Former Kerry football team manager Mick O'Dwyer has died at the age of forty- eight. Tá iarbhainisteoir fhoireann peile Chiarraí Mick O'Dwyer tar éis bháis in aois a ocht mbliana agus ceithre scór. 'Micko' was one of Ireland's greatest sporting figures and won many medals, championships, trophies and awards as a player and manager throughout his life. Duine de mhórphearsana spóirt na hÉireann ab ea 'Micko' agus is iomaí bonn, craobh, corn agus gradam nach iad a bhuaigh sé mar imreoir agus mar bhainisteoir i gcaitheamh a shaoil. He won four All-Ireland championships as a player and eight championships as a pioneering manager of that famous elite team that Kerry had in the seventies and eighties. Ceithre chraobh Uile- Éireann a bhuaigh sé mar imreoir agus ocht gcraobh mar bhainisteoir ceannródaíoch ar an scothfhoireann cháiliúil úd a bhí ag Ciarraí sna seachtóidí agus sna hochtóidí. The Kerry team at that time, led by the Waterford man, were often in footy duels with the great Dublin team led by Kevin Heffernan, games that are deeply engraved and carved in stone for the Gaelic Athletic Association. Ba mhinic na Ciarraígh an uair úd, faoi stiúir fhear an Choireáin, i ndeabhaidh chosbháire le sárfhoireann Bhaile Átha Cliath a raibh Kevin Heffernan ina ceannas, cluichí atá greanta go domhain agus go snoite i gcloch oiris Chumann Lúthchleas Gael. Not counting the All-Ireland Championship, Mick O'Dwyer won the Munster Championship 23 times and the National League eleven times as both a player and manager. Gan Craobh na hÉireann a bhac, bhuaigh Mick O'Dwyer Craobh na Mumhan 23 uair agus an tSraith Náisúnta aon uair déag mar imreoir agus mar bhainisteoir araon. Although he was a staunch Kerryman, his talent was sought after in other counties as well and he was lured by teams that were not performing well – namely, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Clare – in the hope that he would turn the malt into ale, even though he was a man who had always abstained from intoxicating drink. Cé gur Ciarraíoch dílis go smior a bhí ann, bhí tóir ar a ardchumas i gcontaetha eile leis agus mealladh é ag foirne nach raibh ag cruthú go maith – mar atá, Cill Dara, Laois, Cill Mhantáin agus an Clár – le súil go ndéanfadh sé leann den bhraich, siúd is go mb'fhear é a staon riamh ón deoch mheisciúil. In fact, Kildare won the Leinster Championship in 1998 and 2000 under the guidance of Mick O'Dwyer and that team reached the All-Ireland final in 1998, when they were beaten by Galway by four goals. Go deimhin, bhain Cill Dara Craobh Laighean i 1998 agus in 2000 faoi lámh stiúrtha Mick O'Dwyer agus chuaigh an fhoireann sin chomh fada le cluiche ceannais Chraobh na hÉireann i 1998, tráth a fuair Gaillimh an ceann is fearr orthu le ceithre chúilín. Mick O'Dwyer made his living as an innkeeper and undertaker in Waterville. Is mar óstóir agus adhlacóir sa Choireán a shaothraigh Mick O'Dwyer a bheatha. His first wife Mary Carmel died in 2012 and he married Geraldine Shields in 2023. Bhásaigh a chéad bhean chéile Mary Carmel in 2012 agus phós sé Geraldine Shields in 2023. He is survived by his sons John, Robbie and Karl. Maireann a chlann mhac John, Robbie agus Karl. He was predeceased by another son, Michael. Bhásaigh roimhe mac eile, Michael. The rapid-fire National League campaign is now over with the action getting underway in this year's Championship next weekend. Mayo take the field next Saturday, when they face Sligo in a Connacht SFC quarter-final tie at Markievicz Park.In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we use the short lull in hostilities between League and Championship to preview this year's race for the Sam Maguire. Billy Joe Padden hosts the Championship preview episode and he's joined by fellow Mayo News (and Irish Examiner) columnist Colin Sheridan and by Mick Foley of the Sunday Times. In a wide-ranging discussion, the lads look ahead to the summer campaign from a number of different angles. Their focus initially is on Mayo, where, naturally, they zero in straight away on the loss that Cillian O'Connor represents to a Mayo team that start out as favourites to retain the Nestor Cup but whose more expansive plans this year have been undercut by the Achilles injury suffered by their talisman. The lens then widens out to consider Galway and Roscommon, both of whom were relegated from Division One last weekend and who seem destined to meet in Connacht at the semi-final stage. Their respective strengths and weaknesses are examined, as are their prospects for provincial honours. Casting the net wider still, the lads survey other potential last-four competitors, before their gaze fixes on the quixotic endeavours of John Maughan and Mickey Harte. Both men have walked the line more than once on All-Ireland day but this year their respective charges in Offaly and Louth - both of whom enjoyed League promotion this year - are set to meet in the first round of the Leinster Championship.Wrapping up this Championship preview episode, all three provide their predictions on who'll come out of Connacht and then they go on to declare who they think will get their hands on Sam in August. This episode of the Mayo News football podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Podomatic and Spotify. The pair take a look at the Leinster football and hurling championship draws which were made early on Tuesday morning.  The Laois footballers have been drawn to play Westmeath in this year’s Leinster championship. It will be the third time in four years for the counties to meet at the quarter-final stage with Laois winning the 2018 and 2019 clashes. The semi-final draw will only be held after the quarter-finals in the summer. The football championship will again be straight knockout this year with no qualifiers for the teams beaten in their provinces. While in hurling, Laois will play Wexford in this year’s Leinster championship quarter-final. Should Laois win, they will meet Kilkennyin the semi-final. The winners of Dublin-Antrim will meet Galway in the semi-final. This week's interview features Laois's longest serving and leading appearance holder for the hurlers - Matthew Whelan.  The Borris-Kilcotton man speaks about his decision to commit for a 15th year, the return of Cheddar, hopes for the season and ideal club structure.

The faith Liam Sheedy showed in his Tipp players was repaid in buckets with their impressive seven point win over Cork on Sunday and Brendan Cummins joined Will Slattery, Michael Verney and Donnchadh Boyle on this week’s Throw-In podcast to discuss their chances for the 2019 Championship. “The intensity is what impressed most,” said Cummins. “We spoke about how fast Cork were but it’s very hard to show your speed when you don’t have the ball. Tipp knew if they brought the aggression they’d have enough to beat Cork. We’ll find out more about them now against Waterford.” What now for Cork, whom many tipped for an All-Ireland, especially the panel on the Throw-In?
