Research shows that by the time a girl reaches age 11, she has built the belief system that you earn love by pleasing others. But as we know, a life built around that sentiment, is destined for poor mental health when your internal reward system is - put others happiness before your own, to please and ‘be a good girl’ in the eyes of the community around us. Dr. Michelle McQuaid spent years of her adult life ticking the boxes of what we are told will provide us fulfilment and happiness - a great career, good financial income, getting married and having children and once those boxes were ticked, life will set and fulfilling. But what happens when you tick those boxes, yet you find yourself ignoring your inner voice in the sacrifice to achieve them and side-line your mental well-being to keep it on track? Dr. McQuaid found herself exhausted, burnt out and deeply unhappy and it came to a point after her midlife, where it was time to stop and look at how did she get here, and why was she so conditioned to ignore her sense of self to achieve the ideals of others. So we sit down with Dr. McQuaid, an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Wellbeing Science at Melbourne University, blogs for Psychology Today, and has been featured in Forbes, the Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal and more to unpack what she has learned through research around the grooming of good girls and it’s impact as the good girl grows into a women. "What just happened? Was this a coincidence or a sign from somewhere?" What happens to us, when experiencing something that prompt such questions in us? How do we process so-called mystical or uncanny experiences, which logic can't help navigating? And if organizations thrive on navigating challenges and dilemmas through logic and facts, could suspending fact-based thinking result into effective leadership? Dr Noel McQuaid fascinated by these aspects of life, researched how senior leaders navigate experiences that their logic couldn't explain. He found that suspending logical thinking and not dismissing too early such experiences could actually result into effective and courageous decision-making, which otherwise wouldn't be possible or at as accessible. He shares his fascinating insights and ideas on a topic that we may rarely think of or make space for. Dr. Michelle McQuaid joins me in this episode to dive deep into the concept of "good girl conditioning" and how it impacts women's mental health and well-being. We explore the societal expectations that shape our beliefs from a young age, often leading to exhaustion and a sense of emptiness, despite achieving external markers of success. Dr. McQuaid shares her personal journey of discovering these patterns and the research that highlights how they manifest in our lives, particularly for women. Together, we discuss practical strategies for breaking free from these constraints. This conversation is not just enlightening; it's a call to action for all of us to step into our authentic selves and support each other in that journey.Connect with Chelle:www.goodgirlgamechangers.comwww.michellemcquaid.comConnect with Cass:Email: hello@crappytohappypod.comwww.crappytohappypod.comwww.cassdunn.comJoin our community and subscribe to Beyond Happy:https://cassdunn.substack.com2025 Cassandra Dunn
On 1st January 1932, in the attic room of 27 Old Compton Street in Soho, 19-year-old domestic servant Edith McQuaid gave birth to a baby boy. Whether he died of natural causes, or she took his life by infanticide will never be known. But she wasn't alone. Edith was one of 1000s of women who concealed the pregnancy, the body of the dead babies or murdered them at birth across the United Kingdom, and yet, it wasn't there fault, as this national scandal had been raging for centuries.Date: 1st of January 1932 (birth and death of her baby)Location: attic, 27 Old Compton Street, Soho, London, UK, W1Victim: 1 (name unknown)Culprits: 1 (Edith McQuaid)Method: infanticide / neonaticideMurder Mile is one of the best UK / British / English true crime podcasts covering only 20 square miles of West London. Did you know that before 1992, no one in the league had worn #54 in a game — Jim Vesey, father of Jimmy, did it first and 73 others have followed in 32 years since! We figure the most notable is a good east boy, pride of Charlottetown — Darth Quaider himself, Mr. Adam McQuaid! He was a good stay at home d‑man for Boston, the New York Rangers and Columbus amassing 512 games and winning a cup with the B's in 2010-11. Then we dissect what's going on in Vancouver as the Canucks seem in some serious disarray — Co-Host Tom puts on GM Patrik Alvin's pants and figured out whose gotta go — J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson. Finally, we talk fun stat lines — goals being scored without shots, goalies getting ginos AND apples, and will Eric Comrie ever get some help?

