Hello, Catholic Pilgrims. There is so much going on today in our readings and they are longer, so I don't want to take too much time upfront. Though we have a longer reading today, you are going to get a detailed snapshot into life in Nicaragua for Italian missionaries in 1891. It really is like going back in time and I find it fascinating. Here we are, over a hundred years later, reading about her time on November 3rd, 1891. Could she have imagined such a thing? Since this is the end of a voyage, I'll give my reflections after the reading. Let's go ahead and turn to page 76.
George Mpanga, known as George the Poet, is seen by many as one of the UK's most compelling voices in poetry, music, and social commentary. Originally hailing from St Raphael's Estate in Neasden, Mpanga has spent over a decade working at the intersection of art and politics reflecting on his upbringing to shed light on how race and inequality still shape Britain today. His debut poetry collection in 2015, Search Party, tackled the north-south divide, the housing crisis and critiqued government anti-immigration policies, to widespread acclaim. Since then, Mpanga's work has bridged grime, prose, spoken-word performance, and most recently longer-form audio, as he has continued to interrogate the socio-political status quo. In February 2025 he joined us on stage to discuss the themes of his new memoir, Track Record: Me, Music, and the War on Blackness. He discussed his personal story alongside a broader social history of race and identity in Britain, and examined what he terms “the war on Blackness”: the systemic forces that continue to oppress people of African descent worldwide. ----- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. He was born in Syria in 1860, in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. In his childhood, his family took refuge in Lebanon after their parish priest, St Joseph of Damascus (July 10) was martyred; but they later returned to Damascus. In 1879 he was tonsured a monk and entered into the service of Patriarch Hierotheos of Antioch. The Balamand Seminary had been closed since 1840, but the young monk was offered a scholarship at the Constantinople Patriarchate's seminary at Halki. Returning to Syria with a theological degree, St Raphael became assistant to Gerasimos, the new Patriarch of Antioch, traveling and preaching on his behalf. After further studies in Kiev, he transferred to the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow and for a time was professer of Arabic studies at the Theological Academy in Kazan. (At that time the downtrodden Orthodox of the Middle East received considerable aid and theological training from the Tsar and from the Church in Russia). In 1895 he was sent to the United States to shepherd the Arab Orthodox Community in New York, which was without a church or a priest. He quickly consecrated a chapel and with great energy set about the work of shepherding his flock there; but he was concerned not only for them but for the Arab Christian immigrants scattered through North America, most of whom were without a pastor and in danger of falling into heterodoxy or abandoning religious life. He traveled widely throughout the continent, visiting, counseling and serving Arab Christians, preaching, celebrating marriages and baptisms, receiving confessions and celebrating the Divine Liturgy, usually in private houses. In 1898 he published the first Orthodox prayer book in Arabic to appear in the New World. In 1899, he made a seven-month journey through forty-three American cities, seeking out the "scattered sheep" of the Church in America. His services were attended not only by Arabs but by Russians and Greeks, all of whom at that time depended on the Russian mission to North America. During this entire period, he held the official rank of Archimandrite, though his work and duties exceeded those of most bishops. In 1901, Patriarch Meletios was elected to the see of Antioch, the first Arab to occupy the patriarchal throne for 168 years. Several proposals were made to elect Archimandrite Raphael to a see in Syria; but he refused all such offers, pointing out the Orthodox people's great and little-met needs in North America. In 1904, the Moscow Patriarchate made him Bishop of Brooklyn, the first Orthodox bishop to be consecrated on American soil. He redoubled his already impressive pastoral work, ordaining priests to the many new parishes that he had founded, and assisting Saint Tikhon (then Bishop of North America) in the care of his huge diocese. In 1905 he laid the foundation of the Monastery of St Tikhon in Pennsylvania. The bishop saw the importance of integrating the faithful into the life of their new homeland, and was an early advocate of the use of English in American Church services. When Isabel Hapgood's Service Book — the first useful English translation of the Church's services — was published in 1906, he advocated its use in all his parishes. In 1912, St Raphael was found to be suffering from heart disease, but continued his exhausting pastoral work for two more years. In 1915 he was finally unable to continue, and reposed after two months' illness. When his relics were transported in 1998 from Brooklyn to Antiochian Village in Ligonier, PA, they were found to be incorrupt, and in 2000 he became the most recently glorified Saint of North America. In North America St Raphael is commemorated on the anniversary of his repose: February 27 on the Civil/New Calendar, February 14 on the Julian Calendar. He is also commemorated with the Synaxis of Saints of North America on the Second Sunday after Pentecost. The Patriarchate of Antioch also commemorates him, but on Saturday before the Synaxis of the Archangels (November 8).

