular focus on laying eggs, anomalies can and do occur, leaving beekeepers scratching their heads. Jim and Anne share fascinating stories of queens fainting in the beekeeper's hand, queens with physical deformities that still manage to thrive, and the challenges of marking queens without mishap. They delve into the history and controversy of clipping queen wings, and the art of applying paint marks—a practice that can go hilariously wrong if not done with care. The episode highlights the importance of understanding that not all queens behave or perform as expected. Whether it's a queen that suddenly stops laying, exhibits unusual traits, or appears to defy logic, these experiences remind beekeepers that every hive tells its own story. Whether you're a seasoned beekeeper or just starting out, this episode offers valuable lessons and a reminder that sometimes the unexpected makes beekeeping all the more rewarding.