Send us a Text Message. This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Carol McQuaid, artist, writer, blogger, world traveler and creator of The Illustrated Vagabond. I am so excited to bring Carol to the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast--the first seafaring artist in over 200 guests featured in The Joy of Cruising books, and The Joy of Cruising Podcast. (In just a few weeks we will follow up with The Joy of Cruising Podcast's first interview of a maritime artist--Cruise Cotterill, who has drawn and displayed onboard over 100 cruise ships.) My interview with Carol McQuaid, aka The Illustrated Vagabond, a seafaring artist who travels the world sketching, painting, and teaching art workshops, was loads of fun and informative. From www.theillustratedvagabond.com: I love to travel, teach and make art. I've been showing in galleries and teaching watercolour painting and printmaking around the globe for a few decades. I'm based in Canada but spend more time on the road than not. I get invited on cruise ships to teach watercolour and printmaking, which gives me a great opportunity to travel the globe. I also do workshops and artist-in-residence experiences. I love to draw, especially on location. It used to be in little sketchbooks, some of which I'd make by hand. Now it's mostly on my iPad, using Procreate. It's never about what ends up on the paper or posted on social media. It's about the act of really observing. It's a meditation. I love that. The drawings on here are all done by hand with an Apple Pencil, not an app. The writing is also done by an actual human, me. I understand there's a use for AI, but I hope it doesn't replace real human creative effort. That would make me sad. Carol just completed the World Voyage on the Azamara Onward as its onboard art instructor. Apart from her love of cruising, and teaching art to passengers, Carol kept a sketchbook of the entire World Voyage and created a gorgeous fully illustrated book that is about to hit the bookshelves. It's full of all the top port stops, some good planning info, and lots of fun sketches and stories of life onboard. Read the full show notes: https://www.draimee.org/london-is-the-reason-with-kristin-mcquaid Today, I'm so honored to have Kristin McQuaid joining me to talk about a very touching and powerful topic: support for surrogate mothers and intended parents through infant loss. Kristin and her husband, Steve, started a non-profit organization in honor of their daughter, London Quinn, who was born still at 39 weeks in July, 2021. They named the organization "London is the Reason," and the non-profit focuses on supporting surrogates and their intended parents through infant loss. I feel quite privileged to have Kristin share her story, and the story of her daughter London with us. I know you will be moved by what she shares. We will be talking about her diagnosis of stage four endometriosis, how she learned about surrogacy, and how she, her husband and their gestational carrier navigated through the loss of London last year. She will also share additional resources for anyone experiencing loss as a surrogate and intended parent. And, you can learn more about “London is the Reason,” and how to get involved. You may know Kristin McQuaid is a choreographer, dancer, designer, creative director, director, and producer. Her work has gone viral on "You Think You Can Dance," and "Dance Moms." Whatever struggles I had or whatever was happening, I was always going to try to be my best self." - Tiffany McQuaid(00:07:40) "But going forward, that's going to be where your value is. A buyer is going to want to work with you because you have knowledge that nobody else does." - Tiffany McQuaid(00:19:31) "But for this book, very proud of the things that I'm sharing those vulnerabilities, and hoping that the conversion will be whoever's listening to it via audio or reading about it, they're going to walk away with just a little bit of hope, that's all." - Tiffany McQuaid(00:23:05) "I've chosen not to incorporate it into my life, but instead realize that I don't ever want intentionally to have anyone feel the kind of pain I have felt. So with that said, I just want to bring joy. That's it." - Tiffany McQuaid(00:31:09) "And that's when it's very easy, then, to flip the switch back and say, I'm going to focus on those five amazing shiny pennies again, because that's representing, essentially the 80%. The day after Donald Trump testified in his own defense in a New York courtroom, Bill talks to MSNBC and NBC News legal analyst Barbara McQuade. McQuade is a former US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan and a professor at the University of Michigan law school. She is one of four great lawyers on very popular podcast, Sisters-in-Law. Barb and Bill covered a lot of ground. Former President Donald Trump testifying in his own defense in a courtroom is an unprecedented event. He attacked the judge, prosecutors, and the justice system during his testimony. Trump is facing 91 criminal counts in a string of cases, and it is challenging to keep track of all his legal challenges. McQuade believes that Trump's strategy is to protect his reputation in the court of public opinion rather than help himself legally. McQuade also discusses the possibility of Trump being found guilty in various cases and the potential consequences, including fines and the cancellation of business certificates. She also discusses the likelihood of Trump appealing a guilty verdict and the legal arguments he may use. Finally, McQuaid touches on cases challenging Trump's eligibility as a presidential candidate based on the 14th Amendment.Barbara McQuade has a new book coming out next year, Attack from Within: How Disinformation Is Sabotaging America.
