November Roundtable: The Holiday Overwhelm Episode with Paige Connell & Allie McQuaidThe holidays are supposed to feel warm and joyful- but for most moms, they also come with nonstop logistics, emotional labor, and a running mental checklist that never really turns off. And for millennial moms especially, the expectations feel higher than ever.In this month's roundtable, Erin Holland (PG-ish Podcast) and I are joined by Paige Connell (@sheisapageturner) and Allie McQuaid (@millennialmomtherapist) for a conversation that goes right into the thick of it: the mental load, the pressure to make things magical, the generational friction that shows up the minute you walk into a family gathering, and the complicated mix of joy and burnout that this season brings. In this episode we cover:Why the holidays hit so hard when your plate was already full in JulyThe “fun mom” pressure and why it doesn't make sense, when you're the one noticing, planning, packing, and rememberingHow early messaging around anger and emotions shows up again in motherhoodThe emotional gymnastics of blended families, divorced parenting, and juggling multiple householdsWhy social media intensifies holiday expectations (and how to spot what's actual life vs. content creation)What our kids really remember and why it's almost never the expensive or elaborate stuffHow to rethink traditions, drop the “shoulds,” and pay attention to what actually brings joy or easeThe permission to let this year look different than last year (or any year)It's honest, relatable, a little funny, and full of the kind of “oh right, it's not just me” moments that make the holidays feel a little more doable.Listen in, especially if the season feels like a lot before it's even started.Connect with Paige and Allie:Paige Connell — @sheisapageturnerAllie McQuaid — @millennialmomtherapistConnect with Ashley:Website: https://www.ashleyblackington.comPodcast website: https://www.andbothpodcast.com/Dovetail® App: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dovetail-app/id6744341822Instagram: @mydovetail.appLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashleyblackington/

Research shows that by the time a girl reaches age 11, she has built the belief system that you earn love by pleasing others. But as we know, a life built around that sentiment, is destined for poor mental health when your internal reward system is - put others happiness before your own, to please and ‘be a good girl’ in the eyes of the community around us. Dr. Michelle McQuaid spent years of her adult life ticking the boxes of what we are told will provide us fulfilment and happiness - a great career, good financial income, getting married and having children and once those boxes were ticked, life will set and fulfilling. But what happens when you tick those boxes, yet you find yourself ignoring your inner voice in the sacrifice to achieve them and side-line your mental well-being to keep it on track? Dr. McQuaid found herself exhausted, burnt out and deeply unhappy and it came to a point after her midlife, where it was time to stop and look at how did she get here, and why was she so conditioned to ignore her sense of self to achieve the ideals of others. So we sit down with Dr. McQuaid, an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Wellbeing Science at Melbourne University, blogs for Psychology Today, and has been featured in Forbes, the Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal and more to unpack what she has learned through research around the grooming of good girls and it’s impact as the good girl grows into a women. Dr. Michelle McQuaid joins me in this episode to dive deep into the concept of "good girl conditioning" and how it impacts women's mental health and well-being. We explore the societal expectations that shape our beliefs from a young age, often leading to exhaustion and a sense of emptiness, despite achieving external markers of success. Dr. McQuaid shares her personal journey of discovering these patterns and the research that highlights how they manifest in our lives, particularly for women. Together, we discuss practical strategies for breaking free from these constraints. Whether he died of natural causes, or she took his life by infanticide will never be known. But she wasn't alone. Did you know that before 1992, no one in the league had worn #54 in a game — Jim Vesey, father of Jimmy, did it first and 73 others have followed in 32 years since! We figure the most notable is a good east boy, pride of Charlottetown — Darth Quaider himself, Mr. Adam McQuaid! He was a good stay at home d‑man for Boston, the New York Rangers and Columbus amassing 512 games and winning a cup with the B's in 2010-11. Then we dissect what's going on in Vancouver as the Canucks seem in some serious disarray — Co-Host Tom puts on GM Patrik Alvin's pants and figured out whose gotta go — J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson. Finally, we talk fun stat lines — goals being scored without shots, goalies getting ginos AND apples, and will Eric Comrie ever get some help?

In episode 381 of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into insightful discussions and a bit of fun with furry friends. Kicking things off, they explore Dr. Michelle McQuaid's article, “Avoid This Common Boundary Setting Mistake,” from Psychology Today. Together, they unpack the complexities of setting boundaries, discussing McQuaid's advice on common pitfalls and adding their own perspectives on how boundaries play out in everyday life. Next, they delve into the humor and travel adventures of Conan Without Borders and Conan O'Brien Must Go, both available on Max. Sharing favorite moments and laughs from Conan's global escapades, they also touch on some criticisms, giving a balanced look at what makes Conan's style of travel unique. Finally, Tim the Nerd introduces the newest addition to the Friends Talking Nerdy community: the Instagram account @ftnpets! Dedicated to show mascots Annie and Mimsy, the account brings followers closer to the hosts' beloved feline companions. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