The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition. - - - - - - What is the SSPX? The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.
1 After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.Post haec erat dies festus Judaeorum, et ascendit Jesus Jerosolymam. 2 Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.Est autem Jerosolymis probatica piscina, quae cognominatur hebraice Bethsaida, quinque porticus habens. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. In his jacebat multitudo magna languentium, caecorum, claudorum, aridorum, exspectantium aquae motum. 4 And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.Angelus autem Domini descendebat secundum tempus in piscinam, et movebatur aqua. Et qui prior descendisset in piscinam post motionem aquae, sanus fiebat a quacumque detinebatur infirmitate. Benedict the XV extended to the Universal Church the Feast of the holy Archangel St Rahael, who is known to us from the inspired words from the book of Tobias as the angelical physician of soul and body.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, September 29, is the feast of the Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. This feast, superseded by the Sunday Liturgy, is called "Michaelmas" in many countries. The three Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, are the only angels named in Sacred Scripture, and all three have important roles in the history of salvation. Michael (Who is like God?) was the archangel who fought against Satan and all his evil angels, defending all the friends of God. He is the protector of all humanity from the snares of the devil. Gabriel (Strength of God) announced to Zachariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary, the birth of Jesus. His greeting to the Virgin, "Hail, full of grace," is one of the most frequent prayers. Raphael (Medicine of God) was the archangel who cared for Tobias on his journey. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith. The faithful join with the angels to adore the Trinitarian God. Angels are pure, created spirits, heavenly beings of a higher order than humans. The name angel means servant or messenger of God. Angels have intellect and will and are immortal. They have no bodies. They are distinct from saints, which men can become. They are a vast multitude, but each is a person. Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible. In ascending order, the choirs or classes are 1) Angels, 2) Archangels, 3) Principalities, 4) Powers, 5) Virtues, 6) Dominations, 7) Thrones, 8) Cherubim, and 9) Seraphim.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New York • September 29, 2024, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

George the Poet knows better than anybody the importance of understanding your surroundings. Born to Ugandan parents on the St Raphael's Estate in Neasden, north-west London, George Mpanga has always been aware of his community. It was both his teacher and his inspiration – giving him the language, the experiences, and the skills to become the person he is today. In this episode George joins former Guardian columnist Professor Gary Younge to unveil the power dynamics that shape our world, shedding light on the forces that restrict Black creativity and put limits on Black excellence. He shares his personal path from liberalism to radicalism, and what fatherhood and Tupac have taught him along the way. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

St. Raphael's produced a stunning 1-20 to 3-13 success over Nenagh CBS in the semi-final two weeks ago. St. Kieran's beat their predecessors Ardscoil Rís 1-19 to 0-14. Francis Forde is the St. Raphael's joint manager along with Ronan Hardiman.

After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.Post haec erat dies festus Judaeorum, et ascendit Jesus Jerosolymam. Benedict XV extended the the Universal Church the Feast of the holy Archangel St Raphael, who is known to us from the inspired words of the Book of Tobias as the angelical physician of soul and body.

St. Raphael, patron of happy meetings and healing, is one of three archangels we venerate and celebrate by name (along with St. Michael and St. Gabriel). Who/what are angels and what role do they play in the Bible? Did you know Flannery O'Connor prayed to St. Raphael everyday, or that St. Francis celebrated 'St. Michael's Lent' when he received the stigmata? We'll learn the story of the Book of Tobit - an adventurous, beautiful story where we meet St. Raphael in disguise, and we'll end the episode with some beautiful Orthodox chant. ---- www.bornofwonder.com Leave a review for the podcast on iTunes and leave a star rating on Spotify! May all our movements be guided by your Light and transfigured with your joy. Angel, guide of Tobias, lay the request we now address to you at the feet of Him on whose unveiled Face you are privileged to gaze. Lonely and tired, crushed by the separations and sorrows of life, we feel the need of calling you and of pleading for the protection of your wings, so that we may not be as strangers in the province of joy, all ignorant of the concerns of our country. Remember the weak, you who are strong, you whose home lies beyond the region of thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene and bright with the resplendent glory of God. The Faith Explained with Cale Clarke - Learning the Catholic Faith
Where does St. Raphael the Archangel appear in the Bible? Where does the word “archangel” come from? What are the nine choirs of angels? Cale looks at the Book of Tobit and what the marriage between Tobias and Sarah means for you today.
Our monthly series on the Saints and Mental health continues as Deacon Eric Gurash reflects on Archangel, St. Raphael, and his role not just as a healer of physical ailments, but as a powerful intercessor and companion in times of serious grief and emotional distress. Show Snippet: "The story of Tobit and his family reminds us that these answered prayers often come in surprising, disguised ways. A coworker or friend, a bit of scripture or song heard at a time of great need, or, as with Raphael, a lonely traveler, a stranger...all may be secret encounters with the divine reaching out to give answer to the deep need of our hearts."
