Shannon Airport increased its passenger count by over 153,000 last year. For the first time in fifteen years, passenger numbers at the Clare base surpassed 2 million, and it's hoped the relaunch of an express bus service connecting the Airport to Galway could boost footfall again. Shannon boosted both its arrival and departure numbers in 2024. According to the Central Statistics Office's latest Aviation report, both the amount of flyers taking off and touching down in Clare increased by 8%. England was the most popular destination for flyers out of Shannon, accounting for over 391,000 passengers, this was followed by the 168,000 who flew to the United States and the 123,000 going to Spain. In terms of inbound traffic , 400,000 passengers flew into Shannon from the UK, 167,000 touched down from the United States and just below 123,000 came from Spain. In total, Shannon handled just over 2,050,800 passengers last year, 153,000 more than the previous year and the highest on record since 2009. From April 29th, Bus Eireann's expressway service connecting Galway City to Shannon Airport will return. It will four direct routes each way, with the aim of lining up to key transatlantic flight times. Shannon Airport Group Chief Operating Officer Ray O'Driscoll is hopeful they will see very positive results. There was a slight drop in the freight and commercial traffic handled at Shannon last year, however. Shannon dealt with over 16 tonnes of freight traffic over the past twelve months, with the majority of goods coming and going to Germany. There were also just over 14,800 commercial flights facilitated at Shannon, down from 15,000 the year before, with the UK and the United States again the most popular destinations.

Liberty IT and Galway City Museum have announced the launch of a new educational partnership pilot to support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning for young people with the creation of a new digital skills initiative. The industry leader in digital innovation and the centre of learning and inspiration are set to develop a new immersive technology experience for Junior Cycle students as part of the museum's education offering. Liberty IT and Galway City Museum new educational partnership Laura Mackin, Director of Communications & Marketing from Liberty IT said, "We are delighted to partner with Galway City Museum to pilot a brand-new technology-focused workshop to empower and excite local school children, help develop their IT skills and inspire the future talent of our industry." "At Liberty IT, we foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and problem-solving and are deeply invested in making a positive impact on the Galway community," continued Mackin, "We are committed to supporting education and as part of this we are thrilled to announce the creation of a new and exciting collaborative workspace at Galway City Museum, designed to connect technology with the museum experience." "This partnership follows the hugely successful STEAM Studio which we created and launched in the Ulster Museum in Belfast earlier this year and to date, over 1,000 school children have had the opportunity to avail of this unique workshop. STEAM Studio is Liberty IT's largest invested programme across the island of Ireland and it is our hope that this new partnership will play a key role in the provision of tech learning for pupils across the West of Ireland, address the current lack of provision in this skillset and ultimately inspire young people to consider a career in the industry. We look forward to working with the team at Galway City Museum in the months ahead to develop a STEAM Studio pilot that is inspired by the museum's collection, is bespoke to the local community and helps develop and upskill students," said Mackin. The Mayor of Galway, Peter Keane, who welcomed the project said, "Galway City Council and Galway City Museum are delighted to partner with Liberty IT to launch the STEAM Studio in Galway. This initiative offers local students a unique opportunity to develop essential IT skills while exploring our rich heritage and history through the museum's exhibitions and collections." Eithne Verling, Director of the Galway City Museum said, "Galway City Museum welcomes this innovative and important project. The partnership with Liberty IT reinforces the museum's commitment to educational engagement and connecting the community with its cultural resources." Vodafone Ireland, in collaboration with Folk VML, is proud to unveil a powerful new out-of-home (OOH) campaign addressing the escalating issue of e-waste in Ireland. As part of Vodafone's ongoing 'Home of Trade-In' initiative, this campaign uses the stunning backdrop of Glendalough to highlight the magnitude of e-waste through a dramatic depiction of a literal mountain of unused smartphones. With more than 5 million unused smartphones languishing in drawers across Ireland, the valuable raw materials they contain are being overlooked and wasted. This issue remains largely hidden and forgotten, as these devices sit idle and unused. Vodafone offers a range of solutions to tackle this growing problem, including refurbished smartphones, Trade-In programs, device repair, and recycling services. These initiatives give unused phones a new lease on life, ensuring they are repaired, recycled, or repurposed. Speaking about the campaign Amanda Nelson, CEO at Vodafone Ireland, said: ''This campaign was designed to grab attention and spark conversations around e-waste and the role we can all play in tackling this problem. Through initiatives like Trade-in, fix and go, recycling and our refurbished phones, we are committed to addressing this problem by extending the lifecycle of our customers devices, offering them better, more sustainable value that's kinder to the planet." Jonny Cullen, Creative Director at Folk VML added: ''There are over 5 million unused smartphones across the breadth of Ireland. Calling out that alarming stat is one thing but bringing that stat to life for the consumer in a dramatic visual is way more powerful. Our job was to inform the public that you can do something about it by trading in, repairing, recycling and repurposing these smartphones thanks to Vodafone.'' The adverts will appear on billboards at Summerhill North Road in Cork City, Dorset Street in Dublin and Wellpark Road in Galway City from Monday 26th August to September 8th. See more stories here.
